SCHEDULE

In her fifth season at the helm of the Howard University women’s basketball team, head coach Niki Reid Geckeler announces the 2012-13 basketball schedule.

This season, the Lady Bison will welcome 12 teams to Burr Gymnasium on the Howard University campus, while venturing to 16 Division I institutions. Of the 28 contests, HU will face 12 non-conference opponents, along with facing 15 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season and the challenge ahead,” said head women’s basketball coach Niki Reid Geckeler. “We have a very competitive national schedule and hope to get better each game as we prepare for MEAC play.”

HU kicks off the season with four consecutive road games, beginning with a two-game swing in Pennsylvania. On Friday, Nov. 9 the Lady Bison take on Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7:00 p.m. in Loretta Pa., then on the Nittany Lions of Penn State on Sunday, Nov. 11 in State College, Pa. The Lady Bison then head to the “Windy City” for two days of hardwood action against DePaul on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Northwestern on Monday, Nov. 19.

The Lady Bison open at home on Friday, Nov. 23, as they welcome Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Bowie State to Burr gym at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 25 HU hosts Mount Saint Mary’s at 7:00 p.m., followed by hosting Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The first MEAC competition of the season takes place in Dover, Del., against Delaware State at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 15 HU takes on cross-town foe George Washington in Washington, D.C. The next two contests of the season take place in California and Ohio. On Friday, Dec. 21 HU goes up against Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., at 1:00 p.m., then the Lady Bison head to Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, Dec. 30 to play Ohio State at 2:00 p.m.

HU finally returns to Burr to host Temple on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m.

MEAC action returns with HU heading to Coppin State in Baltimore, Md., on Monday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 12 the mighty blue and white take on the reigning MEAC champions Hampton at 2:00 p.m. in Burr gym. During the 2011-12 campaign, the two HUs met in the MEAC championship contest, where Hampton defeated

Howard 54-53 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Norfolk State visits Burr gym on Monday, Jan. 14

for 5:30 p.m. before HU goes on a four-game road stint. On Saturday, Jan. 19 Howard goes toe-to-toe with North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C., followed by a Monday, Jan. 21 contest against North Carolina Central.

HU continues its road action in Newark, N.J., to play NJIT on Thursday, Jan. 24 for the last non-conference game of the season.

On Monday, Jan. 28 Howard heads to Hampton for their second regular-season contest.

The next four games take place in Washington, D.C., with Savannah State (Saturday, Feb. 2), South Carolina State (Monday, Feb. 4), Maryland Eastern Shore (Saturday, Feb. 9), and Morgan State (Monday, Feb. 11).

HU migrates south to go toe-to-toe with Florida A&M (Saturday, Feb. 16) and Bethune-Cookman (Monday, Feb. 18).

Howard welcomes Coppin State to Burr on Saturday, Feb. 23, the contest is slated for 2:00 p.m.

The final regular-season away game takes place on Monday, Feb. 25 against Maryland Eastern Shore, while the final regular-season home game is scheduled for Monday, March 2. During the final home, Coach G will honor her senior student-athletes.

On Tuesday, March 5 Howard ventures to Norfolk, Va., in its attempt to clutch the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title.

The Lady Bison will be challenged with a tough national schedule that features multiple NCAA and WNIT opponents from the 2011-12. Eight seniors, which includes All-Americans Saadia Doyle and Tamoria Holmes, return their final run at the coveted Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Title.

For the second consecutive year the Lady Bison were the runner-up at the MEAC Tournament and for the first time in program history accepted a bid for postseason play in the WNIT, where HU fell short to Virginia 59-56 in a thrilling overtime game during the 2011-12 campaign.

This season, Lady Bison roster features eight seniors, two red-shirt juniors and one sophomore, while welcoming two freshmen to the Bison family. The group of 13 is “hungry and humble” and ready to build on their record setting 2011-12 season.

