EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As the purpose of study was to determine the production & productivity, Agricultural
Extension Services role, and sales & credit availability for Medicinal And Aromatic Plants in
Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.
The study was conducted using Descriptive research design. Six blocks from the district
Uttarkashi namely Mori, Naugaon, Purola, Bhatwadi, Dunda & Chinyalisaur and five blocks
from district Chamoli namely Joshimath, Dewal, Tharali, Gairsain & Dasoli were selected for
the purpose of study.
For the study purpose structured questionnaire was prepared which was close ended in nature.MAP species which are taken under cultivation i.e. Kuth, Kutki and Atees.
It was found that infrastructure was the main constraint in development process because of
that farmers are unable to sell their produce. Farmers are also lacking in knowledge of Atees
and Kutki cultivation because of poor extension activities regarding MAP cultivation in six
blocks of district Uttarkashi. No training programs were conducted for MAP cultivation in
past 2 years. Lack of staff in government agency to look after the MAP production as per the
size of district.
HRDI, Bhesaj Vikas Ikai (government agency), NGO and NABARD are the active agencies
which were taking part in promotion of MAP cultivation. There is no case of bank loan was
observed in both districts for MAP cultivation.
Thus, the study elucidates the fact that a very small percent of rural population in the area
who are living at higher altitude of more than 2000 msl are cultivating MAPs without proper
training facilities. Because of lack of knowledge regarding cultivation practices farmers are
getting lesser yield and resultingly they are running away from MAP cultivation. Hence in
order to meet the goals, National Medicinal Plant Board and State Medicinal Plant Board
initiative needs to emphasize in providing knowledge and information in the local region.
