The mission of Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School is to teach chil-dren to think creatively, challenge them to achieve to their fullest potential, prepare them to be leaders, strengthen their sense of Jewish identity and community, and equip them to live a joyous and meaningful Jewish life. TVT cultivates a passion in its students to love learning, live values and discover their heritage. From Lower School to Middle School to Upper School, TVT students work to their highest level of achievement – aca-demically, spiritually, morally and athletical-ly – under the guidance of talented educators in interactive classrooms that serve as cen-ters of discussion. TVT was founded in 1991 by Irving Gelman, a Holocaust survivor, in loving memory of Naomi Gelman Weiss.
LIFELONG LEARNING
Preschool and Beyond
JEwiSH dAy SCHoolSThe Hebrew Academy, founded in 1969, is Orange County’s oldest Hebrew day school, educating children from preschool through grade 12 on an 11-acre campus in Huntington Beach. It is the only school in southern California to have received two Presidential Blue Ribbons for Academic Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education. Its students come from unaf-filiated, Reform, Orthodox and Conservative households. With small classes and high teacher-student ratio, the Hebrew Academy provides individualized instruction in a cur-riculum that blends Judaic studies with a rigorous academic program that includes enrichment as well as advanced placement opportunities for all children. The Hebrew Academy believes that a well-balanced
religious and secular education will provide students the opportunity to grow into emo-tionally, academically, socially and spiritually involved Jewish men and women in the con-text of American society.

TVT educates and empowers young men and women to be heroes. To do so, the school integrates compelling teaching and authentic discovery with Jewish commitment and values, within an academic community focused on the whole learner.
Classes promote personalized attention and instruction. This attentiveness carries through to college guidance. Starting in middle school, every student is assigned a faculty advisor who acts as a coach throughout the middle school years. A student-centered approach to learning means TVT students are involved with teachers, fellow students and the curriculum.

Like the familiar blue passport used by travelers, a Passport to Jewish Life® opens the doors for young people in our community to reach exciting new Jewish educa-tional destinations! Every Passport holder can take a new step, plan a new journey, dream a new dream or explore a new passion in Jewish life, at home or abroad.
Passports are awarded for extracurricular Jewish educational experiences such as congregation Hebrew/religious schools, day and overnight Jewish camping, Jewish youth leadership training, and Israel experience/study programs. Special programs include the Cohen Passport ($500 grants for college students); the Meizner Passport (for students with special needs) and the Baim Passport (for unaffiliated students participating in the BJE TIES trip).
Passports are not available for Jewish day school tuition - please contact the schools directly about tuition assistance. Everything is available online – we’ve “gone green” to save costs and the environment. Visit www.jewishorangecounty.org/passport for eligibility, guidelines, deadlines and application.

Youth and Teen ProgramsNearly all of our community congrega-tions have programming for youth and teens; many programs (NFTY, USY, etc.) are affiliated with national movements. See the Congregations & Rabbis pages in the Jewish Living section. In addition, JFFS Community Partners offer outstand-ing programs for youth and teens:
Since 1978, the Bureau of Jewish Education has been committed to one goal: cultivating Jewish pride, participa-tion and leadership in southern California teens. The Bureau’s programs for 9th to 12th graders are TALIT Nation (weekend camp retreats), Jewbilation (Saturday night social events), Social Action Sundays, and TIES (Teen Israel Experience Summer). High school stu-dents can also sign up for the Bureau’s advanced leadership programs which
include Young Philanthropists, run in partnership with the Jewish Community Foundation. YP gives teens first-hand experience in charitable giving and grant-making. The Bureau’s programs for 3rd to 8th graders are the Community Shabbaton (camp retreat), Jr. Jewbilation (social) and Mitzvah Mania (social action).

The merage Jewish Community Center’s flagship youth program is the JCC Maccabi Experience. Every summer, hun-dreds of Orange County teens join thousands of fellow Jews from around the world in three fun-filled locations for the Maccabi Games, a week-long Olympic-style sports competition; Maccabi ArtsFest, an arts extravaganza for young Jewish artists; and JCC Maccabi Israel, the program that brings teens to Israel to explore and experience their Jewish homeland. Each program also gives teens the chance to give something back to their communities through Days of Caring and Sharing. The Merage JCC also has a wealth of exciting after-school programs for children and teens.

