Nobody likes a stenchy cycling kit, but how do you decypher all the manufactures jargon telling you to use a very

expensive, highly specific detergent to clean your treasured nix with??

Well, grab a pen and paper here’s some super simple tips to keep those badboys like new for longer.

Firstly, If you arrive home from a good solid session of sweating and you clothes are soaked, get them in the wash stat. If

you can’t put them in the wash for some reason, hang them out in fresh air. Cycling kit, covered in sweat and damp as

well is a party for bacteria and all kinds of smelly stuff. Sweat also contains high levels of salts and will damage thesynthetic materials of your kit. The more time your kit spends covered in sweat (sweat hours) the faster the material will

lose its feel and elasticity.

Now, when washing your prized cycling kit always double check the manufactures specific instructions. Materials used in

cycle clothing are constantly changing and the washing instructions are likely to change with it. But here are some general

tips to get you on your way:

1.  Use a cold wash – this ensures that none of the colours will run and turn your socks a ghastly shade of pink. Heat

treatment is also often used in the production of technical fabrics so hot washes are not recommended.

2.  Gentle machine wash will usually do the trick for your dirties if you have just been out on the road. For all of the

mountain bikers out there, you may need to try the regular wash cycle (this will help to take out the extra kilo of

dirt you hide in your jersey after a ride).

3.  Fragranced or detergents with added fabric softener are not recommended. These additives may interfere withthe properties of the technical fibers.

4.  Throwing all your cycling kit (including gloves) in the wash is fine all together, just make sure that all zippers and

velcro are zipped up or closed. These will cause damage to your other clothing if left open.

5.  If you intend on throwing all your cycling kit in the wash with the weekly load use a delicates bag. This will

protect your precious team kit becoming stretched or damaged by the myriad of other clothes in the machine.

6.  Line drying is fine, but not in full sunlight. Personally I find rack drying in the shade the easiest. Synthetic fibres

shouldn’t be put in the dryer (unless you want to scrape their melted remains off the inside of the dryer) or

ironed either.

7.  Over time you may find that your chamois might start to lose its ‘showroom fresh’ feel. This is going to happen

regardless as all things deteriorate with age and use. But there are products available to help keep this puppy a bit

softer. We are currently stocking a good range of chamois creams which help to keep your chamois soft and your

bum happy. Come and down and pick our brains if your clothes are giving you grief as there are heaps of options

and alternatives out there.

This month’s feature is on cleaning of your cycle clothing. If you have a particular query or something you wish to be

featured in this section, drop us a email with your suggestion or come down to the shop and let us know!
