As the B'nai Israel community approaches another New Year, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very healthy and sweet year. May it be a year of blessings for you. May it be a year of peace, health, and well-being; a year in which you see the fulfillment of hopes and dreams. May it also be a year in which those of you who are suffering financially find the improvement necessary to make your life and the life of your family better. And may it be a year in which the stresses of your life be turned into the peaceful

moments that you need in order to find the sense of balance and harmony necessary for good health, both spiritually and physically.

The past year has not been an easy one for our community, for our region, our country, the world, and for many of you. The economy is certainly not yet where we hoped and still hope it will be. The memories of the BP oil spill still haunt all of us. And it is disturbing to read and hear every day of the inability of politicians and government officials simply to listen to the voices of others and move from their own self-interests to compromise and work out solutions with others. And, of course, violence, hatred, bigotry, and discrimination still fill the hearts of so many.

The Jewish community in our own area is suffering. We have lost many of the organizations and institutions that can offer support to those individuals, families, and synagogues that are suffering. There is unquestionably a decreasing Jewish population and an increasing unaffiliated population both of which are negatively affecting congregational growth and in some instances existence itself.

In spite of all of this, however, I am filled with hope in the future, in your future, mine, and our community's. I believe that our country and the world will turn around toward a positive direction as well. This hope is a faith that I have in people. I know that reality does not always prove this to be so, but I have always been impressed by the words of the Torah in which after God created the human being, the Divine Creator said: and "he was Tov m'od.” (very good) God implanted goodness in every human being, and therefore we have the ability to harness this goodness into positive energy to change the negative into the positive, the evil into the good, the hopeless into the hopeful, the darkest of nights into the brightest of days.

I will be devoting my High Holy Day sermons this year to the theme of "Hope in the Future", with the hope of injecting my hope and positive energy into your minds, hearts, and souls. I, therefore, urge you to attend services this year and to attend all of them. Some of you view these holy days as days off from work or school. These are days in which you belong in the synagogue and I assure you that this year your presence will prove worthwhile.

I pray that I will be able to lift you up and give you hope. I know that your presence will lift me up as well. The way we will tackle the problems of our lives

About our Services Our Friday night worship is conducted in English and Hebrew. Services are every Friday evening. Our Shabbat Services are the 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th Fridays at 8:00 pm. We have a Family Service geared toward school age children the 2nd Friday of each month at 7:15 pm. The Rabbi will offer Birthday and Anniversary Blessings for the month at this service. We also have a Children’s Service geared toward pre-school children the 3rd Friday of each month at 7:00 pm. Please come and join us.

Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program begins on Monday night September 20th at 8 pm. The class, taught by the Rabbi and Yaffa Lecce, will begin by teaching the Hebrew alphabet. By June, all students will become Bar/Bat Mitzvah, reading from the Torah. No prior Hebrew knowledge is necessary. The class will be on Monday nights until June.

Beginners Hebrew for Adults begins on Monday night September 20th at 8 pm. Within six months all students will be able to read any Hebrew text. Why not be able to read the four Questions at this year’s Passover Seder and make your children proud of you?

Torah at Panera will begin on Saturday, September 11th at 10 am. This class has proved to be a real winner, attracting many students to Panera’s restaurant on Sunrise Highway in Sayville as they enjoy Torah study while eating a good breakfast.

The Rabbi will begin a class on teaching the Books of the Bible for Adults. The Jewish people are the people of the book so if you are a part of this people you should learn about this book. Did you know it is called Tanach in Hebrew and what this word stands for? Did you know there are thirty-nine books to the Hebrew Bible? During the course of the year the Rabbi will teach selected readings from the Bible’s three main sections beginning with the Book of Joshua. The books will be studied from a spiritual as well as historical and literary perspectives. The class will be held on the fourth Thursday of the month beginning on October 28th at 8 pm. Please note change in the schedule from last month’s bulletin due to a conflict.

The Rabbi is continuing his special Adult Education Self-study Program. This year the program will be "the Great Works of Jewish Religious Life". The class will look at the Mishnah, Midrash, Talmud, Legal Codes, Respona Literature, and the Zohar. The first introductory class will be held on Thursday night November 4th at 8 pm.