The rose Project, a Connect 2 Leadership Initiative of JFFS, was established in 2008 to support and advance the Jewish experience on university campuses in Orange County, to empower Jewish student leaders to be knowledgeable and self-sufficient; to educate and train students about the facts and myths of Israel; and to foster open communication with the broader Orange County community. The Rose Project engages students and community members in positive advocacy through respectful dialogue, and pro-vides significant philanthropic support to a wide range of endeavors on our college and university campuses.
Since its establishment, the Rose Project has provided 174 pro-gram grants and scholarships totaling some $394,000; has increased Taglit-Birthright israel participation by over 160 stu-dents; and has provided 363 student opportunities in Israel education, leadership and advocacy programs. The Rose Report, the Project’s groundbreaking publication, was released in early 2011 and is available at the website listed below.
Hillel Foundation of orange County is a vibrant organization dedicated to enriching the lives of Jewish undergraduate and gradu-ate students so that they may enrich the Jewish People and the world. Orange County Hillel offers a home away from home for Orange County undergraduate and graduate college students, offering a wide variety of programs including Shabbat services and kosher dinners, in-home-Shabbats, holiday celebrations, Taglit-Birthright Israel trips, leadership opportunities, and religious, social and community ser-vice programs. Hillel strives to provide students with the resources and programs they need to thrive as future Jewish leaders and com-munity members. Last year, Hillel opened the doors to the Hillel Center across the street from UC Irvine, where students can gather, meet, hold events and just be Jewish in a warm and inviting setting.
Chabad on Campus provides a home away from home to all univer-sity and college Jewish students regardless of background or obser-vance level. Chabad on Campus offers weekly Shabbat dinners and a wealth of social, educational and religious programs. A unique quality of Chabad on Campus centers is the leadership provided by a dynamic couple who create an atmosphere where students can feel safe and seek guidance on variety of Jewish life issues.

young leadership division conferences and missions are a powerful experience of shared learning, professional growth and personal commitment. Participants return from gatherings – such as TribeFest, the National Young Leadership Cabinet Retreat, the Summer Mission, as well as Study Missions – with stronger bonds to one another, to Israel and to our community. Thanks to a pacesetting commitment from a YLD member, subsidies are available to YLD members (ages 21-45).

