Southfork News

“FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” Happy Father’s Day June 2011

What makes a Dad?

God took the strength of a mountain

The majesty of a tree

The warmth of the summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle’s flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,

He knew his masterpiece was complete,

And so,

He called it…..Dad!!!!

Hurricane season is Here!

Hurricane season is upon us and officially starts on the

1st of June.

Before the wind starts to blow, there are a few items

that you should stow. Once we get information from

the weather bureau that a possible hurricane is nearing

the Tampa area we should all be ready and follow the

advice of the officials.

It’s a good idea to put away any of your lawn

decorations and or furniture that could become

airborne missiles in a forceful wind. Don’t forget

sidewalk lighting fixtures, wind chimes, flags and potted

plants!

These items along with any patio furniture are best

moved to your shed/garage for the duration of the

storm.

Make sure you have items available to use and packed

including can foods, medicines etc. that should be

ready if any evacuation is necessary.

Heed the warning!!!!!!!

Be safe, Not sorry((((((((

From the Manager’s Office

First we would like to say "thank you" to all of you that showed up for the "meet the managers"

social. We were amazed and pleased at the number of residents that showed up! We only wish we

had time to meet everyone personally that attended. Thank you for the warm welcome!

A Friendly Reminder: Now down to some business. One of the responsibilities we have been charged

with is to ensure all residents follow the rules and regulations established for the community. Please

understand that these rules were put in place to help keep Southfork a community where people, like

yourselves, would want to live. And, occasionally, we all need to be reminded of some of those rules

and regulations. One area that has been brought to our attention where some "reminding" might be

needed is the pool area. Rule #4 states that "no alcoholic beverages are to be consumed in the pool

area …. unless the Board of Directors of the Homeowners Association approves the use thereof for a

special Homeowners Association function". Also, rule #2 states that, "No guests will be permitted at

the swimming pool …. without resident supervision". We want everyone to enjoy the pool but we also

need to ensure that we abide by the established rules. If you do not have an updated copy of the rules

(revised 1/1/09), please stop by our office to get your copy.

Some Trash Talk: Another area we would like to address is trash, specifically yard waste and white

goods (dishwashers, stoves, water heaters, etc.). Some residents have been dumping yard waste down

in the RV storage area. Please understand that area is not a dumping ground and yard waste does not

make a suitable pothole filler. During the last big rainstorm our backyard neighbors brought to our

attention that leaves that and been dumped in the road adjacent to the RV storage area washed down

into their driveways and yards. This does not help to maintain a "neighborly" relationship with our

neighbors. The waste collection company that we use will collect yard waste. All you need to do is leave

it by your driveway, like your regular trash, and they will pick it up on Wednesday and Saturday. Just

remember to cut and bundle branches and twigs in 4' lengths and bag leaves and other trimmings

before you put them out for collection. One of the things we are looking at is to provide a dumpster

specifically for yard waste in the spring and fall. Hopefully, that will help (and inspire) with the spring

and fall cleaning of our yards. We also need to remind folks that the dumpster located near the RV area

is for community management use and not for general residents' use. If you have something that you

feel needs to be put in the dumpster, please ask us or Andrew for the okay to do so.

Regarding white goods; the company we use will also collect these items, but for an additional fee. The

fee schedule for those items will be posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. We are also looking

at other arrangements for collection of those items. We will let you know what alternatives we can

provide once we get something in place.

As we said in the "meet the managers" social, we are open to your ideas and suggestions for maintaining

the nature and operation of Southfork. After all, it is your community.

John & Sandi

Women’s Club

On May 4th, 32 Ladies met in the clubhouse for their monthly meeting. I would like to thank Joann

Bowman, Dee Dee Southerland, Shirley Tiratto and Betty Toney for doing the social part of the

meeting.

The minutes of the previous meeting and all reports were read and approved.

Shirley Tiratto honored the person who had been married the longest, it was Joann Bowman with 61

years (to the same man) and she got a gift card of $20.00. Willie Stoever also got a gift card of $20.00

for having the combined most children and grandchildren which was (35).

We had a good laugh when we asked the ladies to tell all the sayings that their mother told them

when growing up. One of the answers was “You better wear a clean pair of underwear in case you get

into an accident.” We concluded that it did not matter where you grew up in any state or any

country, all mothers had the same sayings.

On June 19th, we will celebrate Father’s Day with an Ice Cream social at 3:00pm.

November 2nd, we will have a Baby Shower and this will be hosted by Willie Stoever and her

committee. Please look for baby clothes over the summer months for this big charity affair.

