How was the assessment accomplished?

• Student work assessed: What assignments in what courses-- tests, products of student work, etc.?

• ART 402 BFA Thesis Exhibition Review. – Thesis Review: Evaluate students ability to give oral

discussion about their work and exhibition, technical mastery of media, evaluate students competence in presentation of work, evaluate ability to develop cohesive, focused body of work.

Definitions of Criteria:1. Body of Work: Evaluation of technical skills and craft, formal elements, conceptual issues in

relation to form and technique, continuity within the body of work.

2. Installation Practices: Selection/Installation of works presented including: layout and design, lighting, labeling, postcard/promotion, preparation of space/attention to details.

3. Artist's Statement: Clarity and conciseness, relevant research, influences/inspirations, addressing contemporary issues.

4. Oral Defense: Development of outline/talking points, preparation and clarity of delivery,

effectiveness of answering questions. A = 3.41–4.0B = 2.81–3.4C = 2.21–2.8D = 1.61–2.2F = 1.0–1.6

• Sample size: 6 students (Is this a sample or all eligible students?) This was all eligible students for Spring Semester 2013, minus 1 student (closing the loop form was due before receiving data).

Assessment results: What have the data told us?• Percent exceeding: 66.666• Percent meeting: 33.333• Percent approaching: 0• Percent not meeting: 0 • Benchmarks: For BFA, 75% of students earn B or higher • Scoring: Exceed: A Meet: B Approach: C Does not Meet: D and F • Did you meet your benchmark?

Yes

Data-driven decisions: How the department has or plans to “close the loop” based on these results.

1. Body of Work: As a result of our assessment findings, we plan to continue the excellent instruction we have provided for our BFA students.

2. Installation Practices: As part of the process, we noticed that installation/preparation practices (rubric

question #2) of students could be improved by providing them with a dedicated clean preparation space and dedicated woodshop that would allow them to work on matting/framing, construct frames and other gallery structures, work on signage and other things. A budget request to develop such spaces is in order and shall be explored.

3. Artist Statements: While assessment results signify that BFA students overall exceed the benchmark, faculty

noticed there is room for improvement by students. Actions to be taken would include continuing to encourage students to research a variety of professional artists' statements and continue to require them to submit rough drafts to their faculty mentor for review prior to presentation in their exhibition.

4. Oral Defense: The faculty have determined that BFA students generally do a very good job in verbally

discussing their artwork as undergraduates. We will continue to encourage them to speak thoughtfully and with clarity about their research.

What resources were used or have been requested to close the loop?

Of our findings, only one requires the need for resources: Installation Practices.

• The Art Department is hoping to be considered for extra space in Tower once the new Liberal Arts Building is opened.

• Budget for a Preparation space and Woodshop will need to be explored through equipment replacement funding, as department operating budgets have been cut and already stretched to their limits.
