4 2011-12 Elmira College Women’s Ice Hockey

2011-12 Season Outlook

The 2011-12 Elmira College Women’s Hockey team enters this season looking to continue the programs winning tradition and get back to the NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hock-ey Tournament. EC failed to make the tournament last year for only the second time in the school’s 10 years as a program but still finished with a superb overall record of 16-8-2 and 12-4-2 conference record. The team earned the number three seed in the ECAC Women’s West playoffs before falling in the first round to Utica, 2-1. Under the direction of fourth year Head Coach Greg Fargo ’06 the Soaring Eagles are primed to be contenders in the highly competitive ECAC West. The Purple and Gold come into the season ranked 10th according the USCHO.com poll. Elmira boasted one of Divi-sion III’s most dangerous offensive units in the country throughout the season, yet again,

finishing ninth in the country in scoring offense at 3.38 goals per game. During ECAC West play, the Soaring Eagles finished with a total of 68 goals, for a remarkable average of 3.78 scores per game. Elmira College was led throughout the 2010-11 season offensively by standout forward Tori Charron ’14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Pan-thers, PWHL). In just her first season in the Purple and Gold, Charron led the nation with 28 goals scored, averaging 1.08 scores per con-test, and led the team with 37 total points. Charron accounted for 23 of Elmira’s 68 goals scored during conference play with five coming as game-winners. The Goodwood, Ontario native finished the ECAC West season averaging 1.42 points per game, third best in the league. For her accomplishments, Charron claimed ECAC West Rookie of the Year honors, and also landed a spot on the ECAC West Second Team. The 2011-12 Women’s Ice Hockey unit is led by returning Captains Alex McPhail ’12 (Oakville, ONT -- Toronto Aeros) and Alex Bresler ’12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select). McPhail appeared in all 26 games for EC registering one goal and two assists, while Bresler took the ice 24 times tallying eight points on five goals and three assists. Assistant Captains Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD -- NAHA) and Caitlin Metcalf ’13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge School for Athletes) also made great contributions on and off the ice this season. In 26 games during the year, the duo combined for nine goals and 20 assists from their forward positions. Forwards Tanis Lamoureux ’14 (Canton, MI -- Victory Honda), Amber Tirri ’13 (Ringwood, NJ -- Wyoming Seminary) and Lauren Campbell ’12 (Erie, PA -- Chatham University) demonstrated their talent throughout the 2010-11 season for EC. Lamoureux finished her first season in the Purple and Gold with nine goals and 13 assists for 22 total points. Tirri completed her second year for the Soaring Eagles with 13 total points on five goals and eight assists, while Campbell also reached double-digits in total points with 11. Elmira College also boasted one of the nation’s top defensive units last season. Elmira finished seventh in the nation in scoring defense allowing 42 goals for a 1.62 goals against average. Katy Walker ’12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Selects), Madison Johnston ’13 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto Aeros), and Mary-Kate Gellerman ’13 (Frederick, MD -- Washington Pride, JWHL) return to help secure the EC defense. The two players proved to be consistent on the defensive end, as well as an offensive threat for EC last season. Johnston recorded 18 total points on seven goals and 11 assists, while Walker also tallied 18 points on five goals and finished tied for the team lead in assists with 13. Second year defensemen Ella Stewart ’14 (Mississauga, ONT -- Notre Dame Hounds Midgets) looks to be a main contributor as she was in on 11 assists during the 2010-11 season. Lauren Sullivan ’13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville Stars) returns between the pipes to lock down the EC defense. Sullivan ap-peared in 19 games for EC last season, posting a 10-7-2 overall record, allowing only 32 goals and making 448 saves. Samantha Maguire ’13 (Findlay, OH -- Ohio Flames) and Laura Proietto ’13 (Woodbridge, ONT -- Etobicoke Dolphins) were also solid in limited action for Elmi-ra. Maguire appeared in four contests, making 91 stops, and allowing only eight goals. Proietto defended the net in three games, allowing only one goal en route to three victories. The Soaring Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the ice this season in the form of seven members of the Glorious Class of 2015 and two transfers from Wayne State University. 19 2011-12 Elmira College Women’s Ice Hockey

