season outlook‘restore the glory’ continues

The University of Tennessee at Chatta-nooga football team has experienced a number of new highs over the last two seasons. The Mocs have put together back-to-backwinningmarksforthefirsttime in nearly 20 years while attendance at Finley Stadium is breaking records with each game.

This offseason is no different. Chat-tanooga is hearing talk of preseason rankings, preseason All-Americans, Walter Payton Award candidates and the playoffs all over the Scenic City. Ex-pectations are high and the Mocs are welcoming the pressure.

“Our goal is to win the Southern Confer-ence and make the playoffs,” said Head Coach Russ Huesman. “We have the talent to play with anyone in the country. Our guys are putting in the work in the offseason and hopefully we will see that payoffonthefield.”

Chattanooga opens with a trip to Ne-braska on Sept. 3 before hosting pre-season top-10 Jacksonville State on Sept. 10. Look for another big crowd at Finley Stadium when the Gamecocks come to town.

UTC’s schedule is loaded with strong teams at the beginning of the year, in-cluding a Sept. 17 visit to preseason top-25 Eastern Kentucky and a trip to potential No. 1 Appalachian State on Sept. 24. The Mocs host The Citadel on Oct. 1 before traveling to another poten-tial No. 1 in Georgia Southern on Oct. 8.

The rest of the Mocs’ home slate in-cludes Western Carolina (Oct. 15), Fur-man (Oct. 29) and top-10 Wofford (Nov. 19). UTC also has road games at Elon (Oct. 27) and Samford (Nov. 5).

“Last year, we had one of the toughest schedules in the country and I think you will see that again this season,” said Huesman. “Playing such a tough slate is what kept us in the playoff hunt until

thefinalgameandIthinkthatwillbethecase again.”

UTC’s offensive future looks bright with thereturnof18lettermenandfivestart-ers. Among those coming back are se-niors B.J. Coleman and Joel Bradford. Coleman is a Walter Payton Award can-didate and one of the top quarterbacks in the country. Bradford is a consensus preseason All-American and the lead-ing returning receiver in the FCS. Also returning is right tackle Adam Miller, a preseason All-SoCon selection.

“We are going to be exciting on offense again,” added Huesman. “We have one of the best tandems in the country in Joel and B.J. and we have some guys at other positions who can do things. It is going to be fun to watch.”

Senior Ryan Consiglio leads a defense that welcomes back eight starters. He is a preseason first teamAll-SouthernConference selection joined by All-So-

Con picks Nick Davison, Kadeem Wise and Chris Lewis-Harris.

Davison will anchor the defensive line while Wise and Lewis-Harris patrol the secondary. Senior Jordan Tippit will also give the Mocs a very experienced group of defensive backs.

“We have a lot of guys back on de-fense,” said Huesman. “We are going to be a little thin on the defensive line, but from the linebackers on back, there are a lot of good players who have seen a ton of snaps.”

With the talent returning and another bumper crop of redshirts and recruits ready to hit the field, the Mocs haveraised the bar on expectations in Chat-tanooga. The city is behind its home-town team again and would love nothing more than to have a playoff team for the firsttimesince1984.

Senior receiver Joel Bradford is a consensus preseason All-American. The Chattanooga native set a school-record with 1,284 receiving yards in 2010, earning a spot on the AP All-American 3rd Team.

oFFensethe 2011 Mocs

There is no quarterback controversy in Chatta-nooga with the return of senior captain B.J. Cole-man. A 2011 Walter Payton Award Candidate, Coleman has a chance to leave his mark all over the Chattanooga record books. In just two seasons, Coleman has thrown for over 5,300 yards and is second all-time at UTC with 43 touchdown passes. He has led the Mocs to back-to-backwinningseasonsforthefirsttimeinnearly20 years and is looking to guide Chattanooga to theplayoffsforthefirsttimesince1984.

“I feel great about our quarterback situation,” stat-ed Huesman. “B.J. Coleman was a good player two years ago. Now he is entering his third year as a starter and we have big expectations for him.”

Sophomore Graham Nichols is the only other cur-rent Moc to take a snap in the last two years. He saw action in three games last season and was also the offensive MVP of the last two spring games.

Freshman Terrell Robinson will also battle for the back up role. After redshirting in 2010, he was sidelined during the spring following wrist surgery and has some catching up to do. However, his athleticism gives the Mocs a different weapon to use in the offensive attack.

“Graham has shown that he can make the throws we need him to make,” added Huesman. “Terrell is going to battle and we will see where it goes.”

Freshman Jacob Huesman also has a bright fu-turebutislikelytoredshirthisfirstcollegiatesea-son.

The Mocs played running back by committee last year and that will again be the case in 2011. Ju-nior J.J. Jackson is the returning starter, getting thenodfivetimesayearago.FellowjuniorChrisAwuah was the starter in 2009 and those two will again battle for carries.

