Connecting rod screws for WRTSIL 20,replacement interval and new revision

Engine type This Technical Bulletin concerns all WRTSIL

20 engines independentof fuel oil used or operating profile.

General The reasons for the Technical Bulletin

As a safety precaution, Wrtsil has stipulated replacement intervals forthe WRTSIL 20 connecting rod screws.

The connecting rod screw for WRTSIL 20 has been revised tomake maintenance more convenient.

    Recommendation, replacement interval

The replacement of the connecting rod screws is recommended to take

place at the latest every 24000 operating hours. Replacement of theconnecting rod screws can be justified with fewer operating hours in orderto be in line with normal piston overhaul intervals and thus avoidunnecessary opening/tightening of the connecting rod big end.

    Special notes:

The connecting rod screw replacement interval recommendation isindependent of the screw revision.

The nuts for the connecting rod screws do not need to be replaced,

unless they appear damaged. Clean and examine the nuts carefully atevery piston overhaul.

    Connecting rod screw characteristics

The previous connecting rod screw had an end plug, the new standardconnecting rod screw is without end plug. Both screws are illustrated belowand the nominal length is as a reference to recognize the difference.

The new connecting rod screw without the end plug was introduced in themiddle of 2003 and will replace the one with an end plug.

    Recommendation, connecting rod screw

For proper assembly of the connecting rod screws see OperatingInstruction 2011Q002, Assembly procedure for the connecting rod bigend, which also includes chapter 11 from the Engine Instruction Manual.

    Caution!

An end plug may under no circumstances be used with the newtype of connecting rod screw.

Check that no plug remains in the threaded holes of theconnecting rod before mounting the screws.
