A wooden fort, which appeared in 1618 on the Tom River, became one of the most important supporting posts of the Russian Empire beyond the Urals. Gradually the settlements began to grow around the fortress, and the post of resistance became the town, which since 1622 acquired the name of Kuznetsk.

Also at that time Kuznetsk was awarded the coat of arms with the wolf - symbol of freedom and wastelands. Kuznetsk continued to carry out the functions of fore post – it protected the territory from the invasion of Jungarian and Kyrgyz hordes.

Kuznetsk, a city built manually from wood, with the five towers, became the center of a vast territory. But it has not got significant development until 1930.

New legendary history of the city began along with the building of the railway to Kuznetsk in 1914 and decision to build Kuznetsk (at that time Telbessky) steel works, made by Russian Government in 1927. In 1930 the first blast furnace foundation was made. At the same time the first stone block of flats was carried out according to the design of an outstanding German architect Ernst Mai.

Kuznetsk fort was first

erected on the left bank

of the Kondoma River, but

there were the trenches up

the stream above the present fortress,

and later it was built on the present

place.

army of soldiers and officers, convicts

and exiled.

The history of Novokuznetsk is really interesting. In spring of 1618 Russian explorers reached the upper reaches of the river Tom and founded Kuznetsk stockade town. In 1797 the erection of unique Kuznetsk Fortress, which walls still beautify the “old” town and attract tourists, was started.

My City

What is it? It`s not easy to answer. And everyone will answer in different ways.

Some of us suppose it is a place, where a lot of people live and work. Others will

say: “The city is a fairytale, where every dream becomes true”. And may be

somebody rudely tells us, that “the city is a prison, which never lets you go

away”.

Really, I don`t know what to say about it. The city can make you happy, it`s true,

but it can take away everything you have.

I like the city, I can not live without it, it`s like a drug, and like an every addict,

I`m afraid of it. It deceives you, you believe it, losing your mind. There are a lot

of amusements, but don`t trust them, because you should remember, that the

“stone jungle” is for beasts… not for us.

An old coat of arms was accepted by the decision of City Council in 1809. It is a heraldic shield divided into two equal parts. In the upper part there is a silver horse with golden eyes in the green background. The lower part is of golden color. A red-white smithy (a furnace and fire is red) with its tools is pictured on it.

A new coat of arms of Novokuznetsk was accepted on the 8th of July in 1970. The author of this variant is an architect Vipov A.B.

It is also a heraldic shield of white color that is meant to symbolize Siberian nature. On it we can see a red blast-furnace and black square which symbolize metal and coal industries of our city. The black square emits rays of lights that show the sun energy contained in coal and given to people.

In upper part there is a graphic design of the walls of ancient Kuznetsk fortress as a memory of great historic past and heritage of the region, the symbol connecting old and new generations.

2010) thousand people. There are

23 industrial works in the city.

Novokuznetsk the city of metal workers, coal miners and builders began to grow together with the Kuznetsk iron and steel works. Metallurgical and coal mining industries are highly developed in Novokuznetsk. Kuzbass is famous not only for metal but also for coal of high quality. 7 mines are situated on the territory of Novokuznetsk. In a historically short period of time it has become one of the largest industrial, scientific and cultural centers of Siberia. There is a fine Drama theatre, a lot of libraries and cinemas, Palaces of culture, a Puppet show and some museums, for example, the City Art Museum, Local Lore museum, a new musical production centre “Seventh Morning”, a circus, some drama studios.

“Novokuznetsk” Railway station

Large chemical and pharmaceutical enterprise is JSC “Organica”, which exports its production abroad. Cement works, enterprises of construction industry and machine-building and many others are also operating in Novokuznetsk.Industry concentration gave rise to the serious ecological problems, which solution demands big investments. Novokuznetsk needs the program of technical assistance, directed to the improvement of ecological situation in the city and modern technological solutions of ecological problems. Industry reconstruction, establishing new ecologically clean productions, purification of drinking water, solution of the problem of boiler – rooms and transport exhausts, all these will help to change the ecological situation in Novokuznetsk for the best.

Of the well-known places of interest it is worth mentioning the monument to Bardin, who was a chief engineer of Kuznetskstroy and technical director of the Kuznetsk metallurgical works, the memorial complex in Victory square with the tank made in the years of war from Kuznetsk steel, the House of Dostoyevsky, Kuznetsk fortress and the boulevard of Heroes. Novokuznetsk is a city that has 3 higher schools: Siberian State Industrial University, the branch of the State Kemerovo University and the Kuzbass Pedagogical Academy. It has research institutions. Our scientists are a great technological and scientific potential not only of Siberia, but also all over the country. There are more than a hundred secondary schools and a number of technical and vocational schools in the city.

Novokuznetsk is a very large city. There are 6 districts in the city today: Centralny, Zavodsky, Ordzhonikidzevsky, Kuznetsky, Ilyinsky and Kuibyshevsky, which are constantly changing. Lots of people live in those districts and most of them like Novokuznetsk very much.

-Heroe Boulevard- is the sacred place of the city. This is memorial in honor of all the soldiers of the war 1941-1945. It consists of the place of Glory with its eternal flame, place of meetings, memorial column in the honor of the 25 years of Victory, memorial wall 90 meters length decorated with relief and the boulevard full of verdure.
