Appendix 1 - In Memoriam John Sprent

John Frederick Adrian Sprent CBE DSc FRCVS FACVSc FAA

(1915-2010)

John Sprent, long-standing editor of the International Journal for Parasitology, passed away on 1st November 2010. He was 95. Emeritus Professor J.F.A. Sprent made outstanding contributions, over more than 60 years, to education, research and scholarship within the field of Parasitology. His work included the field of pathology as well as detailed classical studies on taxonomy, life-cycles, zoogeography and evolution of parasites.

John had a signal impact on the discipline of Parasitology. After graduating in Veterinary Sciences and Zoology from the University of London, he commenced his doctoral studies in Africa, elucidating the life cycle of Bunostomum hookworms of cattle. He subsequently held research fellowships in the U.K., U.S.A. and Canada.

John arrived in Australia with his wife Muriel and young family in 1952 to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Parasitology at the University of Queensland. John’s vision for parasitology was larger than this brief, however, and he was soon pressing to establish a primary focus for all aspects of the discipline, a vision that led to the establishment of the Department of Parasitology at the University in 1960, the only such Department to exist in Australia. While serving as Professor of Parasitology, Head of Department and Dean of Veterinary Sciences, he pressed on with his life work on ascaridoid nematodes, writing many keynote papers of their pathogenesis, diversity and evolution. His work on migration of Toxocara larvae in hosts led to a new understanding of parasite pathogenesis, and provided an experimental basis for understanding visceral larva migrans.

With national and international colleagues, John played a key role in establishing the Australian Society for Parasitology, of which he was elected Foundation President in 1964. As befitting a strong Society in those days, it was decided by members that they should sponsor a Journal. This resolve led to the establishment of the International Journal for Parasitology in 1971, under the editorship of Professor JD Smyth. John Sprent became Editor in 1974, a position he held for another 20 years, ably assisted throughout this period by his editorial assistant, Ms Mary Cremin. John’s tenure as Editor was characterised by his continuing passion for parasites and parasitology, and his compassionate and collegial support of authors and reviewers.

After retirement from the Journal, John spent his days on his beloved property in Moggill in the western suburbs of Brisbane. Here, he tended his rainforest and cattle, until ill health forced he and his second wife Mary to relocate to a care facility in early 2010.

John will be sadly missed for his many outstanding contributions to parasitology, particularly in the field of ascaridoid biology and for his strong and relentless support of parasitology in the post-WWII years. He was without doubt the foremost parasitologist in Australia and is recognized both nationally and internationally for his achievements. John will be remembered for his open and gentlemanly nature. John is survived by his wife Mary, his sons Jonathan and Antony and grandchildren.

A full memorial will be published in the Journal in 2012.

Appendix 2– Nomination for Fellow of the Australian Society for Parasitology Professor Alan Frederick Cowman is Head of the Division of Infection and Immunity at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) and Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Training in Immunology and Functional Genomics.

Professor Cowman was awarded a BSc (Honours) from Griffith University in 1979 and a PhD in Parasitology from the University of Melbourne in 1983. With the support of a CJ Martin Fellowship, he undertook a postdoctoral position for two years at the University of California, Berkeley. Returning to WEHI at the end of 1986, he was appointed a Laboratory Head in 1990 and Head of the Division of Infection and Immunity in 1999. He was awarded a Wellcome Trust Australian Senior Research Fellowship in 1988, and has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar since 1993. He entered the National Health and Medical Research Council Fellowship system in 1994 and was awarded an inaugural National Health and Medical Research Council Australia Fellowship in 2007.

Professor Cowman has had a major impact internationally on research on protozoan parasites, in particular Plasmodium. The overarching goal of his research is the design of new and effective interventions against malaria. A primary interest has been to understand how P. falciparum infects humans, the mechanisms it uses to evade the host immune responses, and what causes malaria pathogenesis. Currently, he is investigating how P. falciparum invades the human red blood cell and the remodelling of the erythrocyte during and after merozoite invasion, providing a protected niche for the parasite to multiply and establish infection while escaping the host immune responses. This has provided new insights into the mechanisms of virulence and pathogenesis. Related work has furthered our understanding of antigenic variation through switching expression of variant surface proteins encoded by the var gene family. Other areas of interest include the molecular basis of drug resistance in malaria, the mechanism of cytoadherence of malaria-infected human red cells, and parasite genome structure and plasticity and its role in pathogenesis. His research has led to a better understanding of how the malaria parasite evades detection by the human immune system and how it becomes resistant to anti-malarial drugs. Fundamental biological findings from his research are also informing efforts to identify novel malaria vaccine candidates targeted at the asexual blood stage.

