ARA Something old, somethingnew. Something borrowed, something blue. While typically the refrain for most brides, this adage holds equally true for the tophome decorating trends for the comingyear.
Whats old is new againWhether theyre genuine period piec-
es being repurposed or home furnishingsreproduced from popular items from the50s, 60s or 70s, vintage will be hot nextyear, according to Kenneth Ludwig of
Kenneth Ludwig Home Furnishings, Ltd.Examples include chair frames redone innew upholstery, traditional lighting fixturesin newer brass or pewter finishes, or prod-ucts imported from Russia, Poland and theCzech Republic such as chairs done in oldgrain sacks, or old carts from factories usedfor end tables or coffee tables.
A spectrum of colors
Color trends will carry over from 2010to 2011 with the soothing aqua and greenhues that draw their inspiration from theverdigris deposits found on weathered cop-per statues, predicts design expert, TV host/spokesperson and best-selling author KathyPeterson. For outdoor furniture and acces-sories, she sees sassy colors like lime green, bold orange and Caribbean blue, along withmore subdued hues such as sage green, barnred and mocha brown.
The mad, mad world of furniture
Taking a nod from the award-winningAMC series Mad Men, Linda Fougerousseof Interior Transformation, Inc. also seesfurniture styles returning to the 50s and60s with round tapered legs on angles, geometric accents and seating with curvedbacks. Jase Frederick of Jase FrederickSustainable Interiors adds that classic woodpieces made from sentimental stock likefallen trees or scrap wood from ancestral or
historic structures
will become heirlooms to pass from onegeneration to the next.
A trend that will stick aroundA small change in a room can make
a huge difference and wall coveringsmake a dramatic, yet cost-effective state-ment. With their innovative new SmartStickrepositionable wall murals, Murals YourWay has made it easy for homeowners, renters and even college students to adda fresh new look to indoor and outdoorwalls, floors, doors and windows. Easilyreplied and removed, SmartStick muralsboast a high quality, lightly textured finishand can be reused and reinstalled hundredsof times, says Todd Imholte, president of Murals Your Way. Its a perfect temporary
or long-term decorating solution forconsumers.
Illuminating insightsAs living green becomes more ingrained
in our lives, LED lighting will continue tolight the way, according to Jeff Dross, seniorproduct manager of Kichler Lighting, whowill introduce several new under-cabinetsystems and landscape products with anultra-efficient technology next year. For acasual, contemporary twist, Dross also sug-gests hanging chandeliers in new areas suchas bathrooms, bedrooms and closets, andembracing todays art glass applications, which are much more chic and casual thanthe Tiffany lamps of the past.

Theres nothing bland aboutneutrals
In a recent video posted on herweb site, Michelle Lamb - co-found-er and chairman of Minneapolis-based Marketing Directions, Inc.and editorial director of The TrendCurve - spoke about a resurgencein neutrals in 2011. These morecomplex chameleon neutrals willhave more color, and will shift andchange based on the light and what-evers around them. Lamb claimsthat these neutrals will be the likesof which we havent seen in 20years or more.
Youve gotta have heartThe kitchen remains the heart
of the home, according to AndreaVollf of Andrea Vollf Interiors.Consumers interested in remodel-ing their kitchens should considera well-designed, open, airy layoutthat integrates the kitchen into therest of their homes. Dross also sug-gests new countertop materials inlieu of granite, such as quartz stoneor binding crushed recyclable glassunderneath a solid, smooth surface
for those seeking green alterna-tives.
Underfoot but not under-rated
M. Grace Sielaff of M. GraceDesigns, Inc. envisions rich-look-ing herringbone-patterned hard-wood floors in an ebony oak fin-ish paying attention to boardthickness and giving special con-sideration to products that meetindustry LEED requirements. Fora green touch, Frederick suggestshardwood flooring from reclaimedwood or sustainably grown andharvested sources. To add warmth,Marta Cullen of Dream Interiorssuggests round rugs the bigger, the better.
Things are definitely lookingup
According to Janet Davidsen of Details in Design, Inc., homeown-ers are casting their eyes upward. The ceiling will be embellished andnoticed more as the fifth wall, and may be painted or architec-turally enhanced to play more of a focal point in a space. Sielaff also suggests homeowners consider
a painted metallic ceiling with alarge, eye-catching chandelier.
Green continues to be keenAccording to Kathy Hoffman
of Susan Fredman Design Group, products and materials such asbronze, copper, clay, cotton, linenand hemp which are environ-mentally friendly, contribute tohealthy indoor air quality, and canbe repurposed or recycled at theend of their lifespan will be inhigh demand. Vollf adds that usingsuch natural textures as hemp, jute, organic cotton, recycled polyester, bamboo fiber, organic wool andlinen, and soy silk will help keep itsimple but still green.
