Middle School Students Show-off Yearbook

Hillel introduced a new program this month designed exclusively for select Upper School students who seek rigorous educational experiences. Th is summer, Hillel will extend invitations for Grade 9 students to participate in the school’s piloted 2010-2011 Scholars Program. Th is accelerated course of study is designed for those who meet set criteria refl ecting their careers at Hillel or other schools through Grade 8.

Paired with the International Baccalaureate approach and a traditional Jewish curriculum, this is South Florida’s only program of its kind, said Nick Hinrichsen, Principal of Grades 6-12. Hillel’s Scholars Program creates collaborative and individual experiences signifi cant to higher education, building a community of students and educators dedicated to scholarship.

Hillel Scholars participate in core studies as a group separate from other students in courses designed just for them. Th ese classes are taught by esteemed faculty, administrators and guest lecturers where students work one-on-one with teachers on special projects, take online university courses and enroll in Advanced Placement courses as early as Grade 9. All the while, Hillel’s values are upheld, starting the school day with tefi lah and keeping with the Judaic Studies curriculum.

Scholars round out their learning with the rest of Hillel’s student body through electives, service learning and other co-curricular programs.

“Hillel’s Scholars Program will challenge those students who desire a program that pushes them beyond a typical college preparatory curriculum,” Hinrichsen said. “Students will demonstrate their ability to think critically in an environment that requires them to analyze, synthesize and evaluate.”

Hillel Scholars have proven excellence through academic performance and model behavior. They engage with faculty, community leaders and curious students like themselves in settings that foster creativity, investigation and innovation. For more information and to review the criteria, visit the “Academics” section of the Hillel Web site (hillel-nmb.org).

Three Seniors Earn Silver Knight Honorable Mention

Three Hillel seniors were awarded Honorable Mention plaques for 2010 Silver Knight Awards. Mazel tov to Rebecca Battat for drama, Ilana Dreyfuss for athletics and Shira Papir for journalism.

Silver Knight Awards are presented to 15 Miami Dade students every May, and only three students in each of the 15 categories receive honorable mention. This year, more than 600 students were nominated for Silver Knight Awards, the Miami Herald’s prestigious award recognizing outstanding students in South Florida. The Award program, instituted in 1959, is one of the nation’s most highly regarded student awards programs.

Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Hillel Ambassadors, 2010-2011

After an extensive application and review process, 14 students were named 2010-2011 Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Hillel Ambassadors, recipients of the merit-based scholarship.

This program was established in 2009 to recognize students in Grades 6-12 who demonstrate their commitment to learning in extraordinary ways. The students represent Hillel as ambassadors to the extended community, bringing to life the Hillel mission through accomplishment and talent in the classroom, on the field, on stage or at a community project.

The Ambassadors will receive grants toward Hillel tuition for 2010-2011. Mazel Tov to Susy Cohen, Sivanne Mendelson, Abraham Milhem, Jessica Rosner, Sarah Angress, Avi Hirshbein, Margot Romano, David Woldenberg, Ari Gontovnik, Chelsea Sheridan, Galit Cohen, Alexandra Dreyfuss, Isaac Epstein and Jade Wollschlaeger.

The program was developed generously by the Jaime and Raquel Gilinski family in an effort to further support education at Hillel and recognize students who will become future leaders.

Throughout the last two years, HIP/PTA has raised more than $100,000 for projects, programs and events to benefit students from Early Childhood through Grade 12. That was a priority Amy Chafetz set as HIP/PTA president.

“We wanted to make sure our allocations were spread evenly across the school for items that would impact as many students

as possible,” said Chafetz, who completes her two-year term in June.

From the additions of laptop carts and a parent education series to the continued grants for the Grade 9 Israel trip and flowers in the butterfly garden, HIP/PTA has worked to fund programs throughout campus.

Incoming president Dr. Michele Scheck plans to continue the momentum that HIP/PTA has established at Hillel. “Amy took our PTA to another level. Her leadership was a blessing to Hillel,” Scheck said.

Incoming HIP/PTA President Michelle Scheck and outgoing president Amy Chafetz

“Next year I hope to continue to increase our numbers and our strength and help the school in anyway it needs us.”

The Hillel community can look forward to an extension of current events, along with the addition of new and exciting programs that will be announced when school resumes. At the first meeting, parents will be able to volunteer as sports boosters, grade leads or for many other volunteer positions. Thank you, HIP/PTA!

Hillel’s class of 2010 accepted their diplomas before 1,000 relatives, friends and members of the extended community on May 24.

“Every year our graduates amaze me with their talents and accomplishments, and this year is no different. What a tremendous group of students we have in the class of 2010!” said Dr. Adam C. Holden, Head of School.

College Guidance Director Dr. Allan Wolf said the class of 2010 earned more than $1 million in merit-based college scholarships, and nearly 90 percent of seniors received acceptance to their first-choice of school.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM BLOSSOMS

Dvar Torah for Summer

By Rabbi Chaim Albert, Rabbinic Head

“Acquire for yourself a friend and judge people favorably.” (Ethics of our Fathers, Chapter 1)Wouldn’t it be a much easier task to learn to judge favorably before fi nding friends? The Mishnah is teaching us that the goal is not to fi nd the easiest friends, but rather the best group of friends. Our peers have strong infl uences on our own growth and development - academically, professionally, personally. With that in mind, it is up to our individual selves to always remember to judge friends - and strangers - favorably. One of the greatest opportunities over the summer vacation is to use our time to build good relationships...old and new. May Hashem bless us with loyal friends who help us grow to our full potential.
