HEAD COACH SCOTT PICKLER

One of the most respectedveteran community collegecoaches in the nation, Scott

Picklerhadanothersuccessfulyearin2010headingtotheSuperRegionals.Pickler,inhis27thyeardirectingtheChargers,hasledCypresstofourstatechampionships (1991, 1994, 1997,2003) and four runner-up finishes(1996,1999,2004,2007).Pickler,whoserved as a coach for the 1995 USABaseballNationalTrials,hasacareerwinningpercentageof.671(825-404-4).HealsohascoachedfornineyearsintheprestigiousCapeCodSummerLeague. In 2004, 2006, and 2007 heledtheYarmouth-DennisRedSoxtotheCapeCodLeagueTitle. Pickler took over a strugglingCypressprogramin1985andquicklyturnedtheChargersintoarespectedCalifornia powerhouse. He has beenchosen the National Coach of theYear for California Junior Collegesfourtimes. With all of his professional ac-complishments, Pickler’s biggest vic-tories and proudest moments comewhen he sees his athletes move tofour-yearcollegesanduniversitiesortheprofessionalranks.Over200stu-dent-athletes have received scholar-ships,and120plusplayershavebeen

selectedintheMa-jor League Draft.There have been15 former Chargers who have beenbroughtuptotheMajorsinPickler’stenure including seven who are cur-rentlyactive. Before coming to Cypress, Pick-ler had an outstanding high schoolcoaching career. In six seasons atSavanna and Loara high schools, heposted a combined record of 123-36 and won the CIFchampionship withhis1983Loarasquad.Picklerisa1968grad-uateofSavannaHighwinning Athlete oftheYearrecognition.He attended CypressCollege and earnedall-conferencerecog-nition under CoachLarry Mercadante.He earned a degreein physical educa-tion from San DiegoState University andplayed second basefortheAztecs. Scott and hiswifeSharonhavetwochildren:Jeff(34)andKari(30).Jeffwasanall-conferencechoiceforhisdadatCypressin 1995 and thenwentontobeanAll-American and AllAcademic American

attheUniversityofTennessee.KariisagraduateofUCLAandwasaBru-ins Song Leader. She has performedon Broadway in the musical “Big”,andcurrentlyworksfortheMobilitie.Pickler’syoungerbrotherBrad is theheadcoachofthesoftballteamatCy-pressandhasledtheChargerstofivestatechampionships.

tor starting with the Chargers in 1985. AnAll-AmericacatcherattheUniversityofSanDiego,Pinkhamspecializesinworkingwith

theChargerbackstops.Pinkhamwasasec-ondrounddraftchoiceoftheTorontoBlueJays.PinkhamlivesinYorbaLindawithhiswife Debi. They have four children: Kate,Stephanie,Brett,andMolly.

onship player on the 2003 State Champi-onship Charger squad, Mahoney comes totheChargersaftergainingsomeexperiencecoachingwithPicklerintheCapeCodSum-

mer League the past two seasons winningthechampionshipin2004,2006,and2007.AsaCharger,Mahoneybatted .436duringthe championship season. After Cypress,Mahoney moved on to the University ofSouthDakotaandthenHuronUniversity.

Started in June of 2000 with Cypress toleadthesummerteamwithBillPinkham.

Epstein’s main responsibilities are coach-ing the outfielders and directing the club’sstrengthandconditioningprogram.Healsokeepsaneyeontheplayers’progressinthe

classroom. Epstein came to Cypress afterretiring froma successful16yearmanage-mentcareeratUPS.EpsteinisagraduateofRedlandsandSavannaHighSchool.Helivesin Mission Viejo with his wife Laura andsonsZachandMax.

TONY FELICIONEAssistantCoach

2ndSeason

Felicione is no stranger to communitycollege baseball serving on the staffs of

Ohlone(2002-04)andLAHarbor(1993-98).Hehasearnedtwostatefinalistfinishes,onewitheachteam,twoSuperRegionalCham-

pionships,nineregionalchampionships,andoneSouthCoastConferenceChampionship.Felicione was a standout for Long BeachStateasa3rdTeamAll-AmericanandanAllBigWestselection.