Home decorating expertKenneth Ludwig recommendsrepurposing old furniture, as vin-tage items are in for 2011.

ARA The master bedroom hasevolved into far more than a place whereyou hit the pillow and grab a few hoursof sleep each night. Today, its almost a
misnomer to call these modern, multi-func-tional rooms bedrooms. If youre lookingto renovate, expand or build a new mas-ter bedroom, think master suite instead.Dont just create a cozy room meant forsleeping, because in recent years it reallyhas turned into so much more.
The growing trend of making the mas-ter suite one of your immediate familyschoice gathering spots stems from a flag-ging economy and the fact that more peopleare choosing to enjoy leisure time at homeinstead of out on the town. And believe it
or not, many are choosing to spend it in themaster bedroom. The master bedroom has increasingly
become a restful retreat within your largerhome - a place where you can spend theday, if you wish, with all the comforts of a traditional family room, says DonnaSchroeder, color marketing and designmanager for Dutch Boy Paints. The trendis to combine comfort with convenientamenities in an atmosphere that is peacefuland relaxing.
One of the easiest ways to accomplish
this is to look to sumptuous hotel suites for
your design inspiration. Plush, comfort-able and full of luxuries big and small hotel suites offer plenty of ideas youcan mimic. You say you like coffee firstthing in the morning? Why go down tothe kitchen? Install a coffee bar, completewith an espresso maker, coffee grinder anda mini refrigerator to store milk for thoseextra-foam lattes.
Dont expect to lounge on the bed withyour cappuccino in hand. Reserve space inyour design for an ample sitting area whereyou can put a sofa, comfortable readingchairs and even a state-of-the-art entertain-ment system for movie nights and lazySundays.
Add a built-in customized entertainmentcenter to house the latest and greatest gad-gets for everyone in the house. Youll wantto have room not only for the flat screenHDTV and Blu-Ray player but also the
kids gaming system, DVR receiver and anook for Dads sound system. You mightalso want to include shelves for Moms
prized collection of romantic old movies soshe can watch them in the comfort of herbedroom haven.
You can picture it already, cant you?First, however, you must set the stage forthis oasis, using a serene palette of colorand textures to accent the space and createa true sense of retreat. The first consid-eration? Paint and the color it provides.Your choice of paint will create the canvasthat complements and highlights all of therooms other design features.
This years color trends are inspired
by everyday life, making them versatilein any setting, including a master suite,Schroeder says. One collection that worksespecially well is one that reflects a practi-cal way of life - a true functionality.
Another palette working its way intothe contemporary master suite is one thatrevolves around technology whichalso reflects the modern amenities that areincorporated into these living spaces. Softneutrals and grays complement the true
serenity of a master suite and the reflec-tive alone time you appreciate when youreaway from todays sometimes overwhelm-
ing abundance of technology and instantcommunication.Nothing ties a room together better than
luxurious design elements like custom-made fabric headboards and coordinatingbedding in silks, Egyptian cottons andother natural fibers. Think mix-and-matchwhen it comes to furniture eclecticismrules in 2011. The pervasive influenceof steampunk a quirky mix of old andnew makes it perfectly fine to blend acontemporary platform bed with an ornate,Victorian dresser. The style is flea market
meets high-end, and it looks great.Life moves at a rapid-fire pace thesedays, and a master suite is one place whereyou can get away from the hustling paceand just take a deep breath, Schroedersays. When creating your sanctuary withinyour home, take time to consider all thedesign options so you can have a spacewhere you can escape from responsibilities, deadlines and outside noise and simply justrelax.
The master suite: a haven within your homeThis years color trends
are inspired by everyday life,
making them versatile in anysetting, including amaster suite.

ARA The kitchen is the heart of thehome: a place to cook and share a meal,to entertain friends, gather as a family andeven pay bills or do homework.
From a decor perspective, the kitchenis the perfect place to get colorful, saysGinny Bean. Vibrant colors are a greatway to reflect and reinforce the highenergy of your homes central gatheringplace.
Energizing your kitchen doesnt takea major decor overhaul. Some strategi-cally selected splashes of color in coun-tertop appliances, cookware, dinnerware, candles, placemats and other linens cando the trick.
Among this springs hottest colors, warm hues like tangerine and butterscotchare perfect for kitchens because theyrecomforting and actually stimulate appe-tite, explains Bean. A lot of the fun
comes in blending old favorites and new
shades in fresh, innovative ways.Color palettes that Bean recommends
for spring 2011 include:Rustic revivalRelaxed and informal, this palette is
inspired by nature and features colorspulled from the outdoors. Shades suchas basil, eggplant and copper help createa cozy space reminiscent of the past andsimpler times. For a new spin on a tradi-tional rustic color scheme, Bean suggestspairing a deep, earthy hue with accents of cool pink.
