Park University is a third-year mem-ber in the American Midwest Confer-ence, joining in the 2009-10 school

year, rejoining the league after nine years of membership in the MCAC and as an NAIA Independent in basketball. Park previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. Park is one of nine AMC member insti-tutions, joining Columbia College, Hanni-bal-LaGrange College, Harris-Stowe State University, Missouri Baptist Univer-sity, Stephens College, William Woods University and Williams Baptist College as returning members. New in 2011-12, Benedictine University at Springfield joins the American Midwest Conference, re-placing McKendree University, which left at the end of the 2010-11 academic year. The AMC sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Mid-west Conference is to promote the posi-tive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to en-gage in athletic contests on an equal ba-sis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The American Midwest Con-ference also compiles a Presidents Cup, where schools earn points for conference finishes in all sports. McKendree captured the 2009-10 President’s Cup. Park fin-ished fourth in the 2009-10 standings.

The Park University men’s basket-ball program is beginning to sound like a broken record. Eight return-

ing veterans, all of whom are seniors, and a 2011-12 nonconference schedule that will leave the Pirates battle tested when play begins in the American Midwest Con-ference after the curtain is dropped on 2011 in early January. But dig a little deeper into the 2011-12 roster, and you’ll see a team with talent, faced with a learning curve, led by sev-enth-year head coach Jason Kline, who has already captured his 200th career vic-tory and his 100th win as Park’s sideline general. The Pirates return an experienced backcourt, including Melvin Gatson (Kan-sas City, Kan.) and Reco Anderson (Sum-ter, S.C.), who both came up big for the Pirates in the 2010-11 postseason, mov-ing Park through the American Midwest Conference tournament to qualify for the NAIA tournament in March. “We started slow last year. It takes a lot of time for our new guys to figure out our defensive concepts and how we lay the foundation on the defensive side,” Kline said. “But, we got rolling and then we hit a stall before we started playing re-ally good basketball with five or six games to go and that helped us earn our way into the national tournament. We have to teach our new guys the way we go about the season and we do that through the leadership that comes from our returners.” Anderson scored 11 points to lead the team to a come-from-behind land-slide win over Williams Baptist College in

the tournament quarterfinals, and against Columbia College, in the semifinal round, Gatson had all 13 of his points in the second half, leading the team to an-other comeback win to ad-vance. The Pirates went on to lead wire-to-wire at McKendree University in the tournament cham-pionship game, getting a career-high 25 from Anderson on the way to a 13-point win. “We have guys coming back with expe-rience,” Kline said. “Mel-vin played a lot last year as did Reco Anderson, who has been here for four years. Those guys played very well late in the season. Tyler Price gave us a lot of good minutes and he can shoot the basket-ball, and Juston Hairston played a lot of minutes as well. He’s a guy that can go inside and out-side.” Hairston averaged 10.9 points per game and added 6.1 rebounds, last season, and Price was the team’s leading 3-point shooter, drilling 49 long-range jumpers and averaging 6.5 points per game. Anderson averaged 9.4 points, for the Pirates, and Gatson scored 5.7 points per game. Park also returns a crop of veterans who played limited, but important, minutes

in 2010-11, all four of whom are se-niors and have experience in big

games. “We do have

some returners who didn’t play a lot of minutes, last year,” Kline said. “Guys like Wardell Sat-terwhite, Mark Halsell, Vince Langkamp and Cooper Bayi-ha, who have experience in

big, important games, and will

compete for an ex-panded role and bigger

minutes this year.” To fill the gaps left by last year’s eight-member senior class, including

