Using the most mod-ern technology in histrade, George Geiger
is preserving what, forsome, is many years ofmemories.
The 65-year-old hasspent more than threedecades in the taxidermybusiness and just inFebruary of this year finallyopened a retail shop.
“I started out doing it formyself. I’m an avid out-doors person; a fisherman, hunter,” he said. “I graduat-ed high school, completedtwo tours in Vietnam, wentto college and just keptthinking about doing (taxi-dermy).”
Geiger attended theNorthwestern School ofTaxidermy in Omaha, Neb.and was working in a shopset up in his basement. Hesaid eventually his wife hadasked him to move the shopdue to the number of peoplethat were coming in and out.
George Geiger is pictured with a few of his taxidermy pieces at his business, Taxidermy by George.

continued from Page 1“And here we are,” Geiger
said. “I opened the retail settingand I am continuing to do whatI’ve done my whole life. Whenyou’re doing what you love, youfeel young.”
As part of Taxidermy byGeorge, Geiger has the ability topreserve all fish, game, and evenpets.
“Pet cemeteries are a big busi-ness and some people want to gettheir pets mounted. It’s a verydelicate subject. We speak aboutit and if all are in agreement, wedo it. Think about it… for some, pets are like their kids,” Geigersaid.
Currently in Geiger’s shop is aTexas longhorn steer with hornsmeasuring over six feet and abody weight of 1,900 pounds.
“I also don’t put one customerin front of the other. I take themby number,” Geiger said.
With a turnaround rate of fourto six weeks on most mounts,Geiger’s shop is continually busy.
“Most turnaround rates are ayear and a half to two years,” hesaid. “The way I am able to dothat four- to six-week turnaroundis by using the most modernequipment and latest proceduresin the industry today. I stay up onit.”
Geiger also holds classesthroughout the year to teach oth-ers how to do taxidermy.
He said he tells his students,“Anybody can pull a dead animalskin over a form, now bring itback to life. Quality is the key.Make it look alive.”
Geiger added, “You got toknow the species and the anato-my of the animal.”
Helping to create a real-lifemount, Geiger includes habitatwith the animal.
“I don’t just put mounts on aboard. If you catch a fish, there’sgoing to be a mud bank or if youget a bird, there will be treelimbs. Put something in it tomake it look real,” he said.“There isn’t anything in my shopthat I wouldn’t put in a state com-petition.”
Geiger said he is a federally-licensed taxidermist through theU.S. Department of Fish andWildlife to do migratory work
and he is a member of theNational TaxidermistsAssociation and the OhioTaxidermists Association.
He was also recognized viacertificate by the Ohio House ofRepresentatives.
“State Representative CliffRosenberger and Speaker of theHouse Bill Batchelder bothsigned this thing and stamped itwith the government seal thank-ing me for pursuing the pursuit. Ialmost flipped when I saw it. Iwas in awe that they took thetime to look at this and say thankyou. That meant a lot,” Geigersaid.
Born in Sardinia, Geiger said“I tell my friends ‘I’ve beenaround the world twice and I hadthe chance to retire 20 miles fromwhere I was born.’ Here we areback at home.”
Having attended HillsboroHigh School and fished at RockyFork Lake as a child, Geigerenjoys being a Highland Countyresident with a business that sitsnear the lake on North ShoreDrive.
“The people of HighlandCounty are friendly and welcom-ing. They care about you, theyreally do,” he said.
Geiger gave an example of thefriendliness he has experienced.
“You try to pull out of theHillsboro post office and peoplewill stop and wave you out. They don’t do that in a big city. That’s why I came back here. There’s no place like home,” hesaid.
Taxidermy by George is openMonday through Friday fromnoon to 7 p.m., Saturday fromnoon to 5 p.m. and is closed onSundays. Geiger said the reasonfor the later hours is due to peoplehunting in the morning and takinga lunch break at noon or hunterswho have already gotten game, but who are at work until 5 p.m.
With a large bulletin boardhanging in his work space,Geiger also likes to give otherindividuals and businesses achance to display their flyers orbusiness cards
Anyone interested in taxi-dermy services or classes canreach Taxidermy by George at937-393-3284. The shop is locat-ed at 11083 N. Shore Drive inHillsboro across the street fromBayview Bait and Cottages.
DEAR ABBY: I'm confusedabout the protocol in thanking orrepaying someone after stayingseveral nights at their home. Myfeeling is, if you're staying withpeople, the nicest way to thankthem for their hospitality is to payfor most, if not all, the lunchesand dinners you share with themwhen you dine out. That way, youlessen the monetary burden ofyour visit, and it gives you achance to say "thank you" for theuse of their home.
Some visitors seem to thinkthat when they come to yourhome, you should not only putthem up, but also pay for all theiractivities while you show themyour town. What is correct? Or isit a matter of preference?