2010-11 Season in Review

The Elmira College Soaring Eagles Varsity Woman’s Ice Hockey team completed another success-ful season under the guidance of third year Head Coach Greg Fargo ’06. Fargo led the Purple and Gold to an overall record of 16-8-2 and a record of 12-4-2 in conference play, earning EC the number three seed in the ECAC Women’s West playoffs. Following a notable 2009-2010 season which culminated with a trip to the NCAA Semifinals, the Soaring Eagles proved to be a Division III powerhouse once again. Elmira boasted one of Divi-sion III’s most dangerous offensive units in the country throughout the season, yet again, finish-ing ninth in the country in scoring offense at 3.38 goals per game. During ECAC West play, the Soaring Eagles finished with a total of 68 goals, for a remarkable average of 3.78 scores per game. Elmira College was led throughout the season offensively by standout forward Tori Charron ’14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers, PWHL). In just her first season in the Purple and Gold, Charron led the nation with 28 goals scored, averaging 1.08 scores per contest, and led the team with 37 total points. Charron accounted for 23 of Elmira’s 68 goals scored during conference play this season with five being game-winners. The Goodwood, Ontario native finished the ECAC West season averaging 1.42 points per game, third best in the league. For her accomplish-

ments, Charron claimed ECAC West Rookie of the Year honors, and also landed a spot on the ECAC West Second Team. The 2010-11 team was directed by Captains Alex McPhail ’12 (Oakville, ONT -- Toronto Aeros, PWHL) and Alex Bresler ’12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Select, JWHL). McPhail appeared in all 26 games for EC registering 1 goal and 2 assists, while Bresler took the ice 24 times tally-ing 8 points on 5 goals and 3 assists. Assistant Captains Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD -- NAHA, JWHL) and Caitlin Metcalf ’13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge School for Athletes, JWHL) also made great contributions on and off the ice this season. In 26 games this season, the duo combined for 9 goals and 20 assists from their forward positions. Forwards Tanis Lamoureux ’14 (Canton, MI -- Victory Honda, TOEHL), Amber Tirri ’13 (Ringwood, NJ -- Wyoming Seminary, NAPHA), Lauren Campbell ’12 (Erie, PA -- Chatham University), and Samantha Curk ’13 (Dorchester, ONT -- Niagara University) demonstrated their talent throughout the 2010-11 season for EC. Lamoureux finished her first season in the Purple and Gold with 9 goals and 13 assists for 22 total points. Tirri completed her second year for the Soaring Eagles with 13 total points on 5 goals and 8 assists, while Campbell and Curk also reached double-digits in total points with 11 each. Elmira College also boasted one of the nation’s top defensive units this season. Elmira finished seventh in the nation in scoring defense allowing 42 goals for a 1.62 goals against average. The Soaring Eagles defense was led by the leadership of lone fourth year player Amanda Ritzel ’11 (Spencerport, NY -- Toronto Rattlers). Ritzel appeared in all 26 games this season netting 2 goals and assisting on 5 more for the Purple and Gold. For her career, Ritzel took the ice in 107 games for EC, tallying 7 goals and 22 assists from her defensive position. Katy Walker ’12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Selects), Madison Johnston ’13 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto Aeros, PWHL), and Mary-Kate Gel-lerman ’13 (Frederick, MD -- Washington Pride, JWHL) secured the EC defense with their stellar play throughout the season for Elmira. The two players proved to be consistent on the defensive end, as well as an offensive threat for EC. Johnston recorded 18 total points on 7 goals and 11 assists, while Walker also tallied 18 points on 5 goals and finished tied for the team lead in assists with 13. First year defense-men Ella Stewart ’14 (Mississauga, ONT -- Notre Dame Hounds Midgets) was also a main contributor as she was in on 11 assists this year. EC net minder Lauren Sullivan ’13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville Stars, PWHL) proved to be outstanding yet again this season defending the net. Sullivan appeared in 19 games for EC posting a 10-7-2 overall rec-ord, allowing only 32 goals and making 448 saves this season. Samantha Maguire ’13 (Findlay, OH -- Ohio Flames, TOEHL) and Laura Proietto ’13 (Woodbridge, ONT -- Etobicoke Dolphins, PWHL) were also solid in limited action this season for Elmira. Maguire appeared in 4 contests, made 91 stops, and allowed only 8 goals. Proietto defended the net in 3 games this season allowing only 1 goal en route to 3 victories. First year players Kelsey Evershed ’14 (Franktown, ONT -- Winchendon School), Bri-ana Saltstone ’14 (North Bay, ONT -- Southwest Wildcats, PWHL), Maddy Charbon-neau ’14 (Greeley, CO -- Colorado Select, JWHL), Jocelynne Hudgins ’14 (Bowmanville, ONT -- Durham West, PWHL), and Jenna Esposito ’14 (Perkasie, PA -- Pennridge) all gained valuable experience this season. Evershed finished the season with 8 total points for EC (4 goals, 4 assists). Saltstone and Charbonneau appeared in all 26 contests this season with Charbonneau contributing 6 assists during conference play. The Soaring Eagles will lose Ritzel to graduation this year.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ELMIRA COLLEGE SOARING EAGLE

“If you’re one of the privileged few to attend this College be ready to follow your dream; a college education while doing what you desire, play-ing hockey for an elite team. Isn’t that what you dreamed of accomplishing? I know I did.

