A Trip Around the World -‐ Survey of Foreign Languages & Cultures -‐ (6th-‐8th) Instructor: Marji McIlvaine Material fee: $30 How do you decide which foreign language to study? What if you start with Spanish, but don't really like it -‐ and find you like German better? You have already invested in the first choice, and it's hard to make a change. This class can help! Your student will experience a taste of six languages and cultures, and touch on the geography to go with them. We will cover Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic. Your student will learn the same Scripture in each language, the chorus to "Jesus Loves Me", how to count (at least from one to ten), the basic colors, as well as elements of the culture and the countries who speak that language. We'll discuss and research the spiritual climates in each culture as well -‐-‐ what is the predominant faith? What is evangelism like for missionaries to this culture? And we can't leave out the best part -‐-‐ we'll explore foods, recipes, and other ways to engage with the languages & cultures we study, including reading one book (either missionary biography or novel) related to each culture. With this kind of overview, your student has experience and knowledge on which to base his high school language choice. Foreign language and culture study are part of developing your student's heart for missions as he sees the value and dignity of each culture God has created, as well as helping grow a desire to communicate the amazing truth of the Gospel to all nations.

Journalism (7th-‐12th) Instructor: Sharon Williams Material fee: $15
This class is designed to foster a love of writing in students that have mastered basic skills, but still find writing tedious. Students will be encouraged to write about things they know and love. I will teach on the basic fundamental rights of freedom of the press and freedom of speech and teach them to speak their minds in a logical and coherent manner. They will be submitting comments to local newspapers, writing editorials, submitting articles to magazines and publishers. My goal is to see them get their writings published in a public forum and to enjoy writing more. Impromptu writing assignments in class will develop essay-‐writing skills and we will also blog on various subjects to encourage the students to help each other in their writing. In addition, the class will be creating their own school newspaper, and working on the BBC Home School yearbook as well. This class would fulfill the writing portion of a high school English class. School Newspaper and Yearbook experience can add a nice addition to the homeschooled high school student’s transcript and college applications.
Prerequisites: Student must be writing at grade level. The class is designed to develop creative writing skills and foster a love for writing.
Required text: Small dictionary and thesaurus Individual Supplies: Three ring binder, notebook paper, pens, pencils, highlighters and red pen
for editing. A min. 2gb flash drive for bringing papers to class for newspaper production. A laptop computer, while not needed at every class and not required is suggested for writing and editing papers in class and is necessary for them to work on the yearbook in class.

Biology I (9th-‐12th) Instructor: Jessica Varney Material fee: $50
This is a detailed survey of life on earth, from the bacteria through protozoan and fungi, to animals and plants, as well as cell biology, biochemistry, DNA, genetics, evolution and ecology. The animal survey includes invertebrates, insects, fish, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals. It is very important to note that this class is designed to be a supplement to your home school curriculum and not a substitute for it. Class time will consist of some discussions of the more important points in the textbook but will not touch every issue and concept. Rather, class will primarily focus on important and difficult concepts, unifying themes, and critical thinking. Concepts and material will be demonstrated through hands-‐on lab work, video demonstrations, microscope use, and many dissections as well as a few experiments that are designed to be done at home. This is a good, solid college-‐preparatory course in biology, and also serves as a course in organization and study skills. The student (under their home teacher) are responsible for reading the chapter and understanding the content, doing home labs, writing up labs done in class, doing practice question sets, and staying on schedule. All tests are closed book and are to be given and graded by the home instructor. BBC Homeschool provides all needed microscopes and dissection material. The material fee includes all slides and specimens used in the in-‐class labs. The course and textbook reflect a Christian worldview of God as the Author of creation.

10:10-‐11:40 Windows to the World: World History through Literature & Missions (6th-‐8th) Instructor: Marji McIlvaine Material fee: $30
For this course we travel around the world and through different time periods with world literature -‐-‐ missionary biographies of different regions, and then fiction and/or non-‐fiction books set in those regions. Oh, the literature is outstanding! We address basic elements of literature as they read the novels (plot, point of view, literary terms, etc.), the students write different kinds of short essays, explore the culture and the spiritual climates (including the 10/40 Window), and they keep a timeline and a book of maps (marking major features on each country's map and a world map). The literature comes from all time periods (thus the timeline). We learn a lot about missionaries' lives (in history and a few current), the need of the culture for Truth, how the culture's view of God affects what happens in the country and in its people's lives, and how God is at work through time and place. There is no text; we use “living books” to learn through this course, plus weekly assignments including writing and hands-‐on exploration.
Parents may purchase the books or check them out of the library -‐-‐ a list will be made available to those registered for the class. General world regions we plan to cover: India, Burma, Africa, Mideast, Europe, Russia, South America, China, Korea, Southern Pacific Islands
What it is not: It is not a typical curriculum-‐based, chronological move through world history. We step out of that box and move through different time periods, always with a view to the present country or region. The assignments include a lot of reading, so the student and parent must commit to reading the books (usually very interesting). If a student has reading issues, it is fine if the parent reads them aloud to the student -‐-‐ but there must be a commitment to do the reading. Other assignments are hands-‐on and designed to engage the student in the region's culture, history and spiritual realities. We will include videos, music, foods, and customs. Students will be asked occasionally to prepare a food, and bring it to class, and/or serve their families.