Jackson posted 3.5 yards per carry with three touchdowns. Awauh had less total rushing yards but scored a touchdown passing, receiving, rush-ing and on special teams in 2010.

“The tailback situation is good,” said Huesman. “We’ve got two guys who have played a lot of foot-ball and have gotten a lot of snaps. We feel good about their ability to make plays, but also their de-pendability at that position. We feel like they can handle the protection and hang on to the football, things that you want from a tailback.”

Threeothernewcomersfightingforplayingtimein-clude sophomore Desmond Walker and freshmen Kendrix Huitt and Marquis Green. Walker sat out last season after transferring from Alabama A&M. Huitt is a three-star prep recruit, while Green was an offensive MVP as a senior in high school.

Senior Thomas Green is pencilled in as the starter at fullback. He has played in nearly every game the last two seasons, but had just one carry at Au-burn in 2010.

“ItisfinallyThomasGreen’schancetoshine,”ex-plained Huesman. “We think he is going to have a really good year.”

Sophomore Vershawn Cosby and freshman Taha-rin Tyson will compete for the No. 2 spot.

Therearesomebigholes tofillon theoffensiveline, thanks to the loss of three starters to gradu-ation. Among that group, former left tackle Chris Harr is currently in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite the losses, UTC still has plenty of talent up front. Junior Adam Miller is a preseason All-SoCon pick, returning to his starting role at right tackle. Fellow junior Austin Wilson started at both guard and center last year, and will also be in the starting lineup.

“We will be solid on the offensive line. Losing the three we lost was tough, but I think we will be good. Miller and Wilson are really good players who have seen a lot of action.”

Senior Omre Harris has 12 career starts under his belt and will battle at left guard. Tennessee trans-fer Kevin Revis could fill the other guard spot, while junior Will Hewitt has also made two career starts at guard.

“Omre is coming back and if we can keep him healthy, he will help us,” added Huesman. “We also think Revis can be really good.”

Freshman Taylor Dodds is likely to take over at left tackle. He has a solid mix of size and speed, but will need to gain some experience quickly.

Freshmen Devin Caldwell and Brandon Morgan could factor in at the tackle positions while fresh-man Brandon Morgan and sophomore Hunter Dockery are battling among the guards. Also look for freshmen Shaun Hill and Patrick Sutton to get into the mix at center.

The most heralded returner on the team can be found in senior receiver Joel Bradford. Last sea-son, he set a new Chattanooga standard with 1,284 receiving yards, second most in the NCAA. He twice broke the school’s single game record, firstwith254yardsagainstEasternKentuckyandthen 274 yards at Furman.

Bradford is a preseason All-American after earning third team recognition from the Associated Press in 2010.

“It starts with Joel,” stated Huesman. “What a great year he had last year. He has to have that same type of year again for us to be really good on of-fense. He has had a great summer, worked hard and shown great leadership. I don’t see any rea-son why he can’t have an All-American year again.”

Sophomore Marlon Anthony is set for a breakout year, after grabbing 14 catches for 195 yards and three touchdowns last season. At 6-5 and 205 pounds, he provides a big target and should be a reliable option on offense.

“Marlon has to step up,” said Huesman. “He is a big, talented receiver who we think can be a domi-nating player in this league.”

Also returning are senior Sloan Allison and juniors Jeff Veres and Jarrett Burns. Allison has the best catch-to-touchdown ratio you could expect, making three grabs in 2010, all for scores. Veres led the Mocs in scoring, but he was the kicker last sea-son. He returns to his natural position and will be in the mix. Burns played in every game, mostly on special teams, and is settling in as an option after making the switch from defensive back last year.

A number of freshmen could also earn their way ontothefield,includingBryantBelew,TommyHud-son and Ron Moore.

“We are going to probably have to play a freshman thisseason,”explainedHuesman.“Butthatisfinebecause this is a very strong group with a lot of speed.”

Freshman Faysal Shafaat and junior Shawn Stackhousewillfightforthetightendrole.Sha-faat is an athletic option with great hands. Stack-house, a transfer from Tennessee, is a bigger body with more collegiate experience. “We have two guys in the program we feel really good about,” said Huesman. They are going to go back and forth all year, but both will play.

A pair of true freshman will also compete at the position, including Jarrod Coleman and Troy Dye. Both are likely to redshirt but have the talent to produce if called upon.

The Mocs have two talented starters return-ing to the defensive line in senior Nick Da-vison and junior Josh Williams. Davison is a preseason second-team All-SoCon selec-tion while Williams was second team pick following his freshman campaign.

“We think Nick is ready for a really good year,” said Huesman. “He was solid for us last season and has a chance to be a really good player in this league.”

