RIGHT TO KNOW: In accordance with the federal Right to Know Act, the following chart outlines the number of recipients of athletic grants in each program. The number of athletes is broken down by sex and race. The chart represents the number of students in each area; it does not reflect the dollar amounts of aid granted. Also, those receiving grants for more than one sport are only counted once. NO: Non-resident Alien; BL: Black -- Non-Hispanic; WH: White -- Non-Hispanic; OT: Other; HI: Hispanic; UN: Unknown; AM: American Indian; BI: Bi-Racial.

When the Park University base-ball team takes the field in the Lone Star State for the first time

in mid-February, it will be the first time the Pirates have seen a baseball field since leaves were turning to autumn colors and children were finalizing their Halloween costume plans. Add to it a host of newcomers on the 2011 roster, and you’ll see why Park head baseball coach Cary Lundy is eager to see what he’s got in a live game for the 2011 season. Lundy will get that chance Feb. 19-21 in Texas, against Central Christian College, Dallas Christian College and Jarvis Christian College. “Our schedule is tough,” Lundy said. “Any time you go south for six games to start the year, those teams have been on the field for a few weeks. We haven’t been on a baseball field since last fall, so we have our work cut out for us in Texas.” The Pirates enter 2011 with nine vet-eran players from the 2010 roster, includ-ing six seniors, three of which that spent time in the middle of the order last season for the Pirates. Ryan Rush (St. Joseph, Mo./MCC-Ma-ple Woods) was Park’s RBI leader in 2010, belting eight home runs and driving in 41 with a .340 average, and he’ll be joined in the lineup by fellow senior first baseman Mike Elliott (Olathe, Kan./MidAmerica Naz-arene), who hit .344 and drove in 26 runs in just 29 games. Elliott also hit five home runs and had six doubles. Ricky Alfonso (Tucson, Ariz./Cochise College) also returns for the 2011 season as the team’s returning starting center fielder, and Alfonso will look to expand on his.328 average from last season,

where he drove in 26 runs with 10 extra-base hits (six doubles, two triples and two home runs). Scott Tatro is another senior who returns from last year’s lineup af-ter primarily playing third base late in the year. Jimmy Smelcer, a sophomore mid-dle infielder from Liberty, Mo., comes back after an injury-shortened season in 2010 where he hit .347 with two dou-bles and 18 RBIs. Smelcer be-gan the year as Park’s third baseman, but af-ter an injury to an up-per classman on the middle in-field, Smelcer found him-self as Park’s start-ing short-stop in his freshman year, earning the des-ignation of Amer-ican Midwest C o n f e r e n c e Freshman of the Year.

Senior Sam Tracy (Marion, Iowa/Ells-worth CC) and junior Philip Garrison (Kan-sas City, Mo./William Jewell) return after splitting time behind the plate last year, and

newcomer Wesley Moody (Bro-ken Arrow, Okla.) could also

compete for time behind the plate after transferring from NOC-Tonkawa. Cody Cobb, an outfield-

er from Kansas City, Kan., transferred to Park

from the University of Central Mis-souri and should also see time in the lineup, and for the first time in many years,

eight freshmen could see time on the field for the

Pirates in 2011. “We’re a very

young team, but that’s not always a bad thing,” Lundy said.

“There are a lot of good young players on this team battling for

spots on the field, and our lineup

is going to be pretty good. We return the middle

of our o r d e r

f r o m l a s t

Ricky Alfonso (above) returns to the Park lineup after starting in center field last season for the Pirates, and should help Park at the top of the order as well as in the outfield in 2011. Ryan Rush (below) also returns to the lineup after leading the Pirates in home runs (8) and runs batted in (41). Rush leads the Pirates into the 2011 season as the team’s likely starting first baseman.

