The Manhattan baseball team has its sights set on one goal in 2011: the MAAC Championship. The Jaspers have stood on the doorstep the last four seasons, advancing to the MAAC Tournament, posting 30+ wins each year and winning two MAAC Regular-Season titles along the way. But sixth-year head coach Kevin Leighton is eager to bring the Jaspers back to the NCAA Tournament, a feat he accomplished in his first season at the helm, winning the 2006 MAAC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Regional Finals.

In 2011, Leighton will mentor a solid core of experienced players, along with a new crop of talent who are prepared to make a run for the hardware. The Jaspers’ senior class features four All-MAAC honorees, including two 2010 First Team All-MAAC selections in outfielder Mark Onorati and third baseman Chad Salem.

“We are excited about this group,” explained Leighton. “We have talent returning and I feel that our young guys have shown a lot of potential.”

On the mound, Manhattan has bolstered its staff, adding eight pitchers out of its 13 newcomers. The Jaspers will rely primarily on junior Mike Giordano, along with sophomores Eric Luksis and John Soldinger, the 2010 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year. The trio combined for 16 of the Jaspers’ 31 wins last season and 10 of their 12 saves in 2010.

“As a whole our pitchers are young, but we

have more depth,” Leighton commented. “We will need Mike, Eric and John to lead the way on the mound this year.”

Manhattan returns seven of its nine everyday starters from last year’s squad which finished 31-20 overall and was nearly unbeatable in home games, registering a 15-1 record at VanCortlandt Park.

INFIELD

CornersManhattan returns significant power and solid

defensive skills on the corners in seniors Chad Salem and Austin Sheffield. The tandem has locked down third and first base, respectively, for their first three seasons with the program.

Salem is a three-time All-MAAC honoree who earned First Team All-MAAC honors and was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association Northeast Region Second Team after a spectacular 2010 campaign. The 6’0” 205-pound third baseman from Rye, N.Y. led Manhattan and ranked in the top-5 of the conference in RBI (68), runs scored (69), home runs (15) and slugging percentage (.717) starting all 51 games as a junior. Additionally, Salem posted a .383 batting average, while leading the league and finishing 21st in all of NCAA Division I with a .519 on-base percentage.

“Plain and simple, Chad is a true competitor

who wants to win,” Leighton emphasized about his third baseman, who has started 150 of 151 career appearances as a Jasper. “Year after year, Chad has put up big numbers for us. He wants to constantly improve, and that is something you can’t teach.”

The Jaspers will look to Sheffield to hold down first base again this season. Last season, the Augusta, Ga. native drove in 52 RBI, posted 16 doubles and blasted six home runs. He led Manhattan with 16 multi-RBI games and had 17 multi-hit efforts. It was a solid follow up to his All-MAAC Second Team campaign as a sophomore when he hit .349 with seven home runs and 47 RBI starting all 53 games in 2009.

“Austin will be a key to our offense this year. He will be called upon to come through in RBI spots,” stated Leighton. “Austin is smooth around the bag and makes our infielders better.”

Middle InfieldThe Jaspers possess depth in the middle

infield and return key contributors from last season in sophomores Nick Camastro and Kyle Murphy. Junior infielder Will DeRuve, the sole upperclassman of the unit, is coming back from an injury which sidelined him for the majority of the 2010 campaign, while freshman Yoandry Galan will compete immediately for a starting spot.

“Our infield defense has improved this year,” explained Leighton. “We have some

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK

AUSTIN SHEFFIELD

pretty athletic players up the middle who can make plays. The key for us is to make the routine plays and turn the double play when opportunities arise.”

Camastro will return to shortstop where he started all 51 games during his rookie campaign. The 5’11” Lagrangeville, N.Y. native hit .302, had 23 RBI and scored 40 runs. Camastro recorded 49 hits, including six doubles and two triples. He had 10 multi-hit games and tallied four multi-RBI performances.

Murphy is a utility player who is expected to serve primarily as the Jaspers’ designated hitter this season. He spent most of his time as a freshman playing second base. Murphy is a versatile athlete with excellent speed, which goes along with a solid bat. He started 45 of 46 appearances last season, driving in 17 runs, scoring 31 runs and posting a .409 on-base percentage. Murphy registered 10 multi-hit games as a rookie.

