Entering his 28th seasonas head coach at the

University of Kentucky,Don Weber has seenNCAA Champions, All-America honors, Confer-ence Champions and acad-emic honors. Overall, hehas dedicated his time and

passion over the past 34 years including theseven seasons Weber served as head crosscountry coach and as an assistant coach fortrack and field. Weber has built Kentucky intothe prestigious program that it is today.

A veteran to the Southeastern Conference,Weber’s coaching tenure at UK is the longestamong his peers in the league. Weber hasspearheaded track and field and cross countryat UK since 1984, and under his direction,the program has become a staple at thenational championships.

National success quickly followed afterWeber was elevated to direct the program. His1985 women’s cross country team finishedfourth at the NCAA Championships. TheWildcats improved the following year with athird-place national finish, leading up to hiscrowning achievement.

In 1988, Weber guided the UK women’scross country team to the NCAA NationalChampionship title. At the same nationalchampionship event, the men’s team finishedeighth. In 1989, the women’s squad returnedto the championship as the national runner-up. In 2008, Weber helped guide a new gener-ation to the national stage as the women’steam made its fifth postseason appearance atthe NCAA Championships.

In recognition of the Wildcats’ success on

the cross country course, Weber was namedNCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. Prior to that,he was honored as NCAA District III Coach ofthe Year in 1985. In both of those years, he alsoreceived the SEC Men’s Cross Country Coachof the Year. Weber has been named SECWomen’s Coach of the Year three times (1985,1988 and 1989) and was Men’s Indoor Trackand Field Coach of the Year in 1995.

After more than two decades at the helm ofthe Kentucky program, Weber’s athletes haveearned 187 NCAA All-America honors and sixWildcats have won 10 NCAA individualnational championships. He has also coacheda total of 106 SEC individual champions.During Weber’s tenure at Kentucky, Wildcatcross country and track and field athletes haveconsistently been named to the SEC AcademicHonor Roll.

Weber’s prolific coaching career stems fromhis vast experience as a Kentucky athlete andformer SEC Champion. As a student-athlete,Weber participated in track and cross country atUK from 1968-72. In 1970, he helped his teamto the SEC Cross Country Championship,which led to an All-SEC honor in cross country.Weber also received All-SEC honors in indoortrack from 1968-72. He was the SEC 1,000-yard champion in 1972, establishing a then-conference record with a time of 2:10.20.Weber received the UK Athletic LeadershipAward the same year. In addition to all of hishonors and records, he was named captain ofboth the cross country and track squads.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree fromUK in education in 1973, he began his coach-ing career at Jesse Stuart High School inLouisville. Following two successful years at thehigh school level, he entered the collegiate ranks

as an assistant cross country and track and fieldcoach at Murray State University in Murray, Ky.While coaching the Racers, Weber earned amaster’s degree in secondary education.

In 1975, the Concentracion Deportiva dePinchincha (the Sports Committee of theEcuadorian State of Pichincha) selected Weberas the National and Olympic Track and FieldCoach and to guide the team at the MontrealSummer Games. Following the 1976Olympics, Weber returned to the UnitedStates to serve as the assistant coach at Pitts-burg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.,before joining the coaching staff at his almamater in 1978.

Weber has also authored several articles ondistance running. He and his wife Camille havethree adult children: Jennifer, Katie and Robbie.

• UK track & field athletes have won 221NCAA All-America honors, including 50 in thelast five years.

• Seven UK athletes have won 11 individualNCAA National Championships, includingRashaud Scott’s 2008 title in men’s discus.

• UK has had three athletes earn United StatesOlympic Team berths on four occasions: 1988,1992, 1996 and 2000. In addition five athleteshave earned international Olympic Team berthson two occasions: 2004 and 2008.

• UK has won seven Southeastern Conferencecross country team titles, an NCAA Cross Coun-try Championship, a runner-up, third-, fourth-,eighth-, 11th- and 12th-place NCAA national fin-ishes.