season, so offensively we should be okay. We’ve also got some new guys that will help us right away.” The lineup loses an outfielder from last year in Cody Spaulding, as well as an All-AMC selection in Darian Sandford on the infield. Sandford was drafted in the 47th round in June by the Kansas City Royals and was named the Royals’ fastest minor league baseball player by Baseball Ameri-ca. Park also lost a catcher, Bryan Cog-gins, from last year, but the Pirates’ most key losses will come from the pitching rota-tion, where three key seniors from the rota-tion departed at the end of the 2010 sea-son. The Pirates will be without All-AMC pitcher Matt Lackner, who tossed Park’s third no-hitter in school history last season, as well as Michael Barbosa and Trevor Pearson, who were both invited to profes-sional camps at the end of last season. “We’ll count on Derek McGowan a lot early on, and Gabe Perez will have to re-turn to form for us to be as good as we can be in the pitching rotation. It’s not our deep-est bullpen that we’ve had, but we think it’s a very competitive group that will give us solid innings,” Lundy said. “Our pitching re-ally needs to find its identity early on. When you lose guys like Lackner and Barbosa, as well as Pearson, you know you’ll have big shoes to fill. We do have a couple of good, veteran pitchers that will help bring along the young guys and new guys with experience.” McGowan (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South HS) will be the front-line starter, ini-tially, for the Pirates, after going 4-4 with a 2.25 ERA and 31 strikeouts. McGowan saved his best for last in 2010, firing a com-

plete game at McKendree University, beat-ing the Bearcats 2-1 when facing elimina-tion in the American Midwest Conference tournament in Hannibal, Mo. Perez (Chicago, Ill./Roberto Clemente HS) will enter his fifth season with the Pi-rates after earning a medical hardship ear-lier in his career. Perez has pitched in 26 games with 33 career strikeouts and a 2-2 record, primarily out of the bull-pen. Eight new pitchers will also join the Pirates’ staff in 2011, with a fight for rotation-time ex-pected early on in the season. That group includes Derek Gordon (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast HS), who is the younger brother of former Park infielder Brett Gor-don and Kansas City Royals’ first-round pick Alex Gordon. After Park’s season-opening road trip, the Pirates will play six more home non-conference series, as well as a four-game round-robin event at College of the Ozarks where the Pirates will play the Bobcats, as well as Iowa Wesleyan, Minot State and Mount Mercy. Park also plays away noncon-ference series at Baker and Peru State, in addition to its four Ameri-can Midwest Conference road se-ries and two home AMC sets. “We have a lot of good non-conference opponents coming to our field, and the round-robin at (College of the) Ozarks is loaded with quality baseball programs,” Lundy said. “The nonconference

will get us ready for conference play, and the AMC is going to be tough this year. We’re looking at four conference series on the road, with one of our two home series coming against (Missouri) Bap-tist, and they’re as good as anyone we’ll see this year.”

Gabe Perez (above) will join Derek McGowan as Park’s veteran pitchers in a young rotation. Perez is 2-2 all-time in four-seasons, and should return to form on the mound for the 2011 season. Mike Elliott (below) figures to help Park’s depth at first base as well as provid-ing power at designated hitter after hitting five home runs with six doubles as a junior in 2010.

CARY LUNDYCary Lundy enters his ninth season as the head baseball

coach at Park University as the school’s winningest head baseball coach and the only skipper to total 200 or more

wins in his career. Lundy is 229-159-1 in eight previous seasons at the helm of the Pirate baseball program, including a school-record 34 wins in 2009, surpassing a pair of 30-win seasons for Park also under Lundy’s guidance in 2003 and 2006. Lundy’s 2010 Park baseball team won 28 games and went to the semifinals of the American Midwest Conference tournament, breaking several team records throughout the season. Darian Sandford became the school’s career-record holder in both single-season and career stolen bases, swiping 56 bags in 2010 to total 99in his career. Sandford became the second play-er from Park’s program to be drafted, being selected in the 47th round by the Kansas City Royals in June. Park also had its third no-hitter in school history and the first under Lundy during 2010, when Matt Lackner no-hit the University of Saint Mary on April 11. Lundy also picked up his 225th career win in 2010. In 2009, Park opened the season with a school-record 12-0 start under Lundy in 2009, and during the season, his team pro-duced a 16-4 record at home while putting together a 15-5 mark in the program’s final season in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. The 2009 Pirates appeared in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll and at season’s end, the Pirates had a shot at conference su-premacy, but Park fell to Bellevue in the MCAC championship game, 10-4. Lundy’s Pirates fell just short of postseason competition in 2009