Williams has 12.0 career sacks and is just 3.0 shy of the school record. He played last season with an injured shoulder but is back to 100% for the start of fall camp.

“Josh was hurt for almost all of last year, but still played through it,” continued Huesman. “He had surgery and missed spring practice, but is ready for another big year.”

Freshmen Keon Reed and Devin Scates will battle for playing time at tackle while fel-low freshmen Davis Tull and Zach Rayl and senior De’Markus Lee will see time on the ends.

“Davis Tull has all of the tools to be a good one,” added Huesman. “We almost played him on a number of occasions last season and we are glad we didn’t.”

After going through the 2010 season very thin at linebacker, the Mocs are looking pretty solid for this position in 2011. Leading the group is senior captain Ryan Consiglio. After posting 110 tackles last season, he is a preseasonfirstteamAll-SoConchoice.

“Ryan is an all-conference player and he will have an all-conference season again this year,” stated Huesman. “He is a team cap-tain and a leader of this group.”

Junior Shane Heatherly and sophomore Gunner Miller are also set to return to their starting roles. Miller was on the SoCon All-Freshman team despite only plaing in eight games due to an injury.

“I am excited about this group,” stated Hues-man. “We have some guys who have played a lot and are very talented. We have guys who can play multiple positions so you will seealotofguysonthefield.”

The Dothard brothers, Wes and J.D., will both be pushing for action. Wes was im-pressive during his freshman season. Older brother J.D., a senior, has 23 starts at defen-sive back and linebacker under his belt.

Freshmen Keith Mayes and Muhasibi Wa-keel will also be in the mix after sitting out as redshirts in 2010.

One of the most talented areas for the 2011 Mocs will be the secondary. Despite the departure of two-time first teamAll-SoConcornerbackBusterSkrine,afifthrounddraftpickoftheClevelandBrowns,UTCwillfieldan accomplished group of defensive backs.

Senior captains Jordan Tippit and Chris Lewis-Harris are back at the safety posi-tions.TippitwasafirstteamAll-SoConpickin 2009 and played most of last season with an ankle injury. He is back at 100% and looking to add to his eight career intercep-tions. Lewis-Harris starts his senior year as a preseason second All-SoCon choice.

“We have two great leaders back there that will keep everyone in check,” stated Hues-man. “Tip and Chris should have monster years for us and will lead our secondary.”

Also returning is sophomore Kadeem Wise, the 2010 SoCon Freshman of the Year. He broke Huesman’s UTC frosh record with six interceptions last year and is a preseason all-conference choice.

Junior Robert Harrison and sophomores Chaz Moore and Don Cope will battle for time at the other corner position. A number of others will also be in the mix, including freshmen Clim Robbins and T.J. Thompson at the corners and sophomore C.J. Murrell and freshmen Sema’je Kendall, Cam Mont-gomery and Zach McCarter at safety.

The Mocs sacked 2010 Heisman Trophy Winner Cam Newton in last year’s matchup against the FBS Champion Auburn Tigers. Chattanooga’s defense was one of only two teams to sack the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft at least three times in 2010.

Chattanooga has a pair of former Tennes-see Mr. Football Kickers of the Year leading its special teams. Senior Mike Hammons, a two-year starter, returns at punter. After averaging 38.4 yards per kick last season, he is looking to return to his 2009 form when he put up 40.1 yards per punt.

Freshman Nick Pollard will take over the place-kicking duties. He was set for the job last season, but a nagging hip injury side-lined him for the year. He went 1-2 on PATs against Appalachian State before being forced to redshirt the year.

“We have an experienced punter in Ham-mons and a talented kicker in Pollard,” said Huesman. “Hammons has proven that he can put up solid numbers and we are ex-pecting a big year from Pollard.

Senior Brock Oliver is entering his fourth season as the longsnapper for the Mocs. He has improved each season at UTC and will continue to handle the starting duties.

Sophomore Blake Coddington has been pushing Oliver each of the last two seasons. Heisbattlingforhisfirsttimeonthefieldandcould crack the lineup.

“There is a lot of competition between Brock and Blake,” stated Huesman. “Brock is the guy, but Blake is a very capable backup. Their competition has made that position get better each year.”

Senior Sloan Allison returns as the holder. He has held that position for the last three seasons.

Senior Joel Bradford is back as the primary punt returner in 2011. Last season he aver-aged 8.9 yards per return and was No. 11 in the nation in 2009 when he put up 13.1 yards per return.

Junior Chris Awauh could take over as the primary kickoff returner. He had four touch-es last season, averaging 15.2 yards per re-turn. He also averaged 20 yards per return as a freshman in 2009.

“Joel is going to be back there returning punts again,” stated Huesman. “We have a lotofguyswhocouldfillinonkickoffreturn, but Awuah is the most experienced of that group.”
