CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in canine diabetes mellitus and colitis is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients whilemeeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber help to delay the absorption ofglucose from the intestinal tract and minimize postprandial fluctuation of glucose in dogs with diabetes mellitus. Solublefiber in the diet may also prolong gastrointestinal transit time, allow greater water absorption, and promote the production oshort chain fatty acids which nourish the intestinal mucosa.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets DCO Dual Fiber Control canine formula provides complete and balanced nutrition formaintenance of the adult dog and has been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:

High level of complex carbohydrates Source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids Targeted urine pH-acid (6.0-6.2) Moderate total dietary fat and calories Increased fiber including soluble fiber

MEDICAL INDICATIONS:Diets with these nutritional modifications have been recommended for dogs with some forms of the following conditions:

Diabetes mellitus Fiber responsive colitis Constipation Large bowel diarrhea

    MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS: None

FEEDING AND ADMINISTRATION:The following feeding program is recommended as a guideline only, with discretionary clinical adjustments for properweight maintenance.

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in dental disease is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients that can be fed every dayfor maintenance while meeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Nutritional management of dogs that are proneto the formation of tartar centers on feeding a kibble that significantly decreases the accumulation of tartar. This can beaccomplished by designing a kibble that is both large enough to promote increased chewing time and that has a specialtexture to allow the tooth to penetrate deep into the kibble before it breaks. Greater tooth penetration extends contact time

with the kibble for an excellent cleaning effect.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets DH Dental Health Canine Formula and DH Dental Health Small Bites CanineFormula have been formulated to provide complete and balanced nutrition for adult and senior dogs, while providing the following characteristics:

Optimal kibble size Moderate calories Patented kibble texture Exceptional palatability Added antioxidants A and E Perfect nutrition for everyday feeding of adult and senior dogs Natural source of glucosamine

MEDICAL INDICATIONS:Diets with these nutritional modifications have been recommended for adult and senior dogs withthe following conditions:

Adult and senior dogs to help reduce the accumulation of plaque and tartar Adult and senior dogs for everyday maintenance

    MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS: None

FEEDING AND ADMINISTRATION:The following feeding program is recommended as a guideline only, with discretionary clinical adjustments for properweight maintenance.

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in canine atopy, dermatitis and other inflammatory skin conditions is to provide a properbalance of total nutrients while meeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Nutritional management of dermatitisinvolves providing nutrients that can support healthy skin and help to reduce the production of inflammatory mediators.Essential fatty acids, key vitamins and amino acids, and trace minerals such as zinc, are critical to healthy skin. Long chainomega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the inflammation and clinical signs associated with atopy and allergic

dermatitis, so may be beneficial in these and other inflammatory skin conditions. A diet with novel protein ingredients mayalso help in the management of dogs with food allergies.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets DRM Dermatologic Management canine formula provides complete and balanced nutrition forgrowth of puppies and maintenance of the adult dog and has been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:

High omega-3 fatty acid content Added zinc Appropriate levels of omega-6 fatty acids Limited number of novel protein ingredients Increased antioxidant vitamins A, E and beta-carotene

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in canine gastrointestinal conditions is to provide a proper balance of total nutrientswhile meeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Dietary fats from long chain triglycerides (LCT) can be one of themost complex nutrients to digest, and fermentation of undigested fats can contribute to diarrhea. Medium chain triglyc-erides (MCT) provide a readily digested and utilized energy source. Feeding a properly formulated diet designed to be highlydigestible yet restricted in long chain triglycerides may be beneficial in the management of certain gastrointestinal condition

while meeting the nutritional needs of the animal.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric brand Canine Formulas provide complete and balanced nutrition for growth ofpuppies and maintenance of the adult dog and have been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:

High digestibility Low fiber Source of MCTs (22-34% of fat) Increased antioxidant Vitamins E and C (dry only) Moderate fat Added Zinc Source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids Enhanced with Colostrum (dry formula)