Galan is a very good defensive infielder who comes to Manhattan from nationally-ranked Florida Christian High School. The 6’0” Miami native is expected to compete for a starting spot at second base. Galan was named Second Team All-Dade County and won Florida Christian’s Golden Glove Award as a senior after helping the Patriots to a 25-4 record, the 2A District Championship and a top-50 national ranking.

DeRuve is a versatile infielder who offers the Jaspers a good lefty bat in the lineup. Last season he appeared in 12 games, starting in seven before suffering a season ending injury. As a freshman, the 6’2” 190-pound junior from Delmar, N.Y. started 27 of 37 appearances. He recorded 20 RBI and scored 23 runs in 2009.

Sophomores Brian Simmons and Julian De La Rosa add depth to the Jaspers’ infield. Simmons appeared in nine games off the bench in 2010 playing both second base and shortstop. The native of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. was named All-Section I League II North as a senior at Lakeland High School. De La Rosa appeared in two games before suffering a season ending injury last year. The multi-purpose infielder played three years at Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn, before spending his final season at the Lawrenceville School where he helped the team to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJISAA) Division A State Championship and was named to the NJISAA Second Team All-Prep.

Newcomers Andrew Gorecki and Jeffrey Mathers give the Jaspers additional options on the infield. Gorecki, a 6’1” 190-pound native of Smithtown, N.Y., lettered four years at St. Anthony’s High School. The three-time team MVP hit .343 with a .565 on-base percentage as a senior. Mathers brings a good lefty bat to the roster. He is a four-year letterwinner at Elmira Free Academy and was a three-time All-Southern Tier Athletic Conference honoree. Mathers was a All-New York State Fourth Team selection as a senior after batting .420 with 12 doubles, two home runs and 25 RBI.

OUTFIELDManhattan’s outfield is arguably the class

of the conference. The unit features All-MAAC performers Mark Onorati and Mike McCann, along with speedy sophomore Anthony Vega, who will help fill the void with the graduation of four-time All-MAAC selection Kevin Nieto. The

Jaspers’ outfield is expected to provide offensive firepower, as well as defensive stability.

“In my opinion, we have the best outfield in the conference, once again,” Leighton emphasized. “We have serious speed out there and they can run down just about anything.”

Onorati will serve as the Jaspers’ starting center fielder, moving from left field where he started his first 152 games at Manhattan. The three-time All-MAAC selection is coming off his best season in Riverdale earning First Team honors after finishing third in the MAAC with a .391 batting average in 2010. He yielded only eight strikeouts in 202 at-bats, while recording 79 hits to become the first player in program history to register two 70+ hit seasons. As a junior, Onorati led Manhattan with 19 doubles and 14 stolen bases. He scored 59 runs, blasted seven home runs and had 51 RBI.

“Mark is an incredible hitter,” Leighton explained. “He always finds a way to get on base. Mark is another guy who will do everything possible to win. Again, we will look to him to be our spark plug, and rely on him to get our offense going.”

McCann, a quick right fielder from Belle Harbor, N.Y., is also one of the top outfielders in the conference. He is coming off his second straight All-MAAC campaign as he started 50 of 51 appearances in 2010 and hit .340 with 10 home runs, 17 doubles and 59 RBI. McCann scored 54 runs and posted 17 multi-hit games last year. McCann was an All-MAAC First Team selection as a sophomore and conference Player of the Year candidate after he broke Manhattan’s single season hits record (85), logged a .388 batting average, smashed 13 home runs, posted 59 RBI and scored 65 runs.

“Mike has a sweet lefty stroke and will be in the middle of our batting order this season,” said Leighton. “We need him to be productive if we expect to succeed. His offensive ability matches his defense. He can run down fly balls in the outfield and has one of the best arms in the conference.”

Vega, a 6’1” 190-pound native of Patchogue, N.Y., takes over left field duties as he looks to build on a productive freshman campaign. He started 13 of 29 appearances in 2010 and

posted a .254 batting average, while stealing seven bases. Vega joined the Jaspers’ Indoor Track & Field team during the offseason to improve his speed. He was a key member of the sprinting unit, which helped Manhattan win the 2011 MAAC Championship. Vega is a tough, hard working player who offers a solid lefty bat in the line up.