honorable mention NAIA All-American

and leading scorer Kyle Rausch,

the Pirates will turn to a nine-m e m -b e r n e w -c o m -e r c lass

cludes five freshmen and four junior col-lege transfers. “We have a couple transfers with ex-perience in college basketball. Physically and mentally, those guys are more ready to compete, but we do have freshmen that have a chance and have talent,” Kline said. “It all hinges on how quickly those guys, including the junior college guys, grasp what we’re doing and pick things up. It’s important that they don’t play like robots, because we do put a lot in early. Once they feel comfortable, especially the freshmen, they’re very skilled and we’ll have them for a number of years.” Devin Barnes (Chandler, Ariz.) is one of the junior college transfers that could make an immediate impact, coming from Glendale Community College, as well as Ethan Sticken (Oak Grove, Mo.), who came from North Central Missouri Col-lege. Park could also get a spark from a pair of freshmen, including Garrett Sandbothe, a 6-foot-6 forward who played last season at Lee’s Summit West High School, and is the son of former Missouri Tiger Mike Sandbothe. Stedmon Lemon could also see time, standing at 6-foot-5, from Atlanta, Ga. Lemon can go inside and outside, according to Kline, and could provide depth as the 2011-12 season pro-gresses. The year starts with a long road trip, Oct. 29, when the Pirates travel to one of the most tradition-rich programs in NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball, tipping off at 3 p.m., in the season opener at George-town College in Georgetown, Ky. Park

also plays twice each against MidAmerica Nazarene University and Benedictine Col-lege, as well as nonconference games against Central Methodist University, Peru State College and Avila University out of the Heart of America Athletic Conference. One NCAA Division II foe sits on the 2011-12 schedule, when the Pirates play East Central University (Okla.) at the Rock U Classic over the Thanksgiving Holiday, and two more classics – at Peru State and at Midland – dot the schedule, putting Park up against Midland University, Bel-levue University, York College and Grace College in early season nonconference games. “Our nonconference schedule is as tough as it always is, to prepare us for the AMC (schedule),” Kline said. “We play six or seven HAAC teams and an NCAA Divi-sion II team, and that’s the way our sched-ule has looked for a long time. This year, we add Georgetown, and from a tradition standpoint in the NAIA, there’s nobody better than Georgetown College. They’ve been at the highest level of NAIA basket-ball for a long time, and that’s a tough opener. It doesn’t matter if you play them at home or on the road, they’re going to be tough, and we get them twice, home and away.” The AMC portion of the 2011-12 sea-son begins Jan. 6-7, at Williams Baptist College, where by AMC rules, the Pirates will play their final year of a three-year commitment with all road games at WBC. Jan. 6, Park and WBC play at 7:30 p.m., with a 4 p.m., tip scheduled for Jan. 7. Last season, WBC was one of four teams

to beat the Pirates in conference games, winning a two-point overtime game on the second day of two-straight games in Wal-nut Ridge, Ark. The Pirates play defending AMC co-champion Columbia College at the South-well Complex, Jan. 12, and Jan. 14, Park plays its first conference home game, a 4 p.m., tip against William Woods Univer-sity. Columbia returns to Parkville, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m., two days after the Pirates travel to Hannibal-LaGrange University, where Park fell by two points on HLG’s senior day in 2011. The Trojans travel to Park, in 2011-12, for the Pirates senior day, a 4 p.m., tips on Saturday, Feb. 25. “We don’t want this schedule to break us, but we want it to make us better in the nonconference to prepare us for our AMC schedule,” Kline said. The Pirates will play one tune-up, Oct. 15, before traveling to Georgetown, when Livin’ the Dream visits Breckon Sports Center for the team’s only exhibi-tion game of the 2011-12 season. Park and LTD tip off at 3 p.m. “Livin’ the Dream is good and ma-ture,” Kline said. “We might be in better shape, but their basketball knowledge makes up for that. I get to see different combinations on the floor, and then after that, we break things down to get ready for one of the toughest openers we’ve ever had. Certainly the toughest since I’ve been coaching at Park. The exhibition game is important with a lot of new faces so that we can see where we are with a couple of weeks before we roll out the ball for real.”

Jason Kline enters his seventh season as head men’s basketball coach at Park University with a 112-74 (.602) record

at Park, taking the Pirates to three NAIA na-tional tournaments in five seasons, includ-

ing both the 2010 and 2011 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championships. Last season, he took the Pirates to the first round of the NAIA tournament, winning the school’s first-ever American Mid-west Conference men’s basketball tournament championship, leading the team to a pair of road victories over nationally ranked teams in the semifinal and championship rounds. The Pirates opened the tournament with a come-from-be-hind win at home over Williams Baptist College, trailing at the half before coasting to a double-digit victory over the Eagles,

and the team came from behind again in the semifinals, claiming a two-point win on the road at No. 18 Columbia College. Park didn’t trail for the rest of the tournament, leading

wire-to-wire at McKendree University to claim the tourna-ment championship, earning the Pirates a spot downtown to

take on Mountain State University. At season’s end, the Pirates had an All-American, Kline’s 15th, when Kyle Rausch averaged 11 points and six rebounds on the way to honorable mention All-America status.

