Are you looking for a summer adventure for your girl? Does she want to spend a week with

friends, both new and old? Is she ready for an outdoor adventure? Girl Scout camp awaits

her! She can learn something new; go on an adventure trip; or spend a week swimming,

singing, and exploring nature. Your camper is sure to have a great time with Girl Scouts –

North Carolina Coastal Pines this summer.

Each week at camp we will celebrate how our founder Juliette Gordon Low and other

great women—who believed they could make a difference and achieved the difference

they wanted to see—have inspired each of us to believe in ourselves.

When your girl goes to camp—whether in the outdoors or on a road trip—she will build

courage, confidence, and character. Camp is designed to empowHER every girl with the

chance to succeed, build friendships, challenge herself, and have fun.

our resident camps

camp grahamCamp Graham is located on scenic Kerr Lake in Vance County.The camp consists of 155 acres of lake frontage, open areas, andwoodlands. The four camping units (two tent units and two cabinunits) have shelters, picnic tables, and fire grills. The waterfrontproves to be most popular during resident camp, giving campers achance to swim, canoe, and sail. Other camp amenities includelake trails, volleyball courts, an archery range, the tie-dye studio,and lots of open space to play and explore. camp hardee Camp Hardee is located southeast of Washington, N.C., on thesouth side of the Pamlico River. The camp consists of 95 acreswith river frontage, woodlands, and open space. The four campingunits have electricity, air conditioning, picnic tables, and grills.Other facilities on site include the resident camp dining hall,swimming pool, volleyball court, infirmary, and archery range—andthe Pamlico River offering canoeing, kayaking, and sailing. Rollerand ice skating rinks, a state park, and other resource facilities mayalso be used for resident camp. camp mary atkinson Camp Mary Atkinson is located near Clayton, N.C., in JohnstonCounty. The camp consists of 262 acres of woodlands. The fourcamping units (two tent units and two cabin units) have shelters,picnic tables, and fire grills. Camp Mary Atkinson is home to thechallenge-by-choice Alpine Tower, a summer horse program, andthe Girl Scout Leadership Center. Other camp favorites include azero-entry swimming pool, pond for canoeing, nature trails, tenniscourts, archery range, and much more! camp pretty pondCamp Pretty Pond is a 135-acre campsite located in BrunswickCounty, approximately 18 miles southwest of Wilmington, N.C.This site has a continuous, paved path that runs throughout thecamp. One tent unit and two cabin units are available. Campersenjoy amenities such as a swimming pool, pond, volleyball court,archery range, crafts hut, and more! Girl Scout Leadership ExperienceCamp is full of fun activities—archery, swimming, climbing the Alpine Tower,eating in the dining hall, cooking out, and making friends. The Girl ScoutLeadership Experience is central to our summer resident camp program.Through activities and experiences, girls will gain skills to become leaders whoare inspired to make the world a better place. Activities may include working onGirl Scout Journeys, grade level awards, and patches. All campers will receive acamp patch.

Group and Troop Camp!Troops and groups, complete with leaders, spend time exploring the wilds ofCamp Graham or Camp Hardee while participating in swimming, sailing, orcanoeing, and enjoying other fun camp activities depending upon which campyour Girl Scouts decide to attend. Weeklong and mini-sessions are designed fora group of girls and adults to attend resident camp as a unit. Stay for a weeklongsession, arriving Sunday afternoon and leaving Friday afternoon. For a mini-session, spend three days at camp having a great time.

At Group and Troop Camp, girls camp in groups and attend with theirtroop/group leader or other adults. The resident camp provides a “core” staff,including camp director, lifeguards, health supervisor, arts and crafts director,and dining hall staff. Each group has the opportunity to plan some of their ownactivities and can also participate in some waterfront, sports, crafts, and all-camp sessions led by the camp staff. Meals are prepared for you in the dininghall. Training is provided for Group Camp leaders before you’re off to camp. Itreally is the best of all worlds—a camping experience away from home, campingwith your closest troop/group buddies, and meeting new girls from other areasat camp.

Explorers – Be bold and adventurous! Imagine a time when therewere no roads and no cities. Yesterday’s explorers changed all ofthat and developed new pathways. You too can explore thepossibilities at camp. Discover your interests through music, art,games, boating, and much more!

