The NFL opens, college still surprises

Catch Lance with John Granato 6-10 amCST on 1560 The Game. Listen to John withSean the Cablinasian Pendergast from 3-7PM in the afternoon. www.1560thegame.com

Last year at this time, the New Orleans

Saints had only twoplayoff wins in their

    history.

365 days later, the Saints are

getting ready to open up at

    home as the new

    darl ings of the

    NFL as

    defending World

    C h a m p i o n s .

    Minnesota

    returns to

    the scene of

    the c r i me , i f you will, after

losing to New Orleans in the

    NFC Championship game.

No better way for the NFL

season to open up than down in

    New Orleans with the Saints

    v. Vikings. But, the greatpart of the NFL weekend is

a full weekend of games. A

    Thursday night game. All

    day Sunday games and then

    two on Monday night.

    The college slate doesnt let

up one bit either after one of

    the most interesting opening

    weekends in recent memory.

Boise State doesnt play this weekend, preparing for

    Wyoming next week, but the

    Broncos had the most

    impressive win of the weekend.

But, perhaps the two teams with

the most to prove, Ole Miss and

Kansas, get on the field to

hopefully find retribution...anda win. Georgia Tech wont make

it easy on Kansas, but Tulane

    wont push Ole Miss much.

When the Texans have the ball...The Texans pass protection has been very solid over the last twoyears, but anytime you are seeingDwight Freeneyand Robert Mathis, you have to be on alert to get ridof the ball quickly. The Texans have been able to run the ball against the Colts and they have been able toget the Colts defensive ends to bite on play-actionwhich has helped to slow the pass rush down. Onceagain, the key to the Texans success will be runningthe ball and making the Colts respect the run. TheColts defense doesnt match up all that well against

the Texans passing attack, but is it wise to get into abattle of total yardage against the Colts? Time ofpossession is much more important than total yardsfor the Texans.

When the Colts have the ball...If there is onearea where Peyton Manning might be the most gifted it is recognizing matchup deficiencies andexploiting them. Manning will obviously go into a game knowing which matchups favor the Colts, but hecan also put defenses in bad situations when they try and disguise their weaknesses. Manning willdefinitely look to exploit strong safety Bernard Pollard in coverage and he will go after rookiecornerback Kareem Jackson who hasnt seen anything like the Colts passing attack. The Texans are

hoping to just survive without giving up quick-strike scores since they know they can at least hold the Coltsrunning game in check. Dallas Clarkcould end up with double digitcatches in this one.

Prediction:There is no reason to believe that either offense wont beable to move the ball against the other teams defense. The key in thisgame could once again be the Colts continued success in the redzone

versus the Texans inconsistencies once they get inside the redzone. Nobody beats the Colts with FGs.

    Last Meeting: Indianapolis - 35 vs. Houston - 27 (11/29/2009)

Fantasy ScoopUnload with all of your primary weapons fromthe Colts as they should give the Texansinexperienced secondary all they can handle. I would also start both running backs, JosephAddai and Arian Foster. I might considerbenchingOwen Daniels for this game if youhave a good backup TE just in case Daniels isrusty.

When the Falcons have the ball...The Falcons offense can beat you with the run or the pass, butthey tend to function a little inconsistently. For one, the offensive line has issues at times and the Steelersmultiple blitz packages will cause problems for the Falcons if they find themselves in bad down anddistance situations too often. To beat the Steelers defense, the Falcons must put them on their heels whichmeans the Falcons will have to work backward meaning pass earlier in downs to loosen up the defense. The Steelers typically do well against bulkier power backs like Michael Turner so the Falcons will have tohave a big game from Roddy White against theSteelers secondary.

When the Steelers have the ball...WithoutBen Roethlisberger, the Steelers are going to haveto have more confidence in their running game. TheSteelers averaged 4.7 ypc on their inside zone runslast year and yet didnt run it nearly enough. TheFalcons will be better this year with Peria Jerryback from injury and Dunta Robinson as the newstarting cornerback, but the Steelers still have theability to be a balanced offense even without BigBen. Now that Santonio Holmes is gone, defensescan probably keep a safety in the box to help against the run since Mike Wallace is the single deep threat

on the field. Dennis Dixonis good enough to win this game if the Steelers are balanced on offense.