“With such a veteran group, we are very excited about this season. Each player went home this summer and really focused on improving various aspects of their game: physically and mentally. In addition we have a group of

freshmen who have come in with the same focus and drive to be the best,” said Coach G.

BE ALL IN, GO ALL OUT

“Since last year we have lived by the premise of, “All In” and this year is no different. For this season “All In, Go All Out” isn’t a motto it is the basis of the way we do things in this program,” said Coach G.

“We know that as long as we stay focused on the process and prepare the right way, that the results will take care of themselves. We take a blue collar approach to getting better which is if we come to practice each and every day with our hard hats ready to work that we will see the benefits.”

“We also know that last year was just that, and we must focus squarely on this year, stay in the moment and earn each victory one possession and one game at a time,” Coach G concluded.

LEADERSHIP

While captains have not been designated, Coach G and her staff have identified seniors Cheyenne Curly-Payne, Doyle, Holmes and Kara Smith as leaders on and off of the floor. They also look towards these young ladies as being the emotional catalyst for this season.

“Cheyenne Curley-Payne has been our general on the floor the last couple of years. Tomaria Holmes is arguably one of the fastest and most dynamic guards in the country while Kara is the glue that holds the team together. Freshmen guard Te’Shya Heslip has come on strong during preseason and we are looking forward to some great things for her. I have all the confidence in these ladies as they run the show this season,” said Coach G.

Coach G continued by commenting about her All-American post player, “Saadia has been a steady force in our program for the past three years. She has proven that she can compete with the best in the MEAC and in the nation. So

we are looking forward to Saadia continuing her reckless mentality on the boards paired with her offensive prowess on the court. I am confident that she will be ready for an exciting senior year.”

RETURNEES

Along with the leadership of Curly-Payne, Holmes, Doyle and Smith, Coach G returns eight seniors, two red-shirt juniors and one sophomore from the 2012-13 roster, who will play a critical role this season.

• #5 Cheyenne Curley-Payne: 2011-12: Appeared in all 33 games for the Lady Bison…Averaged 30.7 minutes of play per contest…Averaged 6.5 points per game, 4.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists…Shot 30.2 percent from the field, shot 21.6 percent from the 3-point line, and shot 68.7 percent in free throws…Scored in double-digits in three

games of the season…Led the Lady Bison in both steals and assists…Scored a season-best of 20 points against South Carolina State (Jan. 30).

• #32 Nicole Deterville: 2011-12: Appeared in all 33 games for the Lady Bison…Averaged 23.8 minutes of play per contest…Averaged 1.9 points per game, 6.2 rebounds…Shot 34.9 percent from the field, and 57.6 percent from the free-throw line…Was second on the team in rebounds with 203 for the season…Leading the Lady Bison in blocked shots with 24 for the season.

NEWCOMERS

To accompany her seasoned squad, Coach G welcomes Imani Bailey and Heslip.

“Te’Shya Heslip is a dynamic point guard. Her speed, her ability to score paired with her knowledge of the game and leadership skills will prove to be an asset to the program this season and for years to come. I am really expecting special things from her on both ends of the court this season,” said Coach G.

Heslip joins the squad following a District Championship and Regional Championship with

Potomac High School. The Dumfries, Va., native was named All-District, All-Region, All-State (1st team), and one of Top Ten Regional student-athletes.

“Imani Bailey is a pure scoring guard. She can shoot the deep 3 ball as well as break you down off of the dribble. She is very savvy with the ball and has a great understanding of the game. We were very fortunate when we landed these two talented players from the local DMV area. Both young women will have an immediate impact on the program,” said Coach G.

Bailey hails from Laurel, Md., where she graduated from Meade High School where she was on the Honor Roll. Athletically, Bailey was named All-Conference and finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer. She ended her high school career with 17 points per contests and five assists per game.

Niki Reid Geckeler is entering her fifth year at Howard University.

Known as Coach G to her staff, players and peers, Geckeler came to Howard after ten years at Georgetown University, where she served as an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and academic advisor with the women’s basketball team.