Mariners – Imagine setting sail and exploring the ocean blue!Ancient mariners navigated by the sun and stars, without modernnavigation aids. Come to camp and learn new water skills, as youenjoy the wonders of water and the exciting life of a mariner!

Pathfinders – Help your campmates find or make a path to themost fun at summer camp. You’ll explore and discover the wondersof camp while finding a new path. Are you ready for the challenge?

Performers – Singing, dancing, and acting are just a few types ofperformances to explore, but at camp this week all the world’s astage. No matter what you do, you’ll be a star! Get ready to strutyour stuff and give it your all!

Pioneers – What was it like before telephones, television, andcomputers? Relive the days of our ancestors by trying some “new”old things with your new friends. Will you persevere like thepioneers?

Survivors – Imagine yourself deserted with nothing but the fewthings you can carry with you. This week at camp, explore what ittakes to be a survivor—whether on an island, in the woods, or in theArctic North. Come ready to explore!

Trailblazers – Have you ever plotted a trip on a map, figuring outthe best routes to take and the places to stop along the way? Youcan blaze your own trail of fun at camp this week, experiencing yourfavorite camp activities and enjoying new ones!

Trendsetters – What’s popular today started with someone’s ideayesterday! Trendsetters are all around … in the news, at school, onthe Web, and, even back in history. This week you’ll be thetrendsetters of tomorrow.What trend will youinspire?

delightfuldaycamps!Looking for additional camp opportunities? Consider attending a Girl Scout Day Camp. Day camps (and sometwilight camps) typically serve girls ages 7–17 with either daylong or early evening programming. Teens have thespecial opportunity to serve as Program Aides at some camps. Girl Scout day camps are offered at variouslocations throughout the council and provide an entertaining and enlightening experience for you to explore, trynew things, and meet new friends. Q: Who can attend Girl Scout resident camp?A: Camp is open to all girls entering grades 2–12 regardless of race, religion, ability, national origin, or

socioeconomic factors. All programs are open to Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts. Some programs mayhave prerequisites, which must be met to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the camper.

Q: My camper is not a member of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines butwould like to attend camp. Can she attend, and are there additional fees?

A: Girl Scout camps are open to all girls. Girls who are not members of Girl Scouts of the USA by February 1, 2011, pay an additional fee of $75 per camp session (which is due with the initial deposit). Girls who are members of councils other than Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines pay an additionalfee of $60 per camp session (which is due with the initial deposit).

Q: Where will the campers sleep?A: Girls are grouped in units. Depending on their program choice, girls may sleep in cabins or platform tents.

Each unit has trained counselors housed in separate quarters within the living unit, but close enough tosupervise campers. Counselors sleep in the same cabin in select sessions at Camp Hardee. Thesesessions are noted in the description.

Q: Can my camper attend camp with a buddy/friend?A. Yes, we would love for girls to attend camp with a buddy. Space is available on the registration form for the

buddy’s name to be listed, but a camper may request only one buddy. Both girls need to be in the same agegroup, and both must register for the same session. Sorry, we cannot honor requests for more than onebuddy.

Q: What are camp staff like? Are they trained?A: Camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring. They are selected based on their maturity, program

experience, and genuine desire to work with girls. All counselors are at least 18 years old. Before campbegins, staff attend an intensive on-site training, which includes activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first aid and safety, emergency procedures, team building, program age level characteristics,dealing with homesickness, and much more.

Q: Are camp staff local?A: Most camp staff are from North Carolina. However, we work with Camp Counselors USA to recruit diverse

staff from many different countries around the world. These staff members share their culture with thecampers through camp activities.

Q: My potential camper has special needs.Can she come to camp?

A: Each year, many girls with special needs are able toparticipate in our camp program. Girls must be able tofunction in a 6:1 girl-to-adult ratio. Special needs mayinclude physical, medical, developmental, dietary,behavioral, or communicative. It is our hope to be able toserve all girls wishing to attend resident camp. Providing asafe and positive experience to all campers is of utmostimportance to us. The council reserves the right to makedecisions of participation based on the extent of the girl’sspecial needs and our ability to meet those needs in thecamp setting, as well as other factors as deemedappropriate. We are concerned about the health andsafety of all campers, and we want to ensure we haveappropriate professional and medical services to meettheir needs. Please contact the camp director at1.800.284.4475 to discuss the camp program and natureof your girl’s needs before registering for camp.