-- VISITING FROM PHOENIX
DEAR VISITING: Accordingto Emily Post, when a guest staysovernight, a nice bottle of winewould be a proper gift if youknow your hosts drink and theirpreference. If there are children inthe household, a game they can allenjoy or candy might be nice. Ifyou will be staying longer, shesuggests a picture frame with aphoto taken during your visit sentafterward, a houseplant in a deco-rative pot, hand towels or beachtowels.
And I agree with you thattreating your host(s) to a nice din-ner during your visit would begracious and thoughtful.
DEAR ABBY: One of mybest supervisors is in a same-sexrelationship. She and her partnerare raising three wonderful chil-dren from previous marriages. Ihave introduced them to my hus-band at the office as well as work-related social events. He says he"hates" them because he believestheir relationship broke up theirmarriages and it's wrong to raisetheir children this way.
When he encounters them herefuses to acknowledge them andwill snarl when near them.Neither of them have done any-thing to deserve this treatment, and it makes me embarrassed andashamed of him. I've tried to rea-son with him -- nothing works. Itold him flat out he can have hisopinions, but I expect him to treatthem with respect.
I'm to the point where I haveto attend work-related functions
alone and not allow him to cometo my office. That's one solution, but I'm still upset about his atti-tude in general. Any advice wouldbe greatly appreciated.
-- UPSET IN TEXAS
DEAR UPSET: I suspect thatyour husband's reason for "hating"your supervisor has less to dowith the fact that she and her part-ner ended their marriages, andmore to do with knee-jerk homo-phobia. Children who are raisedin happy homes do better thanthose who are raised in a house-hold filled with unresolved ten-sion. I can't change your hus-band's attitude, and neither canyou. Only he can do that, butenlightenment isn't likely to beachieved until he recognizes aneed for it.
P.S. His manners are atrocious, and you're right to keep him apartfrom your work environment.
DEAR ABBY: Due to ahealth problem that caused someof my hair to break and fall out, Ihave recently begun wearing awig. At a social function a womanwho was not a friend of mineapproached me and asked if I waswearing a hairpiece. How could Irespond to such a rude questionwithout admitting that I am wear-ing a wig?
-- STUMPED IN PENNSYLVA-NIA
DEAR STUMPED: Try this:"I'll forgive you for asking thatquestion if you'll forgive me fornot answering."

Ephemerals? Have you heardsomeone speak about spring ephemer-als and wonder what they were refer-ring to? Welcome to the club!
Ephemerals last for only a shorttime each spring. I used to refer to thewildflowers that appear each spring assimply that – wildflowers. Now I real-ize that I need to be more specific anddescribe these wildflowers as spring-time ephemerals!
We have a favorite trail that wehike close to Cowan Lake each springthat bursts with blooms of my favoritespring wildflowers. My husband hasfinally learned that he needs to slowdown for this hike so that I can enjoythe scenery and take photographs. This year I neglected to refresh mymemory by looking through the pagesof my favorite reference book,“Wildflowers of Ohio,” authored byStan Tekiela. This book is handy tocarry and groups wildflowers by colorand then within each color section, theflowers are arranged by the size of theflower, or flower cluster from small tolarge.
As we headed down the trail, Irealized that my book was at home onthe counter, but at least we had a cam-era! To my surprise, the first wildflow-ers that we spotted were Mayapples! Most of the leaves were up anduncurled, but there were no flowersblooming. Some people use theblooming of Mayapples as an indica-tor of when to start looking for the elu-sive Morel mushroom. As we walkedwe spotted masses of Yellow TroutLilies. The common name “Trout”comes from its mottled leaves, whichresemble the coloring of a BrownTrout. The Yellow Trout Lily repro-duces mostly by underground bulbs. Itmay take up to seven years for a plantto be mature enough to flower.
Further up the trail we discoveredLarge-Flowered Bellwort. This 10- to20-inch single-stemmed plant has oneto three drooping yellow flowers perstem. When the flowers are mature, they look wrinkled and droopy.Tucked under these larger plants wereToadshade Trilliums! The singlemaroon red flower poised directly ontop of the whorl of leaves makes thisan easy trillium to identify. This isonly one of the eight species of trilli-um in Ohio.
Then we came upon a mystery! Icouldn’t decide whether we had dis-covered Dutchman’s Breeches orSquirrel-corn! I’m sure that you are allthinking… “well that isn’t a mystery
… one bloom resembles upside-downpants.” The mystery was … what doesthe Squirrel-corn flower resemble? When I looked both wildflowers up inmy reference book, I was relieved tofind that Squirrel-corn is often con-fused with Dutchman’s Breeches, which grows in a similar habitat andoften side-by-side. The leaves of thetwo plants are nearly identical, butSquirrel-corn’s flowers are heart-shaped.