Throughout his career, Professor Cowman has been the recipient of many awards, including the Burnet Prize from WEHI in1990, the Glaxo Award for Advanced Research from the Australian Society of Infectious Diseases in 1992, the Gottschalk Medal for Medical Science and Biology from the Australian Academy of Sciences in 1993, the Boehringer-Mannheim Medal from the Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1994, the Glaxo-Wellcome Australia Medal from GlaxoSmithKline in 1998, the Royal Society of Victoria Medal for Scientific Research in 2002, the Centenary Medal from the Commonwealth of Australia in 2002, the Lemberg Medal from the Australian Society for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in 2006, and the Howard Taylor Ricketts Medal for Medicine from the University of Chicago in 2010. In 2010 he was also appointed President of the World Federation of Parasitologists, further attesting to his international standing in the field of Parasitology. He was appointed as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2001 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge in 2011.

He is currently on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science, and on the Editorial Boards of Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology and Drug Discovery Today, was Editor of Molecular Microbiology from 2002-2011 and on that Editorial Board of Molecular Microbiology from 1997-2002. He is a regular reviewer for major funding bodies, including the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Australian Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, NIH and WHO/TDR. In 2007-10, he Chaired the highly successful ICOPA XII Conference Organising Committee attended by over 1700 delegates. Professor Cowman has published over 248 peer-reviewed publications, many in top ranking journals including an impressive 10 papers in Nature, 7 papers in Science, 10 papers in Cell,

and 19 papers in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. His papers have been cited more than 13,000 times. His h-index is 64. He has trained 26 Postdoctoral Fellows and 12 PhD students.

In light of his outstanding contributions to the field of Parasitology, Professor Alan Cowman is a worthy recipient of the title, Fellow of the Australian Society for Parasitology.

Appendix 4 – Treasurer’s Report Society Assets The Society’s assets look strong with over $800,000 in bank and investment assets plus assets in the ‘History of Parasitology’ and ‘Parasites in Focus’. The return on investment at only $17,000 was poor on an investment of nearly $400,000 along with global markets. The Conference account has been retermed the ICOPA Account for the interim. Income and expenses Our major income is from IJP royalities which rose again in £ terms, but fell in $ terms. Nevertheless it is a healthy return. We also received a profit from ICOPA amounting to around $38,000. Membership income has risen as a result of the fee rise. Our expenses remained similar to previous years although the new ASP Network arrangements didn’t draw on funds this year. Accounting costs and insurance have increased in the last 2 years. We have paid deposits for future conferences and expect to have those returned through registration income. The result is a healthly profit. The 2011-2012 Budget. The major change is the reuptake of ASP Network funds (including Strategic Planning initiatives) and Awards funding. Conference income and expenditure is included again (after ICOPA) and once venue deposits are accounted for, each conference should balance. A loss of 3% of assets is anticipated. Treasury No funds have been added to the iPAC account. Council is reconsider our investment portfolio in the light of volatile financial markets. The two year tenure of the Executive has allowed me to streamline many financial activities and employing a bookkeeper and an accountant as been useful and cost effective. WE are now effectively recovering GST. Audit The audit has been completed and the figures are reflected in the report.

Australian Society for Parasitology Report from the Secretariat July 2011

This report to the ASP Council covers Secretariat operations for the period January 2011 – July 2011. Membership Statistics (as at 01/07/2011). The total membership rose from 522 to 564 over the year to 1/7/2011. While the number of financial members has remained roughly the same, the proportion has dropped from 82% to 76% compared to the same time last year.

