2012-13 Point Park University Women’s Basketball — NAIA Division II National Tournament, AMC Champs 2011-12

SEASON OUTLOOK The Point Park University women’s basketball team is coming off its best season ever in

2011-12 with a final record of 23-7 overall, 12-2 AMC. The Pioneers made the NAIA Divi-

sion II national tournament for the first time ever after winning their first conference title

in program history. Also, Point Park gained a national ranking for the first time ever and

ended the year ranked No. 21 in the NAIA Division II Top 25 Poll. The 23 wins were the

most since the program was created in 1978-79.

After that long list of accomplishments, the Pioneers and second-year head coach Tony

Grenek certainly set the bar of expectations high for 2012-13. With a roster featuring 10 of

14 letter winners returning — including two starters — the Pioneers have within their

reach the chance for the same goals. And with a new year comes a new conference, the

Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, through which to navigate. Point Park was

picked in the KIAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll (Oct. 25) (see right) to finish 3rd of 9 teams. On

the national stage, the Pioneers are rated in the ‘others receiving votes’ section at No. 28

overall in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Preseason Top 25 Poll.

While Point Park does have plenty of returners from last year, it will need to establish a

new identity with several players playing much bigger roles than they did a year ago.

However, two returning starters who will return to their same roles are senior guards

April Austin (Penn Hills, Pa.) and Emily Schartner (Finleyville, Pa.), both of which are

former NCAA Division I transfers. Austin has scored 1,013 points in her three years at

Point Park since transferring from Dayton. She has one semester of eligibility left and will

become active Dec. 15 vs. PSU-Fayette. Schartner came to Point Park last year after being at

NJIT. She was the AMC Newcomer of the Year in 2011-12. Austin is a very quick point

guard who is Point Park’s record holder for 3-point field goals made in a career, season

and game. She is also great at setting up her teammates and defending. At 5-11, Schartner

has the height and skills to play inside and out on both ends of the floor, and is also one of

the top 3-point shooters on the team.

Another key player returning is junior guard/forward Katresa Savisky (Butler, Pa.), who

was the first player off the bench last year after transferring in from Butler County CC. The

Pioneers did not go very deep into the bench last year, so the returners beyond Savisky

will need to take on expanded roles this season.

In that group of players are several guards including sophomore Haley Sauer (Pittsburgh,

Pa.), senior Maura McCaslin (West Sunbury, Pa.) and senior Brittany Dunmire (Munhall,

Pa.). All three of those players are ready to take on increased minutes the second year play-

ing under Grenek’s system. Grenek praised all three of them for picking up their games in

the offseason. The need will be especially apparent until Austin returns Dec. 15. Sauer and

McCaslin can both play the 1 and 2 positions effectively while Dunmire is a 3-pt shooter.

In the front court, Point Park needs to replace three starters including All-AMC selection

Joncelyn Peterkin, a 6-2 center who averaged 9.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg and 2.1 bpg. Also gone are

senior guard/forwards Kristen Beatty (8.1 ppg) and Kristen Veseleny (4.9 ppg). Peterkin

was a major factor on both ends while Beatty and Veseleny were very solid role players

who played the hard defense the Grenek expects.

Katresa Savisky (Butler, Pa.) is a top returning forward who will play a bigger role than

her sixth-man duties of a year ago. A junior, Savisky is in her second year with the Pio-

neers after being an NJCAA All-Region player at Butler Count CC. Also returning is senior

Maeve Gallagher (Brookline, Pa.), who was one of the first players off the bench last year.

A three-sport athlete, she will join the team after the women’s soccer seasons ends. Other

post players back are seniors Anna-Maria Boshkova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Ashley Camp-

bell (Chicora, Pa.). Both are have a nice offensive game to provide scoring off the bench. A

position change for junior Teresa Davis (Vermilion, Ohio) has put her in the post as op-

posed to out front. At 5-6, she has the athleticism to be effective there. (Continued on Page 3)

The top newcomer in the post is sophomore Ja’Nia McPhatter (New Castle, Pa.), a trans-

fer from NCAA Division III La Roche, which is just north of campus. McPhatter is a very

athletic player at 5-9 who has the ability to average a double-double of points and re-

bounds, according to coach Grenek. She will be inserted into the starting lineup right

away and needs to make up for the void left by Peterkin. Also new to the frontcourt is

Anna Shaw (Mingo Junction, Ohio), a 6-0 center who is back after sitting out last season.

She had good rebounding numbers in her limited playing time two years ago. The Pio-

neers also added freshman center Briaua Brownfield (McKeesport, Pa.), who adds

depth and height at 5-11.

Point Park’s post will have a few players become available after the fall sports season

ends. Maeve Gallagher (Soccer), Anna Shaw (Soccer) and Ashley Campbell (Volleyball)

will join the team once their seasons end.

The Pioneers added a couple of freshman pieces to their backcourt with the arrival of

guard Alexa Xenakis (Keystone Oaks HS), Carly Corcoran (Baldwin HS) and Erin Gil-

martin (Springdale HS). Xenakis averaged 15.2 ppg as a 1,000-career point scorer at Key-

stone Oaks. Corcoran averaged a solid 8.6 ppg and 4.0 rpg as a starter on a good Bald-

win team, and Gilmartin was a standout, all-section player at Springdale. Also a soccer

player at Point Park, Gilmartin is out for the year with a knee injury she suffered this

past fall.