TAYLOR CAMERONAssistantCoach

2ndSeason

CameronreturnstoCypressafterplayingwith the Chargers in 2004. Cameron

coached with Scott Pickler as the PitchingCoachfortheYDRedSoxintheCapeCodLeague.Cameronwillserveasthepitchingcoach for Cypress. After playing one year

with the Chargers, Cameron moved on toPoint Loma Nazarene where he finishedfifthalltimeinwinsandstrikeouts.Hewasdraftedin2007bythePittsburghPiratesandplayedIndependentBaseballin2008.

We reached the Super Re-gionals again in 2010;hopefullywecanplayone

moreweekendin2011.Forustoplaythat extra weekend our youth andinexperience will have to grow upquick.Wehaveagoodmixoffresh-man and sophomores and we feelgood about our club regarding workethicandchemistry.Thecompetitiontoperformshouldbringthebestoutof each player. Coach Cameron wasimpressedwithourFallsaying,“Theygot after it this Fall and learned tocompete.” We will have a couple sopho-mores that will have to step up andtake leadership roles starting withBryan Aanderud who played a lotforusasafreshmanonasophomoredominatedsquad.Heisayoungmanwhogivesusalotofversatilityintheinfield, can play some outfield, andhitsinthemiddleofourlineup.JoeyBoneywillbeakeytooursuccessashewillplayinthemiddleofthedia-mond;hopefullyhewillliveuptotheexcellence of many former Cypressshortstops. At first base there is acompetition between redshirt fresh-man Jake Clark from Norco highschoolandJordanGeiger.Bothkidswillseetimeonthemoundaswell.AtsecondbasewefeelreallygoodaboutRobertChavarriafromMarinaHighSchool. He is a guy who can reallyhit,hasaverygoodglove,andmakesour lineup better. Chavarria will bepushed by a kid from Cherry CreekHighSchoolinColoradonamedMax

Price who has shown the coachingstaffthathecanplayatourlevelandWade McConnon a tough baseballplayer.Atthirdbasewehaveatalent-ed freshman from Orange LutherannamedWillieShaw.HeiscompetingwithAanderudbutwillhelpusoutinabigwaythisyearwhereverheplaysandfitsintoourlineup. Wehaveaverycompetitivecom-petition behind the plate with threeguys we feel comfortable going tobattle with. Brad Hartong is a veryathletic 6’4” kid from Los Alamitos,Chase Harrison from Orange Lu-theran who we think will be in ourlineupconsistently, andTannerPer-kinswho isareturningkidwhowillalso find time in some infield spotsandintheoutfieldaswellastheDH.Perkinsstartedsomegamesasafresh-manandexceededexpectations. We have four outfielders thatwefeelverystronglyabout.WehaveArbyFieldswhotransferredinfromNorthwestern University and was atwosportstarinfootballandbaseballand should play centerfield. MannyAlonso, our most consistent hitterin the fall, will provide some quietleadership qualities that every con-tendingteamneedsbylockinginev-erypitchandworkingonandoffthefield.AnthonyRazofromLakewoodandMikeMarcouxfromServitewillalsofindqualitytimeintheoutfieldaswell. Thebiggestshoeswehavetofillare on the mound with five of our

sophomores getting the bulk of ourinnings in 2010 and one freshmanleavingbecauseoftheMLBdraft.AllofthosefiveguyshadscholarshipstoDivisionIprogramswithanotheronedeciding to start his professional ca-reerwiththeTorontoBlueJaysinthe2010 MLB Draft. The pitcher com-ingbackwithmost innings isTravisPitcherwithnineinnings.Wefeelheshoulddogoodthingsonthemoundforusthisseason.ConnorHaddockisanotherpitcherwhowillgetalotofinnings forusalongwith JaredWil-son and Tommy Nance who was atLongBeachStateasafreshman.Twoother guys that we like are interna-tional players Alon Leichman fromIsraelandOscarCarlstedtfromSwe-den. Withalltheinexperienceonthemound, everyone on our staff hasworked extremely hard, and we as astafflookforwardtoseeingtheseguyscompeteonthemoundforusin2011. AsitiseveryyearintheOrangeEmpire Conference, it is going tocomedowntoseeingifourinexperi-encematuresthroughtheupsandthedownsthattheOECcreatesthrough-outtheyear. Ultimatelyitwillcomedowntopitching,defense,andtimelyhitting.Wefeelthatwiththewayourplayers worked this fall and boughtin to our system on the field, in theclassroomandintheweightroomweshould be competitive in the presti-giousOrangeEmpireConference.-ScottPickler