Rausch was also a Daktron-ics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete under

Kline’s watch, joining three other teammates – Mark Halsell, Vince Langkamp and Tyler Price – helping the Pirates finish with the NAIA’s second-most stu-dent-athletes earning the NAIA’s highest academic honor. Kline’s Pirates also had six academic all-con-

ference honorees and two

all-conference selections, Rausch and Gold-eng Deng. The American Midwest Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2009-10, Kline also claims a pair of NAIA Division I Indepen-dent Coach of the Year awards, one for his coaching job in the 2006-07 season when the Pirates also made a second round ap-pearance in the 2007 NAIA national tourna-ment. Kline coached his 14th NAIA All-American in 2009-10, as Herschel Rod-gers landed on the NAIA’s third team, marking the fourth-straight year with an All-American in a Park uniform under Kline’s watch. Kline’s players’ perfor-mance on the court is matched by their accolades in the classroom, including 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Jeremy Voorhees, who led a group of seven academic all-conference honorees. Park’s 2009-10 campaign was one of the most successful in its men’s basketball history, as the Pirates reached 23 wins to become the fourth team since the 1961-62 season to post at least 20 wins and advance to an NAIA national tournament. The season also marked the Pirates’ first back in the American Midwest Conference, and Kline promptly led the team to a second-place finish be-hind nationally ranked McKendree University, going 12-2 in the conference season. Seven of Park’s 10 losses in 2009-10 came to NAIA national tournament teams, including one in the tournament to Biola University, and two more were to NCAA Divi-

sion II programs. In 2008-09, Kline had the Pirates within a game of playing for the 2009 NAIA Division I Independent Tournament title, falling in the semifinals to Crichton at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C. The 2008-09 season also marked the second-straight 16-win campaign for the Pirates, who finished 16-14 with two Dak-tronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes and one All-American in Jon Meri-weather, who was named to the NAIA’s Second Team as well as the Preseason First Team distributed by Basketball Times. On Senior Day, the Pirates made it three-straight seasons with a win over crosstown rival Rockhurst University, drumming the Hawks 79-58. In all, Park beat two NCAA Division II opponents and took another to the wire, testing NCAA Division II power Southwest Baptist in late November. Park played 23 of its 30 games on the season against NCAA Division II and ranked NAIA opponents, posting eight wins over ranked NAIA opponents, including six wins over teams who ad-vanced to NAIA national tournaments. Kline posted 16 wins in the 2007-08 season, advancing to the semifinals of the 2008 NAIA Independent Region Tourna-ment in Orangeburg, S.C. Kline also coached an All-American who was named NAIA Player of the Week at Park for the second-straight year in 2007-08, as Meriweather earned three All-Ameri-ca distinctions as well as two national weekly honors in 2007-08. In 2006-07, Brandon Voorhees was named to the All-Amer-ica squad in addition to earning national player of the week hon-ors, also being named Basketball Times Co-Player of the Year at the close of the season. During the 2007-08 season, Meriweath-er earned his first All-America distinction, and Kline’s 2007-08 squad also produced three Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. The 2006-07 season marked one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in NAIA Men’s Basketball History, as the Pirates went from a 10-22 record in 2005-06 to an .813 winning percentage during the NAIA tournament run. In addition to the turnaround and tournament appearance, Park also recorded its first win over an NCAA Division I school under Kline’s watch – a 103-99 exhibition triumph over UMKC in November. Kline came to Park after seven successful seasons at Indi-ana Tech University in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he led the War-riors to a 140-84 record during his tenure. In 2004-05, he guided Indiana Tech to a school record 29 wins (eight losses) and the school’s second straight NAIA Division II National Tournament