With the returning and incoming personnel, Grenek says the team should be able to

score more points than last year while also playing some of the best defense in the nation

once again. Point Park ranked second in the NAIA Division II last year in scoring de-

fense at 51.6 ppg. The stingy defense was sixth nationally in field-goal percentage de-

fense (.334), second in turnover margin (+8.2), 16th in 3-point defense (.270) and ninth in

steals per game (12.6 spg). That defense was a main reason why the Pioneers were 11th

in the country in scoring margin (+12.9 ppg) despite only having one double-digit scorer

(April Austin, 10.8 ppg). The Pioneers averaged 64.7 ppg as a team last year.

Quotes from Coach Tony Grenek about the 2012-13 season:

—“The expectations are higher this year given what we accomplished last year, and that is a very

good thing. Our players are hungry and determined to get back to the NAIA Division II national

tournament. But at the same time, we need to create a new identity for this year’s team.

—“We were senior-laden last year and had great leadership from those players. We need to find

that same veteran leadership this year to be successful.”

—”We want to play the same tough defense again this year, and our goal as always is to keep

teams under 60 points. There is room for improvement defensively, particularly with on-the ball

pressure. Our athleticism has improved this year, which will allow us to do better in that area.

Our 2-3 zone was our bread-and-butter last year, and we need to see improvement in the man.”

—”We should be improved offensively and able to score more than what we averaged last year.

We have some players who are more capable offensively getting more minutes than before.”

HEAD COACH TONY GRENEK — 2nd season (Career Record 23-7)

Tony Grenek is in his second year as head coach at Point Park. He was hired in May 2011. The 2012-13 season will be his 11th year as a coach on

the college level and his sixth year as a head coach. He was 23-7 in his first year at Point Park to earn AMC Coach of the Year honors. The 23

wins were the most in a single season for Point Park. He now stands in 5th place of the 16 coaches in Pioneers history for most career wins.

Prior to Point Park, Grenek was the top women’s assistant at NCAA Division II Seton Hill for five years from 2005-10. There, he was mainly

responsible for running the team’s defense and make the calls defensively. He helped the Griffins to the NCAA DII national tournament in 2009

-10, their second season eligible for the tourney. Seton Hill led the WVIAC in scoring defense that year (60.0).

Grenek was the head men’s coach at Butler Co. CC for five years from 2001-05. There he was named Western PA Coach of the Year in 2004-05

after rebuilding the non-scholarship program that had little interest. His teams made the Region 20 playoffs all five years and were 35-19 in final

two years there. Grenek earned a bachelor’s degree in General Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1994 and a bachelor’s

degree in Elementary Education from Slippery Rock University in 1998.

2011-12 SEASON RECAP — Overall Record: 23-7 overall, 12-2 AMC Last year was an historic one for the Point Park Pioneers with a school record for wins, and first-ever conference title and national tournament

appearance. The season started out with a loss at Mt. Vernon Nazarene, but the Pioneers followed that up with an impressive 2-0 sweep at the

Rio Grande Bevo Francis Tournament to win the championship there. Then the Pioneers hit a rough stretch of the schedule in which they

played four games in five days. After coming out of those games with two wins and two losses, the overall record stood at 5-4.

It was at that point that the Pioneers hit their stride. Starting with a slim, 56-54 win at Carnegie Mellon Dec. 10, the Pioneers rattled off a school-

record 13-straight wins for an 18-4 record by Feb. 4. The streak included a perfect, 9-0 start to the AMC schedule. The biggest win in that stretch

was a 51-43 home win over nationally ranked Daemen Jan. 28, 2012. That win gave the Pioneers first place in the AMC and earned them their

first-ever national ranking at No. 25 in the next week’s NAIA Division II Top 25 Poll.

Point Park’s 13-game win streak finally came to an end on Feb. 7, 2012 with a narrow road loss at Walsh, 48-46. But the Pioneers stayed on

course to win their next three conference games over Roberts Wesleyan, Fisher and Carlow to improve to 12-1 AMC. Although Point Park lost

its regular-season finale at Daemen, 67-51, on Feb. 18, it still tied for the AMC Regular Season Title at 12-2. And since they had the tiebreaker

over a Daemen team that was also 12-2 AMC, the Pioneers got the No. 1 in the AMC Tournament.

Point Park’s AMC Tournament appearance was their first post-season qualification since 1993-94 in the KECC. The Pioneers beat No. 4 seed

Houghton, 71-54, in the first round to advance to the finals where they would host Daemen. And with a 60-48 win over the No. 2 seed Wildcats,

Point Park won the AMC Tournament title and locked up the conference’s automatic bid to the NAIA DII National Tournament.

Point Park received a No. 7 seed in the national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The Pioneers drew No. 2 seed and No. 10-ranked Corban

(Ore), which came away with a slim, 60-58 victory over unranked Point Park. The Pioneers ended the year with their highest ranking ever at

No. 21 in the Final NAIA DII Top 25 Poll.