After a 22-14 regular season record,Cypress completed a third straightseasondeepintoplayoffsintheSuperRegionals. Cypress started the seasonstrong in non-conference play. Cy-pressstartedwiththreegamesatCol-legeoftheDesertandwontwobefore

losing the third. The Chargers thenproceededtowinfivestraightinclud-ing a win over Southern Nevada forthe first time since 2006. They fol-lowedwithateninning,one-runlosstonationalpowerhouseChipola.Thelossstartedathreegamelosingstreakbeforebouncingbackjustbeforecon-ferencewitha14-1drubbingofAllanHancock. The Chargers went on the

roadtostartOrangeEmpireConfer-ence action as the defending OECChampionfrom2009. Withatargeton their backs, the Chargers startedconference on a hot streak with fivestraight wins including a 19-5 routof rivalSantaAna. The Chargershosted10thseedCollegeoftheDes-ertinthefirstround.Afterlosing8-7to the Roadrunners, Cypress’s backswereagainstthewallneedingtowintwo straight to survive and advanceto the Super Regionals. The Char-gerscamethrougheliminatingDesertwithtwostraightstrongwinspunch-ing their ticket to theSuperRegion-als. The Chargers were one oftwoOECteamsheadedtotheSuperRegionals heading to headed to fifth

seededElCaminoalongwithAl-lan Hancock and Palomar. Cy-press opened the tournamentwitha5-1losstoAllanHancock.Cypressdropped to theelimina-tionbracketandsurvivedwitha6-5winoverPalomar.TheChar-gersfacedoffagainstAllanHan-cockinforthefourthtimeintheseasonwithbothteams’survivalontheline.Cypressfellshortun-able to come back from a sevenrun deficit losing 7-4 to end theseason. Cypress Community Col-legeboastsawellroundedphysical education cur-

C y p r e s s ,which offers seven sports forwomen and six for men, has hadasolid line-upof teamsand indi-vidual athletes who have excelledsince the college first opened itsdoorsin1966.Inrecentyears,thebaseball, softball, women’s soccerandwomen’sbasketballprograms

havetakencenterstage. In 1997 thebaseball andsoftball squads,coached bybrothers Scottand Brad Pickler,captured statechampionships.The baseball crown was the third

of the 1990s under thedirectionofScottPicklerwhohasover700winsinhis22yearsattheschooland captured the statechampionship again in2003. Trevor Hoffmanof the San Diego Padres,whoplayedatCypressin1986and1987, isa four-

time Major League all-star andholdstheMajorLeaguerecordforcareersaves. Brad Pickler, has also had agreat deal of success. He has ledthe softball team to a record sixstate titles while winning over1,000games.TheChargers werethe first Cali-fornia school tocapture threeconsecutivestatechampionships(1997, 1998,1999).

Cypress only start-ed playing intercolle-giate women’s soccerin 1991, but the lateRayHaasquicklybuiltthe program into aconsistentwinner.TheChargers won StateChampionships in1998, 1999 and 2004.

Cypress’27-0 season in1999wasrewarded with a No. 1 nationalranking by the National SoccerCoachesAssociationofAmerica. Cypress captured its firstwomen’sbasketballchampionshipin 2005. Margaret Mohr’s teamset a school record with 28 wins

againstfivedefeats. Cypress enjoysstrong support fromthe community andstudent body, who arepartofthetraditionallypopular athletic pro-gram.