Membership Renewals As members voted to increase the membership dues at the AGM last year, the WildApricot database was updated to reflect the new fees of $150 for ordinary members, $40 for students, and to remove the Ordinary Member Discount level that had been created for the prompt payment concession. Emails were sent out in February to remind members that membership renewals were due on 1 April and to explain the changes in fees and payment options. Members were offered the option of paying online via PayPal, on the WildApricot membership site with their credit card, or by sending a cheque or money order. Members were also advised that we could no longer directly process their credit card details. Renewal reminders were sent to all current financial members and those non-financial members who were last financial to 1 April 2009 (two years unfinancial). Hard copy renewal notices were posted to those members who had specified no electronic contact or who did not have a valid email address. Follow up emails were sent in March, April, May and June to those who had not renewed. About 90% of members opted to renew online, and 10% sent in cheques or money orders. If members were in arrears with their payments, it was easier for them to send a cheque for the balance owing, as the WildApricot site charges the new fee for 2011 for previous years’ membership as well. However, a few members having arrears did renew online, paid at the higher rate, and they subsequently refunded the difference via PayPal. Approximately 14 members advised that they were not renewing their membership this year. The reasons given were that they were retiring or no longer working in parasitology or for financial reasons. These records have been archived.

Of the 134 members whose membership was overdue, 93 were financial up until 1 April 2011. These members will be advised shortly that their membership of the ASP will lapse if they do not renew, but that it can be reactivated at any time by paying outstanding fees. Lapsed membership means that these members can still log in and renew their membership, but their membership status is no longer active. A list of members who have been unfinancial for 2 years at 30 June 2011 has been provided to Council with this report for approval to archive their membership records in October if they have not renewed. Archived records are still retained on the membership database, and they can be reactivated at any time with the payment of outstanding dues. Letters were sent and phone calls made, to re-establish contact with members whose emails had bounced and for members without email addresses. Letters were sent to work or home address and the State Councillors have also assisted with details of the whereabouts of some members. New Membership Applications Since the beginning of the year, there have been 63 new membership applications of which 27 have been ordinary members and 36 student members. This is a similar number to the same period last year. Over 90% of these new applications were completed and paid online via PayPal. The others mailed or emailed the application form and paid with cheque or money order. Membership details were then completed on the WildApricot database and the Executive Secretary advised when there were applications to approve. Once approved, new members received an automatic welcome email from the President and a tax invoice for the membership fee. Online Membership Site: WildApricot The online membership site had another upgrade in May. A useful improvement is that now a log kept of emails sent to each contact. The database is incorrectly showing a number of members’ records as owing $20. This is a result of refunds made in 2009 where members paid $80 and were refunded $20 due to the prompt payment concession. I am attempting to get the helpdesk to resolve this problem. Secretariat Contract I have advised the Executive that my contract with the ASP has expired and that I while I will not be seeking to renew it, I am willing to continue with the Secretariat duties for such time as arrangements can be made for a handover to my replacement. I have enjoyed working with the Society and its members and wish to thank the Executive for the opportunity to do so. Report prepared by Lynette Wynn, July 2011

Appendix 6 – Network Convener’s Report Newsletter

Newsletters were published in January, March, May, August and October, 2010, and in February and July, 2011. Ideally, we’d like to publish in February, April, June, August, October and December each year – this proved problematic this year due to (a) the move to JCU (and subsequent cyclone and associated disruptions), (b) an unfortunate clash in timing of the ASP Annual Conference and the QLD Tropical Health Alliance launch, (c) absence of extra administrative assistance for conference preparation, and (d) an irreversible computer hard dive crash. IJP Feature Stories continued to be a highlight of the Newsletter including: October, 2010 Newsletter – Elizabeth Perkins (University of Adelaide), Ian Whittington (University of Adelaide and South Australian Museum), Steve Donnellan and Terry Bertozzi (South Australian Museum), “Closing the mitochondrial circle on paraphyly of the Monogenea (Platyhelminthes) infers evolution in the diet of parasitic flatworms” in the September 2010 issue of the IJP. February, 2011 Newsletter – Stephanie Godfrey and Mike Bull (Flinders University), and Jennifer Moore and Nicola Nelson (Victoria University of Wellington) published their article, “Social network structure and parasite infection patterns in a territorial reptile, the tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus)” in the November 2010 issue of the IJP. July, 2011 Newsletter – Lisa Jones interviewed Kevin Saliba and Andrew Kotze about the new IJP spin-off journal, IJP: Drugs and Drug Resistance. 2011 Conference Report Registrations: 210 Presentations: 18 Plenary or Symposium Lectures; 84 Contributed Papers; 30 Poster-Oral Presentations; 24 Poster-only presentations. It has now travelled to every state and territory in Australia, including all capital cities (except Hobart) and numerous regional centres. It is showing signs of wear and tear, and the cost of repairs and removals is something that now has to be seriously considered in a “cost-benefit” context. The time may have come to “retire” it to a permanent home – the Queensland Museum has offered to take it permanently and Council needs to consider this and potential terms of transferring it to the Queensland Museum. New Contract The new contract for Network funding was agreed between the ASP Executive and James Cook University JCU) in March, 2011. The new terms of the Network funding are:

1) “Chief Investigators” to be listed as Professor Nick Smith and Ms Lisa Jones; 2) JCU to become the Administering Organisation for the Network; 3) Professor Nick Smith to continue as Convenor of the Network and, thereby, serve as a

member of the ASP Council; 4) Ms Lisa Jones to continue as the Communications and Strategic Development Coordinator –

Ms Jones will be an employee of JCU and will also serve as ASP Newsletter Editor and, therefore, be a member of the ASP Council;

5) The start date will be February 1, 2011 and the end date will be January 31, 2014; 6) The ASP offers an initial commitment of $255,000, paid in six instalments of $42,500 as per

this schedule

• Instalment 1, March 31, 2011; • Instalment 2, September 30, 2011;

7) The Gift from the ASP will be used as follows: (a) $215,000 will be a contribution (approximately 60% of fulltime, HEW Level 9, Step 4) towards the salary of the Network Communications and Strategic Development Coordinator from February 1, 2011 to January 31, 2014, in the first instance; (b) $40,000 will be for the support of Network activities and awards – see (iii) below – in 2011, with the subsequent level of funding for such activities and awards to be determined by the ASP at its Annual General Meetings in July of 2011, 2012 and 2013 and provided to JCU separately from this $255,000 Gift.

Annual Report We propose that, from hereon, the Annual Report be presented to Council and the general membership at the AGM with the following format:

• Introduction, including funding and operating arrangements and how the Network contributes to the “National Benefit”;

• Report on Conferences and Workshops; • Report on Newsletters; • Report on Researcher Exchange, Training and Travel Grants including case studies and

outcomes (publications, grants seminars etc); • Significant Contributions and Highlights (prizes and awards – including all ASP Awards – and

publications of particular note); • Media and Outreach activities; • Survey of members; • Register of ASP members; • Budget statement; • Appendix 1 – Publications; • Appendix 2 – Grants Awards.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR PARASITOLOGY Published monthly by Elsevier Ltd in collaboration with

The Australian Society for Parasitology Inc.

Editor-in-Chief: Professor Alex Loukas E-mail: [email protected]