November 19th, we will have our annual bazaar and again we will be making baskets to be raffled like

the other years.

Next month on June 1st, we will be going to Village Inn at 11:00am and this will replace our monthly

meeting.

I also want to thank all the ladies who brought food for Day Star, it is very well appreciated.

PS Shirley Rouer, head of our Charity Committee, has lost her husband Chuck who has been very sick

for a long time. As soon as Shirley feels strong enough, we will have a get together to remember

Chuck, as he was a big part of Southfork. We are missing him a lot, especially at Bingo, when he

would come with all of his stuffed animals and toys.

Marielle, President

PS BABY BOTTLES

Please bring to the June meeting any baby bottles you have from the Pregnancy Center to collect change

donations. If you decided to not fill it, also bring back empty bottles. Thank you for your participation in

this project.

Southfork’s Mens Club

The Men’s Club met on May 5 and completed plans for the ladies breakfast on May 7th

. All of the men

joined in on work assignments and the result was a great time for all.

The Southfork ladies were treated to a nice meal and we thank them for coming to enjoy “their” day.

I want to say thanks to all the men who worked so hard to make this event a success!

We will gather at Smitty’s Smokehouse on Thursday, June 2, 2011, for breakfast and a short, informal

meeting. Hope to see you all there.

Don Duarte, Chairperson

Thank You Southfork

On Tuesday afternoon, May 10, 2011, at 2 pm the Southfork Community Hall was packed with over

100 residents who came to meet our New Manager’s, John & Sandi Bartoszek. Paul Johnston, who is

taking care of all the Heiler Communities introduced the two of them to their new community

neighbors.

Paul also mentioned just a few of the many items on the agenda here at Southfork to be either

replaced or repaired here and to make this the grandest place to live. Paul then asked the residents if

there were any questions especially for any of the noticed changes and a few did ask.

It was such a delight to see so many of you there to greet them “our” way and to welcome them with

open arms on the development and future of our great home here in “Southfork.”

There were refreshments of Cookies and Iced Tea and Coffee and everyone seemed to be relaxed and

enjoying their neighbors and talking of the great community we live in.

Best of luck to both John & Sandi and I know you will do us proud in all of your accomplishments and

I hope that we all live up to our promise of making this the best place to live in “Pasco County.”

The Golden Years

Whoever called them "Golden Years"

Was talking through his hat.

Our eyes go bad, we creak and groan, oh, oh.

Remember things? “We can't do that”.

We lose our teeth, our hair grows thin,

The people on TV mumble.

And no one wants our "sound advice";

When we try to help -- they grumble.

But we have something youth can't have.

In work the young are mired;

They have to earn their daily bread,

Not us! -- cause we're retired!

Newsletter Deliveries (Help Needed)

It has come to our attention that we need more people to help deliver the

newsletter to every house here in Southfork.

Our Block Captain Chairperson, Doris Grandy, explained to the Board that more people are needed for

the deliveries of the Newsletters, Phone Directories and any other information given for delivery to

reach every resident and all, “ Excess copies are to be returned back to the office manager”.

So for every Street here in Southfork we need a “ Block Captain” and an “Alternate” in case the Block

Captain is not available. Coverage is especially needed when any of the Block Captains are

Snowbirds………………..So if you have a friend who like’s to walk, this venture should take no more the 15

minutes to a half hour every month and it will also give you a chance to get in some exercise. (smile)

We need every street covered so please contact either Doris Grandy or Dot Cady and let them know you

Weather warning terms to know

Tropical Depression---An organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation

and maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less.

Tropical Storm---An organized system of strong thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and

maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph

Tornado Watch ----- Weather conditions favor the development of tornadoes. Stay home and be on alert for

severe weather and prepare to take shelter.

Tornado Warning ----- Funnel shaped clouds have been sighted nearby or detected by radar. Take shelter

immediately! Don’t linger outside or go about everyday business.

Hurricane---An intense tropical weather system of strong thunderstorms with a well-defined surface

circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74 mph

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Watch---Hurricane/tropical storm conditions are possible in the specified area,

usually within 36 hours. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or television for information.

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Warning---Hurricane/Tropical storm conditions are expected in the area usually

with in 24 hours

Hurricane Scale

Category 1 ----- Winds are 74 to 95 mph with no real damage to building structures.

Category 2 ----- Winds are 95 to 110 mph. There might be moderate damage to roofing, doors and windows

Category 3 ----- Winds are 111 to 120 mph. Damage can be extensive with some structural damage.

