It’s Apple Picking Time! Put October 8th on your calendar for a fun filled day at the Eckert’s Farm in Belleville, Ill, it will be a great drive, good eats, and lots of fall fun picking apples, shopping at the country store or just hanging out with the best people in the world—the Gateway Miata Club. We plan on meeting at 8:30 am. and departing at 9:00 a.m. (I know its early, but there is nothing like a crisp fall morning). I am still working on the route and the departure place, but mark your calendar for a great fall event. Watch you email for an announce with more details.

The Roads were dampened, but not our Spirits!

The event called “Indy Miata invades St. Louis” began Friday, Sept 9. Indy cars began motoring into the Doubletree Hotel in St. Louis toward late afternoon. We were greeted by members of the Gateway (St. Louis) Miata Club. The Fox and Hound Restaurant was the place of choice for supper. We ate in the game room surrounded by four large screen TV’s. Mmmmm. Good food, good com-pany. Saturday morning we were hard pressed to keep our tops down because of inter-mittent drizzle. But regardless, the intrepid Gateway Club offered drives to Au-gusta, MO, west of St. Louis. The drives were categorized Faster, Fast, and Sce-nic. So, why did the Scenic cars lap the Fast cars? (They must have made a stop along the way?) Schluersburg Road – can you pronounce that? Can you pronounce it well and fast, and not have those following you wonder what you’re saying? And, can you pronounce it for a police officer without getting into trouble? Some of the Mis-souri roads are a challenge. Saturday afternoon we spotted small blue patches of sky. Tops down! The three categories drove to Washington, MO. This could have been labeled the “nature drive.” We saw turkeys, turtles, buzzards, skunks, and HORSES! This area has many, many large houses with even larger pastures for horses. It was difficult for all to spy these critters on such lovely curvy roads! Ask Eric about his rac-coon-road (kill)-“roast”. Or ask Tom and Laura to describe it for you. While we were standing in the hotel parking lot deciding a supper venue, a wed-ding bus pulled in with a happy party. Before we knew what was happening, the wedding photographer was requesting that we line the Miatas up as background for a photo with the Wedding Party … and, oh, let’s have all the drivers surround the happy couple for the photo too! So the clubs have been forever memorialized in the wedding portraits of Joe and Missy! Since we still had a few moments before supper, we drove to a new park in the area. The giant sculpture of head, hands, foot, and knee was fascinating for all. Some were more fascinated than others. Right, Larry?

After supper at Houlihan’s, we drove closer into St. Louis for dessert at the world famous, Ted Drewe’s Frozen Custard – Home of the Original Concrete! Ah, more good food, good company! Mmmmm. Sunday morning the sun quickly burned off the fog and we were off to the his-toric town of Kimmswick and the Blue Owl Restaurant. Again, great curvy roads… with tops down! The Blue Owl has great food and especially great des-serts (as in 12” high pies). Ah, yum… more good food. But, unfortunately we had to bid goodbye to our new and old friends and head for home. We had a great time – the 8 cars from Indy and our Gateway hosts! We were a fun group and, as with other Miata Clubs that we have encountered, we blended well and enjoyed each other’s company and CARS! Kathy & Steve Crouse
