Introduction From the unorthodox minds at COUP D’ETAT, San

Francisco, comes an extraordinary new development

in design and space, COUP. Unconventional, the

new showroom is an expansion from a 2500 sq. ft.

showroom to a new 8500 sq. ft. cathedral conceived by

Creative Director, Darin Geise and Erin Martin Design;

featuring gigantic forms of concrete, a colonnade of

arches, industrial elegance, secret rooms, and the best

party of the Fall 2010 season. A formal evolution of the

COUP D’ETAT aesthetic focusing on accessibility and

flexibility; a more end user friendly environment of

transitional antiques, vintage furniture, cool lighting,

and complemented by a deftly executed custom line,

built on short lead times and accommodating designer

specific needs. As the changing tide continues to

alter the landscape of the design community in San

Francisco, COUP looks ahead to the future.

M Consortium?

Erin Martin, the rising star and owner of M in downtown

St. Helena, known for transforming conservative farmhouse

decor into an off-the-cuff, brick and mortar mix of high style

California design debuts her new product line M Consortium.

A favorite of Elle Decor, Diane Keaton, Robert Redford, Ellen

Degeneres and more. The introduction of the M Consortium

line into the new COUP space is Erin’s first entry into the

San Francisco fray.

The Story of COUP. From a monthly storage rental to flea market antique

peddling, staple gun upholstery, and D.I.Y. refinishing COUP

D’ETAT was founded in 2004 by Darin Geise. Darin started

with his hands, upholstering flea market finds and getting

up at 3:30 in the morning to sell his objects at the Alameda

Point Flea Market. He became an overnight sensation and

the marquee attraction at the monthly market, routinely

selling out of his goods before midday. Beginning in the

shadows of the Antique Giants of Jackson Square, Therien

and Co, Ed Hardy, and Candace Barnes, COUP D’ETAT became

the premier destination for designers in San Francisco.

COUP is founded on the principle that nothing is principally

static, every stone must be turned, and the last piece of discarded

furniture is the next masterpiece.

COUP Timeline.

2004

After 7 years of success at Shears and Windows Darin opens a

live/work showroom in the Portrero district.

2005

Develops a sales outreach and marketing strategy utilizing

1stdibs.com, and employing a multitude of unconventional

methods to bring COUP D’ETAT’s product to it’s target client,

designers. The Successful COUP D’ETAT Studio Line begins with

the Spanish Baroque Style Chair, and blossoms as the firm’s

product becomes more in demand.

July 2007

Expands into a larger space in Design District with huge Year One

Party. A star is born. European buying trips begin.

Induction of new space shifts aesthetic approach and COUP

D’ETAT’s market identity.

October 2008

Year two, market Crashes, everyone freaks out. COUP D’ETAT

bands together and grows at a faster clip than the previous year.

2009

Five years of consecutive growth leads to a successful pop up shop

in NYC. SF Decorator Showcase approached to decorate a room

not offered in bidding process... 2009 Dweller’s Lodge.

2010

Launch of COUP D’ETAT INC. at Decorator Showcase Hall of

Wisdom & Enlightenment. Also launches its COUP STUDIO line

exclusively at R-Hughes in Atlanta. In an effort to simplify the

brand, COUP is conceived. COUP build out May-September ‘10,

opens September 30.
