DILLON RANGER DISTRICT ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES FDRD supports the US Forest Service's efforts to sustainably manage Summit County, Colorado's White River National Forest (WRNF). The WRNF is the most visited forest in the U.S. with half of these visitors recreating in the Dillon Ranger District. This high usage necessitates increased stewardship efforts like the projects coordinated by the Friends of the Dillon Ranger District. We host approximately 45 community-based volunteer projects each year that address forest health issues including recreation management, fuels and fire, invasive species, and habitat and forest restoration. We encourage your group to volunteer at any of the following community service projects. If these dates do not work, we can discuss alternative, service, opportunities for your group. Advanced Whitewater: The Numbers on the Arkansas River – South of Leadville (Class IV)

Miners in the late 1800’s viewed these eight rapids on the northern section of the Arkansas as non-navigable landmarks rather than as the quintessential Class IV classics that they’re viewed as today; hence they appointed them the numbers that remain as their names. The simplicity of their labels, however, does not reflect simplicity in their character. This run is charged with high-intensity, continuous whitewater and punctuated by the eight notorious Numbers. Paddling the Numbers requires good physical condition and a minimum of 15 years.

ADVANCED – 6.5 hours (lunch available for $14 per person) Adults (ages 15 & up) $129.72 per person (Inclusive of tax, surcharge & 20% service charge)

Climbing takes places only 4 miles north of the AVA Outpost on granite cliffs overlooking the Arkansas River. Rock climbing is a great activity for groups or families looking for team-building activities. With an emphasis on trust, teamwork and focus, learning to rock climb is an invaluable experience. TREE PLANTING Forests have been described as “the lungs of the earth.” Here is an opportunity to foster that energy and expand the complex community of the forest where trees and other plants and animals live in delicate balance. Consider becoming hands-on stewards of the forest by planting trees in Keystone as a group. This activity includes an introduction of the local ecology by a member of our environmental staff, tree-planting supervision, trees, shovels, gloves, and flag markers for the new trees. Activity requires approximately 2 hours. Minimum amount of people for this activity is 20. Maximum number of people for this activity is 60. Cost is $20 per person and a 20% gratuity will be added to your final bill. This activity is available spring through fall and requires advance reservations What tree planting accomplishes:

“One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.” -U.S. Department of Agriculture “The planting of trees means improved water quality, resulting in less runoff and erosion. This allows more recharging of the ground water supply. Wooded areas help prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams.”- USDA Forest Service “In laboratory research, visual exposure to settings with trees has produced significant recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension.” –Dr. Roger S. Ulrich, Texas A&M University

SPIRIT TASTINGS Daily Spirits Tastings open your palate to new experiences as we guide you through a tasting of wine, beer and spirits in a casual, social atmosphere at different locations around the resort. Must be 21 years or older. Reservations required. Call 970-496-4386 for reservations and daily schedule.
