––– Benedictine College –––Benedictine College was founded in 1858 as St. Benedict’s College in Atchison. In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, seven Benedictine sisters arrived and founded an academy for young women. They went on to establish Mount St. Scholastica College. In 1971, Benedictine College was born when the Mount and St. Benedict’s merged to form what now has become one of the finest Catholic colleges in America. Today, Benedictine College is experiencing a renaissance. Enrollment is soaring, with new academic programs and facilities attracting large incoming freshman classes and record-setting attendance. At the core of this success are a thriving faith life, strong sense of community, and rigorous academic programs. Combining both new programs and facilities, the Mother Teresa Center for Nursing and Health Education signals the start of the new nursing program at Benedictine College. At the same time, remodeling in Westerman Hall to add a state-of-the-art engineering lab and a unique collaboration with the University of North Dakota, allows Benedictine students to earn degrees in Chemical, Civil, Electrical

and Mechanical Engineering. Benedictine College is still one of the few places students can major in Youth Ministry and the College Ministry program, recognized as one of the most vibrant in the country, continues to expand. In athletics, lights on the soccer field and Field Turf™ on both the football and soccer fields have improved those venues for varsity sports while allowing them to be used for intramurals, summer athletic camps, and club sports. U.S. News & World Report has named Benedictine College as one of America’s best colleges and the school is a bright star in the world of Catholic higher education, having been named one of the top Catholic Colleges in America by First Things magazine and the Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. The School of Business continues to receive international attention with its graduate programs and the Journal of International Business. The Cray Center for Entrepreneurship was recently highlighted nationally for its creative approach to spreading entrepreneurship in the Heartland of America. Benedictine College’s campus in Florence, Italy, continues to grow in popularity, giving students the chance to spend an entire semester studying abroad. In addition to all of that, the Discovery Program continues to provide excellent research opportunities for students who wish to pursue projects outside the standard classroom curriculum. It is truly a great time to be at Benedictine College. Go Ravens!

6 7––– 2011 Ravens Coaching Staff –––Head Coach Larry WilcoxSince the fall of 1979, the Ravens have been guided by one of its own - head coach Larry Wilcox. During his tenure as head coach, the Ravens have compiled an overall record of 220-123. The season-ending win over Graceland University on Nov. 13 allowed Coach Wilcox to become the winningest four-year

collegiate football coach in Kansas history. Coach Wilcox is one of only seven coaches in the history of the NAIA to achieve 200 career wins. With 220 heading into this season, he is only one of three active coaches in the NAIA with more than 200 wins and is fifth on the all-time NAIA wins list. He has been named Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times. The Ravens have earned five HAAC titles and qualified for the NAIA playoffs 11 times, which includes a run of nine straight seasons from 1995-2003. A 1972 graduate of Benedictine College and the Ravens football program, Coach Wilcox began his coaching career at his alma mater when his playing days ended serving as an assistant coach until called on to lead the Ravens. Just seven years after his graduation, Coach Wilcox was named the 13th coach in the history of the St. Benedict’s/Benedictine College football program and is the program’s all-time win’s leader.

Asst. Head Coach/ Offensive Line George PapageorgiouOffensive line coach George Papageorgiou has been with the Raven coaching staff for 12 years. Coach “Pops” will be coaching the offensive line for the sixth year after serving as the Ravens running backs coach. He has been a key recruiter of some of the Ravens top transfer athletes during his tenure as an assistant coach. One such success was running back

John Willits, who led the NAIA in rushing during the 2004 season and is currently ranked 10th all-time on the Ravens rushing list.

Defensive Coordinator/ Secondary Charlie GartenmayerSince 1979, defensive coordinator Charlie Gartenmayer has served alongside Coach Wilcox. Four years ago, after retiring from many years of service to the Atchison public school system, Coach Gartenmayer was asked to take over as the school’s Athletic Director. His duties as Athletic Director in addition to his coaching responsibilities

allowed him to become a full-time member of the Athletic Department staff. Before taking over as the AD, he was the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services after his retirement from USD 409 in the spring of 2007. A former Raven himself, Coach Gartenmayer was a key member of the Ravens 1974 squad that finished the season as the top-ranked defense in the NAIA Div. The 1974 Ravens

defense surrendered just 164.7 yards per game that season. Along with his many years of dedication to the Raven football program, Coach Gartenmayer was also recognized in 2000 as the top assistant coach in the NAIA, earning the distinguished AFCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Wide Receivers Dennis MurphyWide Receiver coach Dennis Murphy also began his run with the Ravens in 1979 with Coach Wilcox and Coach Gartenmayer. Coach Murphy became the second Raven assistant to earn the honor of being named an AFCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008. Coach Murphy has coached several All-America receivers, most recently 2008 AFCA-NAIA All-

American Conor Walsh. For many years, Coach Murphy was a key coach in molding the Ravens of the future as he headed up the junior varsity program. Coach Murphy, like Coach Gartenmayer, also wears another hat for Benedictine College. When he’s not leading the Ravens receivers, Coach Murphy teaches in the HPER department at BC and is also one of the school’s five fully certified athletic trainers.

Strength & Condition/Defensive Line Jon StammersAfter spending 25 years on the Ravens coaching staff, Jon Stammers has also played a key role in the success of the Ravens. In charge of the Ravens strength & conditioning program, Coach Stammers is charged with keeping the Ravens in shape during the season and off-season workouts. After two years of coaching the Ravens

outside linebackers, Coach Stammers is now charged with guiding the Raven defensive front as he will coach the defensive ends and nose guards. Those two positions will have a major impact in the success of the 2011 Ravens. Coach Stammers is also an instructor in Benedictine’s HPER department.