appearance, advancing to the Elite Eight. Over his last three seasons at Indiana Tech, Kline’s teams averaged over 26 wins per year. In each of the last four seasons, his teams finished the regular season in the top 35 of the final NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball ratings, including a ranking of eighth in 2003-04 and 15th in 2004-05. Kline, who was named the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Ath-letic Conference) Coach of the Year in 2003-04, led Indiana Tech to a regular season conference title in 2003-04 and to the WHAC Tournament Championship in 2004-05. Individually, Kline’s players have accumulated a multitude of honors. Twenty-one student-athletes have been named NAIA Scholar-Athletes under Kline, while 15 have earned athletic All-America honors. Sixty-four players have been tabbed Academic All-Conference, along with 31 All-Conference performers. Kline, who has an overall coaching record of 252-158 (.615) over 13 seasons, started his coaching career as an assistant at Indiana Tech from 1993-95, where he earned his undergraduate degree in business administration in 1994. Kline then spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Kansas Wesleyan University, in Salina, Kan., which is where he completed his M.B.A. in 1998. He and his wife, Jolina, a former women’s basketball stu-dent-athlete at Kansas Wesleyan, have two sons, Jacob and Jackson.

Gordon Stubblefield is in his seventh season as an assistant men’s bas-ketball coach at Park University

after also playing a season for head coach Jason Kline at Indiana Tech.

Stubblefield played one season under current Park Head Coach Jason Kline at Indiana Tech University in 1998-99, earn-ing All-America honors. Not many would have called Park Uni-versity’s 2010-11 men’s basketball season history-in-the making in early

November. The Pirates were 2-4, reeling from neutral-court losses to Grand View and Okla-homa Wesleyan and road setbacks against nationally ranked NAIA Division I rivals William Jewell and Evangel. On Nov. 17, though, Park turned its season on its head and didn’t know it by beating Benedictine College 80-56 in the Pi-rates’ home opener at Breckon Sports Center. That win sparked a school-record 13-straight victories and a 16-2 record over the team’s next 18 games. Nov. 20, the winning streak continued with a redemption victory, a 92-77 win at home against William Jewell that offset the team’s 59-56 loss earlier in the month at the Mabee Center in Liberty. Two more wins followed, over MidAmerica Nazarene and Haskell, setting up a crucial battle of nationally ranked teams when Evangel returned the trip to Breckon Sports Center on Nov. 30. In that game, Park held ev-eryone around Evangel’s leading scorer silent, and the Pirates weathered the storm as Spud Harbour scored 17 points for the Crusaders. Goldeng Deng topped Harbour’s performance, though, hitting 6-of-12 from the floor and anoth-er five crucial foul shots, scoring 19 points and adding a team-leading eight rebounds to come away with a 63-59 win, redeeming the team’s six-point, double-overtime loss to the Crusad-ers earlier in the month in Springfield. The streak would continue all the way through February, when the Pirates blasted Missouri Baptist University at Breckon Sports Center, 91-64, for a 13th-consecutive victory. In the streak, head coach Jason Kline picked up his 100th victory on Park’s sideline when the team won at Missouri Baptist in January, 83-66, and the streak also included the team’s season-sweeping win over MidAmerica Naza-rene, marking the first time a Park program un-

der Kline’s direction defeated MNU twice in a single season. The streak began with seven-straight con-ference wins, including a record-clinching 71-60 victory at McKendree University, and ended with an AMC loss, when the Pirates were un-able to fight from behind to beat Columbia Col-lege at the Southwell Complex. The Cougars came away with a 67-65 win, but it would be the only win the Cougars would get on the Pirates during the 2010-11 season. Park had defeated Columbia in January, 47-43, mark-ing the lowest-ever game-winning point total for a Park men’s basketball team, and later in the year, Park had its second-lowest winning performance in a 49-41 win at Harris-Stowe State University. The Harris-Stowe game was part of a slight rough patch for the Pirates, who needed overtime to beat William Woods Uni-versity at Breckon Sports Center, 74-73, a team Park had beaten by 14 earlier in the conference schedule in Fulton, Mo. The rough stretch began after a 26-point win at Williams Baptist College on Friday, Feb. 11, which was immediately followed by a Sat-urday, Feb. 12 game at WBC that the Eagles were able to win in overtime, 72-70. A week later, Hannibal-LaGrange stunned a still-ranked Park squad on the Trojans’ senior day, 75-73, and again, seven days later, the Pirates were dealt a third-straight Saturday loss when McK-endree locked up the No. 1 seed in the AMC tournament with a 69-68 win at Breckon Sports Center. Park’s season looked to be in jeopardy during the first half of its quarterfinal matchup against Williams Baptist at Breckon Sports Center, but a 27-3 run to begin the second half set up Park’s furious run to the NAIA tourna-ment. Park outscored WBC 43-24 in the sec-ond half of the AMC quarterfinals to win 66-51, and the team found itself down again a couple days later, trailing in the semifinal round at Co-

