Ivy Butterworth Retires

40 historical years at Derby

From the Head of SchoolAndrea Archer

The long, quiet days of summer allow time to look back on the year and to reflect on the moments that will define it in years to come. In a school that is over 200 years old it is both rewarding and challenging to try to create new and interesting opportunities that move the school forward in meaningful ways. It is a credit to the faculty, administration, parents and students that engaging programs and events make each year fresh and unique.

Highlights of this year will differ for each of us but for me include the poise with which the students accepted a check from Mark Wahlberg for $30,000 to support financial aid efforts, the delight of students as they read their messages on the tree ornaments to benefit Children’s Hospital, the spectacle of tiny skaters weaving around Mr. Mleskco at the family skate, the enthralled faces of grandparents and grand-friends as they participated in class activities, the laughter on the tennis court at the Derby Golf & Tennis Tournament, and the tears of joy and appreciation as we bid farewell to beloved colleague, Ivy Butterworth, and the Class of 2012 on Derby Day.

While we place student learning at the forefront at Derby we are equally inspired and sustained by the accumulation of the little things that make a big difference to daily life on campus. Children here are happy to learn in part because their program is enriched; they can use technology creatively, spend time out of doors learning about nature, experience great authors first hand, view inspiring art during field trips and produce their own masterpieces in class. Learning comes alive when resources are plentiful and varied because parents and faculty work together to provide an environment that is stimulating and intellectually vibrant.

Your gifts to the Annual Fund, involvement in class projects and support of the Parent Association and special events has made it possible for us to provide generous resources to teachers and to offer students the highest quality education possible. On behalf of the entire Derby community thank you. Derby Academy would not be the school it is today without your generous support.

Derby Academy 2011-2012 Review 7

CARL: What were some of the factors that led you to make a career in teaching?

IVY: I was interested in teaching at a young age. I remember being a 10-year-old child growing up in the Washington, DC area and lining up all the neighborhood kids in order to organize Spelling Bees. I was playing the role of teacher to kids my own age which felt comfortable. Both my parents were teachers; I'm sure that played a part in shaping my decision. In fact, my husband Rick taught math full-time at Massasoit Community College for 42 years and so my daughter, Heidi '95, and son, Todd '97, grew up in a house of teachers much the same as I did. Perhaps not so surprisingly, both became teachers themselves – math, not history! Apparently, my children witnessed firsthand the pleasure both my husband and I derived from teaching.

CARL: You earned a B.A. in History and German from Vanderbilt along with your teaching certification and Master's Degree in History from UNC – Chapel Hill. What stands out most prevalently in your memories of those years?

IVY: The history professors at UNC were amazing teachers who instilled in me a genuine appreciation for the depth of the subject matter. My focus of study was on European and Russian history and I was particularly drawn to social history, that is—its human side, the story of history. This is what I have emphasized in my own teaching over the years.

CARL: Are there any particular comments from students during your long tenure at Derby that you will never forget?

IVY: A couple of what I would term 'notable quotables' come to mind. A student once asked me: "Who was your favorite president when you were alive?" I responded, "You mean I died and went to heaven or am I in the other place?" Another time, I was describing to one of my Derby classes how during the Cuban Missile Crisis my fellow classmates and I would be

forced to take cover on occasion by hiding underneath our school desks. One student responded with the following question: "You mean you were alive when something happened in history?!!"

CARL: What are your plans for life after Derby?

IVY: I will start by throwing away my alarm clock. I plan to travel with my husband, who retired in June, 2011. Some places I have yet to visit that

Honoring 40 years at DerbyIvy Butterworth retired last June after serving 40 years on the faculty of Derby Academy. In that time span she donned many hats, some of which include: Grade 7 European history teacher; Grade 8 World Cultures teacher (Russia, China, Japan, "Facing History and Ourselves"); History Department Head; World Awareness Group Advisor; and Derby's "Good News Lady," leading the Sunshine Fund. She has made the discipline of history accessible, absorbing, meaningful and inspiring to hundreds of Derby graduates who developed their study skills and critical thinking skills in her classroom and became forever touched by the wisdom she imparted. Two of those students, Peter Condrick '90 and Peter Newby '98, subsequently became colleagues of Mrs. Butterworth on the Derby faculty. She would not allow her passion for teaching and her knowledge-base of history to become stale, continually replenishing herself with professional courses and programs of study as well as with extensive summertime travel to such areas of the world as Russia, Japan, Egypt, England, Italy, Peru and Costa Rica. In a recent conversation with former Derby faculty member Carl Schwaber, Ivy shared some reflections on four decades of teaching at Derby:

An Interview with Mrs. Ivy Butterworth

8Derby Academy 2011-2012 Review

Conversations with Ivy are always stimulating because of her sharp intelligence, her vast store of knowledge about a wide variety of topics, her great sense of humor and

her unique perspective on life. I am also drawn to her caring, sensitive and supportive spirit. Ivy inspires me to be a better person. I treasure my time with my favorite walking partner! - Thalia McMillion, Auxiliary Programs Director

Ivy has been a creative force for our holiday programs. When we produced the traditional Christmas pageants, she personally directed everything to do with the nativity scenes. It was beautiful to behold and truly memorable for many generations of Derby students and their families. When we moved to the multicultural seasonal celebrations that represent our 21st Century society, she has sung with the students, played the violin with the band, and after the show always rolled up her sleeves to help with the clean-up.-- Alice McWilliams, Curriculum Coordinator and Arts Dept. Head

I met Ivy Butterworth on the very first day I was hired at Derby, in late May of 1978, when I visited the campus to see Derby in action. The students sat with their desks in a circle as Ivy led them in a serious discussion about Marx, Lenin, and the rise of communism in Russia. This was pretty heady stuff for a group of 8th graders just a week away from the end of school. I was immediately impressed not only with the students' thoughtful and articulate comments, but also by how their teacher kept prodding them gently to formulate more precise ideas, to provide greater supporting details for their assertions, and to think more deeply about what they were studying and what relevance it might have for them in their own lives. This was serious learning and serious teaching. I knew from day one what a master teacher Ivy was.

-Rev. Michael Connelly, World Languages Dept. Head, English Dept. Head

Honoring Ivy Butterworth - 40 years at Derby Academy, cont.interest me include Hawaii, Alaska and Israel. I want to spend more time with friends and family. My son, Todd, and his wife recently moved from Wisconsin to Danvers, MA, so that their one-year old daughter could live in close proximity to both sets of grandparents. I want to take courses in history, art and music. Of course, I will continue to play violin in the Quincy Symphony Orchestra.

CARL: What was it that kept you here at this school for so long, sustained you personally, invigorated you professionally? To put it another way: what will you miss most about Derby?

IVY: The opportunity to work with eager, funny, academically-oriented students is something I never took for granted here and will always cherish. As well, I will always be grateful for my having been surrounded by colleagues who, as well as being dedicated professionals, are warm, caring human beings who from the start embraced me as a member of the community and never let me forget that I was a

part of it. They provided both my children with an excellent formative education accompanied by personal care and attention. And they showed up in force to support me—in both tangible and non-tangible ways—during times of sadness, as when my mother died of congestive heart failure in 2002, and times of joy, as when my first grandchild was born in 2011.

CARL: In what ways did you change as a teacher over the years? What do you know now that you did not know when you began working here?

IVY: I became more student-oriented in my teaching style over time and more relaxed as far as the atmosphere I created and maintained in my classroom. I learned to be much more involved with my students and to genuinely share their joys and concerns. I did not know when I began teaching here in 1972 how much I would come to love teaching seventh and eight graders. I have had some wonderful classes over the years.

Honoring Ivy Butterworth - Tributes from former colleagues and students

Derby Academy 2011-2012 Review 9

She is a remarkable woman with a strong and active faith, with sound musical ability, and with a host of students—men and women—who are the luckiest bunch in the world to be able to call her 'friend.' I was thinking about Elvira the other day and about how to use prepositions. She was one to teach the students how to think inside the box, outside the box, over the box, under the box, around the box, through the box--there was no boxing Ivy or her students in! -- Connie Chapin, former English Dept. Head/ Middle School Coordinator

Ivy took her teaching very seriously and worked hard at it. She was known to be a tough but fair grader who returned quizzes, papers and tests promptly—and always with suggestions as to how to improve. She taught her students how to think their way through a history course, not just to regurgitate information. Year after year alums would return to Derby to thank Ivy for their excellent preparation for secondary school: outlining, writing the essay, preparing for tests and taking notes in class.- Jay Sadlon, Former Assistant Head of School and Director of Admission

Ivy Butterworth is the best teacher I ever had. In her classes, history became real and exciting. I still remember the assignments: write a letter home as a soldier in the trenches in France during WWI; create a fictional country and decide how it will be governed; compose a ballad that tells the story of a hero. She really cared about her students and encouraged us to think critically about history and mid-1980's current events—the nuclear arms race, the Chernobyl disaster, the thaw in US-Soviet relations, the famine in Africa, the explosion of Space Shuttle Challenger—events now part of history. In the days before the internet, iPhone, YouTube and SMART Board, she helped connect her students to the world and to the past. Thank you, Ivy, for all you have done for Derby and for your students. I will always think of the small white building next to the driveway as your classroom, where history came to life.-- Elizabeth Tobey '86, Researcher, Project 100, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