as the last team out of the 2009 Avista-NAIA World Series Open-ing Round. In all, 2009 produced five First-Team All-MCAC per-formers, one Rawlings/MCAC Gold Glove Honoree, two Daktron-ics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, seven Honorable Mention All-MCAC selections and the league’s pitcher of the year, Josh Hake. During the conference tournament, Lundy also picked up his 200th career win, beating York 5-4 on May 5. He then picked up No. 201 that same day, defeating Peru State, 17-4. In 2008, Lundy managed the team to 28 wins, and the team was one win away from advancing to an NAIA Super Regional, falling to Bellevue University in the NAIA Region IV title game. Park also played for a shot at the MCAC tournament title in Omaha, Neb., and at the conclusion of the 2008 season, Park had its first player drafted during the Lundy Era when Hake was taken in the 50th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2006, he guided the Pirates to the Region IV Tournament championship game, while in 2007, his Pirates qualified for the tournament, amassing 28 wins and finishing the season seven games above .500. Before taking over the program in 2003, he served for three seasons as an assistant coach at Park, starting when the program was reinstated in 2000. During the summer months, Lundy coaches UMB Bank in Kan-sas City’s prestigious Ban Johnson League, leading his squads to seven league championships. In addition, he has also served as a recommending scout for the Cincinnati Reds organization. A 1982 graduate of Park and native of Kansas City, Mo., Lundy played baseball, basketball and ran cross country as a Pirate. He has two children, J.D. and Kiely.

• Park began the year with wins in eight of its first 10 games, including a renewed rivalry with Benedictine College, a doubleheader sweep for the Pirates on March 15. Seniors Trevor Pearson and Michael Barbosa picked up complete-game wins, as the Pirates run-ruled the Ravens in game one on Scott Tatro’s pinch-hit homer, followed by Barbosa’s 8-2 win in game two.

• The conference slate got off to a rocky start, as the Pirates dropped 3-of-4 to Harris-Stowe State University, but Park bounced back in a rain-interrupted series with Wil-liam Woods University, beating the Owls 11-10 in the opener and 17-9 in game two. Ryan Rush had 12 RBIs in the doubleheader, hitting two home runs. Later in the year, William Woods returned to Comfort Field and took a pair of hard-fought victories, 3-2 and 5-2, to split the season series.

• Park traveled to Williams Baptist for four games to begin April and despite splitting both doubleheaders, Park would eventually end up with a four-game sweep of WBC after the Eagles were forced to forfeit their wins due to eligibility.

• The Pirates’ long break from conference play began after the series in Arkansas with a run-rule victory over Central Christian College. Derek McGowan beat the Ti-gers with a complete game, and after that win, the Pirates went on the road to play their only NCAA opponent of the season, falling 14-10 at Missouri Southern State University.

• Matt Lackner helped the Pirates bounce back the next day, tossing the school’s third no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the University of Saint Mary on April 11. Park swept the doubleheader from the Spires, getting a 7-1 win by James Parsons in game two. Park closed out the non-conference stretch with a heartbreaking extra-innings loss at Wil-liam Jewell College, 6-5, in 10 innings.

• Conference play resumed with four games at Missouri Baptist University, and for the first time in 2010, the Pirates were swept in a four-game set, getting shut out by Missouri Baptist twice in addition to a pair of one-run losses. Park would again bounce back from a loss in the Show-Me State, defeating Ottawa University 10-0 in game one of a nonconference double-header before beating the Braves in extra innings in game two, 5-4.

