RICHARD CARTHON - A SPECIAL PLAYER Byrd’s magical 2011 season happened primarily because of the skills of senior quarterback Richard Carthon. Carthon’s big-play ability gave opposing defenses fits because he had his hands on the football on every play. Carencro head coach Brent Indest and Bears’ defensive coordinator Trace Sutton thought so. "We had to keep it out of No. 7's (Carthon) hands," Indest said. "What a spe-cial player.""He (Carthon) is the most electrifying guy we've seen all year long," Sutton said. In his incredible career, Carthon rushed for 2,152 yards and 44 touchdowns. Richard rushed for two touchdowns in Byrd’s 34-21 loss to Carencro. His two rushing touchdowns against the Bears marked the 14th time in his career he’s rushed for two or more scores in a game. He also passed for 139 yards against Carencro. Carthon accounted for four touch-downs in a game four times in his stellar career. He helped lead his team to set or tie over 10 school records.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY Senior safety Will Anglin has been a stalwart performer for Byrd’s Purple Swarm defense for three years. A versatile player, Anglin was not only a standout on defense but special teams as well. Anglin finished the season second on the team with 54 tackles and four interceptions and also had a team-high 10 pass break-ups. He finishes his career among the career leaders in tackles, interceptions and passes defended.

THE X-MAN Junior fullback Xavier Long finished the year second on the team in rushing with 1,119 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was Byrd’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Brittain White rushed for 1,032 in 2007. The X-Man rushed for a game- and a career-high 198 yards in the Jackets 56-21 playoff win over West Jeff. He scored five rushing touchdowns against the Buccaneers which tied a school record held by four players.

THE PEOPLES CHOICE Senior safety Nicholas Peoples’ has been one of the greatest de-fensive backs and kick returners in school history. In Byrd’s quar-terfinal win over Rummel, he electrified the crowd with a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the longest punt return for a touchdown since Brent Smith’s 75-yarder against Fair Park in 2003. Peoples’ three interceptions against Parkway set the mod-ern-day, single-game record. His pick in Byrd’s playoff win against Airline tied his single-season interceptions record with five, and upped his career mark to 10. Peoples finishes his career as the leader in pass breakups with 35. He averaged an incredible 21 yards per punt return and 28 yards per kick return this season.