It was Ivy from the start who influenced me the most to pursue my passion for history. She did not simply teach. Rather, she bought to life the people and ideas so vividly that you couldn't help but think you had witnessed the events yourself. She was a bard singing a tale that energized our imaginations and gave voice to people long since gone but still so very much relevant. I can remember doing a presentation in her class on Magellan for which I built a model of his ship with LEGOs, dressed up as Magellan and reenacted his voyage using first-person narration. This experience would be the ignition point for my own passion for historical reenacting and eventually the vocation of teaching. I will be in her debt always.-- Peter Condrick '90, Derby Academy History Teacher

I remember the discussions we had on the literature Ivy introduced. The books The Wave and Chernowitz allowed her to demonstrate that the sentiments of a particular decade could still live on in the present. I remember creating short dramatic skits to reenact important events in China's history and the old record player she pulled out for us to listen to the voices of anger and distrust coming from American citizens regarding the Vietnam War. She would share primary sources with us on the classroom couches and we'd watch slide shows of art and of her travels to the Soviet Union. We read news articles and covers of periodicals from Time Magazine before and after the world learned who Hitler really was. She made us feel as though we had discovered everything we learned on our own. I remember her often replying to open-ended questions with "Well, I want to know why you think that happened." There are people out there now writing books on methods of teaching that Ivy has put in place over the last forty years. -- Peter Newby '98, Derby Academy Grade 4 Teacher

14Derby Academy 2011-2012 Review

Head of School, Andrea Archer, faculty and trustees, parents, families and friends ... and, not least, the Class of 2012, including my hosts, Avery and Madeline ... Greetings, grace and peace. Avery and Madeline coached me on this lecture. They said it should be brief, funny and meaningful. If I fail at any or all of these, it is not their fault. They tried their best. Thank you for the honor and privilege of sharing with you this most spectacular, rain-free day.

June 8th is a good day. It was on June 8th in 1786, in New York City, that a certain food was commercially produced for the very first time: ice cream. That makes June 8th a good day! Amen?

It was on June 8th in 1867 that Frank Lloyd Wright was born ... architect, interior designer, writer, educator, inventor and practitioner of organic architecture. June 8th is a good day. Amen?

It was on June 8th in 1917 that Walt Disney graduated from High School. Walt Disney ... film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, and philanthropist. June 8th is a good day. Amen?

It was on June 8th in 1953 that the US Supreme Court outlawed segregated lunch counters. June 8th is a good day.

It is the day the class of 2012, this magical class, this special class, is graduated from Derby Academy. June 8th is a good day. Amen?

Class of 2012, I invite you on this day, on this June 8th, to travel in your imaginations to Rome's Sistine Chapel, to look up into its great vaulted ceiling, vivid and undulating with Michelangelo's frescos... Can you see it in your minds' eyes?

On the central panel, among the greatest, grandest, most evocative works from any human hand: Michelangelo's Creation of Adam … Can you see it in your mind's eye? God's powerful body stretched to its full majesty and might, is supported by angels in flight and wrapped in a mantle, God leans and reaches towards Adam … Adam, represented as a resting athlete, languidly reaches his hand toward God's hand, his finger towards God's finger. Those inches between Adam's finger and God's have been described as the most electric, charged, sizzling inches in all of space.

It is the act of creation ... of creativity ... of connectivity and relationship between human and divine, heaven and earth. It is in that space between God's finger and Adam's—that space so charged, electric, sizzling—that are found the mysteries of life and death, good and evil, flesh and spirit, eternity and time, lament and celebration, mercy and judgment, despair and hope.

Here is what I know: It was from within that space—in that electric and charged space, that most creative and inspired space—that Frank Lloyd Wright (the anniversary of whose birthday this is) imagined and designed structures which harmonized humanity and our environment ... human habitat and nature. It was from within just such a space that he imagined Falling Water and New York's Guggenheim Museum.

It was from within that space, so alive and vibrant, that Walt Disney (the anniversary of whose own graduation day this is) created Mickey Mouse, the Lion King and the Skeleton Dance ... invented characters, voices, movement, color and stories that have brought us together across generations, made us laugh and cry, wonder and fly.

It was deep within that space that college students in the south in the 1950's, black students, students who tutored themselves in non-violence, who practiced courage, dared sit at whites-only lunch counters. It was in that holy and hellish space that they suffered shame and pain, spitting and beating, arrest and jail ... and helped changed the course of American history.