With the strange heat wave that weexperienced in March, we found thatmost of the Bloodroot flowers werefading. One of the earliest plants, itemerges from nearly frozen soil, flow-ering well before trees leaf out. Itsflowers open on sunny days, closingtightly at night. Leaves unroll in fullsun, curling up around the flower stalkat night and on cloudy days. Theseflowers lack nectar, quickly droppingpetals after pollination, leaving alarge, pointed, pod-like capsule thatsplits to reveal many brown seeds.
As we admired these early springephemerals, I realized that theBuckeye trees close by were bloom-ing! What a strange spring we havehad so far.
The one springtime ephemeral on
my “wish” list that we didn’t see?Jack-in-the-Pulpit. I did get to seethem emerging this week at the gover-nor’s residence, along with Pawpawtrees in full bloom.
Don’t forget that we are startingHelpline Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m.until 1 p.m. on April 10 and April 17.A Master Gardener will be at theBrown County OSUE office to answergardening questions.
You can also submit your Helplinequestions to Master Gardener MikeHannah at [email protected].
Mark your calendars for the tworemaining workshops being presentedat the Fincastle campus of SouthernState College. April 19 the workshopwill be “Herbs” and the May 17 ses-sion will be “Planting in Containers.”All workshops are free to the publicand are held in the library starting at 6p.m.
Have you planted your cabbage, lettuce, Swiss Chard, and other coolweather crops? The rabbits haven’tfigured out a way to get inside the cab-bage patch yet. Keep your fingerscrossed for me!

MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2012
CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Jon Cryer, 47; Martin Lawrence, 47; Ellen Barkin, 58; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, 65.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Take on a new project or responsibil-ity that will help you meet new people or expand the possibility to work alongside someone you respect and feel you can learn from. This is a great time to look into personal or profes-sional partnerships that can alter the way you earn your living in the future. Your numbers are 2, 10, 16, 28, 33, 47, 49.ARIES (March 21-April 19): Secrets will not help you solve personal problems. Be open regarding your feelings and ask questions if you think someone is keeping something from you. Anger isn't the answer, but good communication will restore your faith. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Open up to new experiences. Venture down avenues that offer something unique. Strive to meet people who have something to share with you. Put more emphasis on being a participant. What you do now will help you diversify at a later date. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don't get caught in an emotional trap. You have to get a clear picture of how your personal decisions will influence your professional status or your repu-tation. Problems will spin out of control. Make sure you have a back-up plan. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Free your mind with new infor-mation. Experience events and activities that can expand your interests and give you something to strive for. Don't let too many choices lead to a stalemate. Pick and choose wisely. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Use your head and communicate with the people most likely to help you reach your goals. You will learn quickly if you are put in a situation that challenges you. Don't use long-time respon-sibilities as an excuse not to do something. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You'll be too emotionally con-fused to make a good decision. Back away from anyone putting pressure on you to do something you don't want to do. A personal relationship will undergo a dra-matic change if you don't make the right choice. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Stick close to home and practice your beliefs. Your standing will suffer if you do anything that appears to be underhanded. A stellar reputation must be main-tained, even if it means letting someone down who has asked way too much of you. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Improve your digs. The more you do to make your surround-ings more conducive to your goals, the better. A chance to improve your position is appar-ent if you join forces with some-one who has something to con-tribute to your game plan. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Poor information, anxiety and too much on your mind will lead to disaster in communica-tions or while traveling. Find out firsthand what really hap-pened and you will be able to dismantle someone's attempt to exploit you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't allow anyone to take advantage of you. There will be ulterior motives behind the compliments you receive. Avoid
anyone looking for a cash hand-out or inside information that is not to be divulged. Don't mix business with pleasure. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Keep your thoughts a secret until you know where you stand. Someone will take advantage of you emotionally, leading to ill feelings and arguments. Reasonable, responsible action is your best recourse. Avoid being in a vulnerable position.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don't get all worked up over nothing, especially in any situation that can affect your livelihood. A love relationship must not stifle your productiv-ity. Problems with authority figures and institutions are apparent. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are sensitive, passionate and a problem solver. You strive for perfection.

LIVING IN STRESSFUL TIMESThere is anecdotal evidence fromdentists across the nation thatthey are seeing a notable higherincidence of broken and crackedteeth, which most attribute tonighttime tooth grinding (“brux-ism”). It can argued that tougheconomic times have led manypeople to experience higher stresslevels. The latest research on thesubject shows that people whogrind their teeth at night appear tobemore likely to be suffering formstress. This is a problem becausebruxism can lead to excessivetooth wear, looseness, and sensi-tivity.When dentists find evidenceof these symptoms, theymay rec-ommend that patients wear cus-tom-made mouth guards whenthey sleep. Such relaxation tech-niques as exercise and yoga arealso recommended to reducestress levels.
