WIDE OPEN WTAWIDE OPEN WTAStar power void makes parity the rule on 2011 tourBY GENE [email protected]

P etra Kvitova is not quitea household name, evenamong tennis enthusi-asts. But the 21-year-oldfrom the Czech Republic

is relatively dominant on the WTATour these days. She was the onlyplayer to win two tournament titlesin 2011 until top-ranked CarolineWozniacki caught up with her bycapturing the crown at Indian Wellslast month.

Kvitova has a wonderful, versatilegame and is apt to accomplish manymore good things. But such high-profile distinction for a player cur-rently enjoying a career-high No. 18ranking is indicative of the suddenparity on the WTA Tour.

Unpredictability might be thewomen’s tennis norm, not the excep-tion. This year and beyond.

Serena Williams has not played allyear and suffered a frightening pul-monary embolism in February.

Venus Williams withdrew fromthe Australian Open in the thirdround with a foot injury and with-drew from last month’s tournamentinMiami with nagging abdominal is-sues.

Elena Dementieva, a Family CircleCup favorite once ranked as high asNo. 3, retired in October.

Any of more than a dozen play-ers can win any given tournament, including this Family Circle Cup.A star shakeout is part of the sport, says WTA chief executive officerStacey Allaster.

“Every time there is a changing ofa generation of stars, one begins toask these questions. ‘Who will re-place Martina, Monica, Steffi?’ ” Al-laster told onthebaseline.com. “It’svery natural for all of us to say ‘Whois next?’ Who is the next generationof stars? Who is going to take theWTA to the next level?”

But finding and establishing stars— not just a revolving collection ofgood players — is critical to popularsuccess in any sport or entertain-ment model.

“You not only want star power, butyou want them to stick around sofans get to know them,” Larry Scott,Allaster’s WTA predecessor andnow the commissioner of the Pacif-ic-10 Conference, told USA Today.

“Justine (Henin), Kim (Clijsters) andVenus and Serena are great becausethey’ve been around a while.”

Family Circle Cup patrons got asneak preview of the parity trend in2009 when Germany’s Sabine Lis-icki, ranked No. 63 upon arrival inCharleston, leaned on a rocket serveto win her first singles title. Shedefeated Wozniacki in the final, buthas not won a title since.

WTA Tour stop winners this yearinclude Greta Arn, Jarmila Groth,Magdalena Rybarikova, GiselaDulko, Lourdes Dominguez Lino,Daniela Hantuchova and AnastasiaPavlyuchenkova.

None are ranked in the top 20.Yes, No. 2 Kim Clijsters and No.

3 Vera Zvonareva also have won

titles this year. But compare that to the 2010

tournaments leading up to theFamily Circle Cup. Winners includ-ed Venus Williams (twice), Clijsters(twice), Dementieva (twice), SerenaWilliams, Maria Sharapova, JelenaJankovic and Zvonareva.

What a difference a year makes.Almost incredibly, Clijsters, go-

ing into the Miami tour stop in lateMarch, was the only 2011 winnerwith a Grand Slam title on her re-sume.

Of course, the tour at some pointwas going to have to find new starsto replace the Williams sisters.

Why not start now?Wozniacki fits the part.“I just love playing matches,” the

Family Circle Cup No. 1 seed saidafter winning at Indian Wells. “Ilike winning. I like holding the tro-phy in my hands. It gives me thatenergy. It’s great. You know, I don’tfeel tired, to be honest. I feel great. Ifeel in good shape.”

Jankovic has been No. 1 and de-fending Family Circle Cup cham-pion Samantha Stosur has thepotential.

The scramble among youngerplayers is fun to watch, but it onlymakes establishing the next starmore difficult.

“It would be huge to be able towin here,” Stosur said in Miamilast month. “It would be the biggesttournament I’ve won to date, but it’stough. You have to do things wellboth on and off the court and havecertain things go your way.”

Such is the nature of a wide-openWTA.

O ver the top from Down Under.Samantha Stosur, of all people. Two years ago, the 27-year-old Australian was best known

on Daniel Island and the rest of the tennis world for her greatdoubles work. Stosur and American Lisa Raymond teamed to win theU.S. Open in 2005.Then at Roland Garros in 2006, a few months afterwinning the Family Circle Cup doubles title.

Now her poster hangs on the side of Family Circle Stadium, the custom-ary tribute given the defending singles champion.

The meteoric rise was all right there in one brief Sunday appearance.“You know, you have a handful of matches where everything you hit is

a good shot or winner and you just kind of can’t miss,” Stosur said lastApril after cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 rout of Vera Zvonareva in the FamilyCircle Cup final.

“I guess they’re the days that everyone talks about you’re in the zone orwhatever; you just do it. And it’s just a great feeling, and you wish thatyou could do that every day. But it’s not that easy, so to be able to do it in afinal is all that more pleasing.”

Veteran tennis enthusiasts can spot the physical changes. Stosur isstrong enough as a top singles contender toslug it out with the best. She still has only twosingles titles — Osaka in 2009 and the FamilyCircle Cup last year — but is consistent. Stosurjumped from No. 52 in the 2008 final rankingsto No. 13 in 2009 to No. 6 in 2010.

“Obviously, she improved so much in the lastfew years,” Daniela Hantuchova said after los-ing to Stosur in a Family Circle Cup semifinalsmatch last year. “She’s very pow-erful. She almost plays like a man,in a very good way, plays with alot of spin, and the serve is huge.

“I mean she was serving sliceserves 118, which I think youdon’t see on the men’s tour toooften, so she’s got a great game. She’s a very strong girl, and yeah, she works hard for it, so she defi-nitely deserves to be there.”