Prediction:The Steelers defense is much healthier headed into thisseason than they were for most of last season so I expect to see the oldSteelers defense smashing the Falcons running game and unleashinghell on Matt Ryan on passing situations. The offense will be goodenough in this one.

    Last Meeting: Atlanta - 41 vs. Pittsburgh - 38 (10/22/2006)

Fantasy ScoopMike Wallace is going to be taking on thesame role Santonio Holmes had in the past solook for Wallace and Rashard Mendenhallto have solid games here while MichaelTurner will have to rely on a touchdown if hehopes to get close to double digit scoring.Roddy White should be a solid start in thisspot.

The Good: Peyton Manning and Tom Brady

have both proven in the past that they can beatopposing defenses with any of the weapons theyhave at their disposal andno w Drew Brees ha sproven that he belongs inthe same class. Breeshas a wealthy of play-making targets that hecan utilize throughout the game includingJeremyShockey, DevereyHenderson, Marques

    C o l s t o n , R o b e r tMeachem and ReggieBush.The Vikings defense is tough, but how dothey choose who to focus their attention on?

The Bad: Brett Favre hasnt had many snaps

this preseason and the ones hes taken haventlooked very good. Its one thing to panic over a

meaningless preseason tilt, but worrying about anaging QBs timing and armstrength after he missed asmuch camp as he has didseems perfectly legitimateto me. The passing gameis likely to get off to aslow start with Favrebeing rusty and with

Sidney Rice out. Add tothe fact that Favre isnt

100% healthy, the inability to step into his throwscould result in a couple of mistakes

    MINNESOTA VS. NEW ORLEANS

The Good: These two teams feature one of thebest pass rushers in the game in DeMarcus Wareand one of the best up-and-coming pass rushersin Brian Orakpo. Oneof the best things aboutthe renaissance of the 3-4defense is that it hasallowed the supposedtweeners to shine at a

pos i t ion (OLB) thatallows them to showcasetheir explosiveness andathleticism. Ware had anoff year by his standards, but is set to give rookieleft tackle Trent Williams a lesson he wont soonforget.

The Bad: Not only was the WashingtonRedskins offense one of the most impotent in the

league last year, but theirkickoff and punt returnstatistics were in thelower third of the leagueas well . The offe nseshould improve withMike Shanahan andKyle Shanahan running

the show, but one of thefastest ways for bad teamsto turn into average or

even good teams is todominate on specials teams. The Redskins arentthere yet.

The Money Matchup: The Vikingsare known for being run-stuffers up the middlethanks in large part to Kevin and Pa t

Williams, but they are facing their equal inSaints guards Jhari Evans and Carl Nicks. This battle of the beasts will go a long way indeciding which head coach is smiling at theend of the game.

The Money Matchup: There will be aterrific game within the game going on whenthe Redskins run their two tight end sets. Both Fred Davis and Chris Cooley arestrong in the passing game so the Cowboys willhave to decide if they want to sit in zone

coverage or play man and risk putting alinebacker on one of the TEs.

    1. Michael Turner, RB, Atlanta- He's notvery elusive and that is a bad thing against a Steelerdefense ready to tee off on Turner and the runninggame. 2. Shonn Greene, RB, NY Jets - Greene isn'tmuch of an option through the air so he isn't a

great play considering he is going up against theRavens rush defense. 3. Joe Flacco, QB, Baltimore -The Jets andthe Ravens are both good defenses only the Jetscan shut down the passing game as well. Flaccocould struggle. 4. Justin Forsett, RB, Seattle - The Ninersdefense has Pat Willis in the middle ready to shutdown the Seahawks zone scheme so just in case -don't start him. 5. Anquan Boldin, WR, Baltimore - I knowRevis has been out for the entire preseason, but

Mr. Cool - Miami QB Jacory Harris is one of themost composed drop back passers in the nation. Hestands tall in the pocket, has great mechanics...and thenhe waits. Harris has shown the propensity of waiting

just the right amount of time, but he often flirts withdisaster by holding the ball a bit too long. Against OhioStates productive secondary, he may be forced to holdthe ball a little longer than he wants. If Ohio State can

get some edge heat or intense pressure up in the A gapsfrom linebackers blitzing, he could turn it over creatingmajor problems for the Miami offense having to comefrom behind in the Shoe. But, if Harris can find hisoutlet throws early, mainly to tight end RichardGordon, to keep the chains moving, itll help hisconfidence. More importantly, itll speed up Mr. Coolsdecision making

In-Saine-ity- Whether the coaches, fans or opponentsconsider Brandon Saine Ohio States number oneback is somewhat irrelevant. No matter when he comesinto the game or who hes on the field with at any giventime, Saine will be a big factor in this game, especiallyout of the backfield catching the football. AgainstOregon in the Rose Bowl, on the field at the same time

with Dan Boom Herron, Saine ran a wheel route upthe sideline against a linebacker. Terrelle Pryor hithim in stride and Saine had a key touchdown in the firstquarter of that game. Its imperative that Saine get 12 to15 touches, alongside Herron who needs 12 to 15 touchesas well.