IJP Editor’s report to ASP Council, July 2011. Editorial issues. Prof Brian Cooke has settled into the position of Deputy Editor and is doing an outstanding job in the role. We have continued to add new Specialist Editors to the IJP Editorial Board to cover the broad range of areas in which we are receiving submissions. Recent additions to the IJP Editorial Board include Dr Ala Lew-Tabor (Australia), Dr Robert Adlard (Australia), Dr Jesus Valenzuela (USA) and Dr Alison Dunn (UK). Prof Nick Sangster has stepped down from the IJP Editorial Board to join the board of IJP-DDR. Nick’s service to the IJP as a past Editor-in-Chief and in various Specialist Editor roles will be acknowledged with a gift from IJP. Nick has served on the IJP Editorial Board in different roles between 1996 and 2011. Impact Factor and citations. The 2010 Impact Factor* was 3.822, an increase of 0.003 on 2009 and the highest on record. The five-year Impact Factor is 3.938. Of the journals in the Parasitology category (32 in total) we are still the highest ranking (impact factor) journal that publishes research articles purely devoted to parasitology. We are fourth in the category but only behind the review journal, Trends Parasitol and the two PLoS journals (Pathogens and Neglect Trop Dis – both of which also publish on virology and bacteriology). It is difficult to predict Impact Factors as the citation information available on-line always shows less citations than are recorded in the final Impact Factor report. Based on the information available, we expect the 2011 Impact Factor to be similar to 2010. The ICOPA special issue from 2010 contained numerous topical reviews by high profile researchers, so we expect that issue to cite well and be reflected in next year’s IF. *Notes about journal ranking systems. The Impact Factor is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past two years have been cited in the JCR year. The 5-year journal Impact Factor is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year. It is calculated by dividing the number of citations in the JCR year by the total number of articles published in the five previous years. ASP Royalty Payment. The royalty paid to the ASP in 2011 (for 2010) was GBP 127,003.97 which was approximately GBP 31,050 higher than the previous payment. This amount includes the higher percentage agreed with Elsevier (i.e. 35% of profits, up from 25% received in the past). Following recent trends, electronic revenue once again increased but this was partly neutralised by the drop in print revenue. Most of the additional revenue resulted from electronic revenue and some bulk sales (IJP published a Special Issue for the ICOPA XII conference, copies of which were purchased by IJP for distribution to invited speakers attending the conference). Strategic Direction Internationalisation. We are continuing to target international authors and audiences, particularly the U.S. authors who traditionally publish in their own journals such as J Parasitol. Submissions from the U.S. have increased again, from 16% in 2009 to 18% in 2010, and currently at 20% for 2011 thus far. Open access and website improvements. We will continue to push authors towards paying the fees to

make their articles open access. Our new initiatives on the journal website (eTOC alerts, editor’s choice article, graphical abstracts, author-generated summaries, links to Parasitology portal) have been well received. A number of ASP members (Jason Mulvenna, Chris Engwerda and myself) were involved in the Elsevier Article of the Future project – papers from IJP were selected for the development of prototype databases in this exciting new initiative that was announced to the community in June 2011. We continue to publish eye catching and high quality cover images – see recent examples at the end of this report. Publicity. I will continue to promote the journal at international meetings but the impact and immediacy factors indicate the high standing that the journal enjoys. The website initiatives described above will serve to improve publicity. IJP sister journals IJP-Drugs and Drug Resistance Council will be aware of the recent launch of IJP-DDR. We are all very excited about our new sister journal and look forward to followings its progress and ensuring smooth transition of manuscripts (and editorial expertise) between the journals. Elsevier are working towards implementing direct transfer of manuscript between the journals on the EES website if authors provide their consent. IJP-Parasites and Wildlife (PAW) Andy Thompson has proposed the idea of a second IJP sister journal, IJP-PAW, dedicated to wildlife diseases. As an editor of Veterinary Parasitology, Andy has noted an increasing number of papers in the wildlife diseases area but unless the aetiological agent(s) involved are of zoonotic significance, impact on livestock or are in zoo animals, they are not covered by Vet Parasitol’s scope. Andy notes that increasingly, parasitologists and other infectious disease experts want a vehicle to publish research on diseases that impact on the conservation of wildlife. In the past, much of what was published in this field came from wildlife veterinarians, particularly in North America, and consisted of opportunistic survey data, case reports and zoo medicine. However, the field has expanded enormously in recent years in terms of ecology, conservation, biodiversity, and surveillance. These papers appear in conservation journals most of which have impact factors of >4. There is thus an opportunity for IJP to capture this emerging market. Initial discussions between Andy and Dale Seaton at Elsevier are underway to examine feasibility of such a journal. Profile of Submissions 2010 statistics

: In 2010 we received 578 submissions with 52% rejected upfront and 72% rejected overall. Western Europe and Asia have been the main sources of manuscripts based on the country of origin of the corresponding author (data drawn from EES) with 23% from each region, followed by 14% from South America and 11% from North America.

