TRANSFER INFORMATION Manyofourstudentstransfertoafour-yearcollegeoruniversityaftercompletinglowerdivisioncoursesatDVC.DVChasconsistentlybeenamongthecommunitycollegesthattransfersthemoststudentstotheUniversityofCaliforniaandtotheCaliforniaStateUniversitysystems.Thekeytoourstudents’successisthattheyunderstandwhichtransferablecoursesarerequired

• foradmissionsfortheirmajor• forgeneraleducationattheirchosenfour-yearcollege.

Thethreepartcombinationofrequirementsmaybecomplexandnecessitatesthattransferstudentsseekstrongadvisingtobeassuredthecoursesinwhichtheyenrollmeetalltheirtransfercollege’srequirements.Studentsarestronglyencouragedtoworkwithourcounselorstoplantheirclassschedules.ThisplanningensuresthatstudentscompleteneededcoursesatDVCinatimelymannerandcanreducethetimeneededatthefour-yearcollegetoattainabachelor’sdegree.Eachfour-yearinstitutionhasitsownbasicpatternoflower-divisionrequirementsregardingbothgeneraleducationandspecificmajors.CSUandUCapplicantsmustalsomeetadmission,major,prerequisite,andtransferableunitrequirements.Theserequirementsvaryfromcollegetocollegeandoftenchangefromyeartoyear.Therefore,in addition to using counseling services, students are also encouragedtotakeadvantageofinformationavailableintheTransferServices,oncollegeanduniversitywebsites,inprintmaterials,andfromcollegerepresentatives.

Requirements for the Associate in Arts (AA-T) or the Associate in Science (AS-T) for CSU transferTheStudentTransferAchievementReformAct(SenateBill1440,nowcodifiedinCaliforniaEducationCodesections66746-66749)guaranteesadmissiontoaCaliforniaStateUniversity(CSU)campusforanycommunitycollegestudent who completes an “associate degree for transfer”, anewlyestablishedvariationoftheassociatedegreestraditionallyofferedataCaliforniacommunitycollege.Theassociateinartsfortransfer(AA-T)ortheassociateinsciencefortransfer(AS-T)isintendedforstudentswhoplantocompleteabachelor’sdegreeinasimilarmajorataCSUcampus.Studentscompletingthesedegrees(AA-TorAS-T)areguaranteedadmissiontotheCSUsystem,butnottoaparticularcampusormajor.Inordertoearnoneofthesedegrees,studentsmustcompleteaminimumof60requiredtermunitsofCSU-transferablecourseworkwithaminimumGPAof2.0.StudentstransferringtoaCSUcampusthatdoesaccepttheAA-TorAS-Twillberequiredtocompletenomorethan60unitsaftertransfertoearnabachelor’sdegree(unlessthemajorisadesignated“high-unit”major).ThisdegreemaynotbethebestoptionforstudentsintendingtotransfertoaparticularCSUcampusortouniversityorcollegethatisnotpartoftheCSUsystem.Studentsshouldconsult with a counselor when planning to complete the degreeformoreinformationonuniversityadmissionandtransferrequirements.Atthetimeofcatalogpublication,nomajorsfortheAA-TorAS-Thavebeenapproved.Majorsareunderdevelopment.For more information, please see a counselor and www.dvc.eduformoreinformation.

Impacted majors Thetermimpactedmeansthattheprogramusuallyattractsmanymoreapplicantsthanitcanaccept.Consequently,therearespecialrequirementsandselectionproceduresforadmission.SometimesentirecampusessuchasCalPolySanLuisObispoandSanDiegoStateUniversityareimpactedandallmajorsthererequiremorethantheminimumrequirementsforadmission.ImpactedmajorsatindividualCSUcampusescanvaryfromyeartoyear.Someexamplesofimpactedmajorsarebusinessadministrationandnursing.StudentsshouldrefertothespecificCSUcampuswebsiteor www.assist.org or www.csumentor.edu for current informationregardingimpactedmajors.Studentsareencouraged to meet with a counselor to determine if the majortheyareconsideringisimpactedandwhatadditionalrequirementsarenecessarytotransfer.

CSU General education breadth require-ments (CSU G.E.)CompletionofthepatternofcourseslistedasGeneralEducationOption3intheRequirementssectionensuresthat students will have completed all of their lower division generaleducationcoursestowardstheirbachelor’sdegreeatCSU.Afterastudenthascompletedthispattern,heorshemayrequestcertificationofitscompletion.Withthiscertification,studentswillberesponsibleonlyforanadditional nine upper division semester units in general education.CertificationisnotautomaticandmustberequestedthroughtheDVCAdmissionsandRecordsOffice.ThecurrentlistofcoursesapprovedformeetingCSUG.E.isavailableintheDVCCounselingCenterorat www.assist.org.SeethepatternofcourseslistedasGeneralEducationOption3inthiscataloginSectionThree:Requirements.StudentsmaychoosetocompletetheIGETCpatternofcoursesratherthanCSUG.E.BreadthforCSU.ThiswillhavethesamebenefitascertificationinCSUG.E.Breadth.Reminder:StudentsmustrequestthattheCSUG.E.certificationbesenttotheCSUcampusthattheywillbeattending.CompletetheCSUG.E.certificationrequestformattheDVCAdmissionsandRecordsOffice.

Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)TheIGETCisageneraleducationpatternthatcommunitycollegetransferstudentscanusetofulfilllower-divisiongeneraleducationrequirementsfortheCSUormanycollegesintheUCsystemwithouttheneedtotakeadditionallower-divisiongeneraleducationcoursesaftertransfer.ItisdesignedforusebyCaliforniacommunitycollegestudents.StudentswhohaveattendedaCSU,UC,independentorout-of-statecollegeoruniversityshouldconsultwithacounselortodetermineiftheuseofIGETCisappropriatetoreachtheirgoal.IGETCisnotrightforallstudentsplanningtotransfer.TheIGETCisonlyonewaytofulfillthelower-divisiongeneraleducationrequirementsoftheUCorCSU.Itisnot recommended for certain majors and some schools orcollegeswithinUCdonotacceptIGETC.Studentspursuingmajorsthatrequireextensivelower-divisionmajorpreparationmaynotfindtheIGETCoptiontobeadvantageousandmaybebetterservedbytakingcoursesthatfulfillthegeneraleducationrequirementsoftheUCorCSUcollegetowhichtheyplantotransfer.TheIGETCwillprobablybemostusefulforstudentswhowanttokeeptheiroptionsopenbeforemakingafinaldecisionabouttransferringtoaparticularCSUorUCcampusoraparticularmajor.ItisrecommendedthattheentireIGETCpatternbecompletedpriortotransfer.Ifastudent
