    RAY VANDER MAYHEAD COACH

    SEASONMONTCLAIR STATE 75

Now in his 15th season at the university and just 14 victories shy of 400 for his illustrious career, Ray Vander May has taken the Seton Hall softball program to unprecedented heights both on and off the field.

It might be easy to take for granted what is now in place at Seton Hall a state-of-the-art home field, proven postseason riches, academic honors ad infinitum but it all has come to pass thanks to the hard work, practice and boundless enthusiasm that Coach V instills in his staff and players. Rebuilding and remaking a well-below-average Seton Hall softball program was no easy task when Vander May took the job in 1997.

In 2009, Vander May took the softball program to the BIG EAST Championship for the second time in three years. His Pirates went toe-to-toe with top-seeded DePaul in the quarterfinals, but fell narrowly 1-0. Seton Hall enjoyed its finest season in three years after going 24-31-1 and 10-14 in the conference, and sent three players to the All-BIG EAST Third Team.

Vander Mays career record only begins to tell the story. From 1999-2005, Seton Hall won two BIG EAST Championships, finished second twice and made it to the NCAA Tournament three times. In that span he compiled 239 wins and just 107 losses, an average record of 34-15.

The 2005 season was a remarkable one for Vander May, as the Pirates won the BIG EAST Championship for the second year in a row. His teams had always scrapped and clawed their way to victory, but this squad was on another plane altogether. Its three league tournament victories were all nail-biters in the truest sense, and in all three the Pirates came out on top. It is the mark of this program and its coach never stop believing in the dream. The team went to the NCAA Regional as the BIG EASTs representatives for the second straight year and fell to eventual national champion Michigan and in extra innings to North Carolina. Along the way, Vander Mays Pirates picked up numerous awards, including two First Team Academic All-Americans, a Third Team

All-American, the BIG EAST Player of the Year and five All-Region honorees. Continuing the academic success his squads are known for, 15 Pirates were named to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team, three were named to the Academic All-District First Team and Megan Meyer was crowned the Academic All-American of the Year for her sport. For the second straight year, Vander May and his assistants, Jay Nelson and Bob Guerriero, were the NFCA Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

In 2004, Seton Hall enjoyed a banner year not seen in the programs history. The Pirates won the BIG EAST Championship and earned the leagues automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The team won a school-record 46 games and was a No. 4 seed in the NCAAs, going 2-2 at the Waco Regional at Baylor University. Five Pirates earned all-league honors, three were named to the all-region team, and pitcher Megan Meyer was a Third Team All-American and First Team Academic All-American. Vander May and

his assistants Jay Nelson and Bob Guerriero were named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Vander May was honored by the New Jersey Sportswriters Association with their College Softball Coach of the Year award.

His 2003 squad was one of the most successful in the schools history up to that point, compiling an impressive 37-14 record and 13-7 mark in the BIG EAST. The Pirates finished in a tie for third in the league. The 2002 season was significant for Vander May, as his club recorded 29 wins for the second straight year. Laura Taylors record-setting freshman season (she led the nation in home runs per game and set the single-season school record) proved that Vander May had a sharp eye on the recruiting trail.

Vander May led the 2001 team to a 29-16 record which included the runner-up trophy at the BIG EAST

Championship and a trip to Norman, Oklahoma, for NCAA Regional play. The 2000 team was 25-18-1.

Vander May was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year in 1999 after guiding the Pirates to a 39-8 overall record and a 12-4 BIG EAST mark. The Pirates finished second in the conference, just one year removed from going 0-15 in the league. The 39 wins were not only the most by a Seton Hall softball team but also by any womens athletic team in school history at that point.

The Pirates finished an injury-plagued 1998 season with an 18-28-1 record. In 1997, Vander Mays first season with the Pirates, he led the team to a 22-23 mark, at the time tying the school record for wins.

Vander May came to Seton Hall with impressive credentials as an established coach in both high school softball and the Amatuer Softball Association. Upon his hiring at Seton Hall he left as the winningest high school softball coach in New Jersey scholastic history, having compiled a 379-130-1 record over 21

years at Cedar Grove High School. He led the team to numerous championships, including the State Sectional title and the teams fourth North Jersey State Championship in 1996.