• UK has five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Track& Field Championships and 11 top-20 finishes,including the Wildcat men’s ninth-place finish atthe 2008 Outdoor Championships.

• UK has produced “Championship of America”relay teams in both the prestigious Penn Relaysand the Drake Relays.

• UK has been consistently ranked nationally inthe middle-distance relays.

• The track and field teams have had three femalesand three males recognized as UK Athletes of theYear, two of which were repeat honors.

• Seven middle distance athletes qualified for the2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, more than any otherteam in the nation in the 800 and 1,500 meters.

• Ten representatives of UK track and field tookpart in 2008 Olympic trials across North andSouth America.

Thomas Morgan, for-mer University of

Kentucky student-athleteand 2003 SoutheasternConference cross-countrychampion, is entering hissecond season as assistantcoach of distance eventswith UK.

“I am thrilled to haveThomas returning to UK as my assistant coach,”said head coach Don Weber one year ago. “He’snot only returning to UK, but his hometown ofLexington as well. As a former UK athlete Iknow how meaningful the opportunity to coachat UK was to me, and I am certain it is mean-ingful to Thomas.

“In 30 years of coaching at UK, Thomas wasone of our all-time success stories as a studentand as an athlete, so bringing him back into theprogram is very exciting, rewarding and comfort-ing to me. Thomas will be a great role model forour athletes. He started his UK career with mod-est athletic credentials, but based on who he is,he developed into one of the nation’s very bestcollegiate distance runners while simultaneouslyexcelling in the classroom.”

Morgan joins Kentucky after a five-year stintwith the Zap Fitness Foundation, Inc., as a pro-fessional athlete and support staff member.

While at Zap Fitness, he traveled to countlessdomestic competitions of all levels and took fivetrips to Europe, meeting many influential figuresin the track and field community. As a supportstaff member and camp counselor, Morgan pro-vided support in hosting running camps thatincluded speaking to groups of up to 500 peopleon running-related topics such as nutrition,lifestyle, mental strategies and racing experiences.

"I consider it a great privilege to return to theinstitution that provided me so many opportuni-ties, both athletically and academically,” Morgansaid. “I am looking forward to providing thatsame opportunity to the current student-athletesand fostering an environment of success."

In 2004 and 2008, Morgan qualified andparticipated in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the5,000-meter run as a member of Zap Fitness.Using the experience gained in 2004, Morganhad his best performance at the trials in 2008when he placed 10th in the 5,000m run with atime of 13:47.76. Also in 2008, he finishedranked in the top-100 5,000m runners in theworld and seventh-fastest American with a timeof 13:27.45.

While at the University of Kentucky, Morganwas a two-time All-America honoree for his per-formance in the distance medley relay in 2001and 2003. The former Wildcat student-athletewas also a five-time All-SEC performer, twice in

cross country, once in indoor track and twice foroutdoor track. He was a seven-time NCAAChampionship qualifier as well, twice in crosscountry, three times in indoor track and twiceduring the outdoor season. Morgan broke a 32-year-old school record in the 5,000m run duringhis final outdoor season at Kentucky with a timeof 13:45.57. He stands in the top five in threeevents, and the top 10 in three other events inthe Kentucky record books, including first in theoutdoor 5,000m, third in the indoor 3,000m,fourth in the indoor 5,000m, sixth in the indoormile, sixth in the outdoor 1,500m and sixth inthe 3,000m steeplechase.

Morgan graduated in May 2003 from theUniversity of Kentucky with a bachelor of busi-ness administration in finance and later a mas-ters of business administration in 2005.

The 2010 campaign was a learning experi-ence for a young University of Kentucky men’scross country team. Led by a trio of underclass-men in sophomore Luis Orta, junior JoshNadzam and freshman Stacey Eden, the Wild-cats earned two top-five team finishes andadvanced to the NCAA Southeast Regional.