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in canine food allergy is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients while meeting thespecial dietary needs of the patient. Most common food allergens are proteins with a molecular weight of 18,000 to 36,000daltons. Protein modification is a process which alters the physical characteristics of protein molecules, reducing the antige-nicity and rendering them less able to elicit an immune response. By reducing the molecular weight of the protein moleculebelow 18,000 daltons, this process can result in a protein that is truly hypoallergenic.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets HA Hypoallergenic canine formula provides complete and balanced nutrition for the growth ofpuppies and maintenance of the adult dog and has been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:

Hydrolyzed protein source with an average molecular weight below 12,200 daltons Single protein source Vegetarian diet Source of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs)-23% of fat Low allergen carbohydrate source High digestibility

MEDICAL INDICATIONS:Diets with these nutritional modifications have been recommended for dogs with the following conditions:

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in canine arthritis is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients while meeting the special dietarneeds of the patient. Nutritional management of dogs with arthritis centers on reducing excess body weight and providing nutrientwith anti-inflammatory characteristics. Long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA),nutritionally compete with arachidonic acid as a substrate for cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing the amount of pro-inflam-matory mediators produced. Dietary antioxidants can help address the oxidative stress that often accompanies inflammation.

Providing a diet containing a natural source of glucosamine may also be beneficial for dogs with arthritis.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets JM Joint Mobility canine formula has been formulated to provide complete and balanced nutritionfor the growth of puppies and maintenance of adult and senior dogs, while providing the following characteristics:

High EPA and omega-3 fatty acid content High protein:calorie ratio Appropriate levels of omega-6 fatty acids Natural source of glucosamine Moderate fat content Excellent palatability High levels of antioxidant vitamin E and vitamin C (dry only)

MEDICAL INDICATIONS:Diets with these nutritional modifications have been recommended for dogs with the following conditions:

Adult and senior dogs with osteoarthritis Rheumatoid arthritis

Healthy puppies and adult dogs predisposed to joint disorders Other inflammatory joint conditions Conditions benefitting from moderate sodium restrictio

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in canine kidney conditions is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients while meetingthe special dietary needs of the patient. Low phosphorus intake helps to protect against hyperphosphatemia and theassociated renal damage. Restricted but high quality protein in the diet minimizes the intake of nonessential amino acids. Thihelps decrease the production of nitrogenous waste products. Reduced levels of sodium help compensate for the diseasedkidneys inability to regulate this important mineral. Increased omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce glomerular hypertension

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets NF Kidney Function brand canine formulas provide complete and balanced nutrition for adultmaintenance and have been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:

Low phosphorus Reduced sodium Reduced protein Target urine pH-alkaline (6.7-7.5) Added potassium Source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids

MEDICAL INDICATIONS:Diets with these nutritional modifications have been recommended for dogs with some forms of the following conditions:

Renal failure Conditions benefitting from moderate sodium restriction Hepatic disease associated with encephalopathy

NF Kidney Function also features many of the characteristics that have been recommended for dogs with a history of thefollowing condition: Calcium Oxalate Urolithiasis See page 42-43 of the full product guide for stone

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in canine obesity is to reduce calorie intake sufficiently to induce weight loss, while providina proper balance of total nutrients. A low fat diet can be helpful in controlling calorie intake. Dietary crude fiber helpsreduce the amount of available calories and contributes to satiety. Increased dietary protein increases metabolic activity andmay promote satiety. In addition, an increased protein:calorie ratio promotes loss of body fat while helping to minimize theloss of lean body mass during weight loss. Obese animals experience an increase in oxidative stress. Isoflavones have been

shown to reduce oxidative stress in overweight dogs. Isoflavones also aid in weight maintenance by helping to reduce weightrebound and the associated accumulation of fat. Feeding a diet that is low in calories, high in protein and fiber, and containsisoflavones, may be beneficial in the management of obesity while meeting the nutritional needs of the animal.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management canine formulas provide balanced nutrition for safe and effectiveweight loss and weight maintenance and have been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:

