Again, no response, nada, zero, zilch. I know that for a large segment of our membership, belonging to TAA is simple, sign up, pay your dues, and sit back and enter the art shows of your choice, or not. Passivity is the name of the game so far. Unfortunately, passivity is not enriching the TAA coffers, and not creating a positive image of TAA to the community. If you are not paying the passive membership fee, then you need to belly up to the volunteer bar and make your name heard. The schedule for the TAA shows appears in this copy of the Artline. All four shows give a you a chance to volunteer and to bring the functions to fruition. Please attend the general meeting on May 15. At the general meeting in May we will be concentrating on new methods of fund raising, and building a fire under our membership to create more participation in TAA functions. I say this because we had to cancel our last fund raising function on May 1, at the Birdneck Art in the Park function because of lack of participation. We sent out at least two membership wide emails and received zero, nada, zilch, response. It was also an open call, and that resulted in three positive responses from non members. When we have to cancel a function that should produce revenue we put ourselves in the position of not being able to fund our shows, our prizes and our monetary contributions to the causes that deserve our largesse. “And the Winners are…” A 2011 Tidewater Art Alliance Exhibition of Past First Place Award Recipients

This special yearlong juried exhibit opportunity looks to visually communicate the uniqueness of our region within the local office of a very dedicated public servant, Senator Mark Warner, by highlighting works by selected artists within the group of individuals that have been past 1st place Tidewater Art Alliance (TAA) award recipients. The exhibition is coordinated by TAA in collaboration with Senator Mark Warner’s representatives with the goal to support, develop and promote the visual arts in the Hampton Roads area. The honored artists included in this exhibition are: Al Benas, Barbara Henning Loomis, James Warwick Jones, Reineke Leenders, Catherine Mein, Mary Lee Ruff, Slavko Tirkajla, John Tobin, Gemma Wallace and Lee Gerry Wertheimer. The exhibition was developed by Susan Hirschbiel & Suzanne Watson, past TAA President & current board member. A sincere Thank you to Susan Hirschbiel, Joan Brock & Suzanne Mastracco who served as show jurors and Betsy Rivers-Kennedy, as Exhibition Chair.

Submitting items for Artline Please be sure to include “Artline” in the subject line of your message! (...unless you want your message to get lost in the tons of email your editor receives every day.) If your message doesn’t say “Artline” it might get rejected as trash! Each photo needs its own caption, in its own email. Please send each photo, properly captioned, in a separate email. Use another email for each additional photo, along with its caption. That way your Editor won’t get photos mixed up with the wrong caption. What’s a proper caption? Please write a full sentence, identifying the principal people or art pieces in the photo, with an explanation of what’s going on (which event, award, etc.) And do include “Artline” in your subject line! Please!!

Volunteers are always needed! (save $20 off next year’s member fee) Call the Volunteer Coordinator,

Anna, at 581-1880

A Note about Kudos Submissions: In order for Kudos Korner to applaud TAA Members, it is important for individual artists to submit their own good deeds! The information used in Call for Artists and Educational articles are based on submissions

and documented hearsay. Submissions can be made via email to [email protected] by the 15th of every month for the next edition of

our Artline Newsletter. Please be sure to include “Artline” in the subject line of your message!

Don’t be bashful! Won a prize? Got into a national show? Been selected as a juror?

Let us hear about your art accomplishments!

We support, develop and promote visual arts in Hampton Roads.

A note from Rieneke Leenders about the 2011 TAA BOOK: Here is what I need from all TAA members who have exhibited in this 2010-2011 season: Please send me jpegs of at least 1MB (1000KB) size of (only!) the work that you had or will have in a TAA show between August 2010 and July 2011. Rename the JPEG: Your last name first, then your first name, then title of your work, medium, size, and indicate which TAA show it was in: (mem for members show, min for miniature show, port for portfolio show, fund for red cross show, theme for theme show) Please help me save hours of work by doing this according to these specifications. If I will have to do this for you and everyone else, imagine at least 2 minutes times about 300 pictures… And please check your jpeg size before you send: 1MB and up can be used on a full page, but any jpeg under 200KB can only be printed postage stamp size! Send to: [email protected] From the winners, I would also like to get: A headshot, so we will be able to put a face with your name. A bio, resume, or artist statement. Remember, winners win a full page in the book, it is a chance to promote yourself. You can also add your web address, your blog or whatever you think will help to make yourself visible. From the Exhibition Chairs I would like to get a bio or resume and the jurors statement from the juror of the show you organized. Please help to make this book a success by your full cooperation. This is all I need you to do. I will do the rest, but if some of you don’t participate, the book, and with that the reputation of your organization will be disadvantaged. And here is the link to last year’s book: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1566147 Thank you, Rieneke