Stud Watch - Standing about 285 pounds with theability to play both DT and DE, Miamis Allen Baileyand Ohio States Cameron Heyward are physicalspecimens with NFL futures. With length and strengthas assets, they produce edge pressure in a much differentmanner than most. Consequently, the pressure is moreon Bailey chasing Pryor than for Heyward getting toHarris. Regardless, the studs must change the game.

Conclusion- No matter what happens in this game it wont be a blowout. The Hurricanes dont back down from anyone andthey appreciate the spotlight on the road more than most teams. But, the Buckeyes have too many weapons for Miamis defenseto stop in this matchup. Pryor will throw it more than he runs it, but itll be a couple of key runs from the pocket that hurt the U

Reid This Book- You often hear coaches say that theyMUST get the 22 best players on the field, in anycapacity. If thats truly the case, Florida State CB GregReid may need to play 150 snaps, splitting them up on

offense, defense and special teams. The simple fact ofthe matter is that Reid must impact this game for FSUto have a chance to win. Last weekend, Reid started atcorner, but he made a house call on a punt return tokick start the Florida State scoring brigade. FloridaState DC Mark Stoops didnt show much of his

gameplan last weekend, but this weekend, hes going tothrow the kitchen sink at OU. That may include Reidblitzing off the edge, which was something he was askedto do last year. But, he needs to get his touches onspecial teams and dont be surprised if he shows up onoffense as well in this game.

New and Improved - Last spring, we got a call fromour friend in Norman who told us that OU RBDeMarco Murray, in preparation for his senior seasonafter an injury plagued junior year, had cut his weightdown to 205. He then went out and had 218 yards on 35carries last week. As such, he put the onus on FloridaStates inexperienced front seven to limit his ability toget in and get out - slide inside a block and dart backoutside away from traffic. Keep him locked inside thetackles and beat on him all day long. It may not beenough, but its a start to slow down a rejuvenated #7.

    East meets West, sort of-

When Andrew Datko tookover as the starting left tackle at Florida State, helooked like a tight end playing tackle. But, the 3-yrstarter has grown into the role of protectingChristianPonders backside. But, facing Jeremy Bealmay behis most difficult test since facing UNCs Robert Quinn.

This will be a battle worth watching all day long.

Conclusion- I want desperately for FSU to be in the ball game in the fourth quarter to see how OU reacts to being in a tigh game for the 2nd consecutive week. QB Christian Ponder has the ability to control the offensive momentum againstquestionable OU secondary, but I dont think the FSU D can keep the Sooners out of the end zone. At home, OU controls FSU

Three the Hard Way - Penn States defensive frontseven didnt get tested last week against YoungstownState, but thatll change at 6:01 PM CST when

Alabamas offensive line hits them in the mouth on the

first play. Most importantly, though, the biggestproblem for Penn States front is handling hardcharging running back Trent Richardson. The formerEscambia High School star is one of the best downhillrunners in the nation and his ability to burst past thefirst level at the line of scrimmage will be a majorproblem for the Penn State linebackers. If the PennState linebackers arent attacking the line of scrimmage,Richardson is going to rack up five and six yards a popevery time he touches the stone. At a minimum. ThePenn State defensive line must stack and shed and playoff blocks to keep the linebackers clean to run toRichardson unabated. Then, hope those three can make

    tackles. Good luck with that.

Look, wait, no duck-Joe Paterno and his offensivestaff must truly believe in his true freshman QB RobertBolden to throw him to the wolves in Tuscaloosa forhis first start. What makes this even more difficult isthat Nick Saban and DC Kirby Smart will showBolden a number of different looks, fronts, stunts andcoverages. Bolden needs the game to slow down in ahurry so he can figure out where and how Alabama isattacking him. He cant be a sitting duck with no clue.

