    Introduction

Green Building, also known as sustainable

building, is the practice of creating

structures and using processes that areenvironmentally responsible and resource-

    efficient throughout a building's life-cycle

    THIS IS NOT A GREEN

    BUILDING !!!

A building which is constructed in an ecofriendly

environment cannot be called as a Green Building

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

o It is applicable to any type of buildings &

    existing buildings

o Green buildings are designed to reduce the

overall impact of the built environment on

human health and the natural environment

by: Efficiently using energy, water, and other

    resources

    Protecting occupant health and improving

    employee productivity

    Reducing waste, pollution and environmental

    degradation

    Green building rating system

    Leadership in Energy &

    Environmental Design (LEED)-

    is an internationally recognized green

    building certification system, providing

    third-party verification.

Developed by the U.S. Green building

    council (USGBC)

    Typical Features of Green Buildings

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    9/32

    Sustainable Sites

Reuse of existing buildings and the

    preservation of the surrounding

    environment.

    Sediment and erosion control- reduce

negative impacts on water & air quality

    Reduce site disturbance- Conserve

    existing natural areas and restore

    damaged areas

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    10/32

    Alternative Transportation - Reduce

    pollution and land developmentimpacts

    Minimize Heat Island Effect

Light pollution reduction- Eliminatelight trespass from the building and

    site

    Urban redevelopment

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    11/32

    Energy efficiency

    Minimum Energy Performance -

minimum level of energy efficiency for

the base building and systems. E.g.

    effective window placement

CFC Reduction in HVAC&R Equipment-Reduce ozone depletion.

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    12/32

    Optimize Energy Performance-

increasing levels of energyperformance & to reduce

    environmental impacts associated with

excessive energy use. E.g. UseENERGY STAR Qualified Products

On site renewable energy -to reduceenvironmental impacts associated with

fossil fuel energy use.E.g. solar & wind

    power

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    13/32

    Water efficiency

    Rain water harvesting system- Optimize

    ground water usage and increaseits

    recharge

    Water Efficient Landscaping- Limit or

eliminate the use of potable water for

    landscape irrigation.

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    14/32

Innovative Wastewater technologiesReduce generation of wastewater

    and potable water demand

E.g. dual plumbing that recycles waste water

Water Use Reduction - reduce the burden onmunicipal water

    supply and wastewater

    systems.

E.g. water conserving fixturessuch as ultra-low flush toilets

    and low-flow shower heads.

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    15/32

    Materials efficiency

    Storage & Collection of Recyclables-

reduction of waste generated by building

    occupants

Building reuse - reduce environmentalimpacts of new buildings as they relate to

    materials manufacturing and transport.

Construction Waste Management- Redirectreusable materials to appropriate sites.

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    16/32

    Resource Reuse- reduce demand for

virgin materials Regional Materials- Increase demand

for building materials and products that

are extracted and manufactured withinthe region

    Recycled Content- products that

    incorporate recycled content materials

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    17/32

    Rapidly Renewable Materials-

    E.g. bamboo (because bamboo grows

    quickly)

    Certified Wood -Encourage

    environmentally responsible forest

    management.

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    18/32

    Indoor environmental quality

    Minimum IAQ Performance-

    Establish minimum indoor

    air quality (IAQ) performance.

    Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Monitoring-

Ventilation Effectiveness-delivery andmixing of fresh air

    E.g.properly designed Heating,Ventilation and Air- Conditioning(HVAC) system

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    19/32

Construction IAQ Management Plan- PreventIAQ problems resulting from theconstruction/renovation process

Indoor Chemical & Pollutant Source Control

    .E.g. reducebuilding products

    emit toxic gases,

    such as Volatile

    Organic Compound

    (VOC) and formaldehyde

Benefits of Green Buildings They can reduce respiratory diseases

    by 9-20%

    They increase occupant performance

    by 6-26%

    Their occupants have 15% less

    absenteeism compared to those in

    other buildings

    Conclusion

Technology needs to overweigh costfactor so that green buildings become

    viable.

There is a large need of awareness oftechnology.

By the year 2050 it is estimated that

residential, commercial andinstitutional buildings will consume38%

of global energy and release 3800 mega

tones of carbon in the atmosphere.

  • 7/30/2019 2011 Green Building

    30/32

Climate change by itself can also

    precipitate larger energy demand as

people seek greater comfort levels in

    more extreme conditions.

Its the need of the day for every new

construction to be a green building and

to modify the present buildings with itsfeatures