Q: Can my camper call home during the week?

A: No. We encourage independence and self-reliance.Campers are not permitted to make or receive phonecalls. The camp director will contact parents if thecamper has a medical problem, is excessively homesick,or has an emergency.

Please let your child know before camp that she will notbe able to call home and that you are comfortable withthis. It is important that you do not send your child tocamp with a cell phone, as there is little or no coverage—and, most importantly, it will send a conflicting messageto other campers. We are partners with you in your child’ssummer experience, and we hope that you will supportus in making camp happy and fun for everyone.

Q: Can we visit during a camp session?A: No. To help maintain program continuity and ensure the

safety of campers, visitors are allowed at camp duringopen house and arrival and departure hours only.

Q: What is a typical day at camp?A: The day’s schedule will vary based on the camp and

program but will be similar to the following:7:00 a.m. Wake Up8:00 a.m. Breakfast/Flag Ceremony/Kapers9:30 a.m. Morning Activities12:30 p.m. Lunch and Downtime2:30 p.m. Afternoon Activities/Unit Time6:00 p.m. Dinner/Flag Ceremony7:15 p.m. All Camp Activity9:30 p.m. Lights Out

Q: What happens if my camper has adifficult time adjusting to camp?

A: Camp staff will do everything possible to help girls adjustto camp life. However, resident camp staff reserve theright to send any girl home who consistently exhibitsinappropriate behavior or endangers herself or others.The girl’s parent/guardian is responsible for picking herup, and fees will not be refunded.

Q: What measures are taken to ensure mychild’s safety while at camp?

A: We are dedicated to providing safe and secure camps forour campers. Each camp follows the guidelines set by theAmerican Camp Association as well as those set by GirlScouts of the USA through Safety Activity Checkpoints.Staff are housed in close proximity to camper cabins andtents, and buildings and grounds are checked nightly. Allcamp staff and adults spending the night at camp mustsuccessfully complete a criminal background check.

Q: If our plans change, how do I cancel mychild’s session and get a refund?

A: If your plans change and your camper can no longerattend her camp session, please notify the council’scamp registrar as soon as possible. Once you register fora session, you have made a commitment to that sessionand are responsible for payment in full. No refunds areavailable unless you have a medical emergency with awritten doctor’s statement or the session has a waitlistand we can fill your camper’s space. In those cases, arefund minus the non-refundable deposit will beconsidered. Please see page 28 for our full refund and cancellation policy.

Q: When is the last day to register for camp?

A: Camp registrations will be accepted until two weeks priorto the session your camper wishes to attend. After April 29, registration must include payment in full. For lateregistrations, please note that your camper must have adoctor’s signature on her health history form in order toattend camp.

Troops and accompanying familymembers may attend the game, but only troops mayspend the night (girl members and appropriate adultleadership). Each ticket holder receives a patch and afun goodie. Camp Graham is located on beautiful Kerr Lake, which is the main hiveof activity for campers while at camp. All campers will get to enjoy thewaterfront, whether they are swimming, canoeing, kayaking, or sailing(based on swim ability levels). Every camper will have the opportunity toparticipate in the camp’s traditions and create a tie-dyed T-shirt, makesome other crafts, explore the wide-open spaces, and enjoy all thatcamp has to offer. Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, andAmbassadors can also take aim at the archery range. Campers will stay in either platform tents or cabins, based on session.

Kerribbean CruiseFor girls entering grades 9–12Do you love sailing? Are you looking for a new and challenging sailingexperience? In this mini session, spend a full day exploring Kerr Lake on Camp Graham’s Sunfish. All sailors must have previous sailingexperience.

Camp KaleidoscopeReturns to Camp Graham!For the past 32 years, Camp Kaleidoscopehas been a huge part of Camp Graham.Through Camp Kaleidoscope, chronically illchildren are given a chance to take a breakfrom hospitals and have fun in the outdoors.

