Many people assume that, as BC’s provincial museum and
archives, we are fully funded by the Provincial Government.
The fact of the matter is that we need to raise about 1/3 of our
budget on our own. That requires the support of people who
care about British Columbia and care about the history we are
preserving. If you’d like to contribute to the Royal BC Museum,
and to the telling of the story of BC, we would welcome your
help. Your money will go towards developing and preserving
our collections for future generations.

fascinating stories. Our responsibility at the Royal BC Museum

Over the years, we have developed a world-class reputation
in our field. Both our collection and the exhibitions we have
developed have earned the respect of museum and archives
specialists around the world. That’s wonderful, but more

Working to expand our collection.
The Royal BC Museum has gathered a collection of 7 million
artifacts and specimens related to BC’s past. It’s the heart of
who we are, and an important link between BC’s present and
its history. The enormous range of material we have collected
helps preserve and expand our understanding of who we are
and where we came from.
Only a fraction of our collection can be displayed at any given
time. But everything is carefully researched, safeguarded and
documented. Researchers from here and around the world use
our collection to expand their understanding of human history
and the natural world. We are constantly working to grow this
collection so that the history of BC is available to all of us to
see and explore.
Passing on what we’ve learned.
Collecting and researching are important functions of the
Royal BC Museum. But we believe that our most important job
is to share this knowledge with the people of BC. Particularly
with the young people. Their understanding of our history and
our province will help to determine the kind of place BC becomes
tomorrow. That’s why the Royal BC Museum makes a huge
commitment to educational programs. And why we don’t charge
BC school groups for admission to the permanent exhibits.
We develop new programs each year for school-aged children.
They cover everything from pioneer life to marine biology.
We envision the Royal BC Museum as a place where kids
want to come and learn.
Our commitment to children extends to their families. Wonder
Sundays opens up special programs at the Royal BC Museum
on Sundays to families and young children at no charge beyond
regular admission. This stimulating and rewarding new program
is possible in large part due to the ongoing support of our donors.
Digging deeper. Literally.
The Royal BC Museum funds and directs a great deal of research.
Our scientists, historians, and archivists are constantly exploring
and revealing both the human and natural history of our province.
For example, some of our scientists are currently studying
the genetic history of plants in British Columbia. They are
coordinating these discoveries with scientists in Russia.
The results are helping to unravel the history of vegetation
in the Northern Hemisphere. This world-class research is
beginning to answer significant questions about biodiversity
and, possibly, the potential effects of climate change in this
region. It’s important work that requires an ongoing
commitment. We must raise money to keep this
research moving forward.

The history of BC is both endless and remarkable. That’s why
we are constantly developing new exhibitions. As new facets
of our story are revealed, we want to make sure that British
Columbians can learn about them.
Our recent Emily Carr Exhibition, The Other Emily, shed new
light on BC’s most iconic artist. Over the years, a number of
stereotypes had become attached to the way people saw her.
This exhibit drew on our vast collection of Carr material to
challenge those stereotypes and shine a fresh and illuminating
light on who she really was.
Next up, we are opening a new exhibition of photography,
The International Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The wonders
of nature like you’ve never seen them: through the lenses of
prize-winning photographers. This Natural History Museum
exhibition showcases more than 100 photographs in 18
categories, chosen from more than 40,000 international entries.
An inspirational, astonishing and often humourous look at
the natural world. Exhibitions like this require a real financial
commitment from the Royal BC Museum and its supporters.

helps preserve and expand our understanding of who we are
and where we came from.
Only a fraction of our collection can be displayed at any given
time. But everything is carefully researched, safeguarded and
documented. Researchers from here and around the world use
our collection to expand their understanding of human history
and the natural world. We are constantly working to grow this
collection so that the history of BC is available to all of us to
see and explore.
Passing on what we’ve learned.
Collecting and researching are important functions of the
Royal BC Museum. But we believe that our most important job
is to share this knowledge with the people of BC. Particularly
with the young people. Their understanding of our history and
our province will help to determine the kind of place BC becomes
tomorrow. That’s why the Royal BC Museum makes a huge
commitment to educational programs. And why we don’t charge
BC school groups for admission to the permanent exhibits.
We develop new programs each year for school-aged children.
They cover everything from pioneer life to marine biology.
We envision the Royal BC Museum as a place where kids
want to come and learn.
Our commitment to children extends to their families. Wonder
Sundays opens up special programs at the Royal BC Museum
on Sundays to families and young children at no charge beyond
regular admission. This stimulating and rewarding new program
is possible in large part due to the ongoing support of our donors.
Digging deeper. Literally.
The Royal BC Museum funds and directs a great deal of research.
Our scientists, historians, and archivists are constantly exploring
and revealing both the human and natural history of our province.
For example, some of our scientists are currently studying
the genetic history of plants in British Columbia. They are
coordinating these discoveries with scientists in Russia.
The results are helping to unravel the history of vegetation
in the Northern Hemisphere. This world-class research is
beginning to answer significant questions about biodiversity
and, possibly, the potential effects of climate change in this
region. It’s important work that requires an ongoing
commitment. We must raise money to keep this
research moving forward.

The history of BC is both endless and remarkable. That’s why
we are constantly developing new exhibitions. As new facets
of our story are revealed, we want to make sure that British
Columbians can learn about them.
Our recent Emily Carr Exhibition, The Other Emily, shed new
light on BC’s most iconic artist. Over the years, a number of
stereotypes had become attached to the way people saw her.
This exhibit drew on our vast collection of Carr material to
challenge those stereotypes and shine a fresh and illuminating
light on who she really was.
Next up, we are opening a new exhibition of photography,
The International Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The wonders
of nature like you’ve never seen them: through the lenses of
prize-winning photographers. This Natural History Museum
exhibition showcases more than 100 photographs in 18
categories, chosen from more than 40,000 international entries.
An inspirational, astonishing and often humourous look at
the natural world. Exhibitions like this require a real financial
commitment from the Royal BC Museum and its supporters.