lumbia, 35-25. A second-half run would again keep the year alive, as Park outscored Colum-bia 35-21 in the second half at the Southwell Complex, dealing the Cougars their fifth loss of the year and setting up an AMC tournament championship game at McKendree on March 8 in Lebanon, Ill. Park didn’t waste any time in its champion-ship-game win, allowing McKendree to take its only lead of the game 40 seconds in when Eric Hobbie, the AMC player of the year, knocked down a 3-point basket that was answered by a 12-2 run over the next five minutes, setting the Pirates up for a 38-24 halftime lead and a 72-59 tournament-championship win. The 2010-11 run came to an end eight days later in the first round of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship when Mountain State University got its run to the championship game going by beating the Pirates 83-58. At 2-4 through its first six games, no one saw school history coming for the 2010-11 Pirates. It was the first time for the Park men’s basketball program in back-to-back NAIA tournaments, and it also marked the program’s first ever back-to-back 20-win sea-sons, as Park finished 21-9 in 2010-11 after go-ing 23-10 in 2009-10.

RAUSCH HEADLINES PARK’S POSTSEASON HONOREES Park University had two seniors on the Park University men’s basketball team – Deng and Rausch – who were named to the 2010-11 AMC Men’s Basketball All-Conference First-Team. In addition to his first-team all-confer-ence designation, Rausch was also Park’s sixth NAIA All-American in the last five seasons, earning Honorable Mention NAIA All-America honors. He was also one of six players hon-ored for academic performance by the league, joined by fellow seniors Philip Garnett and Der-rick Howard. Three juniors also made the list;

Tyler Price, Vince Langkamp and Mark Halsell. Rausch, a two-year letterwinner for the Pirates, was also an honorable-mention All-American, and a Capital One Academic All-District Third-Team award winner by the Col-lege Sports Information Directors of America, becoming the first player in Park’s history to be named to the Capital One Academic All-District squad. A 6-foot-10 center from Blue Springs, Rausch was also named to the Daktronics-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Scholar-Ath-lete team, making him one of just two players in Park’s history to earn both scholar-athlete and All-America honors in the same season. Brandon Voorhees, who led the Pirates to the 2007 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Bas-ketball National Championship tournament, was Park’s first duel honoree, earning scholar-athlete honors in addition to his selection to the First-Team All-America squad. Rausch was one of the American Midwest Conference’s top shot blockers with 56, aver-aging nearly two per game to rank in the NAIA’s top 15. Park’s leading scorer at 10.9 points per game, Rausch was also the Pirates’ leading rebounder, averaging 6.1 boards per game. Rausch played in 29 of Park’s 30 games, start-ing in all 29. He also finished the year with 34 steals and shot 80.5-percent at the free-throw line. He finished the year with five double-doubles and 17 double-figure scoring games, including a career-high 25 points against Bene-dictine College, helping the Pirates to a two-point road win by hitting 13-of-15 from the foul line. Deng, a 6-foot-2 senior guard from Stone Mountain, Ga., was the team’s second-leading scorer at 10.2 points per game, and in the American Midwest Conference men’s bas-ketball tournament championship game, he scored seven points, but his biggest contribu-tion was on the glass, where he grabbed six

rebounds. He also hit a big three from the top of the key in the first half of the championship win over McKendree, helping Park take a 38-24 lead into the break on the way to a 72-59 win. Deng was one of Park’s top defenders during the regular season, collecting 55 steals on the year, including a career-high nine in a nonconference game against Haskell Indian Nations University in November that still stands as NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball’s top indi-vidual single-game steals performance of the 2010-11 season. His top scoring night of the season came at MidAmerica Nazarene University, where he scored 19 points to lead Park to a 73-61 win, and on Jan. 29, he led Park to a school-record 12th-straight win with 17 points, beating McK-endree by 11 on its home floor in Lebanon. Deng finished the year with 16 double-digit scoring games, playing and starting in all 30 games for the Pirates in 2010-11. Rausch and Deng were each a part of the first-ever senior class to lead Park University to back-to-back Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championships, helping Park reach the tournament in 2010 by averaging nine points and 6.3 rebounds in 19 games, starting in 14. Last year, Rausch scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Park’s 83-75 first-round win over Georgetown College (Ky.), and in the second round, he had six re-bounds against Biola University (Calif.).

