Dr. Bernard E. Riedel served with great distinction as our Dean from 1967 until his retirement in December 1984 and also as Coordinator, Health Sciences, from 1977 to 1984. His first degree of BSc in Pharmacy was achieved in 1943 and following completion he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, serving as Navigator-Bombardier with the Coastal Command. On discharge in 1946, he held the rank of Flying Officer.
Dr. Riedel began his academic career soon thereafter, becoming a Lecturer and Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta while simultaneously pursuing a Masters degree (which he completed in 1949). He went on to his doctoral studies at the University of Western Ontario and completed his PhD in 1953. He returned to the University of Alberta to begin his career as an Assistant Professor and over a period of six years was twice promoted to Associate Professor and then to Full Professor. During his tenure as our Dean, Dr. Riedel held numerous other positions including Director (1970-78) and President (1976-77) of the Canadian Foundation for the Advancement of Pharmacy; Trustee of the UBC Health Sciences Centre Hospital; Trustee and President (1984-85) of the Cancer Control Agency of BC, and following his retirement, he served as Executive Member, Board Member, Vice-President (1989) and President (1990-92) for the BC Lung Association; Executive Member for the Canadian Lung Association (1991-92); Trustee and Chairman (1986-89) for the BC Transplant Society; Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, BC Health Research Foundation (1991-95); and Member of the Academy of Science of BC (1994).
For his immense contributions, Dr. Riedel was recognized with several awards and distinctions including a Canadian Forces Decoration (1960); Centennial Medal (1967); Doctor of Science (Honorary), University of Alberta (1990); and the 75th Anniversary Medal from UBC (1990). The most significant recognition accorded to Dr. Riedel was the Order of Canada in 1996.
Dr. Riedel truly lived with remarkable courage, strength and determination and all who knew him felt greatly privileged to have had that honour.
MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Welcome to the 23rd Annual Bernie Riedel Golf Tournament!
Since 1989, this event has brought together our friends and partners in support of an important Initiative - our Faculty Pharmacy Practice Centre. The Pharmacy Practice Centre provides our stu-dents with a learning environment that replicates that of a patient-centred pharmacy.
Our young professionals gain invaluable hands-on experience and skill sets from this environment that are beneficial to their program place-ments, future careers, and most importantly, patients. As both the profession and the business of pharmacy continues to evolve, and more emphasis is placed on providing primary health care, it is crucial that our students receive the highest level of education possible. With your help, we can continue to enhance and offer the experiential learning opportuni-ties of the Pharmacy Practice Centre.
We thank you for recognizing the need to support our young profession-als in their pursuit of ensuring patients receive the best care possible. Our Faculty’s future remains bright and full of promise. You play an integral role in helping us reach our potential and deliver on our responsibility to all.
We hope you enjoy your time on the green and thank you once again for the support you have shown our Faculty. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
Warm regards,
Dr. Robert D. SindelarProfessor and Dean
