Founded in 1819 by Captain Aldridge

Partridge, Norwich University is nestled

in the Green Mountains in Northfield,

Vermont. Norwich is the nation’s oldest

private military college.

Today Norwich University offers edu-

cational opportunities for both undergrad-

uate and graduate students. The

undergraduate experience offers a choice

of being in the Corps of Cadets or as a

civilian student. Both lifestyles are inte-

grated within the classroom, athletic

teams and student organizations.

Norwich’s undergraduate student pop-

ulation of 2200 hail from 40 different

states and 20 foreign countries. Eighty-

one percent of the 157 faculty hold termi-

nal degrees. Norwich boasts a student to

faculty ratio of 14:1 and is proud of its

long tradition of excellence in teaching

and personal attention given to students.

Thirty academic programs, including

a teacher/education licensure program,

and four ROTC programs are offered.

Norwich is the birthplace of the ROTC

program due to the innovative educa-

tional methods of Alden Partridge.

As an NCAA Division III school, the

University sponsors varsity athletic com-

petition in men’s and women’s ice

hockey, football, men’s and women’s bas-

ketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s

and women’s cross country, baseball,

softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse,

women’s volleyball, wrestling, men’s ten-

nis and men’s and women’s swimming

and diving, as well as men’s and women’s

rugby.

On campus Norwich offers 80 clubs

and organizations including academic and

professional societies, special interest

clubs and a range of religious, military

and community service organizations.

Under its School of Graduate Studies,

Norwich offers 10 online graduate de-

grees at the Master’s level and one certifi-

cate program. Enrollment in the graduate

school is 1200 students.

Norwich University is located in

Northfield, Vt., just 15 miles from Mont-

pelier, the state capital.

Norwich Coaching Staff

John Rhoades enters his sixth

season as the head baseball coach

at Norwich University in the spring

of 2011. Rhoades also serves as the

offensive coordinator for the NU

football team.

In 2010, Rhoades oversaw a Cadets team that qualified

for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)

Tournament for the first time since 2005.

Prior to coaching collegiately, Rhodes was an assistant

coach at Windsor (Vt.) High School from 1996-98. He

also served as the head coach of the Hartford (Vt.)

American Legion team in the summer of 1996.

As a football coach, Rhoades has made stops at Ply-

mouth State, his alma mater New Hampshire and Bow-

doin College.

Rhoades earned a degree in Physical Education from the

University of New Hampshire in 1993.

Rhoades resides in Northfield with his wife, Annette,

and their daughter, Ashlyn. He enjoys playing golf and

spending time with his family.

2011 marks Bill Russell's third

season as an assistant coach of the

Norwich University baseball team.

Russell also serves as the defensive

line coach and special teams coordi-

nator for the Norwich football team.

Before coaching, Russell played varsity baseball at Ken-

nebunk (Maine) High School. He served as team captain

his senior year.

Russell played four years of college football at Mount

Ida, serving as a team captain during his senior season

of 2004.

Russell, who graduated from Mount Ida in 2005 with a

bachelor's degree in Child Development, was on the

Mustangs football coaching staff from 2005-08 before

moving on to Norwich in the fall of that year.

Russell and his wife Deanna reside in Northfield with

Hudson (6), Lydia (4), and their two dogs, Tebow and

Keisha. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing and watch-

ing Boston Red Sox baseball. He is also an avid Florida

Gators fan.

Col. David J. Scarchilli (RET) en-

ters his second season assisting with

the Norwich baseball team in 2011.

A native of Utica, N.Y., Scarchilli re-

ceived a commission in the U.S.

Army through the Norwich University Reserve Officers

Training Corps (ROTC) program following his graduation

from Norwich in 1981. He earned a Bachelor of Science

degree in Physical Education during his time at NU.

Scarchilli also holds a Master of Arts degree in Business

Management from Webster University (St Louis, Mo.) as

well as a Master’s degree in Strategic Resource Manage-

ment from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces

(Washington, D.C.). His military education includes the

U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (resident)

and the National Defense University (resident).

After more than 25 years on active duty, Scarchilli settled

with his family in Tampa, Fla., where he was an Army

JROTC Instructor before becoming the Director of Army

Instruction in Hillsborough County.

Once a Cadet, always a Cadet, Scarchilli accepted the po-

sition of Assistant Commandant of Cadets at his alma

mater in August 2009. He presently serves as the Staff

Principal Advisor to the Cadet 3rd (Rook) Battalion.

Col. Scarchilli is married to the former Christine Nelson.

The couple resides in Northfield with their son, Frank. The

family thoroughly enjoys the four seasons and being a part

of the Norwich community.