“in preserving our past, we create our future.”What is known today as Orange County began over 150 years ago as an agricul-tural experiment by two Jewish German immigrants, Charles Kohler and John Frohling, who were in business together as liquor merchants. On February 24, 1857, Kohler and Frohling convened a meeting in San Francisco to create the Los Angeles Vineyard Society, specifically to grow grapes in what was then Los Angeles County, for the rapidly expanding California wine industry. The partners recruited 50 investors for what would become the town of Anaheim. Most of the original settlers were fellow Germans, and a good amount were Jewish as well.
In 1858, Benjamin Dreyfus, a Bavarian Jew, opened a store in Anaheim in antici-pation of this new community. He was the first Jew to actually set foot in what would eventually become Orange County. By 1881, B. Dreyfus & Company was the largest winery in the state of California and Ben Dreyfus was the mayor of Anaheim. Documents from this era tell us that a tailor named Morris Mendelson conducted High Holy Day services in the home of Bernard Cohen, who operated an Anaheim meat market; they note the first circumci-sion - that of the son of Louis Wartenberg, Anaheim’s first Jewish town marshal; and they inform us that the Anaheim Hebrew
Cemetery Association was formed by five men, including Morris Mendelson.
On August 1, 1889, Orange County was offi-cially formed. As the 20th century dawned, Jewish Orange County continued to grow. The 1909 Queen of the Santa Ana Products Carnival (now the Orange County Fair) was a young Jewish beauty, Gertrude Asher. In 1914 Morris Nasatir aquired a Torah, and his son’s bar mitzvah, as well as Shabbat and High Holiday services, were held in his home in Santa Ana. By the 1930s, Jewish life in Orange County was centered in Santa Ana.
In 1943, the first congregation, Temple Beth Sholom (Reform) was established in Santa Ana, and within two years had acquired its own building on Bush Street, making it the first Jewish institution in Orange County to have its own premises.
Jewish Federation was officially incorporated in Orange County in 1965. Two years later, Hillel was started, and in 1970, Women’s Philanthropy (then known as “Women’s Division”) was formed. For the first six years, Jewish Federation was run by volun-teers, and in 1971, Federation hired its first executive director and opened its first office in North Tustin. By 1991, the Baker Street Jewish Community Campus had opened in Costa Mesa, thanks to a pacesetting donation of land and building by Allan Fainbarg and Arnold Feuerstein.
The Samueli Jewish Campus opened in 2004. This 40 acre property houses both the Tarbut V’Torah Day School and the Merage Jewish Community Center, one of the country’s largest JCCs, and is home to many Orange County Jewish organizations, including what is known today as Jewish Federation & Family Services.
Founded in 1999, the Orange County Jewish Historical Society is responsible for increas-ing the awareness of the role Jews have played in the development of Orange County from 1858, when the first Jew settled in Anaheim, to the present. Dalia Taft, the archivist, lectures regularly about the differ-ent significant periods in Orange County’s Jewish History, and publishes a monthly column in Orange County Jewish Life high-lighting images from the Society’s archives. The organization has also produced the well-received documentary California Orange Jews: The Story of the Jews of Orange County, which has played in international film festivals and is available for screenings.

The israel Center of JFFS is the bridge that connects our OC Jewish commu-nity with Israel through these exciting endeavors:
• israel Expo is our signature com-munity-wide event, held each spring and attended by thousands of com-munity members. It’s an afternoon of fun, food and festivity for all ages, with fabulous shopping, informative interactive exhibits and exciting enter-tainment.
• Our israeli sister communities – the city of Kiryat malachi and the surrounding rural Ashkelon Coast region – offer exciting opportuni-ties to visit, volunteer, adopt projects, create b’nai mitzvah connections, and so much more. Every summer, our sister communities send Israeli Youth Ambassadors to OC.
grant support for projects in our sister communities is provided by donors to the Connect 2 Israel Initiative. Locally, JFFS Program Grants support Shevet Tapuz (the Israeli Scouts) and Israel program-ming by our congregations.
• Taglit-Birthright israel is the gift of a lifetime – a free 10-day trip for young adults -- made possible by global funding partners includ-ing JFFS. Trip options include the Hillel Explore Israel Campus Trip (for students 18-26), and Taglit-Birthright Israel: The OC Way (for OC young professionals and students, 21-26). If you are Jewish and have never been on an organized peer-group trip to Israel, Taglit-Birthright Israel is the program for you.

Our tradition and practice gives meaning to the crucial points in our lives.
mezuzah“You shall write them upon the doorposts of your home and your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:9 11:19 A mezuzah mounted on the doorpost designates a home as Jewish, reminding us of our connection to G-d and to our heritage. A mezuzah is not, contrary to popular belief, the outer container. The mezuzah is actually the parchment scroll within, on which the “Shema” (a biblical passage declaring the oneness of G-d) is handwritten by an expert scribe. The placing of a mezuzah on the doors of a home or office protects the inhab-itants, whether they are inside or outside.• Purchase a mezuzah case at your con-
gregation gift shop, at the Golden Dreidle or at one of the many online Jewish shopping resources.
• For a kosher mezuzah scroll and the blessing, consult your rabbi.
marriageWeddings mark the beginning of a new Jewish family. Traditionally, they are held under a chuppah (canopy), and some hold weddings under the open sky. Traditional wedding practices include fasting by the couple (as it is considered a ‘personal Yom Kippur’ and all their sins are forgiven), veil-ing of the bride, standing under the chuppah,
where a ring is (or rings are) presented and the ketubah (wedding contract) is read, and recitation of seven blessings. At the end of the ceremony, a glass is broken, symbolizing that even in our moments of greatest joy we remember the painful moments of Jewish history. Talk to a rabbi to learn more!
mikvahThe Torah instructs us to immerse our-selves in the living waters of the mikvah, the Jewish ritual bath, at times of transition from one spiritual state to another (for example, upon conversion, before a wedding, before Shabbat). • The Orange County Mikvah is at 19045