Sophomore Joe Rock gives Manhattan another option in the outfield. He is a true competitor who brings speed and a strong arm to the table. The Carmel, N.Y. native made 22 appearances, while starting six games as a freshman. Rock enjoyed a very successful high school career at Kennedy Catholic where he helped the program to a 49-5 record in his last two years and a New York State Class B Championship (2008).

CATCHERSManhattan will look to sophomore catcher

Ramon Ortega to handle the bulk of the catching responsibility. Ortega is coming off his first full-season with the program after suffering a season ending injury in 2009. The Jaspers’ two newcomers freshman Mikey Miranda and Brendan Slattery will compete for time behind the plate.

“Our catchers have very good tools,” stated Leighton. “We are looking for them to be the leaders on the field.”

Ortega is a defensively strong catcher with a good arm. He started 40 of 47 appearances last season and posted 26 RBI, scored 21 runs and had 10 multi-hit games. The Miami native was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on March 15, 2010 after batting .500 with four RBI, helping the Jaspers to wins over Fordham and West Virginia. Ortega was a three-time All-Dade County selection at Christopher Columbus High School.

“With a full-year under his belt, I think Ray is prepared to handle what we need him to do this season,” Leighton emphasized.

Miranda, a product of nationally-ranked Florida Christian High School in Miami, is a solid defensive catcher with a good work ethic. He was an All-Dade County selection in his final two years at Florida Christian. He hit .462 with 22 RBI and eight doubles as a junior and harbored a .400 batting average with 25 RBI during his senior campaign.

“Mikey has the ability to step in right away and our pitchers would not miss a beat,” Leighton noted.

Slattery comes to Manhattan from Danbury, Conn. where he was a three year letterwinner at Brookfield High School. The 6’2” 210-pound sophomore adds depth behind the plate and at first base. Slattery was named All-Southwest Conference and Brookfield’s Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior.

“Brendan had a great off-season. He was swinging the bat well and we hope that continues into the spring,” said Leighton.

PITCHERSManhattan returns a core of talented pitchers

with experience under their belts. Junior Mike Giordano, along with sophomores Eric Luksis and John Soldinger are likely to carry the bulk of the load in the weekend rotation. Newcomers Kevin Bonanni, Jared Hirschberg, Jacob Marchus, Scott McClennan and Dan Feinberg also have shown their ability to contribute in

MARK ONORATI

early season workouts.“A majority of our youth is on the mound, so

with the graduation of four pitchers last year our newcomers will be tested early,” explained Leighton. “Kevin, Jared, Jacob, Scott and Dan have all shown their ability to get batters out at this level and we will likely use them in relief in conference games.”

Giordano is a right hander who is coming off back-to-back successful campaigns in his first two seasons with the program. The Bedford, N.Y. native tied a team-high with six wins in 22 appearances and eight starts last season. He struck out 43 batters in 69.0 innings of action, while recording three saves. Giordano made a splash as a freshman winning his first six career starts. He logged a 4.43 ERA and struck out 32 batters in 61.0 innings during the 2009 campaign.

“Mike is probably one of the most underrated pitchers in the conference. He is as calm as they come on the mound,” Leighton emphasized. “He is also very competitive. Mike has very good command with his fastball. He gives us a great shot to win when he is down in the zone and can throw his breaking ball.”

Luksis, a lefty from Wappingers Falls, N.Y., is expected to be one of the Jaspers’ top returning starters. Last year as a freshman, he made a team-high 11 starts, posted five wins and struck out 44 batters in 70.0 innings pitched. Luksis turned up his game down the stretch, winning four of his last five conference starts, recording a 4.19 ERA and .263 batting average against.

“Eric has very good stuff. With last year’s experience we feel he is ready for a good year,” said Leighton. “His control this winter has been exceptional. Eric is also a good fielder and holds runners well.”

Soldinger, the 2010 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year, is expected to be a key factor in the Jaspers’ starting rotation. The Bay Shore, N.Y. native earned Second Team All-MAAC honors as a freshman after leading Manhattan with a 2.83 ERA and posting five wins. He finished second in the conference with seven saves and struck out 48 batters. Soldinger was named MAAC Rookie of the Week twice in 2010, and he earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors on March 2 after holding #10 Miami scoreless, while striking out five batters to earn a four inning save in his collegiate debut.

“Coming off an excellent freshman year, we will look for John to move into the starting rotation,” stated Leighton. “He is a competitor who challenges hitters. John has superb command and a very good breaking ball.”