SENIOR-CLASS NOTES In addition to Rausch and Deng, six other seniors - Travis Fairley, Philip Garnett, Rudy Harper, Derrick Howard, Eduardo Quintero and Jordan White - brought their careers to a close March 16 in the first round of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Na-tional Championship. Fairley, took on a starting role late in the season for the Pirates, logging time in all 30

games with the final six starts of the season, averaging nearly 17 minutes and five points per game. He had five double-digit scoring games on the year, including 10 points in the team’s AMC semifinal win over Columbia and 15 points in Park’s overtime loss at Williams Baptist. Garnett was Park’s first-ever Pattison Family Champions of Character scholar in the Pirates 2009-10 tournament run, and in 2010-11, he appeared in all 30 games as the team’s backup point guard, dishing out 41 assists on the year and hitting 17 baskets from above the 3-point arc, helping his 3.9 points-per-game scoring average. Harper played in 11 games for the Pirates and totaled seven points and 11 rebounds, while Howard earned 30 starts on the year, becoming the first player since Michael Zim-merman in 2008-09 to reach 100 assists in a single season, passing out 114. Howard aver-aged 6.2 points per game and was also one of the NAIA’s leaders in steals, swiping 76 to help Park turn opponents over 608 times in 2010-11. Quintero was a starter for much of the season for the Pirates, playing in all 30 games with 25 starts, leading the team in scoring three times early in the year. One of his big-gest games on the glass came in an early sea-son loss to an NAIA tournament team when he grabbed 14 boards against Evangel University, and he led Park to a 92-77 win over another tournament team, Northland rival William Jew-ell, by scoring 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds. White rounded out the senior class, earn-ing time in 11 games, grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring three points.

corded a record number of Daktronics-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athletes – Halsell, Langkamp, Price and Rausch – who each earned the honor for the first time in their Park University men’s basketball careers. In all, 59 student-athletes were honored by the NAIA, with a nation-leading five from Westminster University in Utah. Park, with its four designations, had the second-most among all NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball programs. To be considered for the honor, student-ath-letes must be nominated by the program’s head coach and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status. Previ-ously, Park had three student-athletes achieve Scholar-Athlete status, in 2008, and in all, in-cluding the 2010-11 season, the Pirates have had 18 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the varsity program’s 49-season history. Price (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont HS) headlined Park’s list of three juniors to earn the NAIA’s highest honor after averaging 6.5 points per game and hitting 49 of Park’s 161 baskets from above the 3-point arc. Price had seven double-figure scoring games, including a career-high 25 points in an overtime loss at Evangel University, and a 15-point outing to beat Williams Baptist College in conference play. In the win over Evan-gel, he hit seven 3-point baskets, and against WBC, he dropped in five from outside the arc.Halsell, a ju-nior from St. Charles, Mo., is in his sec-ond year with the program

after transferring from the University of Ken-tucky. In 2010-11, he played in 11 games, scor-ing three points by knocking down three free throws against Haskell Indian Nations Univer-sity on Nov. 26, and on Jan. 6, at Missouri Bap-tist University, he scored another three points, hitting a field goal and a free throw. Langkamp (Independence, Mo./Fort Osage HS), played in 10 games and aver-aged 1.1 points, hitting his first career 3-point basket in Park’s 80-56 win over Benedictine at Breckon Sports Center on Nov. 17. He also hit two field goals and scored five points in Park’s 91-64 win at home over Missouri Baptist in Feb-ruary.