It was in that space—those inches between God's finger and Adam's, between earth and heaven, justice and mercy, right and wrong—that the US Supreme Court wrestled with the matter of legalized segregation and, on this day—June 8th—in 1953, made such segregation illegal in our nation's capital ... because segregation was then and is now immoral, unjust, cruel and ugly ... and unworthy of the human spirit.

Here's my challenge to you, graduates, class of 2012 ...find your way, make your way into those inches between God's finger and Adam's finger – where you are most alive, most complete, human and earthly, yet sparked with divinity ... stand in that space, study in it, play in it, learn and dance in it.

Judaism and Christianity—the religions that inspired Michelangelo's brush—claim this: that you are—each and everyone one of you is—created in the image of the Creator God.You were and are created creative ... created to be creative ... to live creatively: inventively, resourcefully, wittily, and with imagination. Created to live and work, to love and to play in that charged space ... where things matter.

I charge you, Class of 2012—this special class, this passionate class—be creative ... but not only in the arts and sciences ... be creative in mercy.

June 8th is a good day.

The 221st Derby Day LectureThis Space, by Nancy S. Taylor, Senior Minister, Old South Church in Boston, June 8, 2012

Derby Academy 2011-2012 Review 15

Be creative, Class of 2012, be creative in justice ... as were those brave,

bold, disciplined young college students who sat down at lunch counters and endured abuse,

physical and otherwise.

Be creative Class of 2012, in your generosity ... as was Madame Derby ... to whose financial generosity, grit and grace, we are indebted today. Be creative in generosity.

Be creative, Class of 2012, in bringing delight to others ... as was Walt Disney ...

Here's my challenge to you, graduates, Class of 2012 ... don't be afraid of this charged space ... It can be tense and contested, tricky and treacherous ... but it is where the action is ... it is where what happens matters.

This charged and sizzling space isn't confined to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel ... it can be summoned by you in the classroom and study hall, on the athletic fields and on the stage, in the laboratory and the observatory ... It can be uncovered in the history text and in the novel ... and in quiet conversation with a friend, under the stars

Class of 2012: your parents and grandparents, your teachers and coaches, have equipped you with what it takes to live deeply and well ... to operate in this high and holy space ... to make a difference to make your life matter.

Now, go for it. Go for it. Make it matter.

BENEDICTION

May you know the ingenuity of Frank Lloyd Wright, the gutsy generosity of Sarah Derby, the playfulness of Mr. Disney, the imagination of Michelangelo, the uncommon courage of those college students who changed and shaped American history, and the cool sweetness of ice cream. Go from this place loving God so much, that you love nothing else too much. And fearing God just enough, that you need fear nothing else at all. Amen.

my Golf & Tennis Tournament

2012

It could not have been a more beautiful day on May 17, 2012 as Derby Academy hosted its first Golf & Tennis Tournament at the Oyster Harbors Golf Club in Osterville. Seventy-four golfers and ten tennis players enjoyed the magnificent setting for a wonderful day that included a relaxing lunch, tennis round robin, golf scramble and best ball, an amazing silent auction, delicious buffet dinner and lively awards ceremony.

The event raised an impressive $39,574 for financial aid and brought together Derby faculty, parents, parents of alumni, new parents and friends. A tremendous thank you to the enthusiastic committee members and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the day a great success.

Derby Academy Annual Report of Giving 21

As the Chair of the Development Committee, I continue to be impressed by both the loyalty and the generosity of the families who support Derby. Once again, this year, we exceeded our Annual Fund goal and raised $507,092 for the school's operating budget. The contributions of each and every member

of the community made this success possible.

The Advancement Team led this year by Ellen Potter has focused on bringing a renewed energy to the development efforts at Derby. Ellen, Squeakie and Jami built on the traditional alumi/ae, parent and grandparent events and launched some new ones to include a Fall Spirit event and a Spring Golf and Tennis Tournament. The Golf and Tennis Tournament was an unqualified success and raised an additional $39,574 for the Financial Aid budget.

One of Derby's strengths is the depth of commitment of its constituents. Together the generosity of trustees, parents, parents of alumni/ae, alumni/ae, faculty, friends and even current students helps to sustain the extraordinary educational opportunities offered to students. As a result we are able to enroll students who would not otherwise be able to afford an independent school education and teachers are able to avail themselves of extraordinary professional development opportunities both locally and internationally. This year, for example, each teacher was given an iPad so that the students in each classroom can benefit from the best of tablet technology. On behalf of the students, faculty and administration please accept my deepest gratitude for continuing to make Derby a priority in your charitable giving.

Sincerely, Maureen D. Pace P'15, '17Development Committee Chair, Board of Trustees