Bonnani is a local product from Plainview, N.Y. who lettered three years at Plainview JFK High School. The 6’2” 195-pound right-hander earned All County honors and was the Conference AA-2 Most Valuable Player as a senior after posting a perfect 5-0 record with a 1.90 ERA. He logged 56 strikeouts in 32 innings of work.

Hirshberg, a 6’2” 225-pound freshman from Katonah, N.Y., lettered four years at John Jay Cross River High School. He was a First Team All-New York State Class A and All-Section I honoree as a senior after posting an 8-0 record with 83 strikeouts in 53 innings. He recorded a 0.95 ERA, yielding only nine earned runs.

Marchus comes to Riverdale from Miami Palmetto High School where he posted a 5-0 record with a 1.45 ERA as a senior. He limited

opponents to a .244 batting average against and helped Palmetto to a 20-7 overall record advancing to the 6A District 16 Semifinals.

McClennan is a crafty right-handed pitcher who locates the ball well. He is a product of Cornwall High School where he set a Section IX record with 27 victories over his four years with the program. He posted 11 complete games at Cornwall, including a no-hitter versus Rondout Valley High School. McClennan was a three-time All-New York State selection.

Feinberg, a junior college transfer from Dutchess Community College, will also compete for time on the hill. The right-hander from Goshen, N.Y. was an All-Region XV and All-Mid Hudson Athletic Conference honoree in his last season at Dutchess Community College. He posted a 4-1 record with 35 strikeouts in 40 innings.

Upperclassmen Rob Ardino, Matt Jordan,

Matt Troisi and Taylor Sewitt offer the Jaspers experience out of the bullpen. Ardino, a senior left-hander from White Plains, N.Y., brings leadership to the Manhattan pitching staff. He made 11 appearances last season and was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on May 24, 2010 after pitching the Jaspers to an extra inning victory over Siena in the regular-season finale to clinch a spot in the MAAC Tournament.

Jordan has split time as both a starter and a reliever during his career at Manhattan. The 6’3” 220-pound lefty from Kingston, N.Y. saw limited action last season, but earned a victory at Seton Hall. Troisi, a 6’5” lefty from Brooklyn, looks to rebound after missing the entire 2010 season due to an injury. Sewitt made six appearances and logged 9 2/3 innings out of the bullpen as a sophomore.

Freshman Peter Cappiello, Chris Kalousdian and Michael Martin are additional pitching options for the Jaspers. Cappiello is a crafty left-hander from Glen Cove High School who was an All-County honoree as a senior after posting a 1.88 ERA and recording 74

strikeouts over 54 innings of work. Kalousdian is a two-way player from Manhasset, N.Y. who has good defensive tools and good control on the mound. He was an All-Suffolk County League-5 selection as a senior at Kings Park High School. Martin, a 6’2” lefty from Chaminade High School, has a good change up and adds depth to the bullpen.

SCHEDULEManhattan’s 2011 slate features out-of-

conference contests with powers from the BIG EAST, SEC, Atlantic 10 and Colonial Athletic Association, in addition to the always challenging MAAC schedule.

The Jaspers begin their journey for the program's second MAAC title in Cullowhee, N.C. meeting Southern Conference member Western Carolina (Feb. 25-27). Manhattan returns to the Bronx briefly for its annual contest with cross-town rival Fordham (March 2), before traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Coca-Cola Classic Tournament with Notre Dame and host school Winthrop of the Big South Conference. The Jaspers open the tournament with the Fighting Irish on March 4, followed by a meeting with the Eagles on March 5, and then a doubleheader with both programs on March 6.

Manhattan's most challenging non-conference series may be against SEC powerhouse Tennessee. The Jaspers visit Knoxville, Tenn. for a four-game set with the Vols on March 11-13. Manhattan then returns to the Northeast for contests at NJIT (March 15) and Seton Hall (March 16).

Manhattan will play three games in Philadelphia against LaSalle (March 18), Saint Joseph's (March 19) and Villanova (March 20), before hosting Hofstra for its home opener on March 23 at Van Cortlandt Park. The Jaspers meeting with the Pride will be the final opportunity to tune up before beginning MAAC play at Siena (March 26 & 27).