* Park opened a four-game conference series with McKendree that was bumped back a day April 25-26, digging a hole by dropping the first two games of the series to the Bearcats, 4-3 and 8-4. Lackner and Barbosa brought the Pirates back on day two, beating McKendree 7-3 and 4-1, setting the Pirates up for a run at the confer-ence tournament in the final stretch of the season. Park qualified for the AMC post-season by sweeping Hannibal-LaGrange.

• Park’s AMC tournament run began with a 12-6 loss to McKendree in the tourna-ment’s opening game, but the next day, the Pirates avoided elimination by defeating

Harris-Stowe, 9-5. Park then eliminated McKendree in a pitchers’ duel later that night, beating the Bearcats 2-1 in a game that was interrupted for nearly an hour by the lights going out Clemens Field in Hannibal, Mo. Park was eliminated a

couple days later, falling to William Woods, 5-2.

• The Pirates landed 12 all-conference honors by the end of the AMC tournament, including AMC Freshman of the Year Jimmy Smelcer and a first-team all-conference selection for Lackner. Rush was named to the

All-AMC Defensive Team at first base along with second baseman Darian Sandford, who broke the school’s record for stolen bases and finished

his career with 99 steals in a Park uniform. The Pirates also had seven academic all-conference honorees.

• Park’s baseball season conlcuded with news on the professional front, as Sandford was selected in the 47th round by the Kansas

City Royals, and Barbosa and Pearson were invited to spring training by the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. Sandford stole

30 bases in 38 games for the AZL Royals in the Arizona Rookie League.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering students the features

of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athlet-ics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Mis-souri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportu-nities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is lo-cally referred to as “north of the river.” Con-tained wholly within Missouri, it encom-passes portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kan-

sas City and Gladstone. Kansas City is situated at the conflu-ence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its bar-becue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kan-sas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kan-sas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Ex-plorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experi-ence, which includes the College Basket-ball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buf-falo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament. In 2010, Park University

made its second appearance in four sea-sons and its fourth overall appearances in the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, beat-ing Georgetown (Ky.) College in the first round, 83-75, before falling to Biola (Calif.) University in the second round. Addition-ally, the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its his-toric shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

BEST VALUE, NATIONWIDE Park University has been named as the top ranked value among private colleg-es and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. Park was ranked No. 1 in the category “Top 10 Best Value Private Colleges and Universities.” According to Parents & Colleges, insti-

tutions included on this list offer a diversity of degrees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for this incom-ing class. Park was cited as offering “both proximity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town. The 2,000-strong undergraduate stu-dent body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institutions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”

Claude English is in his 15th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving in the role since Janu-ary of 1996.

Prior to 2010-11, English was honored for his service as an athletics administrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. The Foun-dation supports the John McLendon Memorial Minority Post-graduate Scholarship Awards and is presented to senior-level minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame in-duction class by Percy Bates, Bernie Bickerstaff, Howard Gen-try, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don Newcombe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also hon-ored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, Ernie Davis, Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and Tyrone Willingham. In the spring, English will be inducted into the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame, in his home town of Columbus, Ga. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 sea-sons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball program, English also assumed the duties of Director of Athletics, a position he will continue into his 15th year in the 2010-11 academic year. During his tenure as Park’s Director of Athletics, English has guided the addition of two spring sports – baseball and women’s golf – in addition to facility upgrades throughout the department of athletics. Park’s facility upgrades under English’s watch began with the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, followed by the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Cen-ter, constructed in 2000 to become the home of Park University’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its men’s and women’s volleyball programs. Breckon Sports Center houses ad-ministrative offices and two domes – one for competition and one for practice. Recent upgrades to Park’s softball and baseball facilities have

also come under English’s watch, including new dugouts at the Park University Softball Com-plex, as well as new bleachers and game-scoring facilities at Comfort Field, the home of Park University baseball. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win

total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma

mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlan-tic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by

the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsman-ship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford

Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 47 conference championships, and in each of his 14 previous sea-sons as athletics director, at least one Park program has advanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 77 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, and 161 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