The boys and girls who attend CampKaleidoscope have non-communicablechronic diseases such as cancer, asthma,kidney disease, or heart disease. Doctors,nurses, and other professionals from theDepartment of Pediatrics at Duke UniversityMedical Center spend the week with thecampers in the Kaleidoscope Program. Theyparticipate in all aspects of camp.

For most of these kids, going to CampGraham is their first camping experience—because they cannot go camping withoutdoctors, nurses, therapists, and specialequipment. Without the Kaleidoscopeprogram, many of the children would neverhave a chance to experience the fun ofsummer camp.

This year, girls and boys in the CampKaleidoscope program will be at CampGraham the weeks of July 3–8, July 10–15,and July 17–22.

Leave Your MarkFor girls entering grades 6–8Girl Scouts always leave a place better than they found it, andthe Earth is no exception! Have fun learning how to help ourenvironment. Enjoy the beauty of camp while kayaking on thePamilco River. Brainstorm some easy steps we can all take tostop global warming, and practice re-using and recycling todecrease the amount of trash going into landfills.

Don’tmiss your chance to make over your old room for a new look!

Dashing DivasFor girls entering grades 9–12Come experience the trendy nightlife of Camp Hardee. Stay upreally late one night for a midnight swim and a movie, and thensleep in the next morning. Spend your days lounging by thepool, cooking over a campfire, kayaking, and making a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt.

Camp Hardee’s campers stay in air-conditioned cabins while enjoying their fun camp sessions. All girls participate in arts & crafts andswimming in the pool. Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors will have the chance to try archery. The camp is situated onthe Pamlico River, and all campers get to canoe. Some sessions allow campers to kayak or sail, depending on the session description. Insome sessions counselors will sleep in cabins with the campers.

In this session, campers willcontinue to learn all about boating safety, rigging, thewind, how a sail works, tacking, jibbing, capsize recoveries,steering, anchoring, and more. Campers will need to beable to swim 100 yards and tread water for five minutes.

Camp Mary Atkinson is located near Clayton in Johnston County and is home to our challenge-by-choice Alpine Tower (for those whoare 10 years or older); the bouldering Grotto; a summer horse program; and the Girl Scout Leadership Center featuring an air-conditioned dining hall, stage, and technology center. Some campers will have the opportunity to perform on stage or discover moreby using the computer lab. Other camp favorites include a zero-entry swimming pool, pond for canoeing, nature activities, tenniscourts, crafts hut, and much more! Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors can also take aim at the archery range.Campers will participate in several all-camp activities during the week to connect with the whole camp community. Surf’s Up! Camp Pretty Pond: June 14–17For girls entering grades 7–12Calling all girls who have always wanted to learn to surf, catch a wave,or get in the barrel! This is your chance to experience the thrill of theboard beneath your feet, the wind in your hair, and the warmth ofthe summer sun on your face. Look cool and feel confident afterthree days of lessons kickin’ it surfer girl style, riding toes on thenose! Spend time with your buddies sitting around the campfireexchanging surf stories or tearing it up on the volleyball court. Girlsmust be able to swim, stay underwater for short periods of time,and lift a lightweight surfboard. Girls stay at Camp Pretty Pond andtravel to Kure Beach for the surf lessons.

Baltimore Bound! Camp Hardee: July 5–9 For girls entering grades 7–12Explore Baltimore, a vibrant city on the water where you will findsomething new around every corner. Visit the national aquariumand Camden Yards (home of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team),tour the famous Fort McHenry, and enjoy the wonderful innerharbor. Campers will travel by van to Maryland and will pitch tentswhile staying in a public campground.

Ropes, Rafts, and Roughing ItCamp Graham: July 17–22 For girls entering grades 8–12Have you ever gone down the river in a raft? You will get toexperience an overnight rafting trip in West Virginia. Pitch your tentat Camp Graham and stay for a night, then head to ACE AdventureResort to play in the water park on huge inflatable toys, go hiking,spend some time climbing, and much more. Campers will travel byvan to West Virginia and will pitch tents while staying in a publiccampground. Must be 12 years old at the start of the session.

