Sesame seeds are mainly applied as an ingredient for bakery and confectionery food products. The Polish premium market is p rimarily focused on high quality while the opportunities on the fair trade and organic market remain limited. Poland – exclusive crusher of sesame seeds in the EU Poland’s apparent consumption of sesame seed is the third largest in the EU, amounting to 11 thousand tonnes in 2009. In the period 2005-2009, apparent consumption of the seed by Polish consumers remained stable. Poland’s oilseed crushing industry processed 5 thousand tonnes of sesame seeds in 2009, remaining at the same level compared to the year before. Poland is the only country with significant crushing activities in the EU. Polish production of sesame seeds is nonexistent. As a consequence, the country is entirely dependent on imports for its domestic market. Poland is the fourth largest importer of sesame seeds in the EU, accounting for 8.8% of total EU imports in volume. In 2009, the country imported 11 thousand tonnes or € 14 million of sesame seeds. Between 2005 and 2009, Polish sesame seed imports increased by 1.2% annually in volume and 11% annually in value. This development indicates a continuation of price increases of sesame seed imports for Poland. Poland is also the fourth largest importer of sesame seeds from DCs, accounting for 9.6% of total EU imports from DC s. During the review period, Polish imports from DCs increased by 2.8% annually in volume and 13% annually in value. In 2009, direct sesame seed imports from DCs accounted for a share of 89% in total imports by Poland, which was slightly higher in comparison to the EU average of 82%. In 2009, DC supplies of sesame seeds to Poland were dominated by India with a share in imports of 52%. Other DC suppliers were Paraguay (11%), Pakistan (9.2%) and Nigeria (4.8%). During the review period, high annual growth rates came from Paraguay (83%) and Ethiopia (8.9%). New DC supplies to Poland in 2009 were sourced in Pakistan and Burkina Faso. Understanding the Polish market  Poland: leading market in Eastern Europe Poland does not produce sesame seeds. As a result, the country is entirely dependent on imports. Imports of sesame seeds are mostly directed from DCs of which India is responsible for nearly three-quarters of Polish imports. Re-exports of sesame seeds from the Netherlands and Germany also have a substantial share in Polish imports. Only EU country which has a crush on sesame seed  According to Fediol (2011), Poland is the only EU countr y which crushes a notable volume of sesame seeds, although total crushed volume still remains small compared to other oilseeds (for example sunflower seeds). Although the crushing of oilseeds is dominated by two major foreign-owned (ADM and Bunge) plants, there are several smaller crushing plants present in the country.

Polish cuisine: east meets west Eastern Europe meets Western Europe in the Polish cuisine. Sesame seed is often used in West-European food as an ingredient for bakery products. On the other side, the East-European cuisine in particular makes use of sesame seeds for confectionery products, suchas sesame sweets (halva) or sesame bars (pasteli). Additionally, snack products together with the health trend have been picking up over the last few years, indicating opportunitiesfor healthy snacks of which sesame seeds can be an ingredient. Dehulled sesame seeds aremostly used for the production of confectionery products, while sesame seeds for bakery products are hulled as well as dehulled.

Market Entry Oilseeds, including sesame seeds, mainly enter the Polish market through the ports of Gdynia and Gdansk. The Polish conventional market for sesame seeds is dominated by Indian imports, which are renowned for meeting price and quality requirements (e.g.better cleaning and hulling facilities) in combination with favourable trading terms. As aresult, the conventional market is only a good point of entry if a DC exporter is able to meetsimilar price and quality requirements.

Premium markets (e.g. high-quality, fair trade and organic) can be an alternative entry point for small and medium-sized DC exporters. Within this segment, the Polish foodindustry mainly focuses on high quality products. The markets for fair trade and organicfoodstuffs remain small-sized compared to other EU markets but have been growing moderately in recent years.
