Introduction to SMCCU

The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) is a non-profit organization established to increase awareness and understanding between the cultures that live in Dubai. Established under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum in 1998, the centre operates under the banner of “Open Doors, Open Minds.” whilst striving to remove the barriers between people of different nationalities and raise awareness of the local culture, customs and religion of the United Arab Emirates.

“Whether people live, work or visit the UAE, often times there are perceptions or misconceptions about the Emiratis and Arabs in general. As Dubai in particular has been called a model modern city for the rest of the Arab world, we at the SMCCU feel an obligation to forward the call to all people for peaceful co-existence through true tolerance, acceptance and understanding of those who may seem different than us. Most visitors leave with having gained a deeper knowledge of the Emirati people and their various cultural norms but more importantly they leave with an understanding that it’s the UAE’s vision to create a place where everyone feels welcome, and that in the end human beings are more alike in spirit than our cultural differences seem to project,” says SMCCU’s Managing Director Mr. Nasif Kayed. The programmes offered by SMCCU can help explain the customs, culture, religion and etiquette within the context of Emirati culture. Our sole aim is to welcome non-Emiratis into UAE culture and give them a chance to truly integrate within Emirati society. It is the goal of SMCCU to be the initial step for all people entering the UAE, and the SMCCU will undoubtedly enhance one’s working and living experience here.

During July-Aug 2012, the SMCCU invited guests to join a traditional “breaking-of-the-fast” meal at our wind tower house in the historic district. This month long event strives to give visitors and expat a glimpse of the religious tradition of fasting and prayer. Following the meal, guests are guided on a casual walk around the beautiful Al Fahidi Historic District which is an amazing site at night. The SMCCU was keen to step up its Educational Schools & Universities Programmes in 2012 by inviting more participation from schools around the globe. Our goal is to educate students at every school level, through our well established programmes that complement the UAE curriculum as well as giving visiting schools and universities a firsthand experience of the UAE’s humble but significant beginnings, history of the Arab World and its traditions, and a peak at the practicing of the faith Islam. Participating schools and universities are welcomed to a special programme held in the Al Fahidi Historic District tailored to the educational level of the students. The programme consists of Cultural Walks, Cultural Meals as well as Cultural Awareness presentations at their school, and participation by our volunteers in youth forums throughout the year. In addition, the Masjid Visit Programme provides schools with a full range of activities to help students integrate and understand the Emirati way of life and faith practices.

As part of SMCCU’s educational programmes we provide our guests in the UAE and visitors the opportunity to learn Spoken Gulf Arabic with one of our qualified instructors. We generally keep to small class sizes which are available on week days or weekends in which our students learn traditional Khaliji Arabic, the dialect spoken in the GCC states in the Arabian Gulf.

In addition we have expanded our Arabic programme, offering both Classical Arabic classes and private classes for institutions wishing to train their staff in Arabic language skills both in and outside of the workplace.