The Rabbi will hold Meditation Moments for peace and healing on the first Friday night of the month after services.

If there are other programs you would like to see in the Temple, please write or speak with Rabbi. Please RSVP to the office so the Rabbi knows to expect you at the above mentioned programs.

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and with little time to reflect, we move directly to thoughts and plans for the High Holy Days. The “season” begins with our Selichot Service on the Saturday evening immediately prior to Rosh Hashanah. Even if you haven’t made reservations for the dinner, all are wel-come to the service that begins about 9:30 PM on September 4th. Join us for an opportunity to help make yourself ready for the special days to follow.

Temple preparations for the High Holy Days begin in early summer in an effort to make sure everything is in place for the biggest crowds of the year. Please reread our “guidelines” letter and do your best to comply with some simple ground rules that will make the High Holy Day experience at B’nai Israel more spiritual and enjoyable for all.

Plan to arrive early and save your own seat by actually being in Temple on time. As a matter of security, be prepared to show your ticket at the door and please cooperate with our ushers who have volunteered to do a difficult job for the benefit of the entire congregation.

When you enter the lobby, look for our new “donor wall” on your left. The “wall” was donated by the estate of long time Temple member Stan Sonkin and his family. As a member of the Donations Committee, Stan hoped

to encourage the giving of significant gifts to B’nai Israel by recognizing contributions of $1,000 or more from Temple families and friends. Several plaques have already been engraved. There are a number of blank plaques that we hope to dedicate in acknowledgement of donations received as a result of our annual Kol Nidre appeal this month. The “wall” is designed to “grow” by adding additional plaques as the number of donors grows.

We would be delighted to add your name to our new wall but will be grateful as well for any size contribution you are able to make. Each year, High Holy Day income provides a major financial boost to B’nai Israel. We have done well in the past, but given the state of the economy, this year we must do even better just to make up lost ground. I will speak with you in more detail about our financial need when I see you all in Temple very soon.

As we approach the new year, Jan and I wish you and your loved ones a healthy, safe, and happy 5771.

Welcome back to our $ a Week Club News for 5770/2009-2010. So many of you began your commitment to this wonderful and painless way to donate regularly to support our Temple, and now it’s time to “finish up” this year and begin the next one.

Remember, if you are paid in full for a fifty-two week year ending at Succoth, you will earn your special certificate at Simchat Torah. So “catch up” now from our summer vacation.

$1­A­Week­Club News 

Registration for the 2010-2011 school year is ongoing. If you have not received the registration forms, or if you have any questions, please call the Temple office.

The Religious School book sale is Tuesday evening, September 7th from 6:00-8:00. Students' class assignments and the calendar for the year will be given out that night. You will also have the opportunity to pick up a candy case to help support the annual fundraiser.

Family Fun for Sukkot!                 Ritual Committee 

Sukkot begins four days after Yom Kippur. It is one of the three pilgrimage festivals. Sukkot, a Hebrew word meaning “booths” or “huts”, refers to the Jewish festival of giving thanks for the fall harvest, as well as the commemoration of the forty years of Jewish wandering in the desert after Sinai. In ancient times, people would make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem to bring the first portion of their harvests to the priests to show thanks to God.(urj.org)

Each family can create and decorate their own sukkah in their own individual way. Using real or artificial fruit and vegetables is traditional but today anything goes. Build a sukkah using a big appliance box with the top and one side cut out, string sheets to form walls somewhere in your home, or turn a small area in your yard into a sukkah for a week. Decorate with plastic fruits and vegetables or make your own decorations! Here are some suggestions for making sukkah decorations. Enjoy!!!

Free Form Foil Fruit

Materials: newspaper, aluminum foil, masking tape, tempera paints, brushes, string for hanging

Procedure: Crumple newspaper into a fist sized ball. Then mold sheets of foil around it to make different fruit shapes. Paint with tempera paint. The foil will show through, giving the fruit a shiny effect. When paint is dry, use a sharp instrument to make a hole through the top and put a string through the hole for hanging in the sukkah.