What stands out in my mind most of all is the chemistry we had and how we always played for each other. Everyone has always been dedicat-ed to make both themselves a better player as well as their teammates. That is what wins championships. The best feeling in the world is competing for the NCAA championship. The excitement, the media and publicity, the pressure, the huge crowds and the overall feeling of being on the ice in that moment is indescribable. It is something you have to experience to fully understand. That should be your goal…

If you’re dedicated, hard working and ready to grow into the best person and athlete that you can be, then you will excel on this team and at this college.”

“To be an Elmira College Women’s Hockey Player is to be part of a family. We are a bunch of “sisters” who will guard each other until the end. With constant effort and determination we are able to make not only ourselves better, but the team and community as a whole. We are the type of people that will be friends for life. To enter our team is to enter a bond that will never be forgotten. From the ups of the season to the lows we will always be there for one another and I know that is something I will take with me forever. Anything, anytime, anywhere…we will be there.”

At Elmira College academics are a priority and we believe in the DIII philosophy which offers Student-Athletes the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully integrate athlet-ics and academics. EC Student-Athletes score big on the ice and in the classroom, as 61% have a GPA of 3.0 or better. The Women’s Hockey program stress academics even more so. Each member of the team is required to attend team study hall hours during each term in order to reach their personal academic goals. Academically the College provides the resources for all students to succeed. Academic tutoring and support is free to all full-time stu-dents. In addition, tutors in math and writing are available in freshman dormitory lounges many evenings during Term I and Term II. Each week, all freshman in our nationally recognized Writing Program must attend three class meetings and a one half-hour individual tutorial session with their instructor to review and improve their writing skills. EC continues to be on the forefront of developing exciting and unique academic experiences throughout the year. In the spring term students are encouraged to study abroad and to take classes of higher interest. Students have studied in countries such as San Salvador, the Bahamas, Spain, France, Russia, Italy, Germany, Ec-

Elmira College is where common good is a required course. We expect Elmira College graduates to be thrust into leader-ship roles in their future communities. Community service is an important part of fulfilling that role. Elmira College is the only College in the nation to require and give credit for both and internship and community service. With that, EC is committed to fostering an environment where students look to help the greater good. The Women’s Hockey program is a shining of example of the importance and impact that community service can have. All members of the Varsity Women’s Ice Hockey program exceed expectations by volunteering in the Elmira, Corning and other local communities at least twice a month. Our Women’s Ice Hockey athletes volunteer with various groups and organizations such as: • Breast Cancer Awareness • CHAMPS Life Skills • Elmira Animal Shelter • Elmira City School District • Elmira Food Bank • Head Start • Second Chance Ranch • SOAR (reading program) • Southern Tier Pediatrics • St. John Church • YMCA Camp Cory

Soaring Eagles in the Weight Room

31 2011-12 Elmira College Women’s Ice Hockey

Each year the goal of the EC Women’s Hockey pro-gram is to compete to win another National Champi-onship. It is the combination of cardiovascular condi-tioning, weight training and on-ice development that will allow the program to reach that goal. The primary objective of the Elmira College Women’s Hockey Strength and Conditioning program is to pro-vide sport specific training which will help each athlete reach their maximum on-ice potential. The program is year round and is broken into four crucial and integrated segments: Off-season, Pre-season, In-season and Post-season training. Each seg-ment includes specific goals for all team members in order to improve upon the athlete’s weaknesses and raise the fitness level for on-ice performance. A major emphasis is placed on developing speed, as well as func-tional power and strength in order for the athlete to reach their highest potential. Finally the strength and conditioning program not only serves as an imperative way to improve perfor-mance, but is also a critical means to avoid injuries throughout the demanding hockey season.

Murray Athletic Center

The Murray Athletic Center, or the Domes, is the home of the Soaring Eagles Hockey program and has been for the past 30 years. In the summer of 2001 a major renovation pro-ject took place that included new locker rooms and new offices for the hockey program, as well as four new multi-purpose locker rooms and a new sports medicine area. These enhancements to the facility provide the Soaring Eagles with a state-of-the-art locker room which includes individual maple player stalls, a stick room with work bench area, stereo and entertainment center, video editing equipment, coaches offices and meeting area, intercom system, and dehumidification system. The Murray Athletic Center has been one of the premiere Division III hockey facilities in the country and these improvements demonstrate the College's commit-ment to provide the student-athletes with the necessary facilities to support the athletics programs at the College. The Soaring Eagles continue to have one of the highest home attendance averages in the country with fre-quent sell-out crowds. The Domes are a truly unique facil-ity that the Soaring Eagles are happy to call home, and a place where few opponents enjoy much success.
