WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

The construction, design and fuel load of modern residences present today’s firefighters with new challenges and dangers. This presentation will examine why firefighters may have to change some of their tactics when fighting fires involving modern lightweight “engineered” construction. Most fire departments in this country are suburban and seriously understaffed; consequently they cannot implement some of the personnel-intensive tactics that big city fire departments use.

Students will learn: – How to conduct size-up before committing limited resources – Water supply options – Considerations for apparatus placement – Where to position the first attack hoseline

Some specific fire problems will be addressed, such as how to fight fires in the attics of “Mc Mansions“, tactics for fighting basement fires, and options for fires in attached garages.

Dwellings and Commercial “StripDwellings and Commercial “Strip--Malls”Malls”

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

As a follow-up to the information presented in the morning session, the afternoon will look specifically at firefighting in two specific types of structures: Multiple Dwellings and Commercial Strip Malls. Students will learn about specific items they need to evaluate during size-up (HVAC, sprinklers, multiple entrances/stairways, etc) and hoseline stretch considerations (path to reach fire area, extending hoselines, using gated wyes, etc). We will discuss features about specific areas that can be found in these types of structures, such as exterior hallways, balconies, and courtyards.

Social Media In The Fire ServiceSocial Media In The Fire Service

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

Fire Departments are slowly understanding the benefits of social media. However, too few departments have taken full advantage of what social media can do to spread their mission and vision with the community. Social media is the perfect way to connect with their citizens and those they serve to enforce positive public relations.

Whether a department is starting out with social media or looking for more puzzle pieces to make It all work with minimum effort, this class will help departments get on track and stay on track with social media.

– Learn why facebook, twitter, and other social mediums are free platforms to help spread the word about news, information, events, hiring, recruitment, retention, fire prevention, and more.

– Understand how to minimize the man-hours it takes to keep a social media network going and growing.

– Examples will be given on what works and what doesn’t work for departments getting involved in social media.

The class will also cover how to prevent misuse by firefighters. Resources will be given to help departments get off on the right foot with social media. In addition, we will discuss where your information might go once you share it.

Social media is a tremendous way for fire departments to share who they are and what they do with the people the serve and others beyond their locale. This class will discuss the best practices for getting started as well as maintaining a social media presence.