sible after birth. A mohel should be engaged to do the brit milah (bris), the circumcision. As experts they perform many a week and have the experience and knowledge of tradi-tions. Many Jews have a “Shalom Zachar” (literally “peace to the young boy”) celebra-tion the Friday night before the brit milah. A meal is served at the brit milah and many have the tradition of sponsoring a Kiddush at services in honor of a new daughter.• Find a mohel at mohelusa.com or

See our Congregation & Rabbis section. There are also numerous interfaith resources online, the most com-prehensive of which is interfaithfamily.com.

three: the age of educationAt three, the age of Jewish education begins. Young girls begin to light one Shabbat can-dle every Friday night with their mothers. Some Jews cut the hair of their sons for the first time on their 3rd birthday, marking the beginning of the educational process. Boys begin to wear kippot (yarmulkes) at age three.
Bar/Bat mitzvahChildren become adults, in the eyes of Jewish law, when a boy reaches the age of thirteen, and a girl reaches the age of twelve (in Conservative and Orthodox Judaism) or thirteen (as practiced in Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism as a sign of equal-ity). From that point on, they are obligated in the fulfillment of the commandments. We celebrate this milestone with reading the Torah, beginning to observe the com-mandments and a celebratory meal. Many children also take on a “mitzvah project” – a volunteer or fundraising activity – to dem-onstrate their commitment to Jewish com-munity service.Jewish Federation & Family Services has a wealth of ideas for B’nai Mitzvah boys and
girls, including projects that partner them with our sister communities in Israel. Email [email protected] for more.“Mitzvah Mania,” sponsored by the Bureau of Jewish Education, is a free program held annually for 6th graders and their parents to discover unique sources for B’nai Mitzvah project ideas, meet teen “Mitzvah Makers” and learn how they’ve made a difference, and more! More at bjeoc.org.
tallit and tzitzitThere is a biblical command to attach fringes to the corners of four-cornered garments, such as the tallit (prayer shawl). The strings and knots of the fringe tassels are called tzitzit, and are a physical representation of the Torah’s 613 do’s and don’ts.

end of life
Jewish tradition teaches us that we should bury our loved ones. The mitzvah is called chessed shel emet: a true kindness. Immediate family sit shiva, a week of mourning (shiva is the Hebrew word for seven). During this time, they abstain from formal work and celebrations, and cover the mirrors in their homes. Friends and family visit them and conduct services in the home. A tombstone may be erected any time after the week of shiva is completed. Some do so right away; others wait for the first yahrzeit (anniversary of the passing). It is customary to give charity and to learn Torah in the memory of a loved one.

Commemorating G-d’s day of rest after six days of creation, Shabbat begins on Friday evening. Traditions include lighting candles, drinking wine and eating challah (braided bread) and attending services on Friday night or Saturday morning.
The Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony is a central feature of Shabbat morning services. Shabbat ends 25 hours after the candle lighting times listed below. Havdalah, the farewell ceremony to Shabbat, takes place upon the appearance of three stars in the Saturday night sky and is celebrated by lighting a braided candle, drinking wine and smelling sweet spices.
Shabbat Candlelighting
It is considered a great mitzvah and responsibility to honor the Sabbath by lighting candles 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening. At least two candles are lit, representing the dual commandment to

remember and to keep the Sabbath. This unique commandment, entrusted to the Jewish woman, is rich with meaning and purpose: she circles her hands over the candles, in an inward direction, welcoming the light and joy of Shabbat into her life and surroundings. She covers her eyes and recites the blessing:
Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh haolam, asher kideshanu be-mitzvotav vitzevanu, le-hadlik ner shel Shabbat (Amen).
Blessed are you, Lord our G-d, King of the Universe, who sanctifies us with His commandments and has commanded us to kindle the Sabbath lights (Amen).
Times listed are for Irvine 92603. For candle lighting times in other communities, visit one of the online resources, which include www.chabad.org, www.uscj.org and others, click on candle lighting and enter your zipcode.