Category 4 ----- Winds are 131 to 155 mph. Some extreme damage will take place. Massive evacuation of

residential areas inland as far as 6 miles may be required

Category 5 ----- Winds are greater than 155 mph. Damage can be devastating. Some buildings may be

blown over or away. Massive evacuation may be required of residential areas on low ground within 5 to 10

miles of the shoreline.

Eye of the Hurricane

The eye of the hurricane is located inside the circular region of maximum winds and is in many ways the

most spectacular part of the storm. Strong winds may extend as much as 200 miles from the eye of the

hurricane and tornados often spin off from these storms. As the eye of a hurricane approaches, winds

diminish with amazing rapidity, from extreme violence to 15 mph or less. Rain ceases, and the middle cloud

vanishes, low clouds often remain, but with breaks through which the sun may shine. As the eye moves past

- usually in about an hour, the sequence of events is reversed, and increasing winds blow from the opposite

direction. It is very dangerous both before and after the eye hits.

Birds in Your Backyard

Create a bird-friendly habitat with plants that invite birds to your garden. Here are some tips to entice birds

right to your own backyard.

FOOD: Understanding a bird’s preferences will help you to determine which plants to grow. A seed-

eating chickadee will seek out daisy like flowers. Hummingbirds are happy with nectar from bee balm.

SHELTER: Offer protection and a cozy spot with plants that say, “Come on in!” Pine trees and junipers

are popular with many birds

NESTING: Feather your nesting area with a few brush piles and untidy corners, less lawn grass, more

weeds - example, thistles provide seeds and nesting materials for goldfinches.

WATER: Birds enjoy a continual source of water for drinking and bathing, whether in a nearby pond or

bird bath

DON”T FORGET A FEEDER: When a bird’s natural plant food is waning, a well-placed feeder can

catch a bird’s eye

When it all comes together, your garden just may become a bird’s favorite place to be!!!!!

If I had my life to live over

I’d try not to make as many mistakes, next time

I would relax, I would limber up

I would be crazier then I’ve been this trip

I know very few things I’d take seriously anymore

I would take more chances, I would take more trips

I would scale more mountains, I would swim more rivers

And I would watch more sunsets

I would eat more ice cream and fewer beans

I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones.

You see…I was one of those people who lived seriously and sensibly and sanely, hour after hour and day after day.

Oh, I’ve had my moments, and if I had to do it over again, I’d have many more of them.

If I had to do it all over again, I’d travel lighter, much lighter than I have. I would start barefoot earlier in the spring,

and stay that way later in the fall. And I would ride more merry-go-rounds, and catch more gold rings, and greet more

people, and pick more flowers, and dance more often and love, kiss and hug more!

Kitchen Island In Clubhouse!

This roving reporter, recently on the prowl, is proud to report on a recycle project undertaken

by a few good men here at Southfork.

Recently some residents had some remodeling done in their kitchen and in doing so removed their

kitchen island to the curb with a “free” sign attached. Well, a neighbor just happened to be going by and

noticed the freebie just sitting there. He went on to the Village Inn for dinner, all the while thinking,

“just what could I use that island for”?

On his way home the cabinet was still sitting at the curb so he went up the street to retrieve it with his

4-wheeled dolly.

A day later during Monday morning coffee he mentioned to a couple of his comprades and esteemed

colleagues, that he had the cabinet and what would they think of installing it in the clubhouse kitchen to

increase counter and cabinet space?

After a short executive session, some fast measurements and calculations led to the unusual site of

seeing two men sitting on the tailgate of a pickup pulling that cabinet up the hill behind the truck on the

dolly at the sizzling rate of speed of 7 MPH.

The Monday morning clubhouse line dancers were shocked and awed to see that cabinet come thru the

doors into the kitchen. The three highly skilled and mechanically adept cabinet installers then checked

with John, the new manager for his approval, and then set upon the task of fitting the cabinet to the

kitchen. After disassembly to square the cabinet and reattach the loose top and one to trip for Lowe's

for new handles and corner trim the cabinet was reassembled, wiped clean of fingerprints and deemed

finished and ready for immediate use.

The next time you are in the vicinity stop at the clubhouse and check out this project. Then when you

get a chance, please thank our elder statesman and his lovely bride, Chuck and Helen Stowe for their

generosity in donating the cabinet and Pete Logoyda, Bob Downs and Jim Morvatz for their use of their

skills to recycle the cabinet and put it too good use.