2011 Norwich Baseball

2011 Season Preview

The Norwich University baseball team is set to head

out west as it will be traveling to Arizona for the 2011

edition of its annual spring break trip. It marks a depar-

ture from the team’s usual warm weather destination of

Florida. Norwich will begin 2011 play with two games

versus Dakota Wesleyan on Monday, March 14th, at the

Tucson Invitational Games’ Kino Sports Complex in

Tucson, Arizona. The doubleheader is the first of six

scheduled games for NU in the “Grand Canyon State.”

Norwich returns 18 players off a squad that went 8-

28 overall a year ago and advanced to the Great North-

east Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament with a

5-9 conference mark. The appearance in the tourney was

the Cadets first since 2005.

Seniors Austin Shaw (Yarmouth, Maine) and Ian

Caird (New London, Conn.) anchor a veteran-laden

Norwich starting rotation. Junior Seth Knihtila (West-

minster, Mass.), sophomores Jonathan Philbrook

(Rochester, Mass.) and Connor Mahon (Hopkinton,

Mass.) along with freshman Nicholas Kotula

(Catonsville, Md.) round out the starters.

Juniors Alex Cardoza (Cicero, Ill.), sophomores Brad

Hudson (Eugene. Ore.) and Ben Kleiner (Chesire,

Mass.) and freshman Devin Cilley (Tunbridge, Vt.) will

make up the middle-relief corps.

Senior Ryan Kelly (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and junior Don

Dibastiani (White Hall, Md.) will man the back end of

the Cadet bullpen. Both experienced arms should help

Norwich lock down defensively in the later innings.

A major task for the Cadets will be filling the shoes

of graduated seniors Rob Knox, James Ramsay and

David Wygonski. Knox was both the team’s offensive

catalyst and its emotional leader from his spot behind

the plate in 2010, while Ramsay provided a consistent

threat on the basepaths from his leadoff position and

Wygonski mentored the younger pitchers when he was-

n’t on the mound or playing first base.

“Losing three key players to graduation was a big

blow to the team and will be a challenge for the players

competing at those positions,” says head coach John

Rhoades. “However, I feel this team, with its work ethic

and abilities, can overcome the loss of these individu-

als.”

Sophomore OF Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill.) is

expected to help replace Knox’s big bat in the lineup.

Shimkus is coming off a stellar freshman campaign in

which he batted .378 and finished second to Knox in

almost every major offensive statistical category.

Junior Mitch Blair will be expected to step into the

role of the team’s primary backstop after backing up

Knox his first two years. Fellow junior David Maxfield

should also see time behind the plate.

Senior Travis Dyke (Lewiston, Maine) will be a main-

stay in left field after starting all of last year and majority

of 2009 at that spot. Shimkus will again patrol right

field, while freshman Charles Schaub (East Hampton,

Conn.) will most likely get the nod in center field when

Maxfield is at catcher.

Led by senior first baseman Dustin Fleming (Brid-

port, Vt.), the entire Cadet infield enters 2011 with

plenty of game experience. Junior Joe Sleeman

(Rochester, N.Y.) moves over to third base while class-

mates Corey Shearer (Montague, Mass.) and Sean

Kennedy (Madison, N.J.) will hold down the shortstop

and second base positions, respectively. Freshmen Jor-

dan Patton (Chandler, Ariz.) and Kyle Fitzsimmons

(Stratham, N.H.) should push the older middle infielders

for playing time right away. With so many returning

starters, the Norwich infield should be strong both de-

fensively and at the plate this spring.

Rhoades expects his team to step up once again this

year after seeing some success last year. The team is

hungry to again qualify for the GNAC Tournament and

to advance past the opening round. The seasoned pitch-

ing staff, combined with a skilled group of returning po-

sition players makes this one of his most talented, and

veteran, teams that he has had.

“My vision for this team is for them to bring a good

attitude, improve daily and play as a team,” says

Rhoades. “By bringing these qualities to the field daily,

our hope is to host a GNAC playoff game and compete

for the conference championship.”

tered a .312 batting average in 16 at-bats ... also earned

three walks and was hit by a pitch in recording a .450

on-base percentage ... had six putouts in six chances de-

fensively with no throwing errors.

BEFORE NORWICH: Played four years of varsity

baseball at Middlebury Union High School ... also was

a four-year letterwinner with the football team ... was a

team captain for both baseball and football as a senior

... three-year member of the Addison County American

Legion team, which captured the Vermont State Amer-

ican Legion baseball championship in 2008 ... recipient

of the George "Dud" Phinney Sportmanship award in

2007 and the American Legion Norther Vermont District

Sportsmanship Award in 2008.

PERSONAL: Son of Randall and Michele Fleming ...

with 122 at-bats and 27 runs scored ... third in batting

percentage (.254), hits (31) and T-3rd in homeruns (one)