In 1979, Vander May earned New Jersey Coach of the Year by the Star-Ledger, as his Cedar Grove squad was the top ranked team in the state. He guided Cedar Grove to a state record 48-game winning streak from 1979-1980, a mark which lasted until 1991.

Just last year, a Cedar Groves new softball field was named after Vander May for his years of service to the school.

October of 1997 marked an important moment in Vander Mays career, as he received one of the ASAs highest honors when he was inducted into the Amatuer Softball Associations Hall of Fame. Vander May was one of five honorees from the Newark-Metropolitan area. His name will be permanently enshrined in the Softball Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Vander May is a 1975 graduate of Montclair State University and has taught elementary physical education in the Cedar Grove School System for over 25 years. He currently resides in West Caldwell, N.J., with his wife Patti and their son Ryan.

SEASON PREVIEWWith five seniors and nine positional starters all back from a year ago, the Seton Hall softball team will look to turn the page after a disappointing finish to the 2010 season. The Pirates sat in fourth place in the BIG EAST standings with just five games remaining, but dipped to the ninth spot after a late-season slide and narrowly missed the cut for the BIG EAST Championship.

Head coach Ray Vander May, entering his 15th season at the Hall, has made it his mission to turn that misfortune into a positive and bring the Pirates back into contention for their third BIG EAST title during his tenure.

We were all disappointed with the way we finished last year, said Vander May. We played very competitively, that was not the issue. We just played other teams that raised their level and got the big hit when they needed it, and we didnt. They were all very hurt by how last year ended, but are working harder than Ive ever seen them work, and are definitely ready to move forward.

Vander May is quick to point out that senior captains Michelle Reed and Brittany Schillizzi have spearheaded Seton Halls rededication to improving on and off the field. Both are four year starters and have played key roles in the Pirates success.

Reed has served as the teams leadoff hitter shifted from rightfield to center last year. She is 16 stolen bases shy of breaking Seton Halls career record and is on the verge of breaking into the top-10 of several other offensive categories.

Michelle has been so consistent for us, Vander May stated. She is a career .318 hitter and has really performed the way weve expected her to when we brought her in. She is a great leader and she deserves that (stolen base) record. Big things happen when she gets on base and I expect her to be on the base paths a lot this year.

Schillizzi, who also moved positions from shortstop to second base in 2010, is already one of the top run producers in school history. She comes into the season with 71 career RBI, which is ninth on the all-time list. Her offensive numbers dipped a bit in her junior season, batting .244 with four homers and 15 RBI, but Schillizzi has been vital in the Pirates success the past three years. SHU is an astounding 23-7-1 when Schillizzi drives in a run since her breakout season of 2009.

I think part of Britts drop off in offensive numbers last year was because of the position change, Vander May said. Its a different position at second, and she worked really hard to get better defensively there.

  • 2011 SETON HALL SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2011 SETON HALL SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 11

    SEASON PREVIEW

She might have taken some of that into the batters box with her, but she has put it all past her now. I have no doubt that she will have the best year of her career this season.

Senior outfielders Nalin Bennett and Jamie Gates will also serve as team leaders and are slated to bat towards the top of the order to produce runs. Bennett is another speedster that hit .319 with 21 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. She comes into the year 10th on the career stolen base list with 27 swipes. Gates emerged as the starting rightfielder in the middle of 2010, and her 12 sacrifice bunts led the BIG EAST. She is also the teams number two catcher and is also a stolen base threat. Her ability to lay down bunts and slash (faking a bunt to draw the infield in and then taking a full shortened swing at a pitch) makes her very effective hitting second in the lineup to move Reed into scoring position.

Nalin has been one of our most consistent hitters since shes been here, stated Vander May. Her speed is her best weapon, but she can also hit for power. She didnt show it last year, but she did her first two years and we think shes got that back.