The Jaspers visit Fairleigh Dickinson (March 29), prior to hosting their first conference series, welcoming Fairfield to Riverdale, N.Y. on April 2 & 3. Manhattan plays Long Island at home on April 5, and then will travel across the George Washington Bridge to meet Saint Peter's (April 9 & 10).

Sacred Heart visits Van Cortlandt Park on April 12, which begins a series of five home dates against the next six opponents. The Jaspers host 2010 MAAC Tournament qualifiers Marist (April 16 & 17) and Canisius (April 22 & 23), two series which are sandwiched around a doubleheader at local rival Columbia (April 20).

Finishing April, Manhattan has New York Institute of Technology (April 26) and Albany (April 27) as road opponents on the 2011 ledger. The Jaspers have added East Tennessee State (April 30 & May 1) to the line up and will travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to meet the Buccaneers who finished third in the Atlantic Sun Conference last season.

Manhattan has Fordham at home on May 3 before it travels to Western New York to meet conference member Niagara (May 7 & 8). The Jaspers play defending MAAC champion Rider at home on May 14 & 15 and complete the regular-season four days later at Iona (May 19 & 20).

The 2011 MAAC Baseball Championships return to Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. from May 25-28.

Kevin Leighton enters his sixth season at the helm of the Manhattan College baseball program. Since his appoint-ment, Leighton has guided the Jaspers to five consecutive 30-win seasons, the program’s first MAAC Championship, two MAAC Regular-Season titles, and most notably he put Manhattan in the national spotlight advancing to the NCAA Regional Final in 2006.

Leighton was named the 24th head coach in team history on August 18, 2005 after serving four years as the Jaspers’ assistant coach. He is the third winningest coach in the program’s 142 years in exis-tence. Leighton was the quickest Jaspers head coach to tally his 100th-career vic-tory, in just three seasons, and also ranks among the youngest Division I coaches to reach the 100-win plateau.

Leighton has mentored 45 All-MAAC recipients since joining the program in 2002, including 29 First Team selections. During his tenure, three Jaspers were named MAAC Pitcher of the Year, two earned MAAC Rookie of the Year honors, one was selected MAAC Player of the Year and one was recognized as MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year. Additionally, two Jaspers received All-America honors and seven were named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans.

Eleven players Leighton has coached have advanced to the professional ranks, and four currently play within a MLB organization.

Under Leighton’s leadership, success has also extended into the classroom as 48 Jaspers have earned MAAC All-Academic status. In 2008 Manhattan was honored with an NCAA Public Recognition Award for ranking in the top-10 percent of all Division I baseball programs in the multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) report.

2010 SEASON REVIEW

The Manhattan College baseball team enjoyed another memorable campaign as went over the 30-win plateau for the fifth straight season and qualified for the program’s eighth consecutive MAAC Tournament. Nearly unbeatable at home, the Jaspers won 15 straight games during the season at Van Cortlandt Park which tied for the third longest streak in NCAA Division I at the time. The 2010 campaign also featured individual highlights as Kevin Nieto (257) shattered the Jaspers’ all-time hits record and head coach Kevin Leighton went over the 150 career win mark in just five seasons at the helm.

Nieto earned All-MAAC honors for the fourth consecutive season and was joined on the First Team by juniors Mark Onorati and Chad Salem. Seniors Anthony Armenio, Tom Costigan, junior Mike McCann and freshman John Soldinger were named to the All-MAAC Second Team. Additionally, the conference

tabbed Soldinger the MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year for his superb season out of the Jasper bullpen.

The Jaspers gave a preview of what was to come in 2010 when the squad picked up its first win of the season at No. 10 Miami, serving the nationally ranked Hurricanes their first loss (12-7) on Feb. 28. The win marked Manhattan’s first over a ranked opponent since 2006 when the Jaspers defeated #6 Nebraska and Cornhuskers starter Joba Chamberlain in the NCAA Tournament.

Manhattan proceeded to win six of its next seven games, including series victories at Delaware and BIG EAST member West Virginia. Five days later, the Jaspers defeated its second BIG EAST opponent of the year knocking off Seton Hall, 3-2.

