A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE WORK OF ROGER STEVENSON, M.D., UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS AS DIRECTOR OF THE GREENWOOD GENETIC CENTER.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that after thirty-seven years of ground-breaking work in the area of genetic research at the world-renown Greenwood Genetic Center, Dr. Roger Stevenson will begin his retirement at a reception to honor him on February 4, 2011; and

Whereas, after earning a bachelor’s degree from Furman University, Roger Stevenson graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship training at North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital; and

Whereas; he served on the faculty at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston before joining the Greenwood Genetic Center; and

Whereas, devoting his professional career to the study of birth defects and developmental impairments, Dr. Stevenson has contributed broadly to the literature on the genetic and environmental causes of these disabilities; and

Whereas, he authored two editions of the textbook, The Fetus and Newly Born Infant, Influences of the Prenatal Environment; produced two editions of Human Malformations and Related Anomalies with Dr. Judith Hall; and with his colleagues, Charles Schwartz, Ph.D., and Richard Schroer, M.D., authored X-Linked

Mental Retardation, which included an atlas of XMLR syndromes; and

Whereas, since 1974, Dr. Stevenson has been the director of the Greenwood Genetic Center, which provides expertise in the human genetics of intellectual disabilities, autism, birth defects, and related disorders; and

Whereas, the Greenwood Genetic Center’s faculty conducts educational programs for medical professionals, graduate and undergraduate students, and the community at large in addition to its clinical, diagnostic, research, and treatment divisions; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the impact of the sustained work that Dr. Roger Stevenson has directed at the Greenwood Genetic Center for almost forty years and wish him continued success and happiness in his much-deserved retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the work of Roger Stevenson, M.D., upon the occasion of his retirement after thirty-seven years as director of the Greenwood Genetic Center.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Roger Stevenson.
