BELIEFS
In order for a student to reach their fullest potential, there needs to be a
partnership between students, parents, school, and community.
We believe that teachers and staff should inspire students daily to embrace the
love of learning, as they progress through their educational experience.
All children are teachable and a deserve a consistent, structured safe learning
environment where academic risk taking is encouraged and acceptable.
To prepare students to become successful members of the community, and
independent thinkers, students must experience a variety/diverse of learning
styles, experiences, and people.
We believe each individual child has the potential to learn, when given the
proper tools to succeed and the patience to help them grow.

SCHOOL PROFILE
This narrative should include a description of student and staff demographics, recent achievement, and staff qualifications.
Currently, there are 866 students enrolled. The current school student population is 53 percent African American, 20 percent White, 15 percent Asian, 6 percent American Indian, 5 percent Multi Racial and 1 percent Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. 8 percent of our students are Limited English Proficient. 6 percent of our students receive Exceptional Children’s services.. The most recent information about economically disadvantaged children is from the 2010-2011 school year. At that time, 47 percent of our students received free or reduced price lunch. Our K-3 classes average 19 students per class. Our 4-5 classes average 24 students per class. At Mallard Creek Elementary, in order to address our students’ needs and promote higher academic achievement, we have six core school improvement committees: math, reading, writing, science, social studies, and safe and orderly schools. Each committee includes a teacher from each grade level. The committees review data from the past and present and develop action items to drive our school improvement plan and our instruction. At least monthly, committees meet to assess our progress toward our goals. We made Adequate Yearly Progress, the standard set for schools by the No Child Left Behind Act by meeting 21 out of 21 targets. Each of our sub groups made growth. Well done to all of our School Improvement Committees, our School Leadership Team, and our students and parents. For the 2012-2013 school year, we will continue to ask the following questions in our curriculum grade level meetings: What do we want students to learn? How will we know they have learned it? What do we do with the students who have

not learned it? What do we do with the students who have mastered it? We will continue to use data to develop targeted or differentiated instruction for students at all levels of mastery. We are continuing to implement RtI (Response to Instruction) which is designed to give students the opportunity to have specific instruction based on their individual needs. Another common term for the concept is Response to Intervention. Based on common assessment data, each grade level will divide students up for 45 minutes of reading instruction to address their specific needs. In some cases, that means TD students have the opportunity to experience activities/lessons with other teachers as needed. Students with greater needs will have an opportunity to work in smaller groups during this time. Support staff, including specials teachers and teacher assistants are assigned to grade levels during this time as well to make the groups smaller. The teachers are assigned to groups of children during this time based on their successful ability to reach students on a particular skill. Groups are fluid and will not remain the same for an extended period of time. As a partial Learning Immersion and Talent Development magnet school, we serve students from the Mallard Creek neighborhoods and students who participated in the CMS Magnet Lottery and live in the Violet & Mallard Creek HS attendance areas. Students in the LI program were chose through a random lottery process. Students entering in grades 3-5 must be identified as academically/intellectually gifted through the district guidelines. A continuation Learning Immersion program is open to current second grade students who were not eligible for the gifted program during the district identification process. Our programs accelerate student learning through a rigorous and enriched academic curriculum focused on the strengths of each child. Special features of the K-2 Learning Immersion Program include:
Accelerated and Integrated Curriculum
Develops critical and creative thinking skills
Uses Paideia Seminar instruction
Choices for learning based on multiple intelligences, learning styles, and interest
Special Features of the 3-5 Talent Development Program include:
Full day TD program for certified TD students