Jamie has worked really hard to get where she is, added Vander May. She brings a lot to the team. Shes

fast and versatile. Shes a good slasher and bunter and because of her speed, shes a threat to get on base and not just sacrifice people over. We can play her in the outfield and behind the plate, which she came up very big when (starting catcher Nicole Loewenstein) got hurt last year. She is really the perfect number two hitter for our lineup.

Loewenstein returns behind the plate for her third season after taking positive strides offensively. Her batting average rose to .276 last season while belting five homers with 22 RBI. Vander May also likes how Loewenstein has progressed defensively, calling games and controlling the pitching staff.

At first base, Kristen Kaelin is coming another solid season, batting .291 with five home runs and a team-high 27 RBI. She was named Second Team All-Region by the NFCA and is arguably one of the most dangerous hitters in the conference.

Kristen has been a clutch power-hitter for us, Vander May said. Shes a student of the game, has a great passion, and has great leadership qualities. I suspect youll see a lot of people intentionally walk her because she is a major threat.

Sophomore Brittany Hammer will remain at shortstop after an impressive rookie season. Hammer hit .299 with seven RBI and was 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts. Vander May likes her ability to hit to the opposite field and that she can beat you with a double or leg out an infield single.

Stepping in at third base is newcomer Meredith Henze. The Pirates had several players fill in there last season, and although Vander May was happy with the personnel he had there, third is Henzes natural position. She should add more pop to the Seton Hall lineup and was a teammate of Loewenstein when they played summer ball.

Meredith has a lot of confidence, said Vander May. She certainly doesnt play or act like a freshman. Defensively, Meredith showed she can play with anyone. She has tremendous power that she can hit for, but she needs to learn how to make adjustments with the pitching that shell see at this level.

Senior Stephanie Bontales along with juniors Laura Canulli, Jeanette Ragucci, and Christie Jensen provide the Pirates with a great deal of depth that can slide into various positions and will be important as pinch runners.

  • 2011 SETON HALL SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE12 2011 SETON HALL SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Bontales is primarily and outfielder, but can play several infield positions as well. She has shown the knack for making a big play during her career, including breaking up reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, Jody Valdivias, no-hitter at Notre Dame and a great sliding catch in leftfield in an upset of DePaul in 2009.

Canulli can also play both infield and outfield and was the teams third baseman last season. She improved both offensively and defensively as the season went along, and Vander May will not hesitate to use her as the designated player or in the field.

Ragucci will fill in at rightfield when Gates is catching and provides even more speed to the lineup. She is a lefty slapper and was outstanding in right, throwing out would-be baserunners at first base from the outfield.

In Jensen, the Pirates have another player to plug in the outfield and on the base paths. Vander May thought she could win a spot going into last year, but injuries plagued her sophomore season.

We have so many players we could use in our lineup that give us different looks, noted Vander May. With the designated player, I feel like we can mix and match and really give everyone an opportunity to play. By doing that it does three things; it will keep

everyone happy, it keeps players sharp so they can step up in key situations, it will keep our ladies fresh at the end of the season.

A trio of sophomores should also contend for playing time this season. Kirby Groves is an infielder who blasted three home runs, outfielder Cashel Gaffey drove in seven runs in limited action, and pitcher Brooke Tull, who proved she can swing the bat as well, hitting .238 with a homer and 10 RBI in 42 at bats.

The only place Seton Hall does not have experience is in the pitching circle. Sophomore Hannah Hill is slated to be the teams number one starter coming into the year. Hill made 15 appearances and five starts, but was hindered all season by a broken ring finger on her throwing hand suffered just before the start of last year. She had her breakthrough performance in a complete-game, one-hitter against Iona.

Hannah Hill has really stepped up big time, Vander May said. Right now, she is throwing and acting like a senior. She is the leader of our pitching staff for sure. She is hitting her spots and has much better command. Without a question, having a broken finger and not being able to grip the ball had a major affect. I think she proved to use that her confidence is sky-high now after she beat Fordhams All-American Jen Mineau during the fall.