Where candle lighting times are not noted, observance of holidays is from sundown to sundown, beginning on the evening prior to the date listed.
2011
yom haShoah (holocaust remembrance day) Monday, May 2
Yom HaShoah is a day of mourning for the 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. In Israel, a siren’s blast allows collective remembrance in a moment of silence. In Orange County, two commemorative ceremonies are held. At the Samueli Jewish Campus, the observance is co-presented by the Israel Center of Jewish Federation & Family Services, the Israeli Scouts and the Persian Committee of JFFS. In addition, there is an annual observance at the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education at Chapman University in Orange, which takes place on April 28, 2011.
yom hazikaron (israeli remembrance day) Monday, May 9
On Yom HaZikaron, we remember all who sacrificed their lives for the state of Israel in armed conflict, and the people who have fallen in terror attacks. The annual remembrance ceremony in Orange County is presented by the Israeli Scouts in partnership with the Israel Center of Jewish Federation & Family Services.
yom ha’atzmaut (israeli independence day) Tuesday, May 10
On the 5th of the Jewish month of Iyar (which was May 14, 1948 on the Gregorian calendar), Israel was declared an independent state. Today, Jews all over the world celebrate the birth of Israel with parades, festivals, and donations to Jewish charities. In Orange County, we celebrate Israel’s birthday each year at Israel Expo, a free community-wide celebration, which takes place on Sunday, May 22nd, 2011, which is also Lag B’Omer.
lag B’Omer (thirty-third day of the Omer) Sunday, May 22
A break in the weeks of mourning between Passover and Shavuot, this holiday traditionally commemorates a halt in the plague that afflicted Rabbi Akiva’s students in ancient Israel. The holiday is celebrated with picnics and bonfires.
yom yerushalayim (Jerusalem day) Wednesday, June 1
Jerusalem Day is an Israeli national holiday celebrating the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967. It is also a memorial day in Israel for some four thousand Ethiopian Jews who died before reaching Jerusalem during Operation Moses and Operation Solomon.
Shavuot (Festival of weeks) Light candles on Tuesday, June 7 at 7:41pm
Light candles on Wednesday, June 8 after 8:43pm
Holiday ends on Thursday, June 9 at 8:44pm
Shavuot is celebrated seven weeks after Passover to commemorate the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, and the spring harvest. Traditionally, Jews read the Ten Commandments and the Book of Ruth, and eat dairy products. Religious school confirmation ceremonies often take place at this time.
tisha B’av (ninth of av) Tuesday, August 9
The ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av is a day of fasting and mourning and prayer commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples, both of which took place on this day, 656 years apart.
tu B’av (Fifteenth of av) Monday, August 15
An ancient and modern holiday, Tu B’Av is noted in the Talmud as a matchmaking day for unmarried women in the Second Temple Period. Celebration of Tu B’Av has been rejuvenated in recent decades, particularly in Israel, as a holiday of love.
rosh hashanah (Jewish new year) Light candles on Wednesday, September 28 at 6:23pm
Light candles on Thursday, September 29 after 7:16pm
Holiday ends as Shabbat comes in Friday, September 30 at 6:20pm
The beginning of the Jewish year, Rosh Hashanah is a festive celebration during which individuals contemplate past, present and future actions. Traditional foods include round challah and apples with honey, symbolizing wholeness and sweetness for the New Year.
yom Kippur (day of atonement) Light candles on Friday, October 7 at 6:10pm
Holiday ends on Motzei Shabbat, October 8 at 7:04pm
The holiest day of the Jewish year. Through fasting and prayer, Jews reflect upon their relationships with other people and with G-d, atoning for wrongdoings and failures to take the right action. The sounding of the shofar (ram’s horn) at sunset signals the end of the holiday.
Sukkot (Festival of Booths) Light candles on Wednesday, October 12 at 6:04pm
Light candles on Thursday, October 13 after 6:58pm
Holiday ends as Shabbat comes in Friday, October 14 at 6:01pm
Sukkot commemorates the fulfillment of G-d’s promise to bring the Israelites to the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering. Many people erect a sukkah (booth), a temporary structure with a roof made of branches, modeled after makeshift huts constructed in the desert in ancient times.
Shemini atzeret (eight days of assembly) Light candles on Wednesday, October 19 at 5:55pm
Celebrated immediately after Sukkkot and thus sometimes considered an extension of the holiday, Shemini Atzeret culminates the celebration of renewal and thanksgiving. This day marks the first time tefillat geshem (prayer for rain) is recited during services, a practice that continues until Passover.
Simchat torah (rejoicing in the torah) Light candles on Thursday, October 20 after 6:50pm
Holiday ends as Shabbat comes in Friday, October 21 at 5:53pm
Simchat Torah celebrates the completion of the annual Torah-reading cycle. After finishing the last sentence of the book Devarim (Deuteronomy), the Torah is joyously paraded seven times around the congregation. The new cycle begins immediately with a reading from Bereshit (Genesis).
hanukkah (Festival of lights) Tuesday night, December 20 (first candle) through Wednesday evening, December 28 (end of 8th day)
Hanukkah commemorates the Jewish victory over the armies of the Syrian-Greek emperor Antiochus, who outlawed Jewish observance some 2,200 years ago. The eight-day holiday is celebrated by lighting candles in a Hanukkiah (a nine-branched menorah), eating latkes (potato pancakes) and giving Hanukkah gelt (chocolate coins) as well as gifts.