Glittery craft dough star.

Materials: craft dough, glitter, string

Procedure:

Use your favorite craft dough recipe to make stars using cookie cutters or cut two triangles from the dough and place one on top of the other upside down to form a Star of David. While the dough is still damp, sprinkle on glitter and make a hole in the top to thread string through for hanging.

The observance of the High Holy Days begins on the first of Elul which this year is on Tuesday night August 10th, followed by Selichot on September 4th.

Selichot is not only a wonderful dinner and a time for Temple families and friends to come together, it is also a preparation for the holy days to come, as many of the prayers, such as Avinu Malkeinu, are a part of the service.

This year's Selichot will also have a discussion on the important subject, "The Future of the State of Israel."

Erev Rosh Hashanah begins on Wednesday night September 8th with services the next day. When lighting the candles on that night the following blessing is recited:

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech haolam, asher kid; shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Yom tov. Amen.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who hallows us with mitzvot , commanding us to kindle the light of the holy day. Amen.

Be sure to attend the morning service on the 9th to hear the stirring sounds of the Shofar.

We will meet at 1:30 pm by the Great River at Dowling College for Tashlich. During this beautiful and enjoyable service we throw pieces of bread onto the moving body of water to symbolize our throwing away of our past misdeeds in order to begin the New Year with a clean slate.

This service is followed by our Family Service. We urge you to invite your friends and their children to this special service of everyone, regardless of age.

Although we at B'nai Israel do not have services the second day, you are welcome to join Rabbi Moss as he brings the New Year to residents of various skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in the community. The schedule will be found on the Temple website.

The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are holy as well and given the title, Esreh Y'mei Teshuvah, the Ten Days of Repentance. Within the liturgy special prayers, including Avinu Malkeinu, are recited each day as the worshipper continues to turn his/her heart, mind, and soul to God and God's design for living life to its fullest each day.

Yom Kippur begins on Friday night September 17th. As it is Shabbat, this Yom Kippur is particularly holy.

The blessing over the candles for that night is:

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech haolam, asher kid; shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat v'Yom HaKippurim. Amen.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us to kindle the light of Shabbat and Yom Kippur. Amen.

As the Temple is open the entire next day, please know that you can remain in the Temple throughout all the services. Many people enjoy the Rabbi's special meditation for the New Year held in the Hebrew School building between the morning and family service.

As the Jewish calendar moves us from a day of serious reflection to one of rejoicing over life, we begin to prepare for Sukkot with our Sukkah decorating on Wednesday night September 22nd at 7 pm. There will also be a brief service afterward to begin this beautiful service of thanksgiving for the fall harvest. This year B'nai Israel will use the Sukkot holiday to raise our awareness of the many environmental issues that need to be confronted by our community and our country.

Please remember that a special way to observe all these holy days and holidays is to bring donations of food to the Temple as a part of our congregation's High Holy Day Outreach to those in need in our community.

Trip to the Greek Synagogue Please mark down on your calendar Sunday October 24th. The Rabbi will lead us to the Kehala Kedosha Jannina Synagogue in Manhattan. This is the synagogue of the Greek Jewish community of New York. The cost for the day is $40 a person and will include a ride on a luxury coach to the synagogue for a tour of it and the museum, and a kosher Greek lunch. We will stop at Yonah Shimmel's for our annual knish breakfast. Please RSVP by September 15th.

The summer is coming to a close but we are ready to have an interesting and informative year. We look forward to seeing old and new friends. This year’s “Meet and Greet” will be on the 21st of September at 7:30 pm. We will discuss the programs and renew our focus. We hope to see you there.

Blood Drive I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to those of you who helped plan and set up, and to those who stayed throughout the past blood drives to help. And, a special thanks to those of you who came to donate blood. As you all know, there is a constant need for blood, especially in the summer months, and we hope that you all try to donate as often as you are able. Donations ­ We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.

Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Condolences The B’nai Isarel Congregational Family extends its deepest condolences to the Rosolinsky Family on the loss of Marlene’s father, Israel Schaefer and to the Stant family on the loss of Jesse’s husband, Everett.
