1000 Islands Parkway

Our HistoryMake a date with history this summer by exploring the Heritage Trail.

The 1000 Islands was first known as the “Garden of the Great Spirit” or ‘Manitouana.’ The name stems from a native legend, a legacy of the Iroquois Confederacy. The French would later rename the region in the 1600’s, calling the area Lac des Milles-Isles or 1000 Islands.

Loyalty to Great Britain brought refugees from the American Revolution in 1874. United Empire Loyalists brought with them industry, commerce and government.

Brockville is named after Sir Major Isaac Brock, the Canadian War hero of the War of 1812.