11:45-‐1:15 Middle School Dance (6th-‐8th) Instructor: Sarah Devore Material fee: $25
This year we I will be teaching the basics of Jazz and combining it with Musical Theatre type dancing, as seen in Carolina Mountain Christmas Spectacular for the past 4 years. They will learn the basics, recognize formal names for jazz steps and be able to show them to you upon request! Other forms of dance like lyrical, soft ballet, and hip hop may also appear in some of the fun routines I have planned and I know the kids will be excited to perform for you. The class will also consist of learning to properly stretch and warm up our muscles, and other warm up activities and “down the floor” routines. At the end of the first semester I plan on having a mini show just to show you parents how far they have come, nothing too formal. In the spring toward the end of the school year we will have a wonderful show for you that will hopefully show a little bit of everything they have accomplished, it will also give them the experience and confidence to perform and make you proud! I can’t wait to meet your children and see what special talent God has given them to bring to class.
Individual Supplies:
I would like for the kids to have shoes that do not have chunky soles that allow their feet to move and not get hung up on the carpet, examples would be, Keds, Converse, something of this nature with flat smooth bottoms, not Sketchers or sandals etc… I would also prefer them wear clothes they can freely move in, not jeans.
Notes: Materials fee covers music, a few copies, and their “performance clothes” for their spring show.

Speech and Debate (9th-‐12th) Instructor: Marji McIlvaine/Shelley Robinson Material fee: $25*
Speech, Public Speaking & A Touch of Debate This class will teach and equip your student for competitive team policy debate and competitive speech. Not only does this teach superior, high-‐level thinking skills that translate into every academic discipline, it teaches your student to present his or her position thoughtfully and with respect for the other person.
The skills sharpened in debate encompass too many to list in a short description, but it goes from research into current events, to writing, using logic, outlining skills, critical thinking, to speaking clearly, quickly and respectfully.
The discipline of competitive speech also equips the student to analyze issues Biblically, write speeches (using techniques common to all good writing), and to present speeches using all skills necessary to good public speaking in three areas: "platform speeches" (which the student writes him or herself), "Interpretive speeches", in which the student brings classic literature to life in a speech, and "limited preparation" speeches, in which the student prepares a speech in response to a quote or a question with only a few minutes to prepare. The "limited preparation" speech is also called impromptu, and includes impromptu apologetics in which the student answers questions about Biblical issues. Students ages 5-‐18 can compete in speech.
Team Policy Debate is a form of speech competition. Teams of two people debate current, yet traditional issues. For example, the 2011-‐2012 debate issue was whether or not the United States government should change its methods for revenue generation. Students will argue for change in policy or argue for keeping things as they are, the status quo. At competitions, students will be judged on their resourcefulness, use of research, ability to persuade the judges, and skill in discrediting the opposing team's arguments. Preparation and research for the topic will begin in September, with tournament season running January until May.

1:30-‐3:00 High School Dance (9th-‐12th) Instructor: Sarah Devore Material fee: $25

Mary Rushing Wife to Stan Rushing for the past 25 years and home schooling mom of 3 wonderful children. Leesha, 18 (graduating in 2012 after a lifetime of homeschooling as she would put it), Will, 15 and a freshman this year and Summer, 13 and in Jr. High. I am a born again believer who loves to teach from that perspective no matter what I am teaching. Of course the arts and sciences are my favorite subjects, which I have been teaching for the BBC enrichment classes for the past 4 years consecutively. I have been involved in this home school ministry here at BBC for the past 10 yrs in some way, whether involvement on the board, teaching, or having my kids enrolled in the classes. I love being able to share what God has blessed me with, with these students and I look forward to it again this coming year. Stephanie Smith My name is Stephanie Smith and I have been teaching children in church, school, and home for twenty-‐two years! My husband Travis and I have three kids. Austin (age 19) is a college sophomore at Lee University. Alexis (age 14) is a homeschooled ninth grader. Alyssa (age 6) is a homeschooled first grader. I received my Elementary Degree (K-‐6) in 1989 from Mars Hill College. Then I received my Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction in 1995 from Western Carolina University. I have had the pleasure to teach in public, private, and homeschool settings. Currently, I teach my two daughters and have a variety of other students come to my home for instruction. "Learning is a journey, not a destination" is a dear creed of mine. I love to teach, but I also love to learn! Igniting a student's interest in God, their world, their relationships, and their knowledge, is a goal I hope to attain. I am a passionate Christian! Teaching is an opportunity to show students that they are special, uniquely gifted, and able to fulfill their God-‐given purpose in life!
Jessica Varney After receiving my certification to teach high school earth science, I joined the education team at the Colburn Earth Science Museum where I served as the lead educator for 6 years. My last day with the Colburn was the day I went into labor with my firstborn, who I have chosen to stay home with:) I am thrilled to announce that I recently completed my NC Environmental Educator certification! Everything I do, I do with a spirit of fun and excellence, and that especially applies to how I approach teaching. Plus, the more hands-‐on the better! My favorite earth science subjects are geology, astronomy, and meteorology.
Gregg Williams I've had the pleasure of teaching at BBC Homeschool for two years! In those two years, I've taught fine art and drama. I am a self taught artist, concentrating on oil realism and naturalism and the other area I love in the arts are the performing arts in which I have experience in scene direction of our own Carolina Mountain Christmas Spectacular, plus many years of acting in church oriented dramas such as 'Judgment House' and 'Heaven's Gates, Hell's Flames'
Sharon Williams is a BBC Homeschool team member and has been a member of BBC for 4 years.