Under Coach G’s leadership, the 2012 campaign

In the 2011 Women’s National Invitation Tournament after leading the Lady Bison to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship game last season against conference-rival Hampton. Entering into the 2011 MEAC Championship game, Coach G’s team was second in the conference in scoring defense (54.6) and third in free throw shooting (68 percent), in field goal percentage defense (37 percent) and turnover margin.

Within her three complete seasons of coaching at Howard, Coach G has propelled two players into the Lady Bison 1,000 point club––Zykia Brown (1,255, 2007-10) and Saadia Doyle (1,098, 2009-11) who accomplished the feat in a mere two years of play and added more than 500 rebounds to her career.

Under the guidance of Coach G, Brown and Doyle emerged as two of the greatest players to come out of Howard and the MEAC. During the 2010-11 season Doyle was named the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and in the season prior she was named the 2010 MEAC Rookie of the Year. Last season Doyle led the conference in scoring and joined Howard’s 1,000 point club in only two seasons of play.

Nationally, Doyle ranked No. 22 in with 13 double-double performances. The careers of Cheyenne Curley-Payne and Tamoria Holmes were successful nurtured by Geckeler and her staff, and the sophomores’ roles proved critical during the 2010-11 season. At the helm of the offense, Curley-Payne quickly propelled herself as one of Howard’s all-time assist leaders as she currently ranks fifth with 200. Holmes’ performance during the 2011 MEAC tournament ultimately helped the Lady Bison push through to the championship game after stellar performances in the early rounds.

The 2008-09 Lady Bison more than doubled its win total from the previous year under Geckeler’s tutelage.The Bison also produced a MEAC Defensive Player of the Week selection in Tamaya Daniels and Brown was named to

the 2009 All-MEAC Second Team. She also had eight players earn All-Big East All-Academic accolades.

Prior to joining the Georgetown coaching ranks Coach G served the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Fordham University. Geckeler’s first year as the top assistant at Fordham (2002-03), the Rams had a ground-breaking year, accomplishing a long list of firsts, including their first back-to-back Atlantic 10 road wins and their first four-game winning streak in Atlantic 10 play. Fordham also boasted two four-game winning streaks on the year for the first time since 1994-95, swept an Atlantic 10 opponent for the first time since 1998-99, and picked up their first-ever win at Saint Joseph’s. During her tenure at Fordham, two players, Mobolaji Akiode and Monica Mack, were named Atlantic 10 Most Improved Player in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

As a player, Reid Geckeler was tri-captain of Georgetown’s 1992-93 team that advanced to the “Sweet 16”of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season with a 23-7 record and a Top 25 ranking. The Hoyas were 15-3 in the Big East and took the regular-season conference championship. Geckeler finished her career as a four-year starter at point guard and upon graduating in 1993 with a degree in psychology, she left Georgetown as the school’s leader in assists and three-point field goal percentage.

During her four seasons as a student-athlete, Reid Geckeler was honored with the Coaches’ Award as the team’s Most Valuable Player in the 1991-92 season, was the recipient of the team’s Best Defensive Player award for the 1990-91 campaign and was the winner of the Hustle Award in both 1989-90 and 1990-91.

Coach G and her husband, Timothy, have a 2-year old daughter, MaKenzie. The couple resides in Waldorf, Md.

Brian Johnson is in his third season at Howard. Prior to HU, Johnson served as lead scout/assistant coach for the WNBA Washington Mystics for the 2008 season. Prior to that, Johnson was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Rider University for three years.

No stranger to the MEAC, Johnson also had a coaching stint at Morgan State. He was on the coaching staffs at American University from 2002-2004 and Towson University in 1999-2001.

Johnson was with the New York Liberty (WNBA) for the 2001 season working as the assistant advance scouting/ video coordinator. He was also an advance scout for the New York Liberty and Washington Mystics, respectively.

A native Washingtonian, Johnson received his bachelor’s degree from Drexel in 1998. He and his wife, Crystal and son Christian, reside in the District.

