Message from the MaestroMetamorphosis means change. It usually refers to insects, but it can apply to music and orchestras as well. And to quote Bob Dylan, “the times they

are a changin.”

We open with the genius of Beethoven’s art, both high and low. Beethoven shattered the chrysalis of the 18th century classical symphony

when he wrote the heroic Third Symphony. We’re expanding Beethoven’s musical evocation of the struggle between Napoleon and Wellington, called “Wellington’s Victory” with the addition of soldiers, flags and

drums of the Fifth Connecticut Regiment, which will reenact the battle on stage.

Here in Connecticut, our four seasons of the year unfold gradually, but taveling to the southern hemisphere provides dramatic contrast since

seasons are exactly opposite. In November we’re presenting two views of the seasons: one 400 years old from Venice, and one 14 years old from

“down south” in Buenos Aires.

Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s tale of the transformational power of love has inspired numerous composers. Around Valentine’s Day, and with the

help of “Shakesperience,” we will be bringing you Shakespeare’s immortal words set to music by Berlioz, Bernstein and Tchaikovsky.

Frank Sinatra went through quite a metamorphosis, from a skinny kid from Hoboken to the “Chairman of the Board.” In March, Rob Zappulla

will be singing Frank’s big band hits and 70’s ballads.

In May we perform Paul Hindemith’s rip-roaring transformation of a few harmless little ditties by Carl Maria von Weber into a symphonic SUV

called “Symphonic Metamorphosis.” And with the help of a dozen iPads manned by students from Seymour High School you’ll see/hear/experience

a new work by Connecticut composer Doug O’Grady. Now that’s a Metamorphosis!