2011 statistics

: During the period ending 31 May 2011 we received 223 submissions with 51% rejected upfront and 79% rejected overall. Eight of those submissions are still under review. Asia and North America have been the main sources of manuscripts based on the country of origin of the corresponding author (data drawn from EES) with 20% from each region, followed by 17% from Western Europe and 14% from South America.

Office and Budget Maria continues to work from her home office in Victoria. Communications and day-to-day IJP functions are working smoothly for Maria and the IJP Senior Editors. We have an agreement with Wendy Relf to do scientific editing of IJP manuscripts and provide back-up for Maria’s position. Wendy has now worked in Maria’s role for two periods of three weeks (one week of training followed by two weeks during which Maria was on leave). Wendy has worked well in Maria’s position and over time, Maria will teach Wendy more of her role so that in an emergency, Wendy can fill in for Maria and keep the IJP Editorial Office function running smoothly. There is an IJP instruction manual which Maria will update regularly and ensure that Wendy and other back-up staff have up-to-date copies in case they are required to provide emergency assistance. Wendy is based in Sydney and if necessary we can call on Katrina Moriarty (also based in Sydney) as secondary back-up. Katrina provided temporary assistance during Maria’s leave when IJP was based at the University of Sydney and can provide an extra level of back-up if required. E-i-C term Council should be mindful that my 3 year term as EiC ends March 31st 2012. At this stage I am prepared to be considered for another 3 year term but the decision on how to proceed lies with council. Alex Loukas

Journal aims and scope (abbreviated): The International Journal for Parasitology – Drugs and Drug Resistance publishes the results of original research in the area of anti-parasite drug identification, development and evaluation, and parasite drug resistance. The journal also covers research into natural products as anti-parasitic agents, and bioactive parasite products. Studies can be aimed at unicellular or multicellular parasites of human or veterinary importance. More information can be found at the journal homepage (http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/726218/description#description) Invited Reviews: As part of the Journal’s launch, the Editors in Chief have invited a number of leading scientists from around the world to contribute review articles describing the most recent developments in anti-parasitic drug discovery, as well as updates on the impact of drug resistance in a number of significant parasite species. These reviews will hopefully be received by late July-August 2011. Since journal articles will only be published electronically, hard copy issues will not normally exist. However, a hardcopy ‘issue’ containing these reviews is planned as a promotional exercise, allowing for hard copies to be displayed and distributed at conferences, meetings etc. Manuscript submissions: The journal is now accepting submissions. Papers can be submitted via the Elsevier electronic submission system (EES) at the following address (http://ees.elsevier.com/ijpddr/). To date we have received four manuscripts in the unicellular area. One of these has been rejected after review. The other three are currently ‘under review’. Correspondence is ongoing concerning a submission on a multicellular parasite. Planned promotional activities: A number of promotional activities are being planned by Elsevier. These include email campaigns, on-line and print advertising, conference and exhibition promotions, printed leaflets (a copy of the first leaflet being printed is attached), press releases, and communications through relevant Societies. Administrative/Office issues: Jacinta Collins from Elsevier is currently acting as the IJPDDR Journal Manager. The position has been advertised by Elsevier and candidates have been shortlisted. The appointed candidate will manage the Journal from Elsevier’s Amsterdam office. Andrew Kotze and Kevin Saliba Editors in Chief

Aims & Scope

The International Journal for Parasitology – Drugs and Drug Resistance publishes the results of original research in the area of anti-parasite drug identifi cation, development and evaluation, and parasite drug resistance. The journal also covers research into natural products as anti-parasitic agents, and bioactive parasite products. Studies can be aimed at unicellular or multicellular parasites of human or veterinary importance.

Original research includes the development of novel and innovative concepts and ideas, as well as experimental and observational science that raises new hypotheses. Because of its breadth of organism coverage, all contributions should include relevant information about the parasite of interest in order to be comprehensible to non-experts in the particular subject of papers.

The principal form of publication is the full length paper which contains substantial results from a major program of research. The Journal also provides a medium for highlighting selected papers reporting highly signifi cant original fi ndings, as Editor’s Choice Manuscripts. It also commissions papers with emphasis on shorter, focused Reviews of topical issues and strategically important subjects. The Journal encourages critical comment and debate on matters of current controversy

in the area of parasite drug resistance and anti-parasite drugs via ‘Current Opinions’.