James Simmons comes to Howard from Hampton University where he served as the lead assistant coach with the men’s basketball program. He played an integral part in the men’s team winning the 2011 MEAC Tournament championship and advancing to the NCAAs.

At Hampton, his duties included overall player development, film breakdown, opponent scouting and assisting with the day-to-day operations of the program.

Prior to Hampton, Simmons served as an assistant coach at Bowie State, where in a six-year span, the Bulldogs won the 2003 CIAA championship and was ranked No. 1 in the country in the 2004-05 season; Bowie State made three NCAA Division II tournaments during Simmons’ tenure. Simmons spent 10 years each with the men’s and women’s basketball programs at Bowie State, serving as an assistant, associate head, and interim head coach.

Before his career on the collegiate level, Simmons was an assistant boy’s varsity coach for six seasons at Laurel (Md.) High School. He began his coaching career in 1997 as head JV boy’s coach at Laurel.

He played small and power forward for Prince George’s Community College for two years after graduating from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in 1990. From Prince George’s, where he earned JUCO Division II Honorable Mention in 1995, Simmons transferred to Belford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education after three years.

Simmons continued to play basketball for the semi-pro Maryland All-Stars in 1996 and played in the Urban Coalition League in 1996 and 1997. He was also Executive-director of Revenue and Personnel for Charm City Basketball, Inc. out of Baltimore, while also playing for such teams as Metro Nighthawks, Prince George’s All-Stars and the Kenner Summer Pro League.

Simmons, a native of Washington, D.C. and a member of the National Educators Association, is single and the father of four, twins Brandi and Brittanee (20), Natece (17) and Jalynn (11).

Ariel V. Germain

Howard University announces Ariel V. Germain as the new Assistant Sports Information Director.

“We are very excited about getting Ariel here in athletics department and in sports information office,” said Howard Sports Information Director Edward Hill. “She brings the whole package. Not only does she have the knowledge and skill necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing profession, she has also obviously enhanced her career status through coaching experience, her marketing background, having served as an athletics administrator and providing leadership training for student-athletes. I think that the staff, coaches and student-athletes at Howard will benefit immensely from her appointment.”

Ariel V. Germain begins her time as a Bison following three years at North Carolina Central University. During her time at NCCU, Germain served as the Assistant Sports Information Director for two years and a graduate assistant within the department for one season, she was the primary contact for volleyball, women’s basketball, softball and men’s and women’s tennis.

Germain joined the NCCU Sports Information Department following 11-month stint as the Academic Support Assistant and Compliance Intern at NCCU.

She is currently seeking her master’s degree in athletic administration from North Carolina Central University.

In December 2006, Germain earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with an emphasis in journalism and a minor in english literature from North Carolina Central University.

While at NCCU, Germain was a member of the women’s volleyball team. From 2002-05, Germain was named to the 2002 All-Rookie Team, 2nd team All-Conference (2002-03), 1st team All-Conference (2004-05). As a setter, she led her team to two back-to-back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships. Germain still holds the career setting record at NCCU with 4036 assists.

Aside from her athletic accomplishments, Germain served as president, secretary and student advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). Attended the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)/ SAAC Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., and received the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Scholarship for the fall 2006 semester. Germain was the sports editor for the university newspaper The Campus Echo in the final semester of her matriculation.

In the spring of 2006, she was a marketing intern with the formally known WLFL UPN 28/WRDC WB 22. Her duties included writing press releases, contacting event contributors and assisting with annual events. Germain helped to coordinate the “America’s Next Top Model” casting call in Fayetteville, N.C., UPN 28’s Most Soulful Gospel Sound hosted ‘Play’ of “Kid and Play,” WWE promotions and other network related events and promotions.

In the fall of 2005, Germain began coaching volleyball with the Jammers Volleyball Club (JVC) in Durham, N.C. Over three years with JVC, she was the head coach of the girl’s 15 and under team, girl’s 16 and under team, the assistant to the girl’s 17 and under team, and the setting coach.

