2011 annual report - central city concern

Dear Friends,

I’m proud to tell you that 2011 was a year of major achievement at Central City Concern. With your help, we:

· Inspired 8,000 individuals to work toward healthier lifestyle choices for themselves and their children through the support of peers, staff and volunteers

· Renovated four older buildings, improving energy efficiency and preserving 160 units of affordable housing

· Removed 38,361 graffiti tags and picked up 30,889 bags of trash in the downtown area to make our city cleaner and safer

· Welcomed more than 2,000 adults and more than 100 children home in our supportive housing communities

· Relocated a specialty mental health services clinic to our downtown health service campus where we engage in 80,000 client visits yearly to provide integrated primary and behavioral healthcare

· Trained 120 future health care providers – doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc. – so they can work effectively with patients who have multiple diagnoses complicated by poverty and other factors

· Secured jobs for 509 people exiting homelessness and provided training and work experience to hundreds more

· Helped more than 3,100 people begin their recovery journey

The stories in this annual report illustrate Central City Concern’s comprehensive approach to ending homelessness. Each story is told from the perspective of an individual who has found a unique way to engage with Central City Concern’s four program areas – housing, healthcare, peer relationships, and income – to achieve lasting personal transformation. Along with these stories, you will also find quotes from volunteers and donors who have stepped forward to assist Central City Concern in fulfilling our mission.

At Central City Concern, we know that there are many paths in life that can lead to homelessness and that there is no one-size-fits-all solution that will end homelessness for everyone. Each person’s recovery story is personal. Some achieve self-sufficiency quickly after finding a place to live and employment support. Others need the intensive assistance of a multi-disciplinary care team and a community of peers to help them rise above the challenges they face.

1. Direct access to housing which supports lifestyle changeWhen I first learned about Central City Concern, I was homeless, pregnant, and addicted to drugs and alcohol. DHS was talking about taking my baby away. I felt totally alone, and like I could never do anything right.

My life changed when I entered the Letty Owings Center. This is Central City Concern’s residential drug treatment program for women, where my daughter was born drug-free in 2007.

In April 2008, my daughter and I moved into an apartment in Central City Concern’s alcohol and drug free family housing. I couldn’t believe how nice it was. Our neighbors were people just like me, moms working hard for a better future for ourselves and our kids.

Central City Concern’s staff members and volunteers were there for us day and night. With their help, and the support of my new neighbors, I spent the next three years pursuing my employment goals and my commitment to remain clean and sober. I got help with childcare, bus tickets, and dishes for my kitchen.

When I was ready to move on, Central City Concern even gave me help with my security deposit. I’m now off of all public assistance and am supporting my family on my own. I know I couldn’t have made it here without the help I received while living in Central City Concern’s family housing. That experience, and the friends I made, gave me the confidence to believe I could do something right.

My name is St. Clair. I’m a good guy, and I enjoy talking to people. I like coming here, and like the people. I like the Living Room. Most people here know me - they smile and say ‘Hey.’ I take the bus here every day so I can get my meds and nebulizer treatment, and my check. I keep my appointments and stuff. I haven’t been to the emergency room for my asthma for over 2 years now. Before I had to go to the hospital for asthma attacks. In 2009 I was at the Emergency Room 40 times, sometimes I had to call the ambulance. It was scary, but now I don’t remember what that felt like.

After I get my treatments each day I get a check from my money manager for spending money. I live with my family and help pay the rent now. I like to play basketball and enjoy sports. I feel better in the world, more confident. I like coming here, it’s something to do.

*The Living Room is a space in Central City Concern’s Old Town Recovery Center where clients can relax and visit with each other, learn a new skill, work on an art project and get a snack. It is a place to belong and connect.

“I am a second-year medical student at OHSU and I was lucky enough to shadow one of Central City Concern’s Old Town Clinic’s doctors for a year. The Clinic’s work is so innovative and important to the community. They’ve created multi-disciplinary care teams who work in conjunction with one another to address every aspect of a person’s life as it pertains to their health. I have witnessed the amazing results first hand of such an approach and I learned so much as to how to care for people with multiple issues related to mental illnesses, chronic health problems, addictions and homelessness.”

I have battled my addiction since I was a teenager. In my 20s and 30s I was homeless off and on, with a long history of petty crimes I committed to pay for drugs and alcohol. Then I lost custody of my daughter, and that scared me so bad I just knew I had to change my life.

I had tried other recovery program before and wasn’t successful. After getting sober at Central City Concern’s Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center, I connected to Central City Concern’s outpatient Recovery Center. I was finally connected with people who understood what I was going through. They knew all the challenges because they had been there themselves, and they never gave up on me so I just couldn’t give up on myself either.

Then, I signed up for Central City Concern’s Community Volunteer Corps and found out I had skills that people appreciated. I was living in Central City Concern’s alcohol and drug free housing at that time, and making new friends there who were staying clean like me. I got a full-time job, and I took parenting classes. Then the best thing in my life happened. A judge granted me part-time custody of my daughter. Last year, I moved out of Central City Concern’s housing and into my own place. I could never have done any of this without the help of all my friends and mentors in recovery.

Military service runs in my family so of course I enlisted after high school, and I’m proud of the service I gave to our country. After I was discharged, I had steady work but not long ago, my job was discontinued. I came to Oregon for a job I had been told was waiting for me. When I got here though, I found out that job no longer existed. I was broke, with no friends to help me. I soon found myself a homeless veteran in Portland.

Fortunately, a local shelter worker told me about Central City Concern’s programs for veterans. The staff at Central City Concern put me in transitional housing and got me a food box. At their Employment Access Center I used the skills I had gained in the military to grab onto every opportunity they offered. I created a resume and applied for jobs. Their employment specialists helped me to get interviews with companies interested in hiring veterans. I attended the job club and met speakers from local companies. One of the employers who visited the job club saw that I was a hard worker and urged me to apply at her shipping company. In a matter of days, I was an apprentice carpenter with a steady income, health insurance, and retirement benefits.

My experience in the military gave me the strength to get through this hard time in my life. Central City Concern understood that about me, and they helped me to show others what I was capable of.