The Barron of the Defense - The difference in this

being a rebuilding Alabama defense and a potentiallySEC-best defense is Mark Barronat strong safety. Heplays near the line of scrimmage well, but in this one, hell be shadowing Penn State RB Evan Roysterthroughout. When Royster moves out to the slot, typically he has a major advantage on a linebacker, butBarron will draw that assignment, limiting 22s impact.

Conclusion - Going into this game, if youd have told me in the summer that Mark Ingram and Marcell Dareus would babsent from this game, I wouldve thought Penn State had a chance. However, now that game week is here, I think Penn Stacould get exposed. Bolden has a tremendous future in front of him, but this wont be his day against a motivated Bama D

AUBURN VS. MISSISSIPPI STATE Vegas says: Auburn-2.5/55

Five days. Thats all these two teams get inpreparation for one another which could make thisone of the more compelling games of the weekend,or a sloppy, mistake filled contest. Auburn may have

found a quarterback - Cam Newton - a biggunslinger who is the perfect fit for Gus Malzahnsoffense. Furthermore, Newton has some help in therun game with the crew of backs behind him, including true freshman Michael Dyer. However,

this is a different Mississippi State program.Defensively, the Bulldogs are talented on the edges, led by DE Pernell McPhee and the ability of theBulldog defensive line to fill gaps and not allow

Newton and the Auburn running backs to slicethose gaps and pick up huge chunks of yards.Ultimately, Auburn will pick up those yards, keepthe chains moving and win one in Starkville.PREDICTION: Auburn- 34 vs. Miss. St - 30

Although this rivalry game had a fantastic endinglast year, this years matchup may feel like a trueMichigan/Notre Dame rivalry with the way theWolverines thumped U Conn at home behind thesweet untied feet of QB Denard Robinson. If NotreDame fans were feeling overconfident, #16 canbring them right back down to earth. What worriesme most for the Irish is that the defense is still a

work in progress and the slightest opening can beexploited for huge gains by Robinson and the RBs.

The Irish will need to rely on the offense to controlthe clock, move the chains and put pressure onMichigan to score touchdowns each time down thefield. The Irish must win first and second down andforce Robinson into converting third and longsituations throughout the day. If Notre Damemisses tackles in space, it might be a long day. But,ND will find balance on offense and limitRobinsons ability to run around and make plays.PREDICTION: ND - 28 vs. Michigan- 21

You know what they say about Paybacks, right?Well, if the Houston Cougars are worth their salt, well all find out on Friday night. In last years

contest, Houston was coming off of two huge winsover Big 12 foes when it traveled to UTEP and wasrolled. And, by rolled, I mean massacred. RBDonald Buckram ran for 262 yards on 32 carries asthe Miners obliterated the 2009 Cougars defense.

That was then and, well, well all find out if anythinghas changed, truly changed, for the Cougars

As of the time of this writing, Buckram isquestionable, but it may not matter. The Cougarshave proven, under Kevin Sumlin, that they dont

take kindly to you beating them - theyll make youpay the next year. UTEP wasnt tested on Saturdayand neither was Houston, but UTEP needed tosee the game at a more rapid rate to prepare forthe Cougars. They didnt. QB Case Keenum willthrow for 500+ and 4 TDs in a big win.PREDICTION: Houston- 52 vs. UTEP - 24

    September 11, 2010 - SEC Network 11 am CST

GEORGIA VS. SOUTH CAROLINA Vegas says: South Carolina-3/49

When the AJ Green news came down this week, it was easy to take South Carolina hook, line andsinker. Although the game is in Columbia, the lackof an All-American at receiver makes South Carolinaa much easier pick, right? Right?!? Maybe, but Ihave major concerns about the Gamecocks goinginto this game. First of all, the offense made greatstrides against Southern Miss, but now its facing anew 3-4 scheme that doesnt have a lot on film toshow South Carolinas offensive staff.

Georgia OLB Justin Houston, who had a sack lastweek against ULL, has the speed to really frustratethe South Carolina tackles. Then, throw in the factthat he may be moving all around the formation, Imnot confident that South Carolina can find himand effectively block him. Offensively, the loss ofGreen forces QB Aaron Murray to spread the

wealth and look up former HS teammate tight endOrson Charles, which is a blessing in disguise.PREDICTION: Georgia- 23 vs. S. Carolina- 17