Following her stint with JVC, Germain traveled to Greensboro, N.C., to become the assistant women’s volleyball coach for the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University. Aside from her coaching responsibilities, she implemented additional study hall requirements, developed a volleyball alumni club, and coordinated various community service projects.

In her spare time, Germain enjoys playing competitive volleyball, volunteering, tutoring and serving her community. She is a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars.

Germain is from Detroit, Mich. She is the daughter of Lio (deceased) and Brenda Germain and has a younger sister, Alexsys R. Pullen.

She resides in Washington, D.C. with her dog Loki.

The NCAA defines an institution as the University, its employees, its student-athletes, and its representatives of athletics interests, including parents, alumnus and fans. Therefore beware of the following:

NCAA BYLAW 13.1.2.1

In Division I, representatives of an institution’s athletics interests are prohibited from making in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts, including written and/or telephonic communications with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians.

A prospect is defined as any student who has started classes for the ninth grade, whether the student participates in athletics is not relevant to the classification as a prospect and neither is gender.

Written or telephonic communications includes email, instant messaging, paging, video conferencing, faxing and text messaging.

NCAA Bylaw 16.02.3

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

Unless you are willing to give a benefit to all 10,500 students at Howard, don’t give it to a student-athlete or a prospect.

Sidney A. Ribeau is the 16th president of Howard Uni-versity and the sixth African American to serve as its chief executive officer. Since taking office in August 2008, Ribeau has initiated a comprehensive academic renewal for all 170 plus programs; initiated $150 million facilities renewal initiative; improved the University’s infrastruc-ture and business operations; expanded the university’s international footprint; solidified its legacy of leadership and service; and enhanced its research capabilities, par-ticularly in the STEM disciplines. Recognizing students as one of Howard University’s greatest resources, Ribeau has fostered an environment in which teaching and learn-ing are ongoing priorities.

Before coming to Howard University, Ribeau served as the president of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Bowling Green, OH. Over the course of 13 years, he initiated and led a comprehensive campaign that raised more than $180 million to fund a number of capital initia-tives, including the construction of a regional campus. The university was also recognized, during his tenure, for its residential learning communities, values-based educa-tion, and innovative graduate programs.

Ribeau holds a B.S. degree from Wayne State University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Interpersonal and Group Communication from the University of Illinois, Urba-na–Champaign. In 1976, he joined the California State University Los Angeles faculty as a professor of commu-nication studies. He received accolades as an outstand-ing instructor and student adviser, and, in 1984, he was named the chair of the university’s Pan African Studies Department—a position that he held until 1987 when he

was named dean of Undergraduate Studies on the uni-versity’s San Bernardino campus. Three years later,

Ribeau was appointed dean of the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo campus, and, in 1992, he was named vice president for Academic Affairs on the university’s Pomona campus.

He currently serves on the board of directors for a num-ber of organizations, including the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association–College Retirement Equities Fund, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, Worthington Industries, the Association of Governing Boards, the Association of American Colleges and Univer-sities, and the Consortium of University Presidents. He has received distinguished alumnus awards from Wayne State University and the University of Illinois; scholarly recognition from the National Communication Associa-tion; the President’s Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and was named the 2012 Educator of the Year by the World Affairs Council.

Louis “Skip” Perkins Jr., athletics director at University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB), has been named Howard University’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

“At Howard, we are committed to building and bolster-ing our intercollegiate program to ensure that student-athletes succeed in the classroom and compete at the highest levels in their respective arenas,” Ribeau said. “We sought a leader who is committed to academic and athletic excellence; we found that in Skip Perkins.”

Perkins will assume responsibility for Howard’s 19 varsity athletic programs, including Division 1 football and Division 1 basketball. Other sports programs include soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field for men and women; and four programs – bowling, lacrosse, volleyball and softball – in which only women participate.