Bold expressionExuding optimism, this palette creates
a look that is both unconventional andenergetic. Unique color mixes, such asintense purple combined with butterscotchand Capri blue, or sunny orange withdark red balanced against a soft neutrallike champagne, create a space thats
eclectic, yet warm and welcoming. Beanrecommends mixingpatterns, textures andstyles for a one-of-a-kind look.
Classic eleganceEvoking the look
of 17th centuryVersailles, this colorpalette will give yourkitchen a serene, ele-gant look. Traditionalshades like lavender,
turquoise, antique pink and bronze can becombined with touches of richer colorslike peacock, charcoal and delicious redfor a more contemporary look.
World marketWith the explosion of technology, the
world has suddenly become a much small-er place. This modern palette reflects thenew global outlook with cookware andother accents in colors from other cultures,
such as the calm oranges and yellows of India, the bright reds of the Far East, andthe Capri blue of the Mediterranean. Beansuggests grounding these bright colorswith black, white, silver or brushed stain-less.
In the final analysis, its all aboutdoing what you like and surroundingyourself with the colors that make youhappy, says Bean.

Since 1960What homeowners are breathing in
every day has the potential to harm theirhealth. According to the Environmental
Protection Agency, its the air inside of thehome, rather than the air outside, that maycause the most physical harm. Many peopleseek options to reduce the toxicity of indoorair through a filtration system.
Indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more tox-ic than outside air. Newer, energy-efficienthomes that are very well insulated againstdrafts may be among the most dangerous.Thats because they restrict the ability forfresh air to seep into the home.
Resident dust mites, harmful airborneparticulates and even mold could be resid-
ing in the house along with its occupants. An air filtration system can be one strategyhomeowners can employ to clean up indoorair.
Homeowners may want to consider apermanent, whole-house unit that hooks upto the central heating and air conditioningalready set up in the home. This enablesevery room in the home to receive filteredair. It is essential that the filters on the unitbe changed frequently. Also, if a humidifieris hooked up to the HVAC unit, then thewater should be changed on a regular ba-
sis so that mold does not proliferate and getblown throughout the home. Homeownerswho dont have forced-air heating and cool-ing will have to have a different filtrationsystem installed instead.
For renters or individuals who dontwant a permanent system, there are manyportable air filtration units on the market. These can be moved from room to roomand even brought along when traveling.
Air filtration units will vary depend-
ing on what they are cleaning from the air. Some tackle mold, others viruses and bac-teria. Individuals with allergies should look
for filters that target dust and pollen. Otherscan trap fumes and microscopic particlesthrough unique processes. Here are some of the advanced cleaning filtration systems toconsider.
* Ionizers: Emit a small electric chargeto the air stream creating a magnetic-likeattraction for pollution particles, whichcauses them to adhere to the filter.
* Ultraviolet light purification: Airpasses through a UV system that destroysbacteria, viruses and dust mites of anysize.
* Electrostatic precipitators: Thesecreate opposite charges on metal wires orplates, attracting and holding dust, pol-len, smoke, and other particles as small as.0001 microns. The assembly often can beremoved and washed for reuse.
* High efficiency particulate air(HEPA): These filters are designed to re-move 99.97 percent of the particulates thatpass through the filters. They will have noeffect on fumes, viruses, bacteria, smallermold spores, or some tobacco particulates.
* Ultra HEPA: An even more efficientform of HEPA cleaners, which typicallyclean out 99.999 percent of the particulatesthat pass through them.
* Ozone: Destroys all bacteria thatcomes in contact with the ozone, and leavesa fresh smell in the air. However, thesafety of ozone inside the home is question-able. The Canadian government has bannedthe sale of ozone releasing air purificationsystems.
The Choice for a HomeAir Filtration System
4 Once Popular Trends Losing FavorAmong HomeownersHousing trends come and go. Just think of those avocado-colored stoves from the
1970s or the formica bedroom sets of the 1980s. The woodburning fireplace was a must-have home accessory in the early 1990s, but now it is losing ground to pellet stoves andgreener options. Here are a few other housing trends that are going out of style and mak-ing room for newer designs.
1. Kitchen desks: What used to be all the rage a few years back are now being passedover for larger desks in family rooms or bedrooms. Kitchen desks tend to be small andare more likely to collect clutter than provide a viable working space.
2. Carpeting: Although a little over half of all homes still have carpeting, wood floors, tiles and vinyl products are gaining ground over the once staple of interior design.
3. Skylights: The once desired windows on roofs have continued to decline in popu-larity. Many new home manufacturers have nixed skylights from their designs. Improp-erly installed skylights tend to leak and can be maintenance nightmares.
4. Living rooms: Homeowners who do not desire a formal living space are eschewingliving rooms for all-purpose rooms that provide a better place for the family to gather. If a person prefers the TV be separate from a sitting area, then two distinct rooms stillmay be needed.
