Message from the President:
A record 198 dogs rescued, 32 dogs
in loving sanctuary homes, new teams of
volunteers pulling dogs at even more shelters
and all our bills paid off by end of the year.
This has been a truly great year and none of
it would have been possible without you and
your support. Many of the dogs we rescued
from hopeless situations and gave them not
just hope but medical attention, loving
families and a promise that we will always be
there if they need us.
BJ was pulled from the Harbor
shelter in San Pedro. At 1 ½ years old he was
already completely blind from cataracts. We
asked you to help us give him his sight back
and you answered without hesitation. One
surgery and six weeks recovery later he was
running on the beach with his new mom and
dad, chasing the seagulls.
Dresden was found wandering the
streets in Alta Loma as a stray. No one came
forward to claim him but his foster mom thought he was perfect so she adopted him. Now he is
repaying her by training to become her service dog. We are very proud of Dresden and the
work he does. He is a shining example of what rescue dogs are capable of.
Old and sick Caleb could not even lift his head when our volunteer saw him in the kennel
at the Fresno shelter. With food, medical care and tons of love we got Caleb back on his feet and
adopted him to an amazing family who understands that old dogs still have a lot to offer.
Reef was just one more stray dog among hundreds in the Camarillo shelter when we
grabbed him. Now he is a very important part of a wonderful family. He goes surfing, hiking, and
takes care of the boys. Their lives would not be the same without him.
Looking forward to this coming year, at SCCR we are looking for new ways to rescue
more dogs than ever. Whether you are a once a year donor, Face Book fan, foster mom or
monthly donor you are what makes the work we do possible. We thank you for being an
important part of the Second Chance rescue team and helping us save lives, one Cocker Spaniel at
a time.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Mazzetti, President

Mission Statement:
To find loving homes for cocker spaniels in need. We are an all-volunteer, foster-based cocker
spaniel rescue group. Our representatives are based in Santa Barbara and Sacramento and cover
the state of CA. We provide medical care, spay/neuter, micro chips and vaccinations for our
foster dogs. We will help you select the right for your family and lifestyle.
Brief History of the Organization
SCCR was founded on July 23rd
, 2003
by Elizabeth Mazzetti and Melody
Acres as a cocker spaniel breed
rescue. We rescued and found homes
for 50 dogs our first year. In 2007
Joann Reagan from Sacramento joined
the organization allowing us to expand
to northern CA. In 2009 Carolyn
Graham from Romoland joined SCCR
expanding us into Southern CA. We
do not have a facility. All our animals
are housed in foster homes. We pull
animals from Sacramento, Kern
County and other central valley
shelters; also San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and other central and southern county
shelters as well as south and east San Francisco Bay, and LA County shelters when possible. We
also take in owner relinquishments if we have room but we prioritize animals at risk first.
Board of Directors
Our board of directors is comprised solely of volunteers. We have no paid positions.
Elizabeth Mazzetti: Ms Mazzetti is a SCCR founder and has served as president of SCCR since
inception. She is the cocker representative for Southern California. Active in the rescue world,

Computer Sciences and is a retired software engineer and project manager for high tech

Volunteers
We have no paid staff. Our volunteers do all the work
and they are amazing. They perform administrative
and technical duties. They retrieve cockers from
shelters, transport them, aid in their evaluation and
medical care, provide temporary homes for them,
introduce them to potential adopters at mobile events,
conduct home safety checks, and follow up post
adoption to ensure all issues are addressed. All our
special events are planned and executed by this group
of dedicated volunteers. They are committed to our
mission of saving cocker spaniels and our success is based on their efforts.

Adoptions and Sanctuary Placements
At any one time we have approximately 20-30 adoptable cockers and at least 25 sanctuary
cockers in our foster homes. 2012 continued the unfortunate trend of increased numbers of dogs
in shelters needing rescue. We were able to increase our adoption rate this year by increasing our
mobile events in various venues and by using Adopt-a-Pet as well as Petfinder to market our
available dogs. Facebook and our blog were used to spotlight particularly critical cases.

Programs
Adoptions: We mainly pull cockers from the Sacramento, Kern County and other central valley
shelters; also San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and the Ventura county shelter in central California
as well as shelters in the San Francisco Bay Area and LA county. We will take dogs from other
shelters if we have the space. We will also take in owner surrenders if we have open foster homes
but dogs at risk take priority. All dogs are temperament tested, given a vet check, micro-chipped,
vaccinated, spay/neutered and given any medical care or behavior training needed before the dogs
are adopted. This typically runs to the hundreds or thousands of dollars per dog. Adopters fill out
an application, have a phone interview, home visit and pay an adoption fee.
Sanctuary Program: If we get dog who is 12 years or over or has a severe and chronic medical
problem that will make him difficult to adopt out then we will put the dog into our sanctuary
program where they will live out their lives in a permanent foster home where we pay for all
medical care.
Cocker Placement Service: We offer a placement service for people who need to find a new
home for their cocker when we don’t have an open foster. We require that the dog is spayed or
neutered, current on his vaccines and has seen a vet in the last 4 months. We will meet and
evaluate the dog. Post his picture on our website, screen the calls and handle the adoption. They
must provide a home for the dog while we are looking for an adopter.

Long Term Goals
Expand our ability to rescue and
rehabilitate cocker spaniels from
California shelters by improving our
outreach to the rescue community and
growing our SCCR teams of supporters
and volunteers.
Support the Cockers Spaniels at high kill
shelters in California by pulling and
adopting as many of them as possible.
Expand and mature our fundraising
strategies to support our rescue goals.
Support our dogs for their lifetime by
being their safety net. If they ever need a
new home regardless of the reason why, we will always be there to take them back.
Add value to our SCCR family members by being a reliable source of information on the
breed.