“It’s a truly humbling and exciting experience for me to have the opportunity to return to the Washington, D.C. area to lead Howard University’s De-partment of Intercollegiate Athletics,” Perkins said. “I believe Howard’s and Presi-dent Ribeau’s emphasis on academic and athletic excel-lence will serve as the foundation for returning Bison Athletics to national prominence. “

During Perkins’ three-year tenure, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Department of Athletics steadily improved. The UAPB athletic program won a total of five championships – highlighted by titles in women’s cross country (2007 and 2009); men’s cross country (2009); women’s soccer (2009) and men’s basketball (2010).

Under his leadership, the UAPB athletic facilities were significantly improved. The newly constructed, state-of-the-art, $5 million J. Thomas May Athletic Field House and football prac-tice field currently serves as one of the premier athletic facilities in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and in

the Southeast Arkansas Region.

Prior to his appointment at UAPB, he was the assistant director of Athletics at his alma mater North Carolina Central University (NCCU). He was instrumental in the institution’s transition from Division II to Division I ranks. Perkins’ year-long fundraising campaign yielded $1.8 million to benefit student-athletes.

He also served as the executive director of Communica-tions and External Affairs at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C. He developed and directed communications strategies, which included the development of publica-tions and institutional policies.Perkins holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a pair of Masters degrees in public administration and instructional media from North Carolina Central Univer-sity. He was an Academic All-American in both 1994 and 1995 as a member of the NCCU tennis team, where he was a four-year team captain.

Perkins is a member of the National Association of Col-legiate Directors of Athletics, NCAA Division I Recruiting Cabinet and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet, United States Tennis Association, the National Football Founda-tion and College Hall of Fame, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) enters its 41st year of operation heading into the 2010-11 academic school year. The MEAC is made up of 13 outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Savannah State University and South Carolina State University.

HISTORY...In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committee was formed to fully investigate the idea, present a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct a workshop to outline proposals.

After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its major objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate athletic program among a compact group of educational institutions of high academic standards and with a sound philosophy of co-curricular activities. The conference agreed to seek Division I status for its sports.

The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season of competition in football in 1971.

In 1978, a milestone was reached when the MEAC selected Kenneth A. Free to be its first full-time commissioner. Free served the conference for 18 years before stepping down in May of 1996. In July of 1996, Charles S. Harris was named commissioner and served in the capacity until April 2002. On September 1, 2002,

Dr. Dennis E. Thomas was named the commissioner and has served in the position for nine years.

The conference’s first expansion occurred in October 1979 when Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University were voted into the MEAC as new members. Original members Morgan State, North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore withdrew from the conference at the end of the 1979-80 fiscal year. Maryland Eastern Shore was readmitted in 1981 and Morgan State returned in 1984. Florida A&M opted to resign in 1984 but rejoined the conference in 1986. Coppin State College was granted admittance in 1985, becoming the ninth member institution.

The MEAC expanded again in the 1990’s with the inclusion of Hampton University (1995) and Norfolk State University (1997). The conference expanded in 2007 adding Winston-Salem State University. Following the 2009-10 academic/athletic season Winston-Salem State withdrew from the conference and returned to Division II. On July 1, 2010 the MEAC made its final expansion with the admittance of North Carolina Central and Savannah State University.

On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified as a Division I conference by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Prior to that year the conference operated as a Division II conference. The following month the MEAC received an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

Currently, the conference has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981), women’s basketball (since 1982), football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women’s tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994).

The MEAC initiated cross country in 1980 and North Carolina A&T earned the inaugural men’s crown. The first women’s cross country championship took place a year later with Howard winning the first of its seven titles. Indoor Track and Field was also added in 1981 with South Carolina State capturing the men’s title and Howard winning the women’s crown.

Tennis and golf returned as MEAC governed sports in 1981, after a five-year hiatus. South Carolina State won all seven of the conference’s golf championships from 1972-1983 before the sport was discontinued after the 1983 championship.