This roving reporter is on the trail once again checking fences and working to bring you the latest and

greatest in breaking news here at this place called Southfork.

Stray Cats in Southfork

I am writing this story at 3am on a Friday morning, April 22nd because of a few stray cats on our street

who decided to come visit our carport and fight and then marking their territory by “messing” in the dirt

next to the carport.

Unfortunately, taking pity on these cats by regularly feeding them is the wrong thing to do. As long as

there’s a limited amount of food for one cat in a neighborhood, the population kind of stays in balance.

Upsetting the balance by setting out bowls of cat chow and water results in attracting more cats. We

now have a family of 4 cats who have taken up residence on our street because of the feeding and they

are using our carport and our neighbors as their playgrounds.

The neighborhood “cat lovers” don’t realize that these cats may have flea and ear mite infestations and

can spread diseases that can infect your own pet. There are no rabies vaccines or health checks for

feline aids or feline leukemia for these cats. None of these females are spayed, nor are the males

neutered and no way of knowing if this is indeed true because of younger cats hanging around.

Property damage is attributed to feral cats and well as strays. Not only do they damage or destroy

flower gardens and tear up trash, but they can ruin a car’s paint job and shred the screens on doors and

windows. A male cat spraying to mark his territory can turn a porch into the foulest smelling place on

earth.

Rule #5 of the Southfork Rules and Regulations: A maximum of two small inside pets are permitted,

however in order to be allowed to live in the community all pets must be registered in full compliance

with the community’s established Pet Guidelines (incorporated herein by reference)

Please everyone, stop and think before putting food out for these strays. Help to get rid of these

unwanted animals by not feeding them and they will find homes elsewhere and not in our

neighborhoods.

A SHOCKING DISCOVERY!!

To go in another direction this roving reporter has decided to take on a

different subject this month. In order to give you a little history this guy has been having

electrical problems with my home for over a year now. Every now and then just a certain part of my

house would lose electrical power. As you all know I have done extensive remodeling which resulted in

having to extend some of the electric lines to accommodate new doors etc. In addition to the cosmetic

changes I have made, I have also changed out every electrical outlet, switch, ceiling fan and light in the

house. This house was built in 1992 and installed here at Southfork in 1993. I began to notice that many

of the switches did not have a “crisp” feel to them when activated and the outlets were loose and cords

plugged into them just did not feel tight enough to make a good connection.

Because of the intermittent loss of power to just certain parts on the house I began paying particular

attention to those circuits involved in trying to track down the electrical demons. After replacing all of

those switches and outlets, I started testing the circuit breakers to the areas that were affected. All of

those breakers would still be on and not “tripped” during those periods when the power would go out.

This made me even more suspicious of certain things. At one point I called TECO and one of their

technicians came out and inspected the meter base and the connections up to the meter. He pulled the

meter and thoroughly cleaned the connections and told me that the problem was not in any of their

equipment and that the problem must lie between the meter and the house. Of course this is now your

responsibility as the homeowner.

I then started by checking the connections in the outside breaker box and inside the home in the main

electrical power box. All connections were tight and clean and not showing any sign of deterioration.

Then I started replacing individual breakers on the circuits involved thinking that I must have a breaker

getting old and going bad. Still the problem persisted very intermittentally. This problem was starting to

drive me nuts.

Finally my brother, who also lives in Florida, and is a electrician, came over this past weekend and we

really tore into this problem. We finally diagnosed and solved the problem by replacing the main outside

circuit breaker (150 AMP). The almost 20 year old breaker was very corroded where it makes the

connection in the outside box which is exposed to all of Florida's extreme humidity. It also showed signs

of being very hot because of trying to make the connection thru all of the corrosion. To add to our woes,

the breakers originally used in these mobile homes is not available thru local Lowe's or Home Depot. We

went from one electrical supplier to another for about 4 hours on a Saturday morning trying to find a

replacement item. These breakers are extremely hard to find.

Once the new breaker was properly installed my problem now seems to be solved. So if you have been

having any similar problems in your home you might consider having your main breakers inspected for

corrosion and just plain old age. The same goes for your switches and outlets. The mobile home

manufacturers use the cheapest materials available when constructing these homes PLEASE DO NOT

ATTEMPT ANY OF THIS TYPE OF REPAIR BY YOURSELF. ELECTRIAL PROBLEMS CAN BE VERY

DANGEROUS! PLEASE UTILIZE THE EXPERTISE & SKILLS OF A QUALIFIED ELECTICIAN.