The Jaspers saved some of their superb play down the stretch run as Manhattan won 14 of its final 19 contests of the regular-season. To qualify for the MAAC Championships,

Manhattan was forced to make one of the biggest comebacks in program history as it erased a 12 run deficit in the final game of the regular-season to knock off Siena at Van Cortlandt Park in a 19-18 extra inning triumph. The Jaspers carried their late inning heroics into the postseason using two ninth inning home runs by Onorati and Nieto to defeat Marist, 6-5, before having the season come to a premature end being eliminated the next day by Canisius.

Manhattan graduated one of the program’s winningest classes in program history in seniors Anthony Armenio, Tom Costigan, Mike Gazzola, Zac Goyer, Tom Moran and Kevin Nieto who compiled 131 wins and two MAAC Regular-Season championships over their four years. Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200.

Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English.

As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and

lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education.

A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).

A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes enters his 23rd year as director of athletics.

Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball pro-grams have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and wom-en’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington.

As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and

offensive end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tournament appearances in baseball and basket-ball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhat-tan, Byrnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, at one time the sponsor-ing body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Administration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. Doug Straley was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in August 2009, after serving as Manhattan's Director of Sports Medicine for the previous six years. Straley supervises the athletic training of the 300+ student-athletes who compete for Manhattan’s 19 Division I athletic teams.

Prior to his arrival in Riverdale, Straley served as the director of sports medicine at Manhattanville College in nearby Purchase, NY. At Manhattanville, he coordinated the rehabilitation, prevention, and management of athletic injuries for over 250 intercollegiate NCAA Division III student-athletes.

Before his tenure at Manhattanville, Straley worked for three years as the assistant director of sports medicine at Assumption College. He assisted with the medical care of the athletic program’s 19 Division II varsity sport teams.

Straley, a 1998 graduate of Northeastern University, worked as a student athletic trainer during his undergraduate years. In 1999, he received a master of science degree in athletic training from University of Tennessee at

Chattanooga. Additionally, Straley served as the head athletic

trainer for the Westchester Wildfire, a United States Basketball League (USBL) team coached by former New York Knick John Starks.

Straley had been published on numerous occasions, and has made several presentations based upon his research in the field of Athletic Training.

Straley holds Athletic Training licenses in New York, Massachusetts, and Georgia, and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, as an Athletic Trainer, and in CPR and First Aid. A decorated Eagle Scout, Straley won the Koko Kassabian award while at Northeastern for outstanding achievement in leadership, scholarship, and professional development.

A native of Newton, Mass., Straley currently resides in Dobbs Ferry, NY with his wife Jennifer and their daughter Annabelle.

Lindsay Darcy enters her first year as academic advisor for the Manhattan College Athletic Department. Darcy manages the academic support for Manhattan’s 300+ student-athletes, a role which has helped the department rank among the nation’s best according to several NCAA measures of academic success. Darcy’s duties include assisting student-athletes in class scheduling, monitor their academic progress, oversee the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and coordinate tutoring and other special needs.

Prior to this appointment, Darcy worked as Manhattan’s compliance coordinator since the 2007-2008 academic year. In this role, she was responsible for monitoring and regulating NCAA eligibility.

Darcy (nee Peirson) earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in 2005. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange field hockey team, and earned a Big East Scholar-Athlete selection all four years. In 2001, she earned All-America honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association (NFHCA). At the conclusion of her final season with the Orange, Darcy was selected to the All-Big East Second Team.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 30th year of competition dur-ing the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s bas-ketball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola Univer-sity Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake Univer-sity, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC Basketball Championships return to the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. for 2011, with Springfield’s MassMutual Center preparing to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excel-lent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTSIn June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for

student-athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena.

In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as three associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova and Wagner.

Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the

spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Rob-ert Morris will begin competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members – Albany, Boston Uni-versity and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC mem-bers Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.

ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS

The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholar-ships for academic achievement

and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999.

First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regu-larly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and the Sun National Bank Center. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where both the men’s and women’s soccer championships will be contested in the fall of 2010, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the 2011 MAAC Baseball Cham-pionship. This year, the MAAC will take its volleyball championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 75 NIT appearances and 45 NCAA appearances. In addition, Fairfield represented the league last season in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament while the Fairfield women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basket-ball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team fin-ished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, ex-panding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc. to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, multimedia content and an online merchandise store.

The MAAC President for the 2010-2011 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s College. Ed McLaughlin, Director of Athletics at Niagara University, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Karin Torchia, Associate Ath-letic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Rider University will serve as Vice Chair.