Low fat High protein:calorie ratio Low calorie Contains a source of isoflavones (dry) High fiber

MEDICAL INDICATIONS:Diets with these nutritional modifications have been recommended for dogs with some forms of the following conditions:

Obesity Diabetes mellitus in overweight dogs Hyperlipidemia in overweight dogs Constipation Neutered/spayed dogs Fiber responsive colitis

MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS: Conditions associated with catabolic states

FEEDING AND ADMINISTRATION:The following feeding program is recommended as a guideline only, with discretionary clinical adjustments for obesitymanagement. The suggested daily food intake for weight loss is based on the dogs current weight, average caloricrequirements and a desired weight loss of 2% of body weight per week. Daily food intake should be adjusted every 4 weeks:

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in dental disease is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients that can be fed everyday for maintenance while meeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Nutritional management of cats that are proneto the formation of tartar centers on feeding a kibble that significantly decreases the accumulation of tartar. This can beaccomplished by designing a kibble that is both large enough to promote increased chewing time and that has a specialtexture to allow the tooth to penetrate deep into the kibble before it breaks. Greater tooth penetration extends contact time

with the kibble for an excellent cleaning effect.

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in feline diabetes mellitus is to provide a proper balance of nutrients while meeting thespecial dietary needs of the patient. Cats are unique in their requirement to metabolize high concentrations of dietaryprotein. A high percentage of protein is used for gluconeogenesis. The increased concentration of high quality protein in thisdiet provides the cats essential amino acid requirements and a substrate for glucose production. With glucose productionfrom dietary amino acids, the carbohydrate content of the diet may be dramatically reduced as with this formulation. Glucos

derived from hepatic gluconeogenesis is delivered to the bloodstream at a slower rate compared to the release of glucosefrom digestion of dietary carbohydrate. The result is a more consistent, steady release of glucose and the potential forreduced insulin requirements.

DIET CHARACTERISTICS:Purina Veterinary Diets DM Dietetic Management Feline Formula provides complete and balanced nutrition for the adult caand has been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:

High protein Low carbohydrate Source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids High level of antioxidants

MEDICAL INDICATIONS:Diets with these nutritional modifications are recommended for cats with the following:

Diabetes mellitus Critical Care Management of cats and dogs Persistent hyperglycemia See page 44 for information on Glucotest Enteritis, diarrhea Hipatic Lipidosis

MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS: Renal failure Hepatic encephalopathy

FEEDING AND ADMINISTRATION:The following feeding program is recommended as a guideline only, with discretionary clinical adjustments for properweight maintenance.

DIETARY TRANSITION SCHEDULECAUTIONInsulin requirements may be dramatically reduced with theuse of this diet. It is critical that the transition from thecats current diet to DM Dietetic Managementis slow andthat the blood glucose is carefully monitored throughoutthe transition. In newly diagnosed cases, the transition maybe quicker.

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in feline kidney conditions is to provide an appropriate balance of total nutrients whilemeeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Low phosphorus intake helps to protect against hyperphosphatemia and theassociated renal damage. Restricted but high quality protein in the diet minimizes the intake of nonessential amino acids. Thihelps decrease the production of nitrogenous waste products. Reduced levels of sodium helps compensate for the diseasedkidneys inability to regulate this important mineral. Increased omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce glomerular hypertension

CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS:The role of dietary management in feline obesity is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients while meeting the specialdietary needs of the patient. Dietary fats contribute more than twice the available energy compared to carbohydrates andprotein. A low fat diet can be helpful in controlling calorie intake. Dietary crude fiber is poorly digested and helps reduce theamount of available calories and may contribute to satiety. Increased dietary protein may promote both increased metabolicactivity and satiety. In addition, an increased protein:calorie ratio promotes loss of body fat while helping to minimize the los

of lean body mass during weight loss. Feeding a properly formulated diet designed to be restricted in calories, and high infiber and protein, may be beneficial in the management of obesity while meeting the nutritional needs of the animal.