The Wildcats got off to a strong start, fin-ishing in second place at the San Francisco Invi-tational in the season’s first meet. Orta led theway for Kentucky, running the 8K race in a timeof 24:52 to finish in first place and later earnSoutheastern Conference Freshman Runner ofthe Week honors. Junior Walter Luttrell finished

second on the team and in fifth place overallwith a time of 25:06. Nadzam, Eden and AdamKahleifeh finished in third, fourth and fifthplace on the team, respectively.

Two weeks later, the Wildcats headed northto compete in New York at the Iona CollegeMeet of Champions. Orta, a native of Caracas,Venezuela, had another strong performance, fin-ishing in fifth place overall with a time of25:20.47. As a team, Kentucky finished in 10thplace out of the 19 teams competing.

In a race much closer to home, Kentuckycompeted in Louisville, Ky., at the GreaterLouisville Classic against37 other schools. Led byOrta, who finished firston the team in five of thesix races the Wildcatscompeted in, Kentuckyfinished in 19th place.Despite his freshmanstanding, Eden recordedthe second fastest timeon the team for the sec-ond-straight race.

Kentucky closed outthe regular season sched-ule with a fourth placefinish at the Blue RidgeOpen. Orta led the waywith a time of 24:49.30on the 8K course inBoone, N.C., finishingin second place overall.Nadzam recorded his sec-ond top-20 time of the

season with a 19th-place mark.Eden led the Wildcats in the Southeastern

Conference Championship. It was the first timethe freshman had recorded the fastest time onthe team in a race. Kentucky finished in eighthplace overall at the meet.

Heading into the NCAA Southeast Regionalin Louisville, Ky., Eden rose to the occasion withthe best time on the team in the 10K event.Nadzam finished in second on the team, fol-lowed by Heenan, Orta and Matt Wagner. TheWildcat men finished in 21st place out of 34teams with 572 points.

The University of Kentucky women’s crosscountry team faced adversity during the 2010season, but overcame it with teamwork andstrong camaraderie. Sophomore Chelsea Oswald,who was named to the 2009 Southeastern Con-ference All-Freshman team and All-SEC SecondTeam, went down with an injury prior to theseason’s third race and missed half of the season.Despite the injury, the Wildcats continued toperform well and advanced to the NCAA South-east Regional in Louisville, Ky.

Oswald, a native of Medina, Ohio, came outof the gates storming. In Kentucky’s first meet of

the season at the San Francisco Invitational,Oswald finished in second place overall with atime of 17:26 at the 5K course. Kentucky, as ateam, finished in second place out of the nineteams competing with 39 points. Oswald wasn’tthe only person who excelled at the San Francis-co Invitational, though, as Taylor Wendler, AnnaBostrom and Cally Macumber finished in sev-enth, eighth and ninth place overall, respectively.

Two weeks later at the Iona College Meet ofChampions, Oswald one-upped herself with afirst-place finish, leading the Wildcats to a teamwin over the 17 other schools competing at themeet. Oswald ran the 6K course in a time of21:41.68, followed by Wendler’s seventh-placetime of 22:18.36 and Macumber’s 11th-placefinish.

Competing back inthe Bluegrass State at theGreater Louisville Classicon Oct. 2, the Wildcatsrecorded a ninth placefinish out of 35 teams.Wendler led the way forUK with a 28th placefinish at the 5K course,running a time of17:43.11.

Kentucky was led byWendler and Bostrom,who each earned top 25times, at the Blue RidgeOpen. As a team, theWildcats finished in sev-enth place.

Macumber, a sopho-more from RochesterHills, Mich., stepped upat the end of the season,leading the Wildcats at

the SEC Championship and NCAA SoutheastRegional. Macumber finished in 13th place over-all at the conference championship meet, earn-ing All-SEC second team honors. Wendler andBostrom each earned SEC All-Freshman honorsfor finishing in the top-seven among freshmen atthe meet.

The Wildcats finished in 14th place at theNCAA Southeast Regional. Macumber pacedKentucky at the 6k course with a time of21:58.37, followed by Bostrom and Oswald,who returned from injuries to compete in theyear’s final race. Kentucky finished with 439points in the meet featuring 37 teams.