Rallying has been a way of tennis life for Stosur. She didnot grow up with tennis-playing parents and started playingas an 8-year-old when her older brother gave her a racket forChristmas.

“So I went down to the park with my brother and playedand loved that,” Stosur said before reaching the final atRoland Garros last June. “He played a little bit at school justfor fun, but never got lessons. I guess I was lucky to have anolder brother — he’s eight years older — who didn’t mindhanging out with his little sister.”

Stosur’s colorful approach is often fun to watch. The rangeof emotion was on display last year at the Family Circle Cup.

“I don’t get too mad with myself for showing emotion likethat as long as I can step up to the line the next point andplay a good one and still be kind of in control of the wayI’m playing,” Stosur said after defeating Hantuchova, “andmaybe I didn’t do that initially. But to be able to come backand really fix it up from 5-2, then that’s pleasing.”

Oudin among many young players tryingto state their case as best U.S. women’s playerBY GENE [email protected]

S erena and Venus Williams havespoiled us, and the U.S.

It will be a long time before twoother American women combine for20 Grand Slam singles titles. Maybe

never. The space between tennis royalty and all other

active Americans on the WTA Tour is a canyonfull of hope and anticipation.

Oh, how U.S. fans want a new star. MelanieOudin became a Family Circle Cup crowdfavorite in 2009 and the 19-year-old fromMarietta, Ga., gained more Charleston supportas she reached the quarterfinals last year.

“It was pretty tough out there,” Russia’s VeraZvonareva said after ousting Oudin, 7-5, 6-2 toadvance to the semifinals. “Sometimes I wouldhit a great shot, and I think it’s a great point, andI don’t have that many people cheering for me.But fair enough. She’s a great player, and every-one is supporting her here, and I’m sure nexttime we’re going to be playing in Moscow, andeveryone is going to support me.”

Oudin (pronounced oo-DAN) currently isranked No. 84 but reached No. 31 late last Aprilafter her Family Circle Cup run.

No. 43 Bethanie Mattek-Sands, age 26, is the

highest ranked American not named Williams. Then it’s No. 78 Varvara Lepchenko, a 25-year-old Allentown, Pa., resident born in the formerSoviet Union.

The list of younger U.S. players includes thesegood stories waiting to happen:

No. 92 Coco Vandeweghe, 19, the niece of for-mer UCLA and NBA star Kiki Vandeweghe andthe granddaughter of former NBA player ErnieVandeweghe and the late Colleen Kay Huchins,Miss America in 1952.

No. 114 Alison Riske, a 21-year-old HiltonHead resident who played at Vanderbilt. Shereached the semifinals at Birmingham last yearbefore losing to Maria Sharapova.

No. 328 Shelby Rogers, the 18-year-old bornin Mount Pleasant. She received a Family CircleCup wildcard invite. Rogers pushed No.36-ranked Shuai Peng to three sets last summerbefore losing in the first round of the U.S. Open.

No. 182 Sloane Stephens, daughter of thelate former NFL running John Stephens. TheFort Lauderdale resident turned 18 on March20.

No. 112 Christina McHale, 18, a New Jerseyresident who began playing tennis in HongKong, where the family relocated for five yearsfor her father’s job. Part Cuban, she speaksEnglish, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.McHale already has Fed Cup experience.

No. 129 Jamie Hampton, 21, an Auburn, Ala.,native who shot up from No. 628 in 2008.

And Oudin, who reached the quarterfinals atthe U.S. Open and the fourth round at Wimble-don in 2009.

The mix of potential and volatility showed upin November as the U.S. hosted Italy in the FedCup finals in San Diego. Oudin earned the onlyU.S. win in the four singles matches, defeatingFrench Open champion Francesca Schiavone,6-3, 6-1.

Vandeweghe lost to Flavia Pennetta, 6-1, 6-2,in the fourth singles match but replaced Oudinin the first match a day earlier when captainMary Joe Fernandez thought Vandeweghematched up better with Schiavone.

Schiavone handed Vandeweghe a 6-2, 6-4 loss.Fernandez replaced Mattek-Sands, the top U.S.player, with Oudin after Mattek-Sands crampedup in her singles match against Penetta.

It all ended well for Oudin, if not the U.S. Shewas delighted to get good luck wishes in theplayers’ lounge from the legendary Billie JeanKing.

“I was playing for myself, the team and thewhole U.S.,” Oudin said after her victory.“Sometimes the Fed Cup can bring out the bestin people and that’s what happened today.”

Large parts of the U.S. are eager for more.

Six WTA tour players — includingFamily Circle Cup participants Sabine Lisicki,Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Alize Cornet— will take part in Sony Ericsson’s Xperia HotShots reality show via a live Facebook page. The announcement was made last month inMiami, where co-developer Maria Sharapovatook center stage.

“It basically showcases what some of ourplayers are like off the court, giving fansinsight into their lives and personalities,”Sharapova said. “It’s a wonderful experiencefor the players, getting to be behind the camera, which some of them haven’t done a lot of yet.”

The show will run for the next five months.Participating players also include Dominika

Cibulkova, Sorana Cirstea and HeatherWatson. They will compete for fan votesonline, with the winner receiving a “SonyEricsson support package.”

Prize money upTotal Family Circle Cup prize money is up to

$721,000 this year after a drop from $1 million to$700,000 from 2009 to 2010. Such an increase in

the current economy — and other boosts aroundthe tour — are seen as good signs in the secondyear of the WTA’s “Roadmap” emphasis onstronger playing fields and fewer withdrawals.