    SEASON PREVIEW

  • 2011 SETON HALL SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2011 SETON HALL SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 13

SEASON PREVIEWFreshman Jen Metzger impressed Vander May during the fall season as well and is the top contender to be the second starter. The aforementioned Tull was also injured before the start of the 2010 season and was used sparingly in the circle, but has continued to develop and will be relied on to eat some innings as well.

Jen Metzger is the one who keeps everyone very competitive during practice, said Vander May. She hits her spots really well. When you put her under pressure, she gets even better. She was undefeated in the fall and is going to be great for us. Shes a rookie, but I think shell help us out a lot.

Brooke showed us some good things in the fall as well, continued Vander May. Her pitches are coming along. Brooke will probably be used out of the bullpen for the most part, but if she keeps progressing shell get more opportunities.

Not only does Seton Hall hope to regain its form from the 2004 and 2005 BIG EAST Championship years, but they look to help Vander May reach a milestone. Coming into the season, the coach is just 14 victories shy of 400 for his illustrious career. When asked about what 400 wins would mean to him, Vander May was quick to deflect the attention away from himself.

To me, personally, its really a team effort, stated Vander May. You have so many individuals that help you along the way. You have to have good assistants, players, and people around you. When any coach reaches a milestone, they never do it by themselves. There are always great people behind the scenes that help you get there. Ive been fortunate to have a lot of great players that Ive had the privilege of coaching.

Seton Halls softball home Ivy Hill Park opened for the 2005 season, giving the Pirates one of the finest home facilities in the region. Featuring a clay infield, synthetic grass, new dugouts and bleachers, Ivy Hill Park is a state-of-the-art experience for SHUs student-athletes, the greater South Orange/Newark community, and Pirate softball fans.

Adjacent to the Seton Hall campus, the field could not be more convenient. There are lights for nighttime play and plenty of practice space in the surrounding park area. Ivy Hill Park was built as part of a larger Essex County parks improvement initiative. The result: a splendid home field for the two-time BIG EAST Champion Pirates!

  • Seton Hall is about caring and sharing to pass a torch to students that is burning brighter than the one passed to us!

    - Tony Lovisck, Ph.D.Chair, Finance and Legal Studies

    Stillman School of Businees

On our campus and within our classrooms we have built a home for the mind, the heart, and the spirit.

FOR THE MIND: We off er more than 60 majors and concentrations taught by 860 full-time faculty, in fi ve undergraduate schools with practical, real-world emphasis.

FOR THE HEART: We off er a compassionate, diverse and collaborative environment that focuses on academic and ethical development.

FOR THE SPIRIT: Our faith and spiritual commitments inspire faculty to educate student to become servant leaders in their personal and professional lives, in their community and in their global society.

In our valued-centered curricula, programs and extra-curricular activities, we focus on academics and devel-opment of the individual. Our graduates continue to prove themselves as leaders in their professions and communities. Seton Hall gives you all the resources you would fi nd in a large university. But with only 5,200 undergraduates and a 15:1student-faculty ratio, you get the personal attention of a small liberal arts college.

  • Our focus is ethical leadership. Increasingly, using a strong moral compass to direct your lifestyle and work ethic is an important component in forging a successful career. This is why we off er classes in ethics and, beyond that, education guided by Catholic ideals and universal values.

Seton Hall provides a values-based education. Service learning is an intrinsic element of this. Value-neutral learning is like a ship at sea with no rudder.

    - Krystal KramerInternational Relations

    Prescott, Arizona

We encourage ongoing, across-the-curriculum discussions on the ethics of business, medicine, teaching and other disciplines and urge you to use your personal morals and values in debating issues and making decisions. Underscoring our national prominence in emphasizing service learning and nurturing the spirit, the John Templeton Foundation has named Seton Hall as one of the countrys leaders in developing the character of its students.

Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New Yorks borough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media the list goes on and on.

The Halls campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. Hop the train to the next town west, Maplewood, for a slice of pizza, or two stops and you are in Milburn with great sushi restaurants or just a few more and you are in Summit where you can do shopping at clothing stores like Benetton or Roots, Inc. And dont forget the Jersey Shore or skiing in Northern New Jersey in the winter.

I love our proximity to New York. Our location just sweetened the deal for me.