Llama TrekCamp Graham: July 31–August 5For girls entering grades 8–12Take to the trails of the Pisgah National Forest with the help ofllamas carrying your group’s gear. You’ll get an introduction tobackpacking while learning to set up camp and get along in nature.As you make your way along wooded trails and gorgeous rivers,you’ll find yourself on a forest safari! Spend the night at camp beforeheading out, and return to camp in time for a campfire on Thursdaynight.

Summer VacationCamp Graham: August 7–9 For girls entering grades 6–12Stay overnight at Camp Graham before traveling by bus to Virginiato spend a day at Kings Dominion. Ride the roller coasters, take asplash in the water park, and enjoy a fun-filled day at an amusementpark. Come back to Graham and spend the rest of your timeswimming, playing games, and making crafts.

Camp CostsGirl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines understands the value of camp and continues to provide financial support to offer these important programs at affordable rates. Camp fees cover most direct costs—such asfood, program supplies, supplementary health and accidentinsurance, and camp counselor salaries. Indirect costs—such asplanning and administering the program, registration, and propertymaintenance—are fees supplemented by the council.

In addition, financial assistance in the form of “Camperships”enables all girls to enjoy the Girl Scout camp experience.Camperships are made possible thanks to our many generousdonors. If you would like to make summer resident camp possiblefor a girl, please mark your donation to the Campership Fund onthe registration form. All donations are tax deductible. Refund and Cancellation PolicyCamp FeesA significant amount of planning time and money are spent severalmonths prior to the start of camp. It is also difficult to fill open slotsas the summer approaches. Therefore, it is important to contactthe council’s camp registrar as soon as possible if you know thatyour camper is unable to attend camp.• If your camper has a medical emergency that prevents her from

attending camp, a refund request less the non-refundabledeposit will be considered if submitted with a written doctor’sstatement two weeks prior to the camp session.

• If your camper becomes unable to attend camp for otherreasons, the council may be able to refund your camper’ssession fees less the deposit if your camper’s slot is filled fromthe wait list.

• If the council cancels the camp session, all fees (including thedeposit) will be refunded. If your camper is on a wait list and notplaced in a session, the total fee (including the deposit) will berefunded.

Other FeesFees for Trading Post gift cards, camp care packages, T-shirts andphotos are fully refundable with a two-week notice prior to thecamp session.

Complete the Registration ProcessYou will receive a registration confirmation by e-mail or postcard (if an e-mail address is not provided with registration) soon afteryou register for camp. You will also receive a full CampConfirmation Packet by the second week of April (if you register by April 1). This packet contains important information that yourcamper must know about her session, as well as additionalpaperwork that must be completed and returned no later than May 18, 2011. Camp Confirmation Packets will be sent on anongoing basis for registrations received after April 1.

The council contracts with a third party administrator, CampDoc,which will send an e-mail requesting your camper healthinformation between March 23 and April 6, 2011. CampDocconsolidates and integrates camper health information into acentralized and secure location. In accordance with HIPPA policies,only council health staff and camp directors will have access tocamper medical information; the confidentiality of your child’shealth information will always be protected.

Please note that most camp forms are downloadable from thecouncil website (www.nccoastalpines.org).

CampershipsCamperships or financial assistance for resident camp, groupcamp, day camp, and special programs are available to currentlyregistered Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines memberswho are unable to pay the total cost of a camp experience. A girlmust be a registered member by February 1, 2011, to be consideredfor a campership.

Camperships are awarded based on need, active participation inthe Girl Scout program, and information provided on the FinancialAssistance for Summer Opportunities Form. The CampershipCommittee makes every effort to use available money fairly toassist as many girls as possible. The deadline for applying is April 6.Applications received after April 6, will be reviewed on an ongoingbasis if funding is available. All applications are handled in aconfidential manner. As these funds are limited, please submit your application for assistance as soon as possible immediatelyafter registering for camp.

To provide assistance to as many girls as possible, campershipswill be awarded for only one session of camp and do not cover the cost of Camp Xtras. The amount of assistance per girl will notexceed $175 for resident camp or $100 for group camp.

Prior to applying for financial assistance, campers must beregistered for a camp session and have paid a $75 non-refundabledeposit.