LOOKING FORWARD In addition to Park’s three juniors that were Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, five more are expected to return to the 2011-12

roster as seniors, marking the second-straight year and the third in the last

four that Coach Kline’s Pirates will have eight or more seniors on the roster. Melvin Gatson was one of Park’s key contribu-tors, playing in all 30 games

with time at both the point- and shooting-guard positions. His

most crucial performance came against Columbia College in

the American Midwest Conference Tourna-

ment, when he hit three from beyond the 3-point arc in the final 10 minutes, end-

ing the game with 13

points. He matched

his ca-

reer-high with 14 points in the AMC tournament championship at McKendree, and on the year, he finished with six double-digit scoring games, including another 14-point game in Park’s 73-61 win at MidAmerica Nazarene. Gatson aver-aged 5.7 points per game and finished the year with 50 assists. Reco Anderson also had a big finish to the season after sitting out the first six games with injury, including a heroic 25-point perfor-mance in the AMC tournament championship win at McKendree. Anderson led the team in scoring five times, all against conference oppo-nents, including 20 points in the team’s 74-60 win at William Woods. He also led the team in rebounding twice, including five boards in the team’s national-tournament loss to Mountain State. Anderson, a three-year letterwinner, av-eraged 9.4 points per game and hit 18 of his 74 made baskets from outside the 3-point arc. Wardell Satterwhite played in 15 games with three double-digit scoring outings, includ-ing big outings in the season’s first two games. He had 12 points in Park’s 99-73 win at Peru State College and against Grand View Univer-sity, he finished with 10. His performance was also crucial in the team’s one-point, overtime win over William Woods, helping the team to a 74-73 victory by scoring 10 points. Satter-white averaged five points per game and hit 11 threes. Juston Hairston averaged 5.8 points and nearly three rebounds per game, seeing ac-tion in 28 games, playing nearly 16 minutes per game. Hairston had six double-digit scoring games, including 20 points in the team’s five-point, 74-69 win over MidAmerica Nazarene on Nov. 20. Hairston had 11 points and six re-bounds in Park’s 66-57 win over Harris-Stowe, and he also had a successful season outside the arc, hitting 11 of his 30 attempts from the 3-point line. Cooper Bayiha, a 6-foot-7 center, will also return for his senior season after playing in sev-en games, scoring seven points.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas

City area home, offering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small col-lege athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the Uni-versity and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown dis-trict, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east, gives Park University students multiple entertainment opportu-nities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland area of metropolitan Kansas City, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally re-ferred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Platte and Clay counties, in-cluding the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Gladstone, Liberty and North Kansas City. Kansas City is situated at the conflu-ence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the border between the two states.

The Kansas City Metropolitan Statis-tical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts multiple NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year, in-cluding two Sprint Cup Series event in the spring and fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World TeamTennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits historic Mu-

nicipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2011, Park University made its third appearance in five sea-sons, and its fifth overall, in the national tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics moved its offices downtown in 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shop-ping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic.

Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Leawood Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas City, Kan., keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

BEST VALUE, NATIONWIDEPark continues to increase access to higher education by offering the quality undergraduate and graduate degrees stu-dents desire at locations, times and deliv-ery formats that best serve their needs. In 2010, the University was ranked as the No. 1 value among private colleges and universities by Parents & Colleges, an on-line resource for parents of college-bound students. According to Parents & Colleges, in-stitutions included on this list offer a diver-sity of degrees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and

report the highest SAT or ACT scores for the incom-ing class. Park was cited as offering “both proximity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town… the stu-dent body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a frac-tion of other private insti-tutions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”

FOUNDEDFounded in 1875 in Parkville, Mo., Park University has devel-oped into a comprehensive, independent institution that is a national leader in high-er education. In 2000, Park achieved uni-versity status and now serves more than 24,000 students annually at 40 campus centers in 21 states and online. Serving an ethnically diverse student population and non-traditional adult learn-ers has, for many years, been central to Park’s educational mission. Even in its first year, Park University enrolled women stu-dents as well as men, something that was unusual at the time; and two of the original 17 students were Native Americans. Park was also an early integrator when it wel-comed African-American students to live in Park’s residence halls in the 1950s.

PRESENTProviding such access has developed considerable diversity among the student population, with more than 650 interna-tional students from 110 countries, and a 42 percent student representation from racial, ethnic and cultural groups typi-cally underrepresented in colleges and universities. The University has repeat-edly been recognized as one of the top 100 American colleges/universities in the nation graduating Hispanic, Afri-can-American and American-Indian students. In addition, extracurricu-lar activities and championship-caliber athletic programs comple-ment Park’s outstanding scholastic programs. Park offers numerous degree programs online, and it maintains a long-standing relationship with the U.S. military for which it has been recognized as one of the larg-est providers of online under-graduate education to military learners worldwide. Park has re-

ceived international recognition by Military Advanced Education magazine as one of its “Top 20 Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities,” citing Park’s “innovative ac-ademic degree programs steeped in ex-cellence.”

