Meaningful change becomes possible when individuals connect around a shared purpose, across neighborhoods, communities, regions, states. The MS movement is no different. We have set our sights on common goals: to ensure those affected by MS can live their best lives, and to free the world of multiple sclerosis, once and for all.

Together we walk, ride, share our stories, learn, support, volunteer, mobilize and move. Thanks to your collective efforts, we have funded critical research, helped families navigate the winding road of life with MS, and advocated for the needs of the MS community. It’s exciting to see what we’re accomplishing together.

THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY, GREATER NORTHWEST CHAPTER educates, inspires and empowers those affected by multiple sclerosis. We create innovative programs to meet the needs of people with MS and their families, host exciting fundraising events to give supporters a meaningful role in the MS movement, and fund cutting-edge research into treatments and a cure. With a passion for bringing about a world free of MS, we help everyone affected by the disease to live richer, healthier, more independent lives.

Headquartered in Seattle with offices in Anchorage and Billings, the Chapter serves over 12,000 people living with MS and more than 72,000 others including friends, caregivers and health care professionals in Alaska, Montana, Central and Western Washington. We are an affiliate of the National MS Society, which was founded in 1946.

Looking ahead to 2012 Our 2011 Chapter-wide needs assessment is helping us improve programs and services in 2012, while we continue to explore how best to assist the entire spectrum of people affected by MS.

Self-Advocacy

We will build our capacity to respond to individualized needs, and equip people with the tools and knowledge to be strong champions for themselves, especially related to SSDI, legal rights, health insurance, and financial planning.

Program Guide

In order to give everyone affected by MS access to the essential informa-tion and assistance found on the Chapter website, we are creating a reference booklet that includes all Chapter programs, services and resources.

Education

The monthly teleconference series for 2012 will focus on managing cognitive changes and fatigue, exercise and wellness, and emotional health. Exciting new developments and challenges in progressive MS research will be highlighted in the North American Education Program. See the Chapter calendar at MSnorthwest.org for more info.

Walk MS

We will continue to build Walk MS as a place for everyone to be a part of the MS movement, to support each other and move forward together—from the newly diagnosed, to the friend of someone living with the disease. Join us at one of 21 Walks across three states.

n Increased donations to MS research by 15 percent in response to the MS NOW campaign. Our Chapter contributed more than $1.4 million in 2011.

n Raised awareness of programs and services in Alaska and Montana by hosting 17 community education programs throughout the year. In turn, we saw a 50 percent increase in calls from Montana, and a 64 percent increase from Alaska, allowing us to provide much-needed individualized guidance and support.

n Passed legislation to allow foreign trained and licensed physicians who specialize in MS care to be fully licensed in Washington State. This will help attract and boost the number of practitioners who treat MS in Washington. Visit MSnorthwest.org and click on Advocacy to read about more successes.

n Granted 76 scholarships worth $223,000 to help students touched by MS pursue their dreams of a college education. From Richland, WA to Molt, MT scholars came from all across the Chapter.

n Doubled the impact of our financial assistance program through collaboration and perseverance. In 2011, we spent more than $400,000 in financial assistance and garnered another $400,000 for people living with MS from partner organizations, foundations and agencies.

n Mobilized teams of supporters and friends at 21 Walk MS events and three Bike MS rides. Total number of participants for all events in 2011: 13,999.

n Expanded opportunities for people living with MS to receive compassionate, professional care management services when faced with confusing information and overwhelming decisions, through new contracts with two independent living agencies.

n Honored by the commitment of three volunteers from our Chapter community who received national awards. Dr. George Kraft—MS Achievement Award for 35 years of service; Thom and Gwen Kroon—Funding the Mission Award for their outstanding contributions; and Ryan Asdourian—Volunteer of the Year for his leadership as a Walk MS team captain.

In January 2006, after experiencing three falls and tingling in her body, Cate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Recently, she began having challenges with mobility and turned to the Greater Northwest Chapter for assistance in modifying her home. An MS Navigator helped Cate create plans for how she would receive in-home care if that becomes necessary, then worked to connect Cate with local and national resources to cover the costs of remodeling.

The Society provided a portion of the funds to remodel two downstairs bedrooms into a single ADA compliant bedroom with a bathroom, and leveraged that support to secure additional funding from St. Patrick’s Hospital Foundation in

Missoula, Friends of Man and the MS Foundation. The Chapter also assisted Cate in securing a low-interest home modification loan through the USDA to cover the remaining costs.

“To leave this house and to leave Lolo is unthinkable,” she said. Thanks to your donations, Cate won’t have to. She can enjoy the home she worked so hard to build for many years come.