If you live in Orange County and keep kosher (or want to!), the available resources for take-out, cook-it-yourself or a hotel ban-quet are growing as fast as our community, and making it easier than ever! “There is a marked growth in kosher observance,” said Rabbi David Eliezrie of North County Chabad in Orange County Jewish Life. “A decade ago there was no kosher market in Orange County. Now Trader Joe’s is carrying kosher chicken and meat, and The Coffee Bean is certified kosher.”
what does kosher mean?
Visit www.chabad.org/kosher for a 15-step wizard on eating Jewishly.
how can you ensure that a facility or product is truly kosher?
Rabbi Eliezrie says that unlike a business that needs to be licensed to open its doors, any establishment can call itself kosher with impunity. “If somebody wakes up on a Monday morning and decides to say his place is kosher, he can claim what he wants. It doesn’t make it kosher.” Kosher certifica-tion must be determined by an Orthodox rabbinical council or organization.
The most well-known and largest certifica-tion organization is the Orthodox Union, whose famous “OU” logo (a U in a circle) is now seen on more than 400,000 products
around the world. OU certification indicates “that a product may be consumed by all who observe kosher dietary laws, as well as by oth-ers with special dietary requirements, such as Muslims and Seventh Day Adventists. It also serves as a guide to millions of individu-als who are vegetarian or lactose intolerant.”
There is also the “OK” kosher certification standard (a “K” in a circle is the logo), which was started in 1935 and provides certification for food giants like Kraft, Tropicana, Keebler, and the Miller Brewing Company. OK certi-fies more than 114,000 products produced by more than 1500 companies.
The OU and OK set kosher standards and certify food products that meet them, but they don’t go to restaurants or hotels to oversee that food preparation adheres to kosher requirements. This service is pro-vided locally by the Rabbinical Council of Orange County, a team of five rabbis who set the policy for OC restaurants, food stores and hotels. There are other rabbis involved in day-to-day issues, like the Mashgichim who supervise kosher food preparation to the public or act as consultants. The Mashgichim get paid for their time at an event, but other-wise the rabbis do this work gratis. Says Rabbi Eliezrie, “We do it because we want to insure the local community has high-quality Kosher catering available.” The Rabbinical Council also oversees the OC Kosher market in Tustin, the JCC Cafe in Irvine and others.