LOCATIONThe flagship campus of Park University is located on a historic site in Parkville, Mo., situated on a bluff above the scenic Mis-souri River. The Parkville Campus is 10 minutes from downtown Kansas City, 15 minutes from Kansas City International Airport, and is part of the KCI Business Corridor. In addition, Park Distance Learn-ing has established campus centers on military installations across the U.S. and online. Park’s School of Graduate and Pro-fessional Studies is located at our down-town Kansas City, Mo., Campus Center. Park also serves the Kansas City metro-politan area with campuses in Indepen-dence and Lexington, Mo. In addition to our military campus centers throughout the country, Park also has a campus in

Austin, Texas.

January of 1996. Throughout English’s 15-year ten-ure as Director of Athletics, Park Univer-sity has steadily improved its athletics facilities, enhancing an already first-rate student-athlete experience. The 2011-12 academic year will add to the list of facil-ity improvements under English’s watch, when the Park University cross country and track and field squads will begin the season with a new track adjacent to Julian Field, a 1,500-seat soccer stadium also built under English’s watch in 2001. Breckon Sports Center, home to Park’s volleyball and basketball programs, as well as the baseball and softball com-plexes, have continued to see playing-surface and aesthetic upgrades in Eng-lish’s 15 years as Athletics Director. In 2010-11, English was honored for his service as an athletics administra-tor by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLen-don Minority Scholarship Foundation. Later in the 2010-11 academic year, he added a second hall-of-fame induc-tion, earning a spot in the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame in his home town of Columbia, Ga. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 cam-paign. For his final 10 sea-sons at the helm of the Park

men’s basketball program, Eng-lish also assumed the duties of Director of Athletics, a position he will continue into his 15th year in the 2011-12 academic year. English is the winningest coach in Park Uni-versity men’s basketball his-tory, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s bas-ketball coach at his alma mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Kri-gel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team rec-ognized as most sports-manlike at the tourney. After a stellar

collegiate playing career for Christian Col-lege in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blaz-ers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Bas-ketball Association for the Hartford Capi-tals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the East-ern Basketball Association Championship

with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 50 conference

championships, and in each of his 15 previous seasons as athletics di-

rector, at least one Park pro-gram has advanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 86 stu-dent-athletes have been named NAIA All-Amer-icans, includ-ing a track and field national champion in the

NAIA marathon, and 179 student-

athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Schol-

ar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park Uni-versity’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates

earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better. In 2010-11, Park narrowly missed its school record for scholar teams, landing six on the list, in-cluding first-time honorees as the baseball and men’s basketball teams achieved better than 3.0 team GPAs.

The home of Park University’s volley-ball and basketball

programs is the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Center, lo-cated on the north side of the University’s Parkville Campus. Named for former Park University president Dr. Donald J. Breckon and comprised of two concrete, monolithic domes, Breckon Sports Center is home to Park University’s men’s and women’s vol-leyball contests, as well as men’s and women’s basket-ball contests, in its West Dome, while the East Dome serves as a practice facility for both volleyball programs as well as baseball, softball and soccer if weather forces the Pirates inside. The East Dome’s floor surface is a sport-court material marked for volleyball, while the West Dome is marked for both volleyball and basketball and includes seating for more than 1,000 specta-tors. In 2008 and 2009, the arena hosted the NAIA Men’s Volley-ball National Invitational Tournament, and in 2010-11, Breckon Sports Center was home to two of collegiate athletics’ top female program turnarounds, when the women’s volleyball and women’s basketball teams combined for 37 wins after winning 12 between the two programs in 2009-10. Park’s men’s basketball and men’s volleyball programs also had a homecourt advantage, each ad-vancing to NAIA posteseason play, the second-straight appear-ance for the men’s basketball program.

Breckon Sports Center also hosted a nationally televised event in 2010, when the Col-lege Fanz Game of the Week traveled to Parkville on Jan. 30 for the basketball games between Park and McKend-ree. In addition to serving as home to four Park athletic programs, Breckon Sports Center also houses the ad-ministrative offices for Park University athletics, including office space for administra-tive staff and both volleyball and basketball programs.