Special Teams/Outside Linebackers Mike KersleyCoach Mike Kersley has become a true player’s coach while spending the past 17 seasons with the Ravens. Coach Kersley has taken great pride in producing some of the best tight ends and specialists in the HAAC over his time with BC. Under his watch Benedictine has produced some of the top kick returners

and punt returners in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. This season, he will put his years of experience into coaching the Raven outside linebackers and will no doubt continue to help the Raven football program succeed.

Page 7: 2011 Football Media Guide

––– 2011 Ravens Coaching Staff –––Inside Linebackers Larry HarlessThe “Dean” of the Ravens coaching staff, Larry Harless has spent over 40 years coaching football - the past 20 with the Ravens.

Coach Harless is a straight-forward thinking football coach and is an example of what it takes to become a successful coach. His enthusiasm for the game of

football is contagious to his fellow coaches who are around him on a daily basis.

Quarterbacks/ Offensive CoordinatorFran JohnsonFran Johnson starts his fifth year as the quarterbacks coach and his second season as the Ravens offensive coordinator.

Coach Johnson was a quarterback for the Ravens from 2001 to 2004 and under his guidance, recent graduating QB Ryan Kelly was able to surpass several records established by Coach Johnson.

Before returning to campus full time, Coach Johnson spent several years playing indoor football, wrapping up his career with the Corpus Christi Sharks of the AF2 league.

Runningbacks Nic StillwellRunningbacks coach Nic Stillwell returns for his fifth year with the Ravens. Coach Stillwell is a business teacher at Atchison High School and resides with his wife, Jodie, in Atchison. He played college football for Baker University from 2001-04 where he was named a NAIA-Daktronics Scholar Athlete.

Along with coaching the running backs, Coach Stillwell is also involved in the production of the Raven game film, which the players and staff use each week in preparation for their weekly opponents.

* Active Coaches

The Ravens coach-ing staff is rich in the tradition of Benedictine College football. No other staff of college coaches in the state of Kansas col-lectively has more wins than Coach Wilcox and his staff. The legacy of head coach Larry Wilcox and his dynamic duo of long-time assistant Charlie Gartenmayer and Dennis Murphy continues into its 32nd season this year. The atmosphere created by the coaching staff is second to none. While each coach may not be a “Raven” they all share the desire to add their knowledge to the Raven football family. Collectively, the Raven football coaching staff doesn’t coach for fame and fortune. They devote themselves to the Raven football pro-gram and the legacy of their football family as they each want to see every player succeed in the same small-college atmosphere that made them the men they are today.

––– Amino Center –––

Over the course of the last few year, the Amino Center complex has gone through some major renovations. Prior to the 2007 season, new offices were built by assistant coach Mike Kersley. The old two-room coaches offices were turned into a conference room with three additional office spaces added on. The upgrade to the coaches offices gives each coach his own space and creates a more welcom-ing environment to visitors and recruits. In 2004, two classrooms were added to give the Ravens large meeting rooms. The classrooms also gave the school two large lecture halls. The facility has housed the coaches offices, the Ravens football locker room and an outstanding weight room since it was initially completed. The upgrades over the past several years have allowed the program to showcase the best aspects of Benedictine College football.

14 15––– Amino Center –––Amino Center Weight Room

The Raven weight room features “state of the art” Hammer free weight equipment. This equipment allows the Raven staff to fully optimize their ground-based, close kinetic chain philosophy of strength and condi-tioning. The weight room also includes a complete double set of dumbbells ranging from 3 to 140 pounds; the dumbbells are used extensively in unilateral, stability, and core-strengthening exercises. Other train-ing modalities avail-able include a set of medicine balls and several physio balls for further functional train-ing. Raven athletes are able to use the weight facility at their conve-nience consisting of two large rooms can be accessed from 6 am to 11 pm seven days a week. Raven football student-athletes are certainly proud of and grateful for such a fine facility.

14 15 ––– Amino Center –––

The Amino Center not only houses the Raven weight room and coaching offices but two large meeting rooms. When the meeting rooms are not being utilized by the foot-ball program, the double as two lecture halls that also allowed the school to expand its available class space. The hallway located outside of the meeting rooms has be-come a hall of honor for the program with a large display case and pictures of the Ravens HAAC Defensive and Offensive Players of the Year. Various pictures of the history of the program, including a picture of former Raven and NAIA Hall of Famer Jamie Mueller from his time with the Buffalo Bills are located in the hallway and along the outside walls of the meeting rooms.

––– Larry Wilcox Stadium –––

The crowning jewel of the Raven football program is Larry Wilcox Stadium and the playing surface at the stadium. Upgraded to FieldTurf during the spring of 2008, Larry Wilcox Stadium has become known as one of the best home-field advantages in small-college football. The chair-back seats came to Benedictine from Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the former home of the Atlanta Braves. The stadium not only offers Raven fans a great view of the game from every seat, it also delivers a breath-taking view of the Abby, located on the southeast side of the field. The stadium was built with fans in mind. The seats face toward the east, which means that the fall sun will be either directly above the seats or behind the stadium dur-ing games. The stadium also offers a large concourse, rest rooms and a concession stand conveniently located at the top of the stadium so fans never miss a down of Raven football.

Ravens Chain GangFrom left: Patrick Regan, Danny Wagner, Phil Intfen and Derrick Franklin have served on the Ravens sidelines for many years. They years of service range from the 40-plus years of Wagner to the near 10 years of Franklin. Their collective service to the Ravens football program is very valuable.

Press Box CrewFrom left: Bill Roe, Charlie Carrigan and Marty Clements have served as the scoreboard and clock operators for Ravens football for many years. Their reliablity and professional approach to their jobs has allowed home football games at Raven Stadium to run smoothly.