The journal is open access and will be published on Elsevier’s ScienceDirect platform.

Appendix 10 - Amendments to Constitution

Motions to Amend the Constitution Amendment 1 Notifying members re membership by mail or email. Council agreed at the Melbourne 2010 ETM that members can be advised by mail or by email

regarding membership. Article III. Section 2 paragraph 9 Current text: Any member whose subscription is two years in arrears, and who has been notified of the fact by

mail, shall by decision of Council forfeit membership of the Society. Proposed change: Any member whose subscription is two years in arrears, and who has been notified of the fact in

writing, shall by decision of Council forfeit membership of the Society. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amendment 2 Financial statement date Katharine Trenholme was contacted by the Office of Fair Trading who noticed that there was a

discrepancy between the actual date our books were closed and the date stated in the Constitution. This amendment addresses this discrepancy.

Article IV Section 7 paragraph 3 Current version He/she shall submit a financial statement, duly audited, to the Council and to the Society which shall

be completed by the 30th June each year. Proposed changes He/she shall submit a financial statement, duly audited, to the Council and to the Society which shall be completed by the 30th April each year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amendment 3 This relates to Council agreeing to have the Convenor of the ASP Network sit on Council as a non-

voting member, integral to all ASP activities under Pillar 4-Delivering Training and Education. Note: if approved this Amendment will apply in Amendment 5.

Article IV. Section 1 paragraph 1 Current text: The Society shall be governed by a Council consisting of the following officers of the Society, namely:

the President, President – Elect or Vice President, Secretary, Executive Secretary, Treasurer, Editor(s), Convenor of the Bancroft-Mackerras Medal Committee, Archivist (non-voting), Newsletter Editor (non-voting), Webmaster (non-voting) and not less than 6 other elected members ..etc

ASP AGM 2011 APPENDIX 10 Page 2

Amendment 4 This relates to Amendment 3. If the Convenor of the ASP Network sits on Council we need a

mechanism of appointment. Article IV. Section 2 paragraph 4: (as circulated to members) Current text: The Newsletter Editor, Archivist and Webmaster shall be elected for a period of three (3) years and

then subject to re-election for further periods of three years with no limit to the number of years of continuous service.

Proposed change: The Newsletter Editor, Archivist, Webmaster and Convenor of the ASP Network shall be elected for a

period of three (3) years and then subject to re-election for further periods of three years with no limit to the number of years of continuous service.

Council wishes to propose a different change: Due to key role of the Convenor, Council wishes to appoint the Convenor of the ASP Network, as per

other key positions, not have he/she elected: so the amendment refers to paragraph 5. Article IV. Section 2 paragraph 5: Current text: The Editor(s) and Secretary shall be appointed by Council for a period of three (3) years and then

subject to re-appointment for further periods of three years with no limit to the number of years of continuous service.

Proposed change: The Editor(s), Secretary and Convenor of the ASP Network shall be appointed by Council for a period

of three (3) years and then subject to re-appointment for further periods of three years with no limit to the number of years of continuous service.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amendment 5 These relate to the creation of the new IJP-DDR Journal. We need multiple amendments reflecting the creation of the new IJP DDR Journal and to allow for

the new IJP DDR Editors to sit on Council. The ASP may create additional Journals in the future so the text is written to reflect such a broad context.

Article IV. Sections 1, 2, 8 Section 1: paragraph 1 Current text: The Society shall be governed by a Council consisting of the following officers of the Society, namely:

for Parasitology and each of the Society’s other Journals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amendment 6 Council agreed to remove the requirement for the BMM winner to be announced in the IJP. The

rationale is that: (i) the winner is announced using several formats (on our website, in the Newsletter); (ii) the winner publishes a paper in the IJP which is clearly annotated as being from the

BMM medallist; (iii) space in the IJP is at a premium (iv) the IJP now has a truly international focus, not an Australian focus By Law relating to Bancroft -Mackerras Medal, paragraph 13: Current text: 13. The Convenor shall ensure that a citation concerning the recipient of the Bancroft-Mackerras