Morgan State dominated the conference in wrestling winning 13 of 24 conference championships during the sports tenure (1972-1995).

Baseball, which began in 1972, was discontinued following the 1977 season. It was brought back as a MEAC governed sport along with women’s volleyball in 1983. Women’s softball became a MEAC sanctioned sport in 1992.

Bowling was officially sanctioned as a MEAC sport in 1999. Before that season, the MEAC was the first conference to secure NCAA sanctioning for women’s bowling by adopting the club sport prior to the 1996-97 school year.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced the addition of North Carolina Central University to the conference as its 13th member, as voted on by the conference’s Council of Chief Executive Officers (CCEOs), effective July 1, 2010.

“I am elated to have such an outstanding academic institution as North Carolina Central to return to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. “I would like to commend Chancellor Nelms, Dr. Wicker-McCree, and the entire NCCU family for all their continued hard work as they make the transition from Division II to Division I.”

Commissioner Thomas added, “The addition of NCCU keeps us in compliance with our long range strategic plan of adding up to 14 members. NCCU is a perfect fit for the MEAC.” NCCU is in the third year of its reclassification from NCAA Division II to Division I.

NCCU is one of seven founding member institutions of

the MEAC. The Eagles withdrew from the conference in 1979, opting to remain a Division II member when the conference reclassified to Division I. From 1979-2007, NCCU competed in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

“This is a significant milestone in North Carolina Central University’s transition to Division I,” said NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms. “Membership in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is a win-win proposition for our student-athletes, alumni and fans -- indeed, all our university constituents.”

“This is wonderful news for North Carolina Central University, but most importantly for our student-athletes, coaches and fans,” said NCCU Director of Athletics, Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree. “The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is a fantastic conference with highly competitive academic and athletic institutions. For NCCU to return to the MEAC and be part of its rich history is a tremendous step for our athletics program. We now have a place to call home.”

MEDIA CREDENTIALSHU’s Assistant Sports Information Director, Ariel V. Germain, will handle working press and photographer credentials for all Lady Bison home games. Please make your requests for media credentials in writing at least one day in advance by mail, fax or e-mail. Passes can be picked up at the front entrance before the game or in the Sports Information Office, which is located in room 100 of Drew Hall.

MEDIA PARKINGThere is no reserved press parking. Parking spaces around the gym are reserved for faculty and staff. Parking passes are limited, so parking pass request should be submitted along with media credential request.

INTERVIEW POLICYInterviews involving coaches, staff and student-athletes must be arranged through the Sports Information Office. The Sports Information Office will arrange interviews with all student-athletes in accordance with the best time available for the reporter and the student-athlete. Please contact Assistant Sports Information Director Ariel V. Germain at least one day in advance to schedule an interview.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWSHoward’s postgame interviews will be in the media room, which is adjacent to the concession stand or on the main floor of the Burr Gymnasium. We ask that you supply HU Assistant Sports Information Director Ariel V. Germain with the names of the student-athletes you wish to interview immediately following

the game. We will try our best to accommodate you.

PHOTOGRAPHY AREASNo photographers are allowed inside the locker room or in huddles without prior arrangement. Photographers are reminded to be courteous of the fans in the areas surrounding the floor, and to not obstruct fans’ view of the match in play. All photographers must have prior permission to shoot the game. Permission must be granted from the Sports Information Office prior to the day of the event.

MEDIA SERVICESHU’s press row is located along both sides of the court. Seating is limited. We will try our best to accommodate everyone. The press row is equipped with power outlets, if needed. There are phone lines available if needed, but you must let the Sports Information Office know ahead of time. It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Wireless Internet is also available. A phone line is available for both home and visiting radios in the balcony area above the general seating area. Statistics, notes, programs and media guides will be provided before each game. A complete box score will be distributed shortly after the contest.

VISITING RADIOVisiting radio personnel desiring to broadcast athletic events from McDougald-McLendon Gym should contact the Sports Information Office at the earliest possible date to request permission and obtain credentials.
