My Goals For the Course
Be an Introductory Course
• We need low-stakes "pre-requisite" courses in Coursera
• How to behave
• How to use the software
• How to write
• Figure out technical issues
• How to learn from others and help others learn....
Be an Open Learning Community
• Open Source works well when there is a "Benevolent Dictator"
• There needs to be real and enforced rules - but as few as possible
• Those in power must not hide behind their power and must share their power with those who show the right behavior
• Must make valued behaviors "infectious" / "amplified"

Things That Worked Well• Using Twitter as the way to contact
me
• Discussion tool is outstanding
• Multi-take quizzes with auto-morphing questions
• Lecture video format with me looking at the Cintiq
• Discussion forums and their voting
• Cognitive load from the forums to me was manageable
• Mail to the class needed to come from me
• Office hours as small focus groups to help me improve the course
Things I Would Do Differently• Better Welcome Lecture
• How to use the software lecture from Coursera (i.e. like resources)
• How and when to use the "flag" icon
• How do Late Days work?????
• Describe community communication guidelines - when we will delete a thread
• Delete threads more often
• Faster lecture translating
• All writing assignments are extra credit (because this is an intro class)
• I still don't get reputation points and how I should use them
• More student editable spaces
Things I Would Do Differently• Better way to identify natural leaders
in the community and give them ways to communicate broadly other than "+1 votes" in the discussion
• Split lectures at week boundaries (oops)
• Add a "breath/pause" during lecture recording to allow me to later decide where to put a question.
• Come up with an extensive preview so people don't register just to peek
• Tell late entrants that after week 3 they will not likely get a certificate - perhaps even close registration - you can go on a wait list and see the materials but not take the quizzes
• I would like to come up with a self-paced version - but the software would need to be different
Going Forward...
My personal quest to teach techology to "everyone else"...
What Course Will I Teach Next?
• IHTS will likely be taught 2-3 times per year
• There is an approval process for new Coursera courses at University of Michigan and I will apply to teach "Python for Informatics" - but that will take some time
• I will be preparing materials and I will make them public as I get them ready through my current web sites that I use for my UMich courses
A Sequence of Courses
• Internet History, Technology, and Security
• Raise skill, confidence, and cause students to become curious
• Python for Informatics: Exploring Data
• Teaching programming as a way to explore people, information and technology (i.e. not applied math and not the science of computers)
• Building Dynamic Web Sites with Google App Engine
• HTML, CSS, Python, Database, JavaScript, JQuery ...
Inverting my Classroom January 2013
Signed Certificates
• I will personally sign your certificate
• Once you receive your certificate it will have my digital signature on it
• Print a copy of your certificate, mail it to me (address in a course-wide email), and include a self-addressed stamped envelope
• I will sign and return all that I get...
Thank you.
